• "Hi! My name's Lacey! What's your name? Oooo, will you be my bestest friend?!"

I'm in 3rd grade, we're in recess, and a new girl had just come into the school. Already, I didn't like this girl, with her brown hair and her obnoxiously large eyes, outlined in something dark. I squinted at her.

"My name's Alex. . . What's that stuff around your eyes?"

Lacey pouted. "You didn't answer my question! Will you be my bestest friend? And it's eyeliner! My mommy did it for me! She's a proffeshinable!"

I sat for a while, trying to decided what to say. Something like, 'You're annoying, I hate you, go away,' or 'Leave me alone, I don't want to be friends with you.' was what I was looking for. Instead, a grin slid over my face as I said, "I'll call you Lace!" And even in my 8-year-old mind, I could feel the brutal mental slaps.

Lacey looked at me, confused. "Why Lace?"

I smiled wider, internally imagining my face ripping to shreds and exposing pure tendons and bone. I couldn't have told anyone why I was doing this to save my life. "Because! Bestest friends have to be able to call each other something no one else can!"

She frowned. "But my Daddy and Lukey call me Lace. I like Lynn better!"

"But Lynn isn't your name," I argued. Lacey shook her head.

"It's my middle name, silly! Rosalynn!! What's your middle name?"

I hesitated. "Charlotte," I said. "My middle name is Charlotte."

Lynn hugged me, squealing. "Let's go play jump rope, Char!"

    _________9 years later; Senior year___________

"I mean, it's so disrespectful! I just can't believe he would say something like that to me!"

I rolled my eyes up to the sky as Lynn and I walked home from school.

Apparently, Lynn had seen the guy she was currently 'in love with' with some over 'hoe bag', as Lynn had called her.

    Situation?

Lynn had been walking to class, like a good girl, and had heard the 'sleazy whore' and her precious Aiden's voices. She went snooping, and found Aiden pressed up against the wall with the 'toe sucking slut' all over him.

Long story short, Lynn had told the girl off. Lynn had very rudely told her off. And she had successfully pissed Aiden off in the process.

"Lynn, why do you go after him?" Why do I care? she deserves what's coming! "He's nothing but all looks and ego; his personality is two dimensional and bland," I stated bluntly.

"Sooo not true, Charlotte. He's sooo hot!"

    "I just said that."

Lynn continued chattering away, as if I hadn't even spoken. "He's got those absolutely gorgeous hazel green eyes, perfect hair, and I bet he's got a 6 pack under that shirt of his. . . Mmmm, Yummy!"

I retained a gag, glaring at the road.

'Why do I deal with this?' I thought, groaning inwardly. 'I hate her effing guts!'

"Lynn, you're not helping your point. So he looks good; He's got no personality what-so-ever!"

She stopped dead, staring at me stupidly with her mouth hanging open and her dyed blonde hair blowing over her shoulders as she turned to face me. She lowered her sunglasses to peer at me with her dark green eyes, one hand now on her hip with the other holding her sunglasses over her shoulder.

"You so did not just say that."

I shrugged at her and kept walking.

"Oh. My. God. Alex, what the hell?! He's got the best personality, like, ever! How could you say that?!"

I rolled my eyes for what felt like the millionth time, letting out a nearly inaudible, frustrated growl as I stopped walking and turned to face Lynn. She hadn't moved.

"Uhm, yeah, Lacey, I so did just say that."

She gaped at me, disbelieving, and my mind quickly compared her to an anglar fish with larger eyes, nicer skin, and better teeth.

"I'll say it again, too," I said. "He's got no per-"

"He does too have a personality!" Lynn interrupted. "He's sweet, he's got that whole bad-a** vibe going for him, and-"

"Lynn, open your eyes. Have you even noticed how he acts towards a girl once she gives him what he wants? She doesn't exist anymore; not to him, not to the whole school, hell, probably not the the whole world. He's only sweet when he want's in her pants, and hiw whole bad-a** vibe is a fluke. Besides; weren't you just complaining about him?"

Lynn pushed her sunglasses back on and huffed, walking towards me.

"Yeah, yeah," She grumbled. "Minor details. But he's still hot. Wait till he gets a piece of this bod, he won't treat me like that."

A black F-150 Ford pulled up on the road and I heard Atreyu blasting through the speakers as the driver rolled down the window. The music quietened, and Lucas, Lynn's brother, spoke.

"Hey, pretty lady, want a ride?"

Lynn glared before putting on a sweet smile. "Hey, Luke, is your d**k big enough for you to go ******** yourself?"

Luke grinned, looking past her right at me. "Doesn't matter, Lace, I was talking to Alex, not you."

"How rude!" Lynn pouted, opening the passenger door, tossing her bag into the backseat before sliding in. "Coming, Char?"

I coughed, hiding a smile, and opened the back door of the truck, tossing my stuff in beside Lynn's. However, before I could get in, Luke spoke again.

"Uhm, no, Alex. You sit up here. Lace, move to the back. I have to live with your whiney a**; I don't want to have to see you any more than I do already."

"Shut the hell up," Lynn growled, moving. "You think you're so cool now that you've turned 18. Ew, is that a cigarette?"

