So, for the sake of irony, zOMG switched the ethnic slur of one group for the ethnic slur of another group.

Nicu is no longer a G~, he's now a T~- an ethnic slur for the Pavee. gonk
Wow, that deserves a slow clap, if one was to give slow claps for ironic misgivings.

I don't see any evidence for a rule against referring to gods in "human" terms.
Wouldn't that depend on the deities? When it comes to the Hellenic gods- wouldn't the prohibition against hubris in the Maxims apply?
That would be the other reason I hesitate to label the Hellenic Gods in human terms.

The Greek terms help to denote age, but saying Zeus is a man smacks of hubris to me.

What new ethnic slur is this?
I'm afraid 'T~' Dosen't inform me of all that much. xd

*edit*
I found the site.
Are the Pavee Irish?

I ask because the term is used pretty widely in this area. But not to describe a particular travelling culture. From my understanding of how it is used round here, it is used for any travelling group regardless of ethnicity or culture, if they move onto private land, leave rubbish and s**t everywhere or something similar.
There was a group a while back that got loads of horses taken from them by the RSPCA because they treated them like s**t and raced them for bets.

I've heard it in other places being applied specifically to Irish, but here they'd just be 'Irish travellers' *shrug*.

I think it depends.
I think that the gods are 3D beings capable of reason. I reckon that if I said that zeus was a man in passing and honestly just used it as a figure of speech and meant nothing by it, the gods would know this and not take offense.

"Tinkers" I would imagine.
The Irish travellers will often refer to themselves as tinkers when, and only when, they are workers of tin. To refer to all of them as tinkers is sorta like referring to all plantees (those who aren't travellers {be they pavee or no}) as computer programmers. It's racist.

patch99329
Are the Pavee Irish?

Some of them.
Some of them are English.
The are not of the Gael, they themselves hold better understanding of where they came from but they don't tend to talk about it with plantees.
Their language is a combination of a cant dialect of goedelic and saxon, I believe.

The Pavees can be quite considerate.
If they can't get a holding site (that is a specific plot of land with ameneties) they will often rent land or work on farm land for right to hold in fallow land. The land is left, in these cases, in as good a condition as it was found.
In my memory, we have had two seperate groups of Pavees where I was growing up. The first came back because their reception was so positive. Alas, in between the Pavees the first and second time, some English new age travellers came and destroyed a farmer's field and assaulted him and his wife.

From what I understand of Pavee culture, that's actually forbidden.
They're allowed to bet, but mistreating a horse is not only damaging your wealth, it's damaging the wealth of your children.

sigh I had a post, but gaia ate it.

Basically, my prof doesn't like the terms 'man and 'woman' given that she's had students over humanise the Gods, and after a greek myth class which was opened to an option to philosophy students that proceded to do just that, I can understand.

*waves fist angrily at gaia) Stupid post eater.

Gotcha -- sometimes I relate to the gods in human terms, because well -- I'm human. This is how I know to relate, even though I know they are far different from we humans.

If I anthropomorphize (sp?) an Aspect, just because it makes channeling its energies easier, not because I believe that it has human qualities for reals, does that make me polytheistic? O_o

No more than a Chaote is for creating servitors, I imagine.

Now I need to look up a Chaote...

I could only find a racial slur that started with K for the Pavee. o_O

I know that the Aspects, which can be loosely compared to deities in my path, are not human in any way unless they're a specific Aspect of a specific human trait. And then it's just that trait.

I do admit to applying a certain level of anthropomorphization to them to comprehend them better. But I remain aware that it's nothing more than a tool to understand not actual knowledge regarding that Aspect.

Ah. The one with the K is "Knacker." I guess apparently the word "Pikey" is also a racial slur for various Irish groups and the word "Chav" originally included them and the Rroma.

Chav is a Rroma loan word- it means Rroma Boy, and the term Pikey is used in some dialects to denote a person who has committed such a horrible offense and was found guilty in a Kris that they are dead to the Rroma.

*absorbs knowledge* Yay, words!

I wonder if I can get my English friends to stop using the word 'chav' on those.. people with.. the.. weird outfits. Seems kinda silly when you know what it means.

Tea, I think you're being a bit too PC here.

I could get behind you on the "Gypsy is a slur" thing, but you're kind of reaching with this one. I've seen Tinker used a bunch as a word to describe someone whom tinkers, like this Nico character presumably does.

I'm not saying that there aren't usages of the word that aren't nice, but I am saying that those aren't common knowledge.
