patch99329 Celeblin Galadeneryn It only gains my ire when Artemis is suddenly the be all and end all of deities for women. That's the point when I must say seriously, fools, what the bleeding hell happened to Hera? I'm very much the same in this context. But I think people don't look at hera enough and simply see her as a jealous shrew. In addition, when did hekate become a crone? --- I think I have tonislitis. gonk
I think Hecate become a crone the same time The Morrigan became a Maiden-Mother-Crone who teaches of 'empowerment of self'. Ugh.

Teague the Druid ]I actually had a little Artemis obsession when I was younger. There's something just so poignant about a virgin huntress. She's like the ultimate "liberated" goddess. Her associations revolve largely around hunting, which is a primal way of providing for oneself, and she's free from men. I don't know why I should appreciate that so much, being a male with dim views of celibacy in many cases, but I do. She can also be a hinky b***h with detatchment issues and a tendancy to bully.
Like sister like brother.
Not that she can't be awesome but I hate when people paint her as the ULTIMATE FREE WOMAN. (which you didn't, but just go with it)
1. She isn't a woman. Oh, she's female alright, but not a woman. Thus the rules are different.
2.She may be free from men, but from male influence? Not as much. I can't imagine Zeus being all that friendly if she told him to ******** off. Note that Zeus isn't a man either.
Quote: Hera is a goddess of the family unit. In mythology, she always seemed largely defined by her marriage to Zeus to me- as in she might be identified as "Zeus's wife." I'm not aware of that epithet. I'm unfortuately more familiar with the Latin versions, as I've most extensively read the Aeneid, but the most common epithets are Queen of Heaven or Saturn's Daughter, not Wife of Jupiter (though you could make the argument of Queen of Heaven). As for definition, her largely defining marks, for me, has been her attitude. Despite being the Goddess of Marriage, her actions are largely not that of the appropriate Greek wife. However, once you realise she's forsaking certain favoured attributes of the wife in her crusade to uphold marriage.
Quote: In the Hellenic pantheon, it is not Hera who I would not expect to be so eclipsed (no pun intended) by Artemis, but Demeter and Athena. What about them? While, I may be wrong, but the shrines to Demeter or Athena were greater in number than Artemis. Any favouring of Artemis in todays culture I attribute to ignorance. I mean, we aren't farmers, so I can see why Demeter gets less attention, but you'd think that you'd focus on the Goddess of wisdom, not the wild, given our society.

No rusty pick ax -- just good reading, UPG and my own sense of good judgment. I think our arguments are fun anyways. I'd only be alarmed if you suddenly had a shrine to Ares. Just.... WHY?

TeaDidikai mute_coyote So, during the summer around here it usually rains a grand total of twice, usually accompanying a thunderstorm. Over the course of the past two weeks, we've had FOUR DAYS WITH RAIN! Did fall come early or something? Yesterday, it was in the 90s and clear (normal); today, it is in the 70s and rainy (wtf??). *looks up at sky* I don't understand you!!! *runs off to weather website to figure out what's going on* Gotta Love WA. So Mute- we need to figure out a time to have tea together. I have Haddie up and running, so life should be good. Well, I get back into Seattle next month. If you're in that region, we might work something out.
I'm just a little shy about meeting somebody I've only known online. It's not something I've done before, and I've been getting assorted warnings about it since I started using the internet. >_> It helps that you have a lot of people here who've met you before and can vouch for you. It's nothing personal, I'm just cautious.

As much as I can see some of the modern attitudes towards Ares, he's not a god I'm going to set up a shrine for.
If I wanted to do physical excellence, like a lot of the modern stuff focuses on, I'd be more apt to stick with Apollo or Artemis.
And thank you for making the distinction about Artemis. She's not a woman -- she's an adolescent by modern standards if anything.

She's not a woman -- she's an adolescent by modern standards if anything. She's youthful, but she's not really an adolescent either. My point was that Artemis isn't a woman, not only because she is a parthenos, but because she isn't human! People often have the problem of equating humanity, and all the trappings and responsibilities thereof on Gods that take human forms. As such, I don't refer to them in terms which render humanity upon them, especially for Hera (I've been witness to a fellow student being chastised for calling Hera... I think what he used was crazy woman, to which Dr. Fagan calmly replied that he needed to stop thinking in terms of the Gods being human, as they don't follow our rules. I must say that I do so love that crazy woman, though. Dr. Fagan, not Hera xd )
