I was really sick today, but got restless and ended up getting a ton of books on Irish history and music from the library. I have them til mid December to read whenever I'm not doing stuff for school, and if I can figure out a decent thesis and outline, I think I might end up doing an independent study on Irish music instead of a recital for my senior project. That would probably help me get into grad school for ethnomusicology at the Uni of Cork or Limerick eventually... yes it would. I'll have to convince my partner how awesome it would be to spend two years in Ireland though, which is sadly a difficult prospect with her. *goes off to ponder*

That sounds awesome! I'll probably be studying in Spain for a year next year and will have to leave my boyfriend here. I wonder how you two will deal with having to uproot yourselves for the sake of education? These kinds of things are really tricky.

Go for cork.
Limerick's not only a s**t hole, we call it "stab city".
I'll give you one guess why.

Recursive Paradox
That's a way of viewing it that I hadn't considered.

*might base a character on Fiddler in the next book. >.>*

I am a Soldier, slaying the enemy is part and parcel of war. Just as I accept that I might be slain, there is no blame when two foes willingly take the field. Involving non-combatants is horrid tho. Death frees the soul from the corporeal form, the method of liberation may be more significant than the act itself at times. Even if you have a mortal foe, there is no need to be cruel.
However, a Soldier must also know sacrifice as well as valor. Sympathy must be put aside for one's fellow warrior so that one may kill without the devastation it can wreak on a soul. It was my experience that people seem to have little trouble overcoming the fer of death... it is the fear of killing that is truely powerful.

Well, if it's the obvious one, I think I'll take your word for it. That upsets me though, as I like the look of their program sad
Actually, I've been meaning to ask you, do you think I'd be able to find someone in Ireland who'd be willing to teach me Sean Nós singing when my Gaeilge is still fairly limited...though that will hopefully be changed after two years of classes? I know there are very few areas that still teach that tradition, but I find it fascinating. That and caoineadh, and I can find all of 5 videos for each of them on youtube and almost nothing on google.

Sapphist - We're already planning on spending a couple of years teaching English in Shanghai. I made her promise that however long we stay in China, we stay that long in Ireland, since I'm not really a big fan of living in China (except the possibility of going to Mongolia, though!). I think I can get her to change her distaste for Ireland by proving to her that it's not all the over-hyped, romanticized place that most Americans make it out to be, or as bad as the classical Romans tell her it is rolleyes I just have to find her the right books, as she won't believe me. But the uprooting thing isn't a really big problem for us, as we've been planning on doing a lot of travel for quite some time, and I've been planning on going to Ireland for school for most of my life.

I've heard of Wardruna before, although I never bothered to check them out for some reason. Gaahl is a member, so as a metal head, I'm chuckling right about now (for those not into metal, the short version is that he's a former member of an infamous Black Metal band, and has publicly stated that he supported the Norwegian church burnings in the early '90s).

Anyway, thanks for the link! I am liking what I hear so far.

I still don't know if I'd be able to kill someone. I've never been in such a situation

You know, I just realized that three of the seven guilds I'm in (four, if you count the Modist guild) are based on discussion of religion. And I practically live in ED-M&R.

It is my most ardent wish that you never find out.

I suppose. I mean, out here in Reality Land (tm), most people don't even know I have a religion, let alone discuss it with me constantly. xd
