Slang//America and the UK

Because alot of you are American, or at least speak America English as your second language, and I'm English, I've compiled this list if slang words I might use that might confuse you...just to make it all clear...

If you can think of any, or want to ask me any, then please do!

Words:
Chips - now you guys call these FRIES...we call them chips...what you call potato chips, we call CRISPS.

University - When you guys finish school, you go to college to get a degree...in England, college is something we go to for 2 years to take subjects of our own choice, AFTER college we go to University, which is the equivalent of your college.

Cinema - You call it the Theatre...it's the place you go to watch movies.

Holiday - you call this a Vacation..when I say I go on holiday, it means I'm going on a vacation, not celebrating Christmas or Easter or something.

Knackered - If I say this it means I'm really tired.

Lift - This is technically the word for Elevator, however it is also slang..if I use it, it means I got a Ride...yer know..someone drove me somewhere in their car..

Mobile Phone - you call it a cell phone.

Pillock, Plonker or Numpty - These 3 words all mean an idiot.

Bollocks - Testicles. We English use this as another way of saying "oh s**t" or "oh crap".

Fanny - Fanny is NOT your butt, as some Americans say...do NOT refer to it in England because it means female genitalia. You have been warned xp

Nowt - This is something only people from Northern England say, so that means me....it means "nothing".

Phrases
Bugger All - This means "nothing"..if you say "so what did you do today?" and I say "bugger all", it means I did nothing..

We don't speak english, we speak american. After we butcherd the language so badly that became american. NOT ENGLISH! American is the in-bred cousin of english.

Being from London, when I moved 'up North' I could barely understand some of the sentences due to the difference in slang. Although now I'm used to it I use it so that people understand me

Wagon - a Lorry or Truck, not something out of cowboy movies

it's Maffin'/Maftin' in here- it's hot in here

They still use queer to mean unusual instead of an insult

Also has anyone else ever heard a woodlouse called a cheeselog?

I've never heard of them being called cheeselogs, but I have heard them called cheesybobs...I'm jus not sure why they're called that sweatdrop

I asked cos my boyfriend calls em that, I think maybe its only in Reading or Berkshire where he comes from. It sounds like a snack you'd put in your lunchbox
