I am very much behind on news behind one of my favorite books, The Sparrow (which I think you should all go out and read). The books main character is Fr. Emilio Sandoz, SOJ and linguist. He's Latino, which figures prominently within the books.

Apparently Brad Pitt wants to develop a movie on it (yay!) and star in it as Sandoz. Granted, that news was from 2006, but still....STILL...what a waste and what a whitewashing that would be.

Yay for white Hollywood.

In other news, feeling sure that one of your friends will understand where you're coming from when you talk about white privilege, and then having said friend tell you to stop "trashing" his friend for deciding a conversation on how race affects how one grows up and what one views as normal was "beneficial to no one" really...hurts.

@Bastemhet: I know exactly how you feel. The Last Airbender movie has been a very sore issue within my group of friends. I'd like to think that just keeping up the conversation on it will do some kind of good. But sometimes I wonder.

I cannot tell you how upset I am that they ******** one of my favorite shows like that. I do have friends who know why I'm upset but don't care and say "It's just a movie" and plan on seeing it anyway. It is very frustrating. I want to see it too, but not if it means supporting even MORE whitewashing that completely ignores the context and content of the original show.

I think if the acting was of a caliber that was unparalleled by other actors, they could justify casting someone who does not fit the work that was adapted.

From what I hear, the acting in Air-Bender does not meet this exception.

Cel: Yep, I heard of those too, and my teeth are grating about the Asian father turned white thing. I can also see how casting a Black man as Thor would be problematic but as you say, it's Marvel... I've heard there's going to be a Bollywood movie with an Indian woman cast as Marilyn Monroe, and I'm kinda scratching my head on that one. I'm not too sure what to think about that.

Brass: I heard that the kid who plays Aang was cast for his martial arts skills and had to go to acting boot camp for a few weeks just to catch up. Also, my sis who saw the movie says the girl who plays Katara just whined and cried a whole bunch, which is in line with her prior acting experience...as a random girl who cries in a Miley Cyrus music video. *facepalm* Byebye, yet another strong woman lead/role model.

I have no idea what I did to my hip, but it has decided to hate me. Since last night, I haven't found a painkiller that works. Vicoden isn't even making me loopy. I don't like the idea of calling into work because of PAIN, but my toes are tingling. grr.

so the wedding/handfasting I just came back from? The ceremony was so hokey. It would have been better if the officiant hadn't felt the need to explain every step and symbol with the words, "And this symbolizes...."

I don't think the rest of the table was getting why I was cringing. At least the food was good.

Attempt number 2 at flea bombing the house appears to have been succsful. No flea bites last night and none yet on the critters. Of cours the full round of flea baths and topical and internal flea treatments should help with that. With any luck we've beaten them down this time.

I also burried all of my mice and rats yesteday. Tipsy, our last mouse died Saturday evening, I'd had him out playing earlier that afternoon. He was an older mouse, but his death still took me by surprise.
