She's eating hopper mice right now - we get them frozen in bulk and thaw them for her. It's kind of cute in a morbid way when you feed her - she's a little picky, so we have to jiggle the mouse by the tail and make it look like it's alive..
Despite what people think, Snakes are executioners not grave diggers - they won't eat carrion. If it's not fresh, it will rot in their stomache in since their metabolism is so slow. They'll barf it up and they won't get enough nutrients. If they dont barf up rotting food, they can get really sick. On the plus side, you only have to worry about feeding every 10 days, and then every 2 weeks when they're adolescent, and every month when they're fully grown.
Careful owners won't get any serious bites. Good breeders will always recommend that 6ft+ snakes be handled by more than one person, no matter how strong you are. Snakes are instinctive. Even if you have lived with it for 20 years, it will still try to eat you if you smell like food (say, if you have handled mice/rabbits without washing your hands), or while they're shedding (their eyes go opaque for up to 14 days), or if you move too fast.
When they're younger they'll get nippy if you try to pick them up headfirst or move too quickly by its head. In the wild, birds and ferrets will bite the head off a snake first. So yeah, reasonable paranoia lol
See? We can learn things on Gaia! Next I'll be drawing a punnett square @_@;;
