I wish people would take a deep breath.

Most people won't get it because most people are caught up in systemic racism (as we all are), ignorant of it, and resistant to becoming unignorant because that may cost them some precious modicum of privilege, if only the privilege of ignorance. If educating people to be non-racist were easy, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X would have handled it, along with their less known female allies who would have tackled racism and sexism at once, since they're a step ahead of the rest of us by having both areas they are aware of.

As I've said many times before--there is nothing wrong with admitting that you were incorrect about an issue, and learning from your mistakes.

And with this issue: I've used the word in the past, as I've used other words without realizing they are offensive. But, once educated, adjustments should be made. And, with words such as "dumb," "lame," and "retarded," it takes effort and time to adjust your vocabulary. I slip up all the damn time; I did two posts ago, I do it at work, and I do it at home. It's not an instant thing.

But...more people need to learn to admit when they're wrong, and bow out gracefully. This thread is getting ridiculously out of hand, and it probably won't stop until the thread is deleted or somebody loses it and gets banhammered.

I had read the whole think when it was only 26 pages, but...I'm not about to do back-reading. I'll just lurk for now.

I'm in the same boat; I had no idea it was an offensive word, but now that I do it's been removed from my vocabulary (not that I used it a great deal before...).
