Collowrath Calixti Collowrath Trying to find food in the mid-west that hasn't been Americanized into oblivion is pretty difficult though. :/ Give me a recipe, some time to track down any ingredients not already in my pantry, and I'll fix whatever you want! blaugh I live in Nebraska, and I've been told I'm a fair cook. Oh goody! And on my way over, there's this Czech bakery that has ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that I could ever want in Omaha. I drove right past it this summer on my way to Pine Ridge SD and totally missed it. crying I'm in Lincoln, and we don't have the same way large immigrant population Omaha does (I suspect Omaha's is aided in part by proximity to Offut). But I manage to track down most ingredients I need, between the multiple Asian and Mexican food markets, the Indian one, the European one, Walmart, and the nearby supermarket. And I've gotten so used to them that curry powder, garam masala, rice noodles, and fresh tortillas have somehow managed to become pantry staples for me. sweatdrop

maenad nuri PhantomPhoenix0 Off to the Renaissance Fair today. Apparently, I am to match wits with their insult artist. This is the first year I haven't gone to Bristol and it makes me sad. I really want to go to Bristol!!!! I've yet to go to a faire this year, which is depressing. A group of friends are going in a couple of weeks, but once again, they're going the same weekend as our local Irish Music Festival, which always wins out! Especially because Natalie McNaster will be performing there this year!!! *goos all over*

I love Americanized foods! >.< What I've had of authentic Mexican, Italian, and German foods have been less than pleasant (for the most part). I'm not too fond of Americanized Chinese food but I've never had authentic. Authentic Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Indian food is good.

I miss authentic Korean food too.... emo .
But I'm with Aino; I like a lot of the Americanized foods for the most part.

I'm the opposite, Aino. I can't do Americanized Mexican and Italian food whatsoever. I used to think I hated Italian food until I had real Italian food. It's two completely different things.
Americanized Mexican food bears almost no resemblance to authentic Mexican food, except for tortillas. I go to my "aunt" for Mexican food when I crave it, and she's teaching me to make a lot of things myself. heart
I do have some guilty pleasures though. >.<

My mother's Italian cooking is the best! So anything else, Americanized or not, just doesn't compare 3nodding
And surprisingly enough, Korean Chinese food is my favorite, though I've yet to have Chinese food in China. I used to love Americanized Chinese food, until I lived in Korea, now I just eat it cuz I can't get any better where I live. I miss all the different Korean noddle dishes! And living in San Diego and Colorado, I used to get really good Mexican food all the time. I've yet to find a good place for Mexican food in Michigan.

I'll admit, some Americanized stuff is a guilty pleasure for me. But let me put it this way - I have friends who still refer to the day I learned McDonald's does what they jokingly refer to as "brats" as 'Black Thursday.' Seriously. I ranted for about an hour 'til they came up with a way to shut me up. (ie, they bought me a pint of Harp and took me to a show.)
Some things you really shouldn't mess with. *sigh*

Dinner tonight: Chicken in italian herbs, fettuccine in a sun-dried tomato alfredo sauce with asiago cheese, with roasted tomatoes and green beans (mine and local!) and brocolli (davits). With some cheese rolls that I froze from walmart.
Total calories appx: 548. Larger dinner since I didn't snack today.
A mix of cheap, conventional food and local/organic foods. Works for me!
Y'all want to live with me now. smile

I must say that authentic Indian food can be quite greasy.
Except our sweets and desserts are the best. ninja
