    "Idiot."

Aventurine's hold tightened and his brow twitched as his practiced expression wavered. If he had to hear that insufferable scholar's voice insult him one more time, he was going to lose it. He knew he was an idiot. He didn't need his mind to supply him with the reminder, much less by using Ratio. It was just adding insult to injury at that point.

He glanced over at the youth sitting next to him. His latest "purchase", though Aventurine loathed the very idea of it. The receipt, stored safely inside his jacket, burned his chest with as much bite and heat as the brand on his neck had. Truth be told, he wanted very much to pull it out and rip it to shreds, but Aventurine wasn't stupid. He knew that would satisfy no one but himself. While he had been more than ready for his freedom since the moment he was branded, Shōichi was very obviously not. Forcing him to accept that he was free would be more damaging than helpful.

There was a reason animals raised in captivity needed to be eased back into their wild habits. People weren't that different.

    "Impulsive. Reckless."

Shut up and get out of my head.

Frustrating as it was, the Ratio in his head was right. It was an impulsive and reckless decision. Truth be told, when his temporary friend on the Mugen Fune had suggested he pay for a night with the star of that night's show, stating he was their star performer for more than just his talent with the stage, Aventurine had every intent to get his money's worth. There had been several performers that were actively and genuinely interested him, so he hadn't picked up on anything being wrong. He assumed Shōichi would be the same.

    But, he wasn't.

What Aventurine found in the room was not a partner for the night eager to make sure his money didn't go to waste. Instead, he found someone that reminded him too much of himself. Insincere smiles and empty words that could fool most others but couldn't fool him. A bird, like him, bound in chains and locked in a pretty cage. It was the first time in a long while that he'd encountered another slave and this time, they hadn't been pitted against each other to fight to the death for the entertainment of their owners. This time, he could do something about it. And, he did. Against his better judgement, he requested a meeting with the theatre directors in order to negotiate a fair price for Shōichi. What he ended up paying was not fair at all; they were very stubborn and reluctant to part ways with their highest earner. But, everything had a price and eventually, Aventurine found theirs.

Now he was flying through the void of space in a gifted vehicle with a passenger he honestly had no idea what to do with. He couldn't just find a half-decent planet, declare him a free man, and ditch him; it would be irresponsible and just cruel. The only course of action Aventurine currently had was birds. Because Shōichi really wanted to see birds. It was his one request when he had broken the silence between them and asked what he wanted to do.

Actually, it was one of two requests, but it was much easier for him to find a planet that had birds than it was to track down an unnamed interstellar traveler with a description that was out of date by twenty years. So, birds it was for now.

"Don't know. I don't know this area. Somewhere with birds, though. That I can promise you."

There were a few different things to take note of when they landed and disembarked. First, the island was close enough to the mainland for Aventurine to have seen the port town, though he was sure Shōichi hadn't noticed at all because his eyes never left the island as they descended. Granted, the only reason Aventurine decided it was worth noting was because there were things they would definitely need. Shōichi needed shoes first and foremost because not every place he went would friendly on bare feet. Maybe some clothes that didn't drag behind him, too, just for convenience

Next was evidence that the island got quite a bit of traffic. There was no reason for there to be such a large and intricate treehouse on the south side of the island if people didn't build it. That meant there was a high chance they'd meet some of the natives. That was good; it meant Aventurine could get his bearings assuming anyone of the planet knew a thing about space travel. And, if they didn't, well....They were still bound to have useful information. There was always something worth having to gain from strangers, especially when occupying visiting a new planet.

The third thing wasn't something he gave too much attention to because it seemed irrelevant, but the way Shōichi's birthmark shimmered like a crystal rainbow was admittedly very beautiful. Very different from how it had been the past few days. What a strange but attractive feature for someone to be born with, especially considering it was entirely unique to Shōichi. None of the other Eien that Aventurine had met had anything like it. Vaguely, he recalled his temporary friend mentioning the birthmark was what made Shōichi so successful.

The exact opposite of Aventurine's own unique feature. People hated his eyes. So, a part of him was...relieved...that Shōichi's had been so valuable. Well, about as relieved as he could be given what that actually meant.

