Autumn arrived on que for me. Fog, cold and that yummy crispness in the air.

So my first day wasn't that bad. I even spoke to some people I haven't spoken to in a long time.

I'm impatient to start classics!

I might just buy tea a Momo. xD

Fiddler's cute. whee Are there ReReCon pictures yet? 3nodding

I'm reading this odd book called Postmodern Magic by Patrick Dunn. It has some good stuff about magic as symbol manipulation. But it is jarring that the author seems to believe any symbols from any culture are up for grabs, cultural imperialism be damned, with the caveat that using their symbols willy-nilly may not be as effective as creating your own...but states that evoking a spirit by ordering it into a triangle is downright "cruel" and "rude." I'm about halfway through it. Some of it will be really useful to me, I think. I just wish it didn't have the whole "Symbols are inherently meaningless and therefore you can find them/take them wherever you want and make them mean whatever you want! biggrin " bit.

Also, Tea starts a lot of threads in this guild. I'm behind.

Irony.

Okay, post to get in things I missed by being up to my neck in school:

Yay Nuri and your account getting-backness!
Yay Deo for helping!
Yay Tea for quest completion! Monkeys for all!
Yay Wing on tattoo - nice ink!

Now, does someone want to lend me their brain as an external storage device? I've got two tests and a quiz this week, and a LOT of memorization to do before then. crying

Irony.
I'm almost done with it now and there's not really much else to recommend it. A quote from the section on divination: "The runes reflect a culture of struggle and fierce determination. Turning that culture into a gentle, kind, bourgeois middle-class American clone is insulting at best" (16 cool . But...I thought I could take symbols from anywhere and say they mean whatever I want! stare

The book quickly stops being about what I would call "postmodern magic" (the stuff in the beginning about symbol manipulation and the power of magic being in its aesthetic value for the practitioner) and degenerates into a typical hodge-podge of everything a beginner wants to know about magic; divination, magical attack, servitors, your Holy Guardian Angel (referred to as the HGA), remote viewing, evocation, invocation, spirit classes, magical groups... The author just says "this is what a mage should do and know" and never says why by connecting it back to the original thesis. He dismisses whole sections of the occult world by saying "I find them uninteresting" with no further explanation.

My recommendation is get it from the library or borrow it from someone if you must. Don't waste your money.

In other news, Tropical Storm Hanna is raining on us. But there doesn't look like any damage in my area so far.

So I went to try out this new natural food grocery store. Overall; meh. Feels artificial, like they try too hard. However, their bulk food section interests me, as does the bulk herbal section. I now know where to get all that herbal crap now!

A little disappointed though; I was interested in their personal care section -- same things as everywhere, except a little more selection and a couple dollars more. I want to support the little guy (and these are local stores, so I will be buying from them every so often) but its hard on my pocketbook.

On the plus side, I got hard candies and chocolate, and tea-infused chocolate. It's different!

So how long can a person stay in bed before:

a) feeling guilty about it
b) getting bedsores, aches or other discomforts
c) running out of entertainments
