I'm completely befuddled as to how someone can live to adulthood only eating raman and pasta with tomato sauce.
How do people go their whole formative years without ever trying non-Americanized bastardizations of Asian and European foods?!

My goodness, it's almost three in the morning. I should not be up. I won't be for much longer. :/
Tea - I grew up pining after nut roles and koláče. blaugh And my grandmother's goulash. Trying to find food in the mid-west that hasn't been Americanized into oblivion is pretty difficult though. :/

Where in the midwest? I used to live in Chicago, and there are some pretty good places where you can still get food that hasn't been turned into Americanized McDonald's rubbish.

There are some gems, especially Cleveland, Chicago, and Detroit, from their large immigrant communities. Most of Ohio though is some kind of dead-zone.

Aino Ailill 500 Days of Summer is an awesome movie. I love the manner in which it is filmed. I agree! I really did not want to see it, thinking it was just going to be another shitty romcom. I was so wrong, I found the whole film so refreshing!

When you're a poor starving university student, you don't get much choice. Case in point: My mother bought two twelve packs of ramen noodles and dumped them in my university food kit. rofl

Off to the Renaissance Fair today. Apparently, I am to match wits with their insult artist.
And it was a long survey. I liked their question: "Are you a vegan or vegetarian". I toyed with mentioning they have no carnivore option, but I just told them they needed a neither option.

I explained that I had been a vegetarian but that I grew out of it.

TeaDidikai I'm completely befuddled as to how someone can live to adulthood only eating raman and pasta with tomato sauce. How do people go their whole formative years without ever trying non-Americanized bastardizations of Asian and European foods?! I've noticed that a lot of the US doesn't really have a food culture, which leads to a lot of people growing up never learning about how to cook or proper nutrition. I doubt I ever would've learned if not for becoming a vegetarian and my mum's protein concerns. neutral Collowrath Trying to find food in the mid-west that hasn't been Americanized into oblivion is pretty difficult though. :/ Give me a recipe, some time to track down any ingredients not already in my pantry, and I'll fix whatever you want! blaugh I live in Nebraska, and I've been told I'm a fair cook. Ramen is total s**t nutritionally, and tastes like crap (at least imo). And what's wrong with beans and rice if you're broke?! They're more nutritious, and tasty if you have access to salt, pepper, and maybe some spices.

Oh goody! And on my way over, there's this Czech bakery that has ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that I could ever want in Omaha. I drove right past it this summer on my way to Pine Ridge SD and totally missed it. crying True Colours of Destiny When you're a poor starving university student, you don't get much choice. Case in point: My mother bought two twelve packs of ramen noodles and dumped them in my university food kit. rofl Buy a small jar of yellow curry powder, some powdered cumin, and cayenne powder. Only put half of the spice package from the ramen in with the noodles, and use lots of yellow curry, two pinches of cumin, and one pinch of cayenne. Makes them much better and cuts down on the salt content.

Not in Canada, no. I don't know about all the chains up north his way, but the closest thing we have to that outside of independant grocers here is the Canadian Superstore, which is more a regular grocery store with some Trader Joe like elements to it or the farmer's market.

She's silly sometimes. Like last year, knowing I was rooming with at least 100 other first year Environment students, she brought me a 24 water bottle case and everyone was asking me, "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?" rofl
Of course, she's been teaching me how to cook and has given me a mini spice cabinet. Mmmm masala. And I'm rooming with another Indian person and a Chinese person. Who has a rice cooker. I've never had a rice cooker before or seen one outside of anime/manga. xD