Leaving Shōichi to his awe as he discovered the pleasure of visiting a beach for the first time, Aventurine turned his attention to his phone. He'd been putting it off since he awoke on the Mugen Fune, not sure if he should be contacting anyone. He hadn't made any plans to, but then he went and tapped into his bank account, so it was only a matter of time before someone broke the silence. The IPC would undoubtedly be on his tail soon if they weren't already. He was, after all, a valuable asset and someone they had put a lot of resources into.

Which was just a nice way of saying they'd given their pet more than they thought he deserved and expected him to appreciate it.

Shaking his head, he decided he would try to contact Ratio. Out of everyone, he seemed liked the safest choice. Aventurine was almost positive the Trailblazer would want nothing to do with him after what happened between them on Penacony. Especially if his plan worked and his noble sacrifice had paved the way for the IPC to reclaim Penacony. But, Ratio had been a consistent, if reluctant, ally in his plot and even if he didn't like Aventurine, the scroll he left him had made it very clear he at least didn't want Aventurine to die.

His message, short and to the point as he knew Ratio would probably appreciate, didn't send. His brows furrowed. It couldn't be that after going out of his way to leave him a message explicitly telling him not to die that the scholar had barred his number. The only logical conclusion was that they were outside the IPC's signal range, but even that made no sense because he wouldn't have been able to withdraw funds if they were. Frustrated, he tried again, this time adding a little bit of bite to his message. Not scathing, though Ratio would probably see it that way and come back with scolding him for his poor manners or something while insulting his heritage.

His eyes deliberately stayed glued to his screen when Shōichi turned to him, expressing disappointment that the bird had flown off. Aventurine wanted to see what he was really working with. Gauge how much work he would really need to put in before the other was ready to reclaim what should've been his from the beginning. And, to his surprise but immense pleasure, it didn't seem as if Shōichi was completely broken. It was obvious he'd been seeking or debating asking if he could follow after the seagull, but in the end, he made the choice to simply do it without consulting his "employer". Whatever had compelled him to do so didn't matter; even if he came to the conclusion he didn't need to ask, that itself was proof that he could still think for himself.

Aventurine still followed him, though, making sure to keep a fair distance. He was glad to see Shōichi had a mind of his own, but they were still on an unknown planet with unknown everything. And, he was certain Shōichi had no ability to protect himself from serious danger. So, of course, that left Aventurine with the role of protector. That was also something they would need to work on. Shōichi couldn't go gallivanting across the universe with no means of self-defense.

Aventurine was prepared for the eventuality that they met someone, so when he spotted the young man walking down the shore towards them, he wasn't all that surprised. Unlike Shōichi who, apparently having been so engrossed by the seagulls, had completely missed their new companion's arrival until he spoke. Cute was the only thing that ran through his head when Shōichi took shelter behind him. Mostly because he'd never had anyone think of him as something to feel safe with.

What a strange feeling it left him with.

"Hello! I hope you won't be offended by my companion; he's a bit on the shy side." Aventurine lifted his glasses to sit in his hair. "A pleasure to meet you, friend. The name's Aventurine and this is...Tourmaline. As for your question, there's no need to worry. We're exactly where we want to be."

For now, he wasn't about to start mentioning they came from beyond the sky. He had no idea how advanced these people were after all. Since he wasn't here to occupy their planet, there was no reason for him to blow their minds.

"I sincerely hope we aren't intruding. This wouldn't happen to be private property, would it?"

Wriothesley had to admit that when he received Neuvillette's letter alongside the record of his latest inmate, he expected something similar to what happened with the Harbinger. Someone who didn't take his sentencing sitting down and would do anything to escape. But, it turned out to be a fruitless concern. This Leon fellow was an upstanding inmate. Even though he was treated rather unfairly in both Wriothesley and Neuvillette's point of view, he accepted his sentence with grace. Maybe Neuvillette gave him some parting words the way he'd done for Wriothesley all those years ago that kept him in line or maybe he was genuinely just waiting to be released; he had only a couple more weeks after all. Whatever the case, Wriothesley was pleasantly surprised that he didn't have to worry about thwarting escape plans.

