The Index books were released on day 1 alongside the rulebook to tide people over until GW could get around to releasing codice. The lists they contain are not as extensive as those found in the codice, but they can be used to play the game. You could be cheap and get the Index books, but you will miss out on Warlord traits, army specific special rules, stratagems and relics.

I've had to ask around for what is included in miniature kits these days (still in the planning stage myself! sweatdrop ) and a kit does not contain the full rules, just the basic stat-line and weapon options, but no keywords or special rules. You will still need an Index or codex book to get the most out of your kits.

Thank you.

I think i'll get the index books anyway, because the Warlord traits seem to be the ones that are gone from "soup ingredients" unless they are the main anyway ...
cat_ninja
And i'll get main books of ... some of them, remains to be seen which, probably Mech, Imp and one or two of Spess.
By the way .....

Not to rain on anyone's parade here, but i heard of that too, but i've also heard it was an unlikely rumour.
Has it been confirmed?

You still need to assign a primary detachment and that detachment can use a warlord trait. 3nodding

* Looks at the list of current Codexes *
Hmm....
Space Marines, Astra Militarum, .... and possibly Grey Knights and/or Dark Angels.

I'm not likely to use any of the current others as primary ... or at all.
Codexes i might add if/when they show up, though, are Inquisition, Ad Mech, and when(?) Adepta Sororitas shows up next year.

Correction on my last post: you do not need to assign a primary detachment, you simply make one model in your army warlord and apply a warlord trait. Named characters must take the one listed in the codex, whereas regular models can pick one, be it one of the generic traits or one from their respective codex.

There is not much diversity in warlord traits from army to army, they all more or less have the same global traits, like the one that allows you to recycle spent CP's on a 5+. xd Sub-faction traits (Cadians, Ultramarines, Mars etc.) of a codex may show more diversity however.

Index Xenos 2, though if you wait a few months you can get the actual codex.

A separate Genestealer Cult codex?
Sounds nifty.
