AngryRobotsInc. I hope you find a good doctor and feel better soon. It's no fun being sick. sad

Btw, does anyone have any good suggestions on putting together a vegetarian diet? I need to know how much of what foods I need to eat every week to stay healthy.

Thanks.

I try to keep around a lot of fresh fruits and veggies. Fruit cups as well. I make a lot of stuff from scratch. If you're trying to stay away from mock meats, lots of beans, grains, and rice. Nuts are good too, but try to avoid the really fatty ones. Peanut butter is nice for quick sandwiches. If you're doing ovo-lacto vegetarian, that makes things a lot easier too.

If you're eating mock meats, I'd suggest trying Boca products first, if you can get them where you are. Boca seems to be a favorite of many vegetarians and vegans (myself include. I looooove their burgers). For veggie dogs, Morningstar's are good (but not vegan), and the types that come in a can as well. Don't cook them in water, though. Fry them in some olive oil. Pretty much any mock meat is going to need some added oil. I learned that the hard way, by trying to cook some veggie bacon that turned into bacon flavored cardboard.

Try to vary your diet, otherwise it can get pretty boring. Also, it's healthier to have a variety of things. If you can't find any good veggie products in your area, there's always the internet. I shop at Vegan Essentials, which is (obviously) a vegan web store. They have wide range of food products.

Also, the internet is a good place to find recipes. PETA (while made up of crazies) has a good recipe selection on their website, and Vegweb.com has a wide selection of recipies as well. Both of those are vegan (I eat a lot of vegan meals, even as a lacto-ovo vegetarian).
Thanks for the great info! biggrin I'll definately keep that in mind. I've never been able to eat eggs, so I was getting worried about getting the right kind and amount of protein. I really need to get a nutrition book for this. confused But so far it's going well. I've been shopping at all these really cool places with good fresh humus, pesto and seeds. Yum! I've also discovered the beauty of the well-made salad.

Nuri: That's what mostly turned me to veggiefoodhood. It was the fact that I got bored of eating as much meat as I did coupled with the growing tastiness of veggie food I ate. It's not the moral thing at all - I just got sick of meat.

I also celebrated the day before I turned by having a sexy, 30-sec-a-side sirloin steak. Soooo good...

But now to my humus and pesto! Hurrah! xd

So long as you're eating a variety of protein sources, you'll generally be okay. Most people get far too much protein to begin with. A nutrition book is always helpful, especially if it's directed towards vegetarians (as then it would likely give you several veggie sources of protein).

I have to eat a lot of quick meals (toddlers will do that to you), and I've found a wonderful company that puts out frozen meals. The brand is Amy's, and their products are all organic. I looooove their frozen enchiladas. Black beans, vegetables, and tofu, wrapped in tortillas, in Mexican sauce. Mmmmmm.

mmmm, Amy's is good.

So, I think I will attempt another try at meatless meat products. We'll see if tofu and soy will agree with me.

I've never been a fan of fake meat. It always just tastes like cornstarch... Though I may give some of these brands a try.

What are some really good sources of protein? I don't eat eggs, so I'd have to get them from nuts and stuff. Is there anything else?

Thanks for all this great advice! biggrin

Nuri... I don't suppose we could set up a recipe exchange forum, eh? ninja

Soy is a great source, but don't go overboard on it. Also, look up some advice on how to cook tofu (if you want to try it), because it can be a little tricky to get tofu to work for you.

Beans and nuts are another good source. Grains and rice (brown rice, in particular) can be good as well. If you're getting something that comes with a nutritional label, check there. It'll tell you how much protein is in each serving of that product.

As for mock meats, some people like them, some people don't. For other people, some brands are good, others are not. I prefer Boca and Gardenburger for some stuff, and Morningstar for some other stuff.

I'd say to give a few a try, and if they're not for you, that's all there is to it.

Maybe not a forum, but a topic is perfectly fine. This is, after all, a fellowship community as well as informative one.

Yay! Another year for Wing! Yay!

Re: veg diet, rice and beans consumed together can be formed into a protein by your body; I would recommend several daily servings (authentic South American cuisine has a lot of recipes, or you can just have them as sides) to beef up (hee) your protein intake.

Oooh! You know, I used to eat beans on rice practically instinctively for breakfast for many years when my diet was really bad. Thanks for the tip! I thought my dad was just being silly when he said there was something special about the two together...

I went to a really loud party last night where I only knew two people. Oddly enough, I had a really good time! xd

I used to HATE beans. Disgusting things.

Now I'm starting to like them in things. Hopefully, it'll change even more.

Also: I cashed in my change bucket. 51.61! Woot! Event money!

Happy birthday, Wing. 3nodding

I went to the pagan club meeting again today.

-was instructed on how to find my totem animals and spirit guides by The President's Girlfriend by use of the Forest and/or Crystal Cave Meditations.
-one of the members has a phoenix for her totem animal or spirit guide (wasn't sure which) and affectionately calls it a Chinese pigeon.
-said member is apparently good at everything(tm).

I really hope something worth the sacrifice of my brain cells turns up soon. Preceding controversial terms are in quotes.

I did get to play with my friend's manga tarot deck, which I thought sounded ridiculous at first but is actually fascinating.