After all, unlike the Harbinger who had been a victim of a false verdict, Leon had committed the crime he was initially charged with. He wouldn't get the same blind eye and leniency Wriothesley had given Tartaglia because he was legitimately guilty, even if it was because he was unaware of the law. So, all he had to do was keep an eye on him and make sure he was safe as Neuvillette privately requested he do. Which he was more than happy to do from afar. Something he'd been doing just fine until Sigewinne got to him and asked he bring their latest inmate in for a check-up.

That was how he found himself strolling through the Production Zone being gawked at by the inmates, occasionally hearing a shy or nervous greeting. It was one of the many reasons he avoided his people; unless they worked closely with him the way Jurieu and Lourvine had, the inmates were easily intimidated by him. Still, it wasn't his place to refuse a personal request from their head nurse, so he just had to deal with it. Thankfully, Leon was working relatively away from everyone else under the rather lenient gaze of one of the guards. Likely caused by having learned he didn't need to hover over the man to make sure he was working. That didn't stop the guard from standing at attention when his superior approached, though, trying to look as if he had been diligent the entire time.

"Prisoner number 8991, greetings. I must say I'm feeling rather honored to finally have the chance to speak with you. It's not often an inmate makes such a good impression on the guards here to the point where they want to be on duty while you work." He sent a pointed look at the guard. Nothing vicious; just enough sternness to tell him he hadn't been fooled by his act and to do better next time. "My apologies for interrupting you during labor hours, but the head nurse tells me you haven't been in to see her at all since arriving. She would like to see you now. Rest assured, it's just a simple check-up and you won't be docked any Credit Coupons for leaving early."

So, they had landed on a place called Destiny Islands. Judging by the name, it didn't seem to be the name of the actual planet and he wasn't about to ask such a strange question. It didn't matter anyway; it wasn't as if he and Shōichi weren't about to explore the planet itself. They were just there to see some birds and hopefully get some things to make interstellar travel more convenient for Shōichi. So, the islands and town were going to be their only real experience with this particular planet.

It didn't seem the island was private or otherwise off limits, though, because their companion - Sora - was unbothered by them being there. He was even generous enough to lend them one of his boats. That certainly solved the potential issue of how they were supposed to get to town and he didn't even have to ask. How lucky were they?

"Well, thank you for the offer, my young friend. We just might take you up on it."

Things happened very quickly after that. There was barely any time to register the yowl before Sora, the poor soul, had something collide with him with enough force to not just knock him off his feet, but trigger a sand cloud around him. Aventurine grabbed Shōichi's arm and moved the both of them back, activating his shield in anticipation of an attack. But, no such thing came. Instead, the sand settled to reveal nothing more than a very large cat sitting on Sora's chest with the boy out cold.

Well, he said "nothing more", but even to Aventurine, that was very strange. Cats falling from the sky was not normal; heck, he would argue it wasn't even rare. Because until now, it had never happened. Not quite knowing what to do and not willing to get himself into a scuffle with a cat that survived their stunt as a meteorite, Aventurine decided he and Shōichi would just continue on their way. Besides, other than being out of it, Sora seemed completely fine.

    "We should go."

He, carefully, led Shōichi away from the scene and towards the direction Sora had come from. He could only assume that was where the boats were. Sure enough, he'd guessed correctly but was a little dismayed to see they were rowboats. Well....Better than nothing, he supposed. Aventurine had certainly dealt with worse.

"Hm? Oh, we're going shopping." He could laugh at Shōichi's confusion. He didn't, of course, because that would be rude. Not to mention discouraging. "We got lucky this time and ended up somewhere warm, but we can't always expect it to be that way. You need shoes and proper clothes if we're going to be traveling and visiting different planets."

Not that there was a lot of room on their tiny ship. Hell, there wasn't even a big enough bed for the both of them and they still needed to address that problem. But, that just meant they had to be frugal and pick just a few effective outfits. Stylish or not, though Aventurine knew he wouldn't be spending a cent on anything that didn't at least look good on Shōichi. He was an Avgin, after all, and they had an aptitude for beauty.

