used to mean so much
enveloping me in light
now i flinch at their touch

eyes that smile
radiating with a deep warmth
now hide an ulterior motive
and glint in ways that haunt

laughter ringing loud
echoing merrily through the halls
i know they hide the whispers
of strangers behind the walls

stride full of comfort
of confidence and ease
now every quaking step
causes my heart to squeeze
