I had a fabulous Halloween. I threw a party, as always. We ate nachos in huge quantities and dressed up and handed out candy to kids and watched Carnivale. Most years I make a costume, but this year, with the wedding and going back to school, I just didn't have time, so I wore my ren faire costume.

Terence also wore his, but I made him complete it, since he only had a shirt and hat so far -- I made him get tights with a codpiece. I was so overly amused by this, you have no idea. He was extremely bashful about it, but said it was surprisingly comfortable. Now I just need to convince him to wear them year round!

Tonight -- well, yesterday night I guess it is now -- we went to a Capitol Steps (political satire songs and skits) concert, which was a HOOT. I highly recommend their backwards-talk Spoonerisms -- the MP3 and text of their "Load to the Erection 2008" is available online.

When we came out of the concert at around 9 PM Pacific, people were celebrating in the streets. A large percussion band/drum circle had gathered outside the music hall (they were good, too) and people were cheering and giddy. It was great fun.

School makes me busy. Sigh.

Well we have an Obama but California is pretty much sunk. Stupid prop 8 taking away from this victory. >.<

My county voted Obama! Actually, a couple counties did; pity Nebraska still went to McCain. Still nice to see there are a few blue spots, even if I don't interact with any Democrats on a daily basis. ^^

On the downside, Initiative 424 passed. I really, REALLY hope it passed 'cause of the ridiculously misleading language on the ballot and not because the asshats here consider affirmative action programs "preferential treatment" and "no longer necessary." Ugh.

And Arizona, and Florida, and Arkansas. Marriage is now constitutionally unequal in Arizona and Florida, and Arkansas bans unmarried cohabitating couples from adopting or fostering children under the age of 18.

Connecticut voted down their prelude-to-an-amendment question, thank god. And King County in Washington now has protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, and dis/ability. And Montgomery County in Maryland gets to keep their gender identity/expression nondiscrimination laws without even going to the polls because the opposition's petition was tossed out.

EDIT: Wherefore art quotes not working?

I am glad this election crap is over though. I got 5 phone calls yesterday from Obama's campaign - even after I asked them to stop calling. Plus...they actually showed up at my house. OMFG scream The last call I got was at about 8pm thanking me for voting...which I found highly amusing since I didn't actually vote. xd

gods, don't remind me...

it was bad enough being a member of a state that McCain "represents", but now, after this bull...i'm contemplating moving if the supreme court doesn't rule that amendment as unconstitutional.

Actually, the absentee ballots from California haven't finished trickling in.
There are about 4-5 times the number of ballots left to count, as the lead Prop 8 currently has... ninja
If it does pass, will people support me in making a proposition to define marriage as between a man and a woman of the same race? You know, divided, as The God of Genocide intended? Because, you know, Shem invented marriage. rolleyes
Or, alternatively, a bill to end secular meddling in the sacred institution of marriage, removing all legal status of marriage and creating a civil union system... ninja

Katie-Kat, your tale is abominable.
Explain to your Mother the difference between having an opinion and libel/slander, claiming to have seen a birth certificate is not an opinion, it is an attempt to legally disqualify a person from their elected office. Which, coincidentally, if untrue, is highly illegal.

Also, for clarification, an amendment cannot be ruled unconstitutional to the constitution it amends. By it's very nature it is now the constitution, revising the previous document. Now, if it is in violation of a higher charter that is different.

@Fiddler: What if the amendment contradicts another part of the constitution?

We'll see. NO On Prop 8 was holding out until yesterday when they seem to have given up on the absentee and provisional ballots.

There was a thing in Washington last year about making marriage legal only in the event of procreation between the couple, because the decision against same-sex marriage was made with the concept that the State had a legitimate interest in ensuring reproduction. But it was withdrawn.

Yes. And expanding the legal institution to include more than one person. Practical complaints are that it would be too complicated or it would mess up taxes, but I don't buy it. There's not a lot of reason to be married secularly in and of itself except for the protections and shortcuts it offers, and the money and property issues. So let's have legal unions with broader inclusion and leave marriage to the spiritual.