"Come. I'll help you into the boat. Watch your step; we don't want you falling into the water."

It wasn't particularly deep, so he wasn't worried that he would drown, but it wouldn't be convenient for Shōichi's clothes to get wet. They weren't exactly the kind of fabrics that you wanted to walk around in while soaked. Steadying the boat, Aventurine helped Shōichi in and waited for him to be seated before untying the rope. When was the last time he was in a rowboat? Feels like forever ago, which meant it probably was. Hopefully he'd have some muscle memory to fall back on while he got used to it.

"What sort of colors do you like, Shōichi?"

Wait. Seriously? His "employment" was so strict that he didn't even know what his favorite colors were? Aventurine couldn't even fathom how that could happen. But, just because he couldn't understand didn't mean it wasn't true. It posed a bit of a problem because now he had to figure out how to navigate their little spree without seeming as if he was controlling the entire thing. Aventurine would make it work, though.

"Hey, now. Don't apologize; it's fine. We can find what colors you like while we shop. If anything, this just means our spree will be even more memorable."

It felt so strange thinking positively. Aventurine couldn't say he enjoyed it all that much, though he wasn't sure if that was how he actually felt or if it was a product of having lived the way he had for so many years. Whatever the case, he'd just have to get used to it.

"But, if you get overwhelmed and don't want to put in the effort, we can just buy what looks good on you and come back to your preferred colors and style later."

He wondered, briefly, if it would be difficult to find something that fit with Shōichi's unique markings. But, that was swiftly disbanded because even without the knowledge that they were prismatic in nature, the clothes that Shōichi was wearing still suited him. For all their obvious flaws, at least the theater he'd rescued the other from had an eye for fashion. It was certainly more than what he had ever gotten back on Sigonia and the IPC hadn't exactly been that into it either; they just paid for whatever he had wanted back before he'd actually started working for them.

Aventurine suddenly had a thought. If Shōichi didn't know what colors he liked and had always just been told what he looked good in, did that mean he had never chosen his own clothes?

    "...Have you...ever been shopping, Shōichi?"

Well, that answered that. Aventurine could only scowl, disgusted and frustrated by the confession. Disgusted because that was such a dystopian way of doing things. Not allowing their performers the freedom to choose their own clothes or go shopping was so far beyond the pale that you couldn't even see the border anymore. What was the harm in letting them have something that was casual to wear when not working? His frustration actually stemmed from that disgust because he couldn't understand why someone who was, legally, an employee could have even less freedoms than an actual slave.

Granted, Aventurine didn't buy into the difference between "employment" and slavery from the very start. That didn't mean he hadn't at least considered that things for Shōichi might've been a little better than what he'd been subjected to. Which, to be fair, they were in some cases. Shōichi may have had to perform on a stage and entertain guests during the aftershow, one of those being worse than the other based on personal experience alone, but at least he wasn't put in pits to kill his fellows. And, Aventurine could assume he was never tortured either; at least, not to the extreme he had been. Harsh discipline had been what he'd picked up on the Mugen Fune, but that didn't involve the sort of things the Katicans had done to him.

He shook his head, not letting himself fall into that rabbit hole. Not with Shōichi there anyway.

"Origami. Do you make origami figures?" Now that he thought about it, there had been a few origami cranes in Shōichi's room. "Ah. The cranes in your room. You made those? Did you bring any of the paper with you?"

The answer to that was a no, though Shōichi seemed a bit disappointed while answering him. Aventurine would keep his eyes open for a crafts store or something that might sell origami paper then. It wouldn't do to rob the other of the only hobby he seemed to have.

Shoe shopping with Shōichi was a lackluster affair. He hadn't anticipated any trouble, of course; they were just shoes and without an outfit to match them with, the pressure was off. Still, he did his best to offer suggestions that would still look good even if they might ultimately be temporary. But, Shōichi ended up liking a pair of sandals because of the little flower. Granted, they didn't look bad; they just didn't look good either. Not with his kimono. But, well....Again, they were temporary. If he really did like them, Aventurine was sure they could find something that went with them. Beachwear, probably, or maybe a sundress depending on where his interests and tolerances leaned.

