I've looked forward to playing Fable II for months and months and months.

So Isaac brought it home last night, and I vegged out on it for hours and hours. It's a ******** amazing game thus far.

Except for one thing.

Where do they have you grow up?

A "Gypsy Camp."

The plus side (kinda) is, they don't keep you there long. You're in, you're out. And they never actually say it (but when you check out your map, it's written all over the place).

The downside, of course: WHAT THE ******** ********?! I'm thinking of writing the developers. They clearly put research into period clothing for the entire game, along with weapon styles, etc. And they even display a few different kinds of wagons/caravans, so they obviously researched that...but they didn't think to do research on the people themselves?

You can do research on them and not run into the fact that the word is insulting. I think there was a society in England that originally started an outside interest in Rroma culture that was called something like the society for G~ Culture or something. It's not a hard thing to get that it's insulting, but it's entirely possible.

Also look at White Wolf. They did enough research into Rroma culture to be able to bastardise Vlax, but they still have a supplement called G~. Though they did a whack of other ******** things like turn G~ into mystical ninjas.

Some people also think that G~ only refers to travelling people, and don't even know that there's a culture behind it, one that doesn't appreciate the name.

In Fable's case, I think it's an honest mistake, but it is also a chance to raise awareness about the fact that A. Rroma do in fact exist and B. the word is offensive.

Fantasy is infuriating with how much research some authors can do, and how little they truly know.

I get it, I understand the word is offensive.....but what the hell else are they supposed to call it?

Anything? Traveller's Camp, Nomad's camp, Base camp, some name that has nothing to do with the people who live there?

It's not that hard.

That reminds me. I need to go through a fantasy piece I wrote and make sure I don't have any offensive aspects tied to the cultures I approximated in it.

I don't believe I have anything resembling what Fable did though.

I have sci-fi/fantasy story that's heavily going to be drawing from Norse mythos.

I usually model cultures in Europe for the actual countries and cultural stuff of the characters themselves.

But I generally create a mythos all of my own simply because I'm really good at world building and I can make some really interesting stuff.

Oh no, well, this world is a lost colony of Earth from the Atlantean age.

My sci-fi universe stretches the ancient cultures back about 10 millenia.

Sort of Stargate-ish? I actually borrow heavily from Greek and Norse stuff when I do sci fi but more in just having references to them culturally and not really as a religion in place.

I was going to say that sounded a bit Stargate-ish, but I could hardly contain my fandomish glee.

My sci-fi influences are other science fiction shows, unfortunately. I've been working on a setting I started way back in high school and only now is it actually sophisticated enough to work. I just finished this huge nearly 30 page section of it last weekend.

BWUH? Seriously?

Yep, seriously.
Evidently, I'm not really capable of being anything expect a Soldier very well, and that's enough to entitle me to 100%, completely non-functional in modern society thanks to psychological conditioning, disability.
The preliminary tests reveal a string of symptoms that look like other persons who are currently getting the 100%.
Namely:
Extreme and unreasonable expectations out of co-workers, especially in regards to punctuality.
Feelings of personal betrayal when co-workers fail to meet those expectations.
Lack of initiative at work, outside of pre-defined parameters.
Dispute resolution processes include, if not are limited to, violence between contesting parties.
Inability to empathize with civilian concerns. Basically, it came to the attention of the therapist that if someone hasn't been in a life threatening situation, it is hard for me to take their convictions seriously. Which is partially true. Untested virtue is no virtue at all in my book... it doesn't make people untrue, just means they are untried, unproven. Also, if a situation isn't as dire as the ones I have personally faced, it seems I disregard them, or respond patronizingly. Also, some of the stuff people whine about seems so painfully petty.
Extreme patronizing of "peers". Basically, I seem to view people who have more mundane backgrounds as petulant children... not sure I agree with this appraisal, but hey.
Lack of identity with my "peers". Okay, so that much is absolutely true, unless someone has been in a firefight, they aren't my peers by any stretch of my imagination.
There are others, but those are the big ones.

Thank you Saint Dreya.

It's silly how much fun I'm having being a Dark Elf healer for the Halloween event.

Actually, I think I saw BlueRoseTorn in the thread I frequent to heal.

Hope everyone else is having fun with it as well. smile