"Sure is," he replied, taking a drag and blowing smoke into the back, towards Lynn. She slapped him.

"You're lucky I don't have asthma, you jerk. I don't want to sit near you anymore, anyways."

I shut the passenger door and buckled my seatbelt as Luke drove towards his and Lynn's house.

I turned the radio back up, Atreyu having turned to Three Days Grace. I glanced in the side mirror to catch a glimpse of Lynn's disapproving look at the music as she pulled out her iPod and bright blue ear buds.

Leaning one elbow against the door rest and the other on the seat arm rest, I rested my cheek on my hand and stared at Luke.

Luke, with his perfectly straightened hair, his beautiful green eyes which looked so much more dull on Lynn. Luke and his perfectly tanned skin, his muscular and tall frame, his white straight teeth, his perfect lips, with the small loop from his piercing. . . Which were in the process of moving while his gorgeous, deep green eyes gazed at me.

"I'm sorry, what?" I asked dumbly.

"I said, 'How are you.' I really hope my sisters STUPIDITY isn't rubbing off on you,"he said, smiling. He shouted 'stupidity' loudly while looking back at Lynn. She gave him the finger and turned back to her iPod.

I laughed. "I'm good. A little sick of hearing about Lynn's guy of the month, but good. How about yourself?" Luke flashed a smile at me and I felt a light blush blossom across my cheeks.

'Stupid, stupid, stupid. You're getting to be just as effing stupid as Lynn. He doesn't like you, Alex. Stop trying.'

    "I'm good," he said.

The rest of the rideto Lynn and Luke's was quiet, with the exception of music and Luke and I softly singing along.

Upon arriving, Lynn hustled up to her room, me following behind only to get caught in the tornado of her rushing back down the stairs as I was in the process of climbing up.

"Luke I know it's your week to have the car but can Char and I please please please please PLEASE borrow it we need to go to the mall I need new clothes! Please!"

    'Take a breath, woman, Geez!'

"Would this have anything to do with Aiden being there today, too?" Luke inquired, dangling the keyus to his Ford in front of her face. Lynn snatched the keys, glaring, and headed back upstairs to, I assumed, change into a more revealing outfit.

"Alex and I will be in the car!" Luke shouted.

I looked at him. "Why are you coming?"

He smiled at me, ruffling my straight red hair, making my heart and stomach swoon as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of the door with him.

"You honestly thing I would leave you, the only decent friend my sister has, with said sister, stalking a guy she's in lust with, without any company?"

I laughed lightly, the slight disappointment hidden by the humor in his voice. 'I'm just a decent friend.'

"Well, I kind of expected you to, but thanks anyways."

    ________________________________________

I was so glad it was Friday it wasn't even funny. It was now midnight, and Lynn had finally managed to persuade Aiden to ditch his girlfriend of the night to hang out with her, Luke and myself. We were currecntly at the movie theatre to see Remember Me.

I had my head on Luke's shoulder, trying not to cry from the movie and/or pass out from sheer exhaustion. Lynn was having a hot and heavy make out session with Aiden right next to me.

I yawned and stood, stretching and getting ready to leave as the theatre as the credits came on.

"Hey guys," Lynn slurred, panting. She wasn't drunk, but I would have felt better if she was. Hey eyeliner and shadow was smeared, her lip gloss rubbed down her chin and across her cheeks. She had a ginormous hickey right under her chin, on the right side of her neck.

Correction; it looked like the whole side of her neck was black as soot, and I couldn't see the other side. She looked like a cheap whore out of a whore house, with her messed up makeup and hair, her denim miniskirt and semi-see through shirt ruffled, her four-inch heels adding to the playboy bunny image.

"Aiden and I are gonna stay for credits. You guys can go on ahead, I'll catch a ride home with Aiden," she continued, rubbing her fingers down his chest and stomach, to his thigh, and squeezed.

I let out a disgusted sound, muttering a comment under my breath, turned on my heel, and walked out, Luke behind me calling out my name softly.

"Uhg!" I yelled, frustrated, as I slammed the remaining popcorn into the trashcan, my half empty drink following.

    "Ale-"

"I get dragged throughout the whole damn mall, when I didn't even want to go, to stalk the guy she wants to see! I'm forced to pay for her slutty outfit AND pay for both her's AND her ******** boyfriends' tickets to see the movie, and she repays me by sitting next to me, completely ignoring the movie she suggested we all see to make out with Aiden and get his spit and c** all over the outfit she made me pay for!I bet she's going to use the 5 dollars I gave her for seran wrap and a ******** rubber band because she's too damn CHEAP for condoms!"

I stormed out of the building into the cool September night air, tears brimming over my eyes.

I was sick of this. It always happened, and I hadn't liked her since the first day I met her. The fact that I was so completely wiped out and that Luke had been rubbing soothing circles onto my back and on the palm of my hand during the movie didn't help my confusion and frustration.

"Alex. . ." Lucas started, touching my upper arm from behind me. I yanked away sharply and walked to his truck. Once we were settled inside cabin, he tried again.

    "Alex, I-"

"Just take me home, Lucas. Please, I'm tired, and I want to go home."

Luke, clamping his mouth shut, nodded once, turned the radio on, and drove away.