Besides, the situation revealed that Shōichi was drawn to either flowers or cute attachments. It was a positive step in discovering his individuality and that was the whole reason he'd refused to leave the Mugen Fune without him, wasn't it?

With his shoe situation briefly taken care off, Aventurine navigated their way to a clothing store with the help of a couple of the locals. This time, though, the shopping was much more daunting. Not just for Shōichi, though it would be more accurate to say he was more than just "a little" nervous, but for Aventurine, too. His tastes were much more elite than the little beachside store had to offer; he hadn't touched anything cheaper than his first suit since he was taken in by the IPC. It was mostly because he swore to himself he'd never let anyone, himself included, put him in rags again but also because he'd been spoiled by the wealth he gained through the IPC. So, he wasn't exactly confident that he'd be able to turn what he essentially viewed as rags into decent outfits.

He would certainly try, though, because again. He wasn't spending a cent on anything that didn't at least look passable. Shōichi didn't have him wrapped that tightly around his pinky just yet.

Thus began the somewhat arduous task of putting together sets without seeming too controlling. Which was incredibly difficult because Shōichi was of very little help. Not through lack of effort, of course; on the contrary, his contributions may not have helped much in the actual outfit planning, but it did help narrow down some thing. Like how he seemed to prefer softer colors and had a stronger interest in loose-fitting clothes than tight ones. That part actually made sense considering the kimonos he owned were all very loose. Eventually, Aventurine was able to put together a total of four different outfits that all followed the same general guidelines. He believed the human members of the IPC that wore similar styles called it "casual". Though, he couldn't recall ever seeing anyone wearing so much pastel-oriented designs.

"Alright. That should do it. Remember: There's no rush, so take your time. And, if you don't like anything, don't be afraid to tell me."

Once he was sure Shōichi was fine to be left alone, Aventurine made his way to the counter.

"Hello, sir! Are you finding everything you need?"

"So far, so good. Could I ask you something unrelated to your store?"

    "Of course."

"Would you happen to know where I might be able to find origami paper?"

"I don't know if they'll have it, but there's a crafts store down the road on the corner that might."

"I see. Thanks for the assistance. Ah....Could I trouble you to do a small favor for me?"

Sir Pouncelot didn't know what was going on. One minute, he was lounging in the Traveler's mansion and the next, he was falling from the sky until he ended up colliding with someone. He wasn't sure if they'd caught him intentionally or not; Sir Pouncelot didn't really have the chance to notice. Regardless, the boy had been knocked out by him and unlike when he used to knock out the knights to get away for some time to himself, this was an accident. So, he felt a little responsible. Which was more than could be said about the two other men that the boy was with. They left pretty quickly.

                                            Rude.

He waited patiently for the boy to wake up, sitting comfortably on his chest because why would he be anywhere else when it was comfortable? Eventually, his unfortunate victim did stir and wake up and was, understandably, very confused. He recovered quickly enough and focused on Sir Pouncelot. When asked about his name, Sir Pouncelot stared at the boy.

"Of course I have a name. It's right here."

He pawed at the crest attached to his bandana as if signaling the best way he could that it was carved into the back of the wooden emblem. It was such an inconvenience to not be able to talk to humans. The Traveler was the only one that seemed to understand his meowing.

Aventurine really should've talked a bit more about Shōichi's origami. He doubted he had used any specific kind of paper that was hard to come across and even if he did, it wasn't something he could do much about. The problem was that he had no idea what colors his young friend would like. The cranes in his room had been white, but Aventurine wasn't sure if that was a personal choice or if that just happened to be the color of paper the theater had bought for him. It quickly became apparent that planning a genuine surprise was much more complicated than he thought it was.

In the end, Aventurine decided to buy a couple packs of multicolored paper and let Shōichi decide for himself. It was the safest bet given the circumstances.

    "Is that everything?"

"It is. Thank you and have a wonderful day."

    "You, too!"

Aventurine quickly left the store to hurry back to where he'd left Shōichi. If he was gone any longer, the other was bound to notice. Or, if he already had, it would surely start to affect him. Though, it seemed as if even the short time he was gone was still too long because he had just turned the corner and bumped into a somewhat frantic Eien. Worried, Aventurine was quick to steer them somewhere less out of sight.

