Who here's had their wisdom teeth out?

What was it like?

After the anesthesia wore off, apparently I was demanding to see my best friend. I don't remember that, but since my mouth was swollen and I could only mutter, they probably misunderstood me. Then I remember getting into a wheelchair but I told them that I am not a wimp and I got out of the wheelchair and started walking. They had to force me back into the wheelchair. When my dad drove me home, I rolled down the windows, turned the music up high and started dancing.
So....the moral of the story is that some people get really affected by anesthesia................

As for the surgery part, it initially felt like a bunch of cotton stuck in my mouth. Then the numbness wore away and then the stitches were really annoying. It felt like there were canker sores on the places where they were removed. I was prescribed pain pills, but I did not have to take any because pain doesn't really bother me. I was eating normal, soft foods the day after. Also, you have to squirt water into the areas where they removed them a couple times a day or you will get dry sockets (which are super painful, I've been told.) Within a week, I was back to normal, except it took three weeks for the stitches to finally come out. The stitches are the worst part because they are so annoying.

It's been three years ago. The oral surgeon sewed my cheek to the bottom left extraction, which is apparently common because it gets swollen in there. Little did I know that you can remove the stitches after a few days, so my cheek healed to my gums.
So, a few days ago, I accidentally brushed really hard there and ripped it apart.
Yes. It hurts really bad.

I'm going to be awake too for medical reasons.
How many did you removed? I only need one because I only have three and the top two have come through fine.
I've had teeth pulled before (overcrowding) and it's kinda gross when it makes the crunchy noises, the dentist nearly pulled me out the chair getting a molar out. I'm guessing it was like that for you...except worse?
Did you get much pain or stiffness for long after? I'm not in much pain from the tooth but I can barely open my mouth because my jaw is so stiff and clicky.
I had all four removed at once, so for you it should be so much easier. I had to have painkillers in my system at least a day before the surgery, so I was pretty heavily medicated and didn't seem to be bothered by much at all during the procedure. There must have been noises but I can't remember being distressed about it, instead all I remember thinking "was that a hammer he just passed to his assistant? Oh wow look at that drill." It might have been a bit stiff at first, I recall my jaw felt pretty sore and bruised for a couple days. It did heal quickly though, much faster then I had anticipated. I had previously been told I should get braces and my mouth was a bit overcrowded, but after getting my wisdom teeth out things seemed to even out better and my jaw felt awesome.

I wouldn't recommend looking at your mouth directly after the surgery though, they want the blood to clot and stop on it's own so it's a bit gross although if it's just the one it shouldn't be as bad. Or they'll just stuff you with gauze and send you on your way. And the stitches dissolve after awhile or start coming apart on their own, so they aren't bothersome.

I had all four of mine out. They weren't impacted, but they had the "look" that meant they probably were going to be impacted, and they were shifting my back teeth a little out of whack.

I didn't have general anesthesia/numbing agent applied, they actually put me under because they had to crack my teeth to get them out/cut in my gum line. When I woke up, it didn't hurt at all. The surgeons kept asking me what the name of the song was that I was singing while under, and they seemed genuinely amazed that someone could sing while under/with their mouth pried open.

I felt pretty good afterwards. Got driven home, felt normal, but then I passed out at the kitchen table and knocked over my jello. Came to after, like, a minute, then started crying about not having jello. Mom sent sister out for more, and I was crying and saying it better not be green because I hate green jello. It was...odd.

I healed really, really fast. The stitches they used to close were dissolvable, so most of the time they would just pop out when I was brushing my teeth/doing a sea salt soak. I didn't swell so much, and I forced myself to eat normal food after a couple days because I wanted FOOD.

Overall, if you get a good surgeon who knows what they're doing, follow what they tell you to do (DRY SOCKETS = PAIN) and have a regular check up a week afterward/three weeks afterwards, you should be fine.

ALSO. Try to get them ALL out at once. I had a friend who had her top two taken out, and then two years later she had to get the bottom out. So she had to suffer through it twice, which sucks.

I had them removed two at a time. I had local anesthesia and then painkillers afterwards. They had to cut my gum line open and split the teeth into pieces to get them out, but that didn't hurt at all. Only thing that hurt in the actual operation were the needles they applied the numbing stuff xD I was totally awake the whole time.

I had 8 stitches in my mouth for 5 days, then I had to go back to get them removed. The pain wasn't too bad, but I did eat really strong painkillers. I could eat normal food after 2 days.

They really don't have to put you under for that. Mine went just fine even though they had to do exactly the same stuff. I'm surprised they did that, considering how small operation it is.

youch @ the cheek thing!

I'm glad I'm not having that kind of anaesthesia, I've been under it before and acted really "drunk" after and sang Singing In The Rain with my brolly outside the hospital.
All you guys are making it sound much less painful than a lot of the horror stories I've heard heart

I love looking at gross stuff though xd I watched my entire colonoscopy on the screen once!
Did you gag or retch much after you came round? I have a really sensitive gag reflex and I bet puking wouldn't be good for the healing teeth ^^;
How long did you have to keep the cotton padding/gauze in? I've had a molar removed before for overcrowding but I didn't have anything put on it, I just walked out with some tissues and wasn't allowed to drink for an hour.

My tops ones came through fine, I just wanted to gnaw on everything like a teeth baby. This one is all upright and in a normal position but every few months it starts giving me terrible pain and making my jaw stiff.
lol, did you ever remember what song you sang? I'm not being put under for it, I'm having those awful longneedle injections that feel like they'll pierce your brain gonk Hope you enjoyed your jello!
I'm going with a new surgeon because I moved, this is the first time he's doing anything to my teeth so I hope he's good! I loved my old dentist, he'd give me stickers even as an adult. How exactly does one "Fight decay the diplodicus way!"?

Idk. All I know is they said they had to peel the gum line away/dig into my jaw bone to shatter the teeth because they wouldn't pop it out/get removed easily.

Either way, I'm happy I wasn't awake for it. Thank god for good insurance. xd

I'm having the injections too. Are they just the same as the ones for regular tooth removal? I had a molar removed and had six injections but I can't imagine they'd use more than that.
How long do you reckon it took them to take the teeth out?

It's definitely not about insurance where I live... biggrin Our health care system works is a different way I guess.

But yeah, your operation sound exactly the same as mine, and I was wide awake. They had to take a small piece of my jaw bone too, to get to the roots. No pain though. Here they only put you under if you are like crazy afraid of the dentists.

I had over 10 injections... They actually tested. First they put about 8 around the areas and waited for the stuff to start working. Then they drilled a bit and asked if it hurt. I still felt a little sting and they put in a little more. If they cut your teeth into pieces to get them out, you'll need more than if they just pull them. They also told me that people need different amounts. So I guess in depends on how the anesthetic works for you.

The operation lasted about an hour each time. Mine were really hard to get though
