I seem to have fallen into the process of starting a micropress, and I'm getting inducted into a national honor society.

You guys?

Congrats on the jobs (for you and Steven)!

Which honor society are you in Patrick? I'm in Alpha Lambda Delta (from way back when) and Psi Chi.

Myself- I decided my job at the hotel wasn't worth my health. I decided I could do low pay, bad hours, or high stress- but I wasn't going to do them all at once. The eye opener when I discovered I made so little money at my job that all my federal loans would be a zero payment under income based repayment because my annual salary was below the poverty line.

I finished my novel- I just started the editing work armed with my red pen. I'm really at a crossroads debating if I can get a "big girl" job or if I'm better off following my creative pursuits. I've made so little money in the past decade... why the heck aren't I following my dreams? sweatdrop

Alpha Beta Gamma, which is the two-year college Business honor society. My counselor is awesome.

I'm working on a novel again. Need to have something to go along with my other authors when we get the 'press' running.

Excellent on both points. Being stressed out at a job when there isn't enough money to justify it is no good. it's a good thing you finally got out.

Also, excellent work on finish the novel. What's it about?

As for the life and times of Headhunter:

- I'm still working at the same job and it's okay, for the most part. My immediate supervisor got sacked a month or two back, so I had to take on all of his responsibilities, which I really didn't want. I'm not management material. I'm thinking about looking for something else in due time, in part, because of this. Being that it's my first post-college job, I'm going to stick it out for a while longer just so its on my resume. Probably until the end of the year so I can build up enough money.

- Another reason I'm trying to build up money is because I want to move out soon-ish. Unfortunately, this will probably mean living with (several) roommates as I'm not making nearly enough to get anything alone that's better than a hovel but, oh well.

- I have begun the process of building a new computer. My old rig is starting to show her seven years, so I want to have the new one up by the end of the summer (though, the end of the year is more realistic assessment). I don't want to go with one made by one of the big manufacturers, what with their damn pre-loaded software and proprietary parts. The old one may be retired to media server duty.

- I need to get back to my own writing, as my in progress stories have barely been touched these past few months. I think its a motivation thing.

- I now own stock.

- I'm several years late on this, but The Wire is one of the best TV shows I've ever seen. I've burned through a season and a half of it in the past 2 weeks. That never happens.

Considered an SSD? I want to build a rig, and that's $600 I'm really tempted to spend.

This it usually is.

Preferred or voting? With who, if you don't mind me asking? Long term or short term investment? (I'm a business major, you should expect these kinds of questions!)

I'm definitely not getting an SSD. I want this thing to have at least 2 TB internally and SSDs of that capacity are WAY too much money. As it stands, I'm trying to keep the cost of the entire system as close to 1k as possible

It's preferred stock in Crown Media Holdings for the short term right now.

I didn't invest much just because I want to get a feel for this sort of thing while I learn more about it. I'm trying to do some reading up on mutual funds too, because I may want to get in that game as well. Expect me to pick your brain in the future.

Mutual funds are generally 'safer' than straight stock ownership (Since they can be insured similar to bank accounts.). They also have a lower reward, as a result.

And I'll help how I can.

They're insured against the fund company failing, right? Not the actual investment?

I think so. Less sure on the specifics there.
