Chat Thread: Chopsticks and teacups

Foo died in front of me today. he was a little over seven years old. a netherland dwarf rabbit, about the size of a football. his last moments were not pleasant at all, but now he should be at peace. long battle with cancer.

i was so upset at first but now i'm quite okay. of course i miss him, but it isn't as gut-wrenchingly awful as i thought it would be. i would go into detail but i won't bore you here, but i think adopting a pagan spirituality and a cyclic worldview has helped me cope with it a whole lot better than if i were still atheist or had a linear worldview.

i'm feeling about starting a topic along the lines of "Your Path and Death." any thoughts? i'm curious to see how all of your traditions regard death and what sorts of rites you perform and such.

want to watch foo? i have two very short videos of him on youtube, filmed within the last week. please ignore my talking to him in the background XD

I think a good idea would be to make a disclaimer about how the topic won't be about if the afterlife exists or not.

Because you don't want the thread to be whether the afterlife exists or not. If you don't put that down, the thread succumbs quicker to that argument.

@ gho: the breakfast club says differently. personally i see the soul in a cycle of death and rebirth throughout life, some more rapidly than others. others know they're dying and choose not to live again. they wither away inside. i am a death & rebirth-monger these days.

My online name, only Wing pronounces it properly; the pronunciation I give is mostly made up and weird, and by and large people call me Deo.

ninja I like it when people call me God.

i've always considered my name pretty generic and easily pronounced.

*headdesk* i was wrong.

so, in order to avoid it, i invariably have a discussion sometime before they've had the opportunity to mangle my name about how i think pronunciation and inflection is highly important and how i'm amazed people can't seem to get my name down.

that usually gets their attention to how my name is pronounced.

either that, or i just introduce myself by my nickname and that way it never gets brought up they're not saying my name right, 3nodding makes it even better to introduce myself to other pagans - "it's like Freya, with a "D"."

It's a tough one to pronounce, using a strange phonem that's used in Irish once in a blue moon. The only other word I know of that uses it is the Irish for drink (the noun) that being deoch.

Is it that the D is palatalized/iotated? Such as dyoch or Dyo - but the "y" sound is "blended" almost into the D itself? If that is the case, then it is common in Slovak and Serbian (the two Slavic languages I know best).

We use a separate letter for the sound - Ď in Slovak and DJ/Đ/Ћ in Serbian. A D always makes the sound before E and I in Slovak as well, by way of iotation.

that's how i was pronouncing it in my head!

my IRL name is pretty standard yet people can never spell it right.

i'm picky about pronouncing people's names correctly. growing up i went to a private school with a good international reputation, so it had LOADS of friends with non-American names. it's just a sign of respect to get a name down right, and i enjoy pronouncing the ultra complicated and lengthy ones [:

i'm afraid i can't pronounce Irish words to save my soul.

My name is Indian. Personally, if they get it close, I don't care. As long as they don't mispronounce it all the way. There's a sort of Indian pronunciation none of my teachers or friends can get at and I don't blame them. Again, my dad is an idiot and tries to get them to pronounce it the way it's supposed to sound, but he needs to get it through his skull that they can't. sweatdrop
