Modifications to Rolls: Will roll 2d6 per post to make things faster in SRP format. 1-2 miss, 3-6 hit.

Who goes first? Sunobari is currently 1st dice, Gadane is currently 2nd!

Gadane was eager to participate in the Sky Ceremony again this year. He didn't have the same drive to make an impression when he wanted to get Dohi's attention.. but he still wanted to impress her. It was almost as motivating to know that this year he could bring the title home to her, her family and her clan. What he wasn't expecting was to be up against someone from his birth clan right away, and it was an older lion at that.

"Uh," he stammered, standing opposite Sunobari.

"Gadane Dhatri," Sunobari answered with a smirk, giving his opponent a look up and down, "You seem well, married life must suit you."

Sunobari wasn't that much older than Gadane, especially compared to some of the extremely young competitors in this tournament.. but he remembered when this lion was born. It had been in Sunobari's first year in the Earth Clan and seeing youngsters roaming around had been part of what made it feel like home. So he remembered.

"Let's see if you can do better this year," he said.

Gadane sighed and braced himself to start.

Reroll - Sunobari is first dice, Gadane is second.

Their first move was a false start. They each moved suddenly as if to begin the fight and were thrown off by the sudden movement of the other, shifting quickly into a defensive maneuver. Sunobari was surprised to see Gadane change course and he paused for just a moment too long, it was awkward and inelegant but Gadane switched back immediately and moved in again. If they were both going to be cautious, someone had to be bold!

Gadane hits first, Sunobari counters!

Gadane Hits: 1
Sunobari Hits: 1

Stunned as he suddenly was, Sunobari was in no position to dodge the sudden attack launched by his opponent. It was strong enough to knock some sense into him and kick-start the instinct that would drive him through the rest of the battle, but it wasn't devastating by any measure.

"Good recovery," Sunobari remarked as he swatted back at the younger lion, annoyed that he had stumbled but ready to go now.

Gadane was amazed with himself for having landed the first hit but he remembered the danger of going head-first into a fight in the same moment as Sunobari easily countered him. There was a reason they had both held back when it looked like the other was going to barrel forward.

Gadane hit & Sunobari counters again.

Gadane Hits: 2
Sunobari Hits: 2

Gadane wasn't much of a talker and if he tried it now, he was only going to distract himself for the effort.. so he kept his mouth shut and lunged forward again. He needed to get on top of Sunobari or knock him to the ground if he wanted to win and neither was going to happen from a distance. He felt a momentary thrill when his pounce landed on top of the other lion but it was short lived as they hit the ground and Sunobari quickly threw him off using the momentum of the fall.

"You gotta have a plan for after you land," Sunobari said as they both rolled over and got back up. Gadane shook the first out of his fur and considered his next move.

Can Gadane end this now? Yes he can!

Gadane Hits: 3 - Gadane wins!

He needed a plan but the truth was that Gadane didn't really have one, he'd never actually won before. He'd lost the only fight he got to take part in last year and knowing he lost to the champion was only small consolation. He had no idea what he was doing then and he still had no idea now, he just wanted to win so he could impress Dohi.

Which was silly, if he stopped to think about it at all, because Dohi wasn't particularly impressed by feats of strength. He was a quiet, soft, squishy fella and she loved him exactly like he was.

Still, he liked the idea of showing off for her.

So he tried again. If Sunobari could just throw him off like that, he'd have to make himself harder to throw off.. that meant either getting him at the right angle or knocking his feet out like he'd originally thought. He wouldn't know his best option until he got there though so he pounced with only a half formed plan..

Sunobari was expecting to be hit again, especially after a taunt like that, but what he wasn't expecting was to be pounced by a flailing dead weight that couldn't be predicted or countered easily. He hit the dirt with a confused yelp and then he just laid there, accepting his defeat. Gadane was the first to move, picking himself up off his opponent and stepping back. He was pretty sure he had just won but he wasn't sure his opponent would agree..

"I'm not sure that counts as a plan," Sunobari said, picking himself up off the ground and shaking the dirt out of his mane, "But you definitely got me."

Gadane relaxed and smiled sheepishly.

"You'll have to do better than that in the next round," Sunobari went on, smiling and shaking his head, "Don't count on luck, that was a decent survival technique but it's not much for an actual fight."

How much did Sunobari know about fighting, Gadane wondered as he offered some advice. Looking at the few sparse tattoos on the elder lion, he remembered that despite Sunobari having always been here as far as he could remember, he actually came from outside the mountains. That automatically made him more of an expert in fighting than any typical Ela'wadiyi, so Gadane smiled.

"Thank you," he said, "I'll keep that in mind."

He definitely needed to be better prepared if he was going to win again!

Sunobari shook his head but he kept on smiling. The Earth Clan was out, officially speaking, but he knew the clan would be very happy to see a Dhatri still in the running. It was a strange coincidence that put them against each other first and there was no outcome that would have upset the majority of the clan.. Sunobari felt like he had lucked out this time, being able to lose and not upset anybody. Maybe he'd press his luck and try again next year.

Fin!
