Waitwaitwait, MoonJeli--Einstein is thought to have had dyscalculia? For real?

Waitwaitwait, MoonJeli--Einstein is thought to have had dyscalculia? For real?

Yes. Many people have found he did very poorly at the *mechanics* of arithmetic (in school and later) but was a genius at logic and theory. Most people with dyscalculia don't have trouble with the logic and so on (physicist Emma King has dyslexia and dyscalculia), only processing the numbers.

From the WHO:

"The deficit concerns mastery of basic computational skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division rather than of the more abstract mathematical skills involved in algebra, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus."

Wikipedia sums it up as a "learning disability which affects a person's ability to understand, remember, and/or manipulate numbers and/or number facts (e.g. the multiplication tables)."

*cough* I know. I had to change majors 'cause I'm not capable of the number manipulation required for chem and I'm seeing a psychologist this summer that specialises in learning disabilities for a diagnosis. That's just...really neat, is all.

Ha ha. I have dyscalculia myself. And, just as stereotypically, I can totally do all the logic and theory and so on, but when it comes to numbers, they won't stay still in my brain. I write them backwards, upside down, can't sequence, can't add them without using my fingers or check marks, and so on. I also still don't know right from left without having to pause and think about it for a minute. I'm 27 years old. sweatdrop

I'm going to the disability offices at the college on July 3rd to get extended test times and, hopefully, permission to use a calculator or printed tables. My sister is majoring in math (and possibly astrophysics), and used to work at the college I'll be attending as a math tutor, so she is really helping me figure out what I can do in order to succeed.

My fiance double-majored in math and physics, too, so he's going to tutor me.

Too many books is a bit like the glass is half empty thing.

One could say we have too many books because we have hundreds teetering over the edge of the shelves above my head; ready to fall and kill me at any second.

Others might contest, and say we merely have shelves that are too small. xd

*head pat* It'll be fine.

I have a love hate relationship with science.
Yesterday I wanted to kill everyone because of electrolysis. But today I'm thinking chemistry FTW.

This is about as interesting as my life gets atm. emo

WHEE! It'll be a smashing good time.

This week in general is going to be made of copious amounts of awesome. I might just explode.

I did JROTC in high school and never made drill team because I got left and right mixed up. sweatdrop I didn't know what dyscalculia was until this year (my first year of college) when I started career counseling and weekly mentor meetings after failing first quarter and they were like, "Um, do you by any chance have this learning disability?" Failed at math all my life and teachers always thought I was lazy, stupid, or both except for a single chemistry teacher. >.<

I just changed majors after first quarter. Was originally focused on chemistry and biology, hoping to go either into biochem or biotech, but once I figured out my math skills will probably never be good enough I switched to psychology. *shrug*

I love my parents. I went home this weekend to get rid of a load of junk from my room in preparation for redecorating it. It's being done for the first time in ten years, because I loved the colour scheme so much it didn't cross my mind to change it. And well, I've been more or less moved out for 3 years and Mam wants to use the room as a spare room when I'm not around.

So she thought it would be nice if I made a wallhanging to cover the pale spots on the panelling. Where the posters had been the wood didn't tan. So she wants me to make something for the room, and imagines it'll take a couple of winters.

She also said she was going to get Dad to install book shelves on one wall. I've been stacking my books under the stairs since I was 11. Bookshelves? Bookshelves??? YAY!

I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as too many books, merely insufficient shelving and storage!
