Ecclesiastes 9:5-6

Quote:
5 For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and even the memory of them is forgotten.

6 Their love, their hate
and their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
in anything that happens under the sun.

What does this mean?

Our church recently took a couple of Sundays and went over the whole book. It was basically Solomon's journey to find fulfillment in life without God. "Under the sun" means without God; on this earth. It hasn't shown up yet, but "chasing the wind" means it is meaningless.

Anyways, on to the actual verses. This means that without God we will live short, pointless, meaningless lives and will die, not taking part of anything. The whole book is basically Solomon being depressed and going into atheism or something of it's equivelant.

I think the last verse explains it: "anything under the sun."

I think it's just talking about how when you die, nobody remembers you anymore/ you don't experience anything "under the sun," anymore.

Ecclesiastes is an interesting book. I haven't looked into it in a while, but I believe the jist is without God life is useless. Also, it could be a "store your treasures in heaven" type situation.

I'd need to look at it in context buuuut... I'm too lazy right now.

Almost? What if I started talking about Song of Solomon? Would that make you read?

It would make me pick my Book up, but only to hit you with it.

Though the passage is ominous at first glance, reread I think it can be a soothing one. It has a concept of 'Soon I will be done with the troubles of the world.' The dead have the privelege of not bearing the burdens and crosses they carried in life through to the afterlife; They are one with the might of God--they no longer have passions or desires, much like the Buddhist conception of enlightenment or Nirvana--unity and harmony with Brahman, Jesus, Allah, or whatever you choose to call it.
