don't let a few people's bad times make you switch schools.
also, i have heard of SCAD, amazingly, through a comic.
http://www.drewweing.com/journalcomic/?date=20020305
this is a journal-style comic by a person who went to SCAD. it's kinda cool.
anyways, if the school sounds cool to you, it probably will be. a lot changes in a year, new students, different faces, lots of shifts and changes, as is with any school.
also, good luck! work hard! >3

It really depends on what kind of degree you're looking for. From what I've heard, it's well known for its architecture program. But if you're wanting to go there for something like Animation, it's not the best school. It is pricy, because it's private.. which is why some people find it bad. Classes like math and such are still required there even for a BFA, which some people believe is not worth the tuition. (Don't get me wrong, though. The art program i'm in still requires a scientific practice credit, for some reason.) It's also fairly easy to get a good scholarship from the school there.
Again, I've heard some iffy things as well.. but then, SCAD is nearly my school's rival. So. ;D

Hi!
I currently a SCAD student (just finished my freshman year), and I would like to offer some insider opinion about it:
Okay, first of all, I really think part of SCAD is choosing the right major for it. SCAD has an amazing, and I mean A-MAZ-ING sequential department. They have the best teachers, classes, and I've seen so many talented kids come out of that major. Even if you're interested in something else- like illustration, drawing, painting, I would suggest taking sequential, at least as a minor, from SCAD because there's a lot of career paths to stem from sequential that just isn't comic making (ie: freelance illustrator, storyboard artist, etc.) and you're going to come out of it with a lot of know-how.
SCAD is expensive, BUT, if you work hard and make a good portfolio and good grades before you apply you can get a great scholarship. Even better is if you get a certain score on your SATs or ACTs (I took both) you can get about $20k scholarship to go there, almost the full cost of tuition. I am personally at SCAD with a sweet scholarship thanks to my portfolio and grades smile .
However, I am not a sequential major...and here's where I start to look at the downsides of the school. Granted, I have not got into my major yet (Animation), but I have strong doubts about their animation department from my first year there. It's more geared towards 3-D animation, even if you'd like your emphasis to be 2-D like I do, they make you take 3-D. They've completely taken out the drawing aspect of the animation department and, to be honest, the 10-week quarter system that they have IMHO is an extremely stupid one for an animation program. You need more than 10 weeks to do anything decent!!! I have been talking to a lot of alumni and a lot of animation kids come out of that school and become...web animators. I don't know about you, but I have bigger dreams than making flash cartoons for the rest of my life XD;. And, not to talk down to my peers or the alumni- but not many people in the 2-D animation dept are quite up to par with what I'd like to see myself become.
Also, it kind of sucks they only make you take life drawing for 1 quarter- only 10 weeks. I just think that's stupid for an illustration or animation or sequential major to only have to take a life drawing class for a single quarter XD. Granted, you are free to attend live nude model session every friday at the school on your own, but it becomes difficult sometimes when you are bogged down by other classes.
So, that said, this upcoming year will be my last year at SCAD, because even though I almost have a free ride to this school, it's just not what I want :/.
THAT SAID, I would not even be considering applying to another-certain-school-that-I'm-applying-to-this-year if it weren't for all that I have learned from the foundation classes and professors at SCAD. Kind of confusing, isn't it? It's hard to say- SCAD is an amazing school in some aspects and not-so-much in others. I guess every college is like that.
Also, SCAD definitely has some pretty amazing, motivational professors and you will learn A LOT from this school if you decide to go. There's also a lot of afterschool activities and clubs that will help you become a better artist. It definitely has the best "Afterschool activiities" of any place I've checked out- from yoga classes to anime clubs, there's pretty much a club for anything you could be interested in, and if there's not you can easily start one smile .
As for campus life: The school's campus is not a closed campus. It's set up all across Savannah, which is beautiful in some parts and sketchy in others (just about like any other city, though- the difference being at SCAD you will find yourself in the middle of many of these areas because the campus is spread all across town). SCAD offers a bus system to escort you across the city to your classes but the bus can be unreliable and frustrating at times. The trick is to try your best just to show up early, and not try to catch a bus 15 minutes before your class. But it also becomes annoying in that some classes it can add about a whole hour of wasted time to your day just by waiting for and riding the bus.
students here are pretty chill- they range from otakus to "cool kids", but it's definitely not highschool anymore and you won't feel pressured by being different, if in fact you consider yourself to be now smile . There's sort of a "eh, it's art school" mentality when it comes to people wearing cat ears, having blue mohawks and piercings, or walking around in a Robin outfit when it's not halloween. Most everyone seems to get along alright. And, against popular belief, the student body is *NOT* made up of rich white kids. I've seen a great many "lower crust" friends/acquaintances who have come here on scholarships because they are hard-working individuals with a passion for what they do.
if you have any more questions feel free to PM me or ask here smile I'm probably going to join this guild (why I was snooping the forum in the first place)
