A whisper of wind blew the fluffy hills of white powder off the branches of the bare trees in the small forest. The silence of the winter night was only disturbed by the small crackling of feet impacting the snow covered ground. The sky was still spouting flakes of pure white as the man walked the path he new, from walking it each year.
He had wished to arrive at the holidays this year. It seemed each year he was forced to push his trip, down the silent path and through the small forest, further from his dream of holidays and into the vast void of time between last Christmas and the next one. He had been trapped by the vast amount of souls who had family to see at such a wonderful time of year.
He pulled his coat tighter and braced against the gust of wind that blew, no longer whispering to him but shouting at a hostile tone. His gloved hands were brought to his mouth as he exhaled his warm breath on them to help fight the numbness in them. He continued his journey stopping only to open the worn out iron gate that he had never seen locked. His feet lead him as his mind wondered.
He passed the angel who stood high and reached for the sky as if it were calling souls back from heaven. His feet stopped as he reached his goal, the reason why he returned year after year to this place. A place he had never wished to come. It had been her idea to move to this place, in the middle of no where with no family to count on. They had came here with only the clothes on their backs and not even two-hundred dollars to live on.
A sad smile landed on his lips as he knelled in the snow and cleared the head stone of the icy white wall that blocked his view. He stared at the writing before reaching into his coat and pulling out the flowers he had brought. Fake of course, they lasted longer. He filled the small hole at the top of the marble plate and kissed his gloved hand placing it on the writing.
He was not done with his visit though as he moved slightly to clear off the second tombstone and treat it with the same amount of care and love. His eyes filled with tears as he stood and turned to make his way back to the world of the living. A lonely world.
