(This account is in loving memory of one of my pet rats)

Virginia had silky smooth, beautiful fur.
She loved building nests out of Kleenex and paper towels.
Virginia was always shy. She had a nervous energy.
She was a very smart little rat.
She loved training sessions.
She was ambitious enough to aspire to alpha rat status...
but she always ended up as beta instead.
Virginia was always on the move,
often causing mischief.
Virginia's favorite game was to be chased.
Virginia's favorite food was peas.
She loved Cherry Garcia ice cream!

Virginia was almost 1 year, 11 months old when she died.
Early on in her illness, Virginia's life was saved by Amoxicillin. Her friends have continued to benefit from the drug. Veterinarians are trained not to use it on rodents because it is instantly fatal to guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits. However, rats are similar enough to us humans that they typically do NOT have problems with it. If you have rats who are battling a respiratory disease and you've already tried everything else, please remember that amoxicillin is an option! Ask your vet to try. It's even safe (and effective!) to use in combination with Baytril! Virginia was the very first case ever that my exotics vet had ever tried it on, and I'm so glad we took the risk. It gave her an extra 6 months of life!
