Recursive Paradox District 9 was really very awesome. That movie was the first sci fi movie I had seen in a long while that indirectly referenced its social commentary through the interactions between humans and aliens, instead of just being a shoot em up action movie. So much sci fi literature uses foils as a means to make social statements so it always disappointed me how little sci fi movies did this. D-9 restored some of my faith in the genre in movies. Also, did you know, Apartheid took place in the 90's? That's right. The ******** 90's. We have not come far at all as a species. And we're still crushing marginalized groups into the dust for no more reason than, "they're different" That movie really made me think to myself, "********, no wonder no aliens have made full contact. We are certifiable assholes." This is true. Also, the backlash after Apartheid demonstrated our potential for barbarity. In some cases, I wonder if it would be best to just let people slaughter each other until they have run out of reasons to fight. My only problem with this suggestion is that, inevitably, there will be those who want nothing of the horrors around them. While a violent person, I believe violence must be mutually consensual. To inflict it on a person who is not also willing is a shameful thing... unacceptable really. But the ability to opt in or out of a situation of conflict requires freedom, not just permission, but also the means , to go to a place free of such strife. It also requires such a place be existent. On an aside, in my opinion, as a species, we are not. So many other things conspire to divide us that we identify more alongst cultural lines than much else. The rise of Nationalism may well have been the death blow to a species identifying people. The schisms do not appear to be mending either. Symptoms, not blame, I point to South Africa, Kosovo, and the environs of Israel... most extreme and obvious examples, often in mainstream news. The best of all is that most sides tend to see themselves as righteous, either protecting themselves from ancestral foes, or avenging an ancient wrong. A moment of soap-boxing, but this is why I object so fervently to the ideas of group guilt and inherited restitution. This is where I have seen it lead all to often. cry
Wing, I am growing detached, methinks. The strangeness I feel in the company of others is more clear now, as tho the steam on the mirror is finally dissipated... and I see clearly myself and the place I am. I decided long ago, or was it decided for me, where I stood in relation to phlogiston and aether around me. Distance from that defining moment has given clarity and context to it, giving depth to notes and a fullness of melody I had not appreciated for the sound and thunder of sitting so close to the orchestra. The bouquet of aromas much more clear, now that the incense is not directly under my nose.

TheDisreputableDog Sophist Do you happen to know of any online resources selling blue beads that look like lapis lazuli? I've been waiting to make some prayer beads but the cost of the stone in total would be too high for my price range. If you look for "howlite lapis," you'll get a normally white stone dyed to look like lapis lazuli, which looks pretty good but is much cheaper ( frex). I've also used blue aventurine in combination with lapis lazuli and they blend well; however, I was using chips for both and I'd think you'd want smooth beads for a prayer piece and the two stones look more dissimilar when shaped round (aventurine is more "watery" looking).
Thanks for this. I've been looking around to see if there is a historically accurate guide to the Kemetic gods and their stone associations. So far I have carnelian for Sekhmet...aaand that's about it. I'm not even sure about that. The most I've seen mention of what was common in Egypt was in Mertzer's "Red Land Black Land," sans religious significance. I wonder if it's erroneous to think it will be simple. I should assume that whatever the Egyptians might've thought, it wouldn't be something like "this stone for this because blah." If anything there will be three different significances, two of them conflicting with each other, at least. xd
