I've got an idea for a thread I want to post in here...
It isn't exactly pleasant, and it is pretty serious.
It's a matter that has weighted on me fairly heavily.
Would anyone care to help me with pre-posting so I can try to sort out how to present it without it seeming like an attack?

We have a few TTSNB coming out of the Hanford Site in south-eastern Washington from time to time. How about radioactive mud dauber wasps? Although, it's mostly just the mud they use for nesting material that's radioactive, but they can sure spread it around to some interesting places. That's not the only thing we get either.

Quote:
After all, in the past, Hanford has faced hordes of radioactive ants, chased nonradioactive escaped alligators in the early 1960s, dealt with a radioactive mouse invading north Richland in 1996, hunted marauding radioactive fruit flies in 1998 and constantly combats tumbling radioactive tumbleweeds.

The Hanford Site is one big TTSNB breeding ground. sweatdrop

EDIT: On the subject of platypuses (platypi?) I know the males have venomous spurs, and the sting is supposed to be godawful painful. There's no treatment for it since stings are relatively rare. Usually not lethal.

Are these radioactive Wasps much worse than regular ones? Any recorded attacks?
I didn't see any in the article.
I'm adding them to the preliminary list.

Thanks for the Platypus update, adding.

'Fraid not. Further reading confirms that they sound a lot worse than they are. Darn! (except not really, since I live not too far from the Hanford Site eek ) The primary threat is that they could spread radioactive mud by building their nests in cars, buildings, etc.

Hmm... oh! *snaps fingers* How about Humboldt squid?

Quote:
The fiercest of all the cephalopods, a group that comprises squid, octopus and cuttlefish, the Humboldt is notoriously cannibalistic. "As soon as one of their fellow squids gets hooked, and they can see it is caught or behaving differently, they attack it and start chomping away" Hanlon says.

They're usually placid, but can get incredibly aggressive while feeding.

Quote:
As Cassell tells it, one attacked his camera, which smashed into his face, while another wrapped itself around his head and yanked hard on his right arm, dislocating his shoulder. A third bit into his chest, and as he tried to protect himself he was gang-dragged so quickly from 30 to 70 feet that he didn't have time to equalize properly, and his right eardrum ruptured. "I was in the water five minutes and I already had my first injury," Cassell recalls, shaking his head. "It was like being in a barroom brawl."

wikipedia
Reports of recreational scuba divers being attacked by Humboldt Squid have been confirmed. One particular diver, Scott Cassell,[9] who has spent much of his career videotaping this species, has developed body armor to protect against attacks.[10] Each of the squid's suckers is ringed with sharp teeth, and the beak itself can tear flesh, although it's believed they lack the jaw strength to crack heavy bone.[6] Nevertheless, they eat their prey by grabbing it with their tentacles and biting it repeatedly with their beak. Working together, several squid are able to devour large prey very quickly.

Fiddler, you're welcome to bounce stuff off of me, via PM or aim or whatever. You've listened to more fair share of my drama, and I owe you one, plus I'm happy to do it.

In other news, late March snow in Albuquerque is just plain weird.

I've officially chosen my major.

I'm going to major in English, with minors in Spanish and gender studies. AND I'm doing so with the full blessing of my mother. How awesome is that? biggrin