"Shōichi, what's wrong? Did something happen? You weren't harassed, were you?"

Shōichi didn't get much of a chance to say anything before a chill ran down Aventurine's spine as something appeared behind Shōichi. Aventurine quickly pulled the other behind him, taking the hit meant for him. It didn't much at all to him; the creature's strike hadn't hurt at all really. Even if he wasn't shielded, he doubted it would've done much. Still, that didn't mean there was no threat. After refreshing his shield, Aventurine took Shōichi's hand and led him through town. If there was going to be a fight, it was best that they weren't in town at all.

    "Stay close to me, alright?"

He almost chortled at Leon's distaste for his presence. It was certainly nothing new to him; nowadays, he found it funny how quickly people distrusted him based solely on his position. But, they were quick to drop their misconceptions about him after a while, so he wasn't too worried. Just another day in Wriothesley's book.

"You would be correct. The people down here address me as Your Grace, but you're free to just call me Wriothesley. Frankly, if everyone would start using my name, people probably wouldn't get so freaked out whenever they see me. The formalities make me seem much less approachable than I actually am." Well. The people who had no reason to be scared of him anyway. He quite liked seeing Dougier cower away from him whenever they crossed paths; sometimes, he went out of his way just to make the man's day a little darker. "Yes, you should have. The last thing you want to do around here is get Sigewinne to pay you a personal visit because you neglected your health. You'll wind up on bedrest for an undefined amount of time and trust me when I say you will be traumatized by whatever strange meal she deems appropriate for your care."

"Says the one that works himself to exhaustion before he'll bother coming to see me. You haven't changed at all in fourteen years."

That was a blatant lie. Of course he changed. He was no longer an inmate that intentionally got himself sent to the infirmary as it was the safest place to be; he worked as hard as he did nowadays out of sheer devotion to his people. But, of course, neither of them were about to say anything like that in front of anyone that didn't need to know.

"Ah, Head Nurse....Someone must be getting impatient in her old age. I was just about to escort your latest trouble case to you. There was no need for you to follow. Well, since you're here, allow me to introduce you. This is--"

"Prisoner number 8991, Leon Scott Kennedy. Twenty-seven years old. Born male and identifies as such. Blood type A. Just from looking at you, I see nothing of immediate concern, but....Were you recently infected with something, Monsieur Kennedy? It seems completely handled now, but I can't help but notice minute signs of recent disfigurement."

Wriothesley blinked and looked at Leon. Disfigurement? He looked perfectly normal to Wriothesley. But, he also wasn't a Melusine, so he couldn't claim to have the ability to discredit her words. If anyone was going to notice something like that, it was Sigewinne. Any Melusine would, he was sure, but Sigewinne wasn't Fontaine's greatest medical professional for no reason.

    "Anything to worry about?"

"Doubtful. He's been here long enough, so if it was contagious, it would've already started making rounds. Besides, whatever it was seems to have been completely expelled; I'm just curious. I've never seen anything that leaves traces like his behind."

He blinked. Wait. Had the human understood him? Huh. Maybe it wasn't just the Traveler after all. The human introduced himself as Sora after checking for Sir Pouncelot's name and in response, Sir Pouncelot simply purred and butted his head into Sora's hand before he stood up. He immediately regretted the affection when he plucked from the ground, tensing as his tail whipped with agitation, but he quickly decided it was forgivable when he was given the space of Sora's shoulders. Well, technically, shoulder, but Sir Pouncelot was too big to sit on one shoulder, so he curled around to rest across both of them.

Kaeya used to let him sit like that, so he found the position to be favorable.

"Mond--" Wait, no. That was where he used to live. "My human's mansion in the 'Serenitea Pot'. I was napping on one of the guests' lap before I was here."

Hm. Now that he thought about it, he hoped Xiao wouldn't get in any trouble for his absence. It was hardly the adeptus' fault. Though, the Traveler seemed to be very fond of Xiao, so he was sure it would be fine.

"...Where are we going, Master Sora?"
