My social life has been sporadic all summer. I'm going out with some friends to see Improv tomorrow (18+ show, tomorrow is my 18th birthday, I think it fits biggrin ). I'm actually scared once college starts I'll end up getting a social life and abandoning my work. I mean, I'm going to be living with two other girls, in the biggest dormitory on campus, in the band (which I'm told is like a big family) in this huge University with 12,000 students (15 if you count grad students). Everything is there on campus. I'm bound to get a social life, and my writing shall suffer. sweatdrop

That's exactly what happened to me last year. XD

I was living with a bunch of other people, and although according to them I spent most of my time in my room, I did more socialising than I'd ever done before so it was a bit of a shock to the system.

This year I'm living with three other girls in our own house, so hopefully it won't be quite so bad. I mean, we'll spend a lot of time together for sure, but I know that at least one of the girls spends a lot of time online in her room so I should be able to get away with it as well. XD Plus, the two creative writing classes I'm taking should kickstart me a bit as well. :3

I noticed that starting to happen more toward the end of last year than anything. But I also found that it's possible to get around it and still have an amazing social life. Just dedicate a block of time to writing every day/week, whatever works, and be sure to shut yourself in and close the door. After you do it for awhile, it becomes routine and works really well. My friends actually made a point of not coming to my room during that time period because I never answer the door when they do.

And since you're rooming with people, I'd suggest plugging headphones into your computer so you can tune them out. Or go to the library. Or a park bench. Someplace you can just get away from people.

Granted, there are going to be times when you're not going to do it because of special events and such, but it's at least a way to start, you know? You can adjust accordingly depending on how the year progresses.

Well, I moved in today, so hopefully things will all come into fruition a bit now. I have Tuesdays and Thursdays off from class, so aside from reading I have to do for those classes I have the day to myself. I think I'll make it a habit that I spend at least an hour writing then, and during the rest of the week I'll see when I get time and make a schedule of it. =3

No, it's hard when you're settling in. It doesn't help that our house currently has no heating, no hot water, a huge leak in the kitchen (which has swollen the back door so bad it won't shut any more) and numerous other things wrong with it. XD It's hard to focus on anything when you're so cold your fingers are numb and you haven't washed in three days. gonk

Ah, student living. rolleyes

Oh dear, that sounds awful! I hope everything gets better soon, it really sounds like crap down your end!

Yeah, we are struggling a bit! The house is okay, it's just old and our landlady seems very reluctant to spend cash on getting it fixed up like it should be. We got new windows over the summer, and we were scared that might be all we got.

However, today a man came to replace our boiler. We still don't have heat or hot water (we had it momentarily yesterday so we could shower, but it's gone again now) but that should be sorted by lunch tomorrow. The new boiler is shiny and awesome, and as soon as it's fitted completely there should be much fewer problems. Also, somebody is due to come and look at the leak. I doubt they'll fix our door because it's not a major problem, but they'll have to fix the leak because water is dripping onto electrical cables. They can't escape!!

Baha.

On another note, I got a vague inkling for a short story whilst watching Scott Pilgrim for the second time last night. We have to hand in a 1.5k short story in 6 weeks or so, so I might write it and leave it, and then see if it's suitable to hand in. I've got plenty of time to write something decent.

Also, my creative writing teacher is brilliant. I had my first session with him yesterday, and I can't get over how much I like him. Plus, he emails us with writing tips, blogs, critics, short story authors etc., outside of class hours. He's brilliant!

If you like short stories, and short story criticism, check out the online blog 'Reading the Short Story' by Charles May. It's great. AND he said to check out "Narrative Magazine", which is an online magazine and is free to sign up to. I've not checked it out yet, but I'll bet it's pretty cool. :]

Now checking out the blog, the online magazine looks pretty good as well! Thanks! How did you find your first year overall?

Glad to see everything is getting back to normal-ish anyway!

I LOVED my first year! In fact, I'm kind of wishing I could do it again. XD This year everything is more stressful because obviously the grades count more this time. sweatdrop I don't like the added pressure!

I'm glad you like the links! If I get any more I'll be sure to pass them on. I mean, why not, right? :3

Hahaha I hope it will be as fun as you say. It's weird as I only have four hours of English timetabled in, the rest is me! Yes, any links would be lovely thanks!

I actually have less hours this year than I did last year. I have no lectures this year, and six hours of seminars (one of those is creative writing). Second year is so much harder though, as in the work-load is so much bigger. Now they know you can do it, they push as hard as they can. x___x

I'm still enjoying myself though!

I have a novel planned for NaNoWriMo (because I totally have to start something new), which I'm really excited to start. I wrote a character sketch the other night, and I'm very tempted to do another one instead of my reading! xd

Oh dear! Well they can't cut down my English hours, otherwise I really would be teaching myself!

It's good you have a novel waiting! *Jealous*
