Mezask has taken up residence in her den and her clutch will be laid any day now. Given how early the green took to making her den and the size of her, it looked like she will clutch very well. A roundness to some of her packsisters indicate that there may be a few extra eggs in there too. The Whermaster has been carefully assessing all those that come forward for a chance to bond to Mezask’s clutch. The list is short, and each candidate is expected to have a clear reason for why they want to bond to a wher. Bonding a wher isn’t like bonding a dragon. It can be difficult; it can go wrong. A poorly bonded wher can go feral, a poor trained wher can get people killed. The Whermaster has put clear rules in place for all applicants, but they will accept applicants from any walk of life.

All the wherlets will be part of the same class regardless of their intended purpose. The clutch will be raised with assistance from the pack, staying with them for at least a turn. The class will live within the wher barracks with the pack. The Weyr intends for all female whers of the clutch to remain within the Weyr, but males will have to leave the Weyr once they come of age and they can no longer live with the females. This is generally between 12 and 18 months depending on their personality.

The Whermaster is allowing two methods of impression to potential candidates, candidates may only attempt one method. They may either approach the clutchmother and try to get an egg from her, or they may impress within the wherden after the eggs have hatched. Bonding to a wher is not instantaneous and can take a month or two. For this period candidates may spend as much or as little time within the den as they desire, interacting with any of the pups. ICly a wher has bonded when their name is clearly that of a present candidate. OOCly a candidate has impressed when they receive a wher profile.

Method 1 – Egg Request - Available until 09th May
Considered to be the traditional way of bonding a wher, but rarely the preferred method. Candidates seeking this method will approach the clutchmother and attempt to gain her approval approximately two sevendays after the clutch is laid. If the clutchmother does approve the candidate will be allowed to interact with the clutch. The clutchmother can rescind her approval at any time. This is usually if a candidate has upset any of her eggs, or she does not believe they are compatible with any of them.

Should a candidate successfully select an egg and be allowed to leave this is the only egg they will be eligible to impress. Impression is not guaranteed, and the bond will still have to be made. This will need to be done through a series of solo posts and private roleplays with the wherlet. If there is not attempt, or a poor attempt, at bonding with the wher it risks going feral. If this is noticed soon enough the Whermaster may remove the wherlet and place it back with the pack in hopes it bonds to another candidate. If too long has passed at the window for bonding has been missed, then the pup will have to be euthanised before it becomes large enough to be a threat. It is likely that another that causes this to happen will have a very hard time finding a wher egg in the future.

Choosing an egg means that the candidate will only have the chance to bond to the wher from that egg. That means that regardless of their plans for the egg, the colour and personality is already determined. The wherlet will rejoin their clutch class at around one month old once the bond is secure. Then they will continue through wherlinghood as any other pup would.

Method 2 – Clutch Bonding - Available until 07th June
This method is generally considered the more favourable among those that consider wherhandling to be a profession. These candidates become temporary members of the pack. They begin to spend time in the wherden after any eggs that are going to be have been removed from the clutch. Usually this is around two sevendays after clutching, when the eggs are thought to have a sevenday left before they hatch. Although all candidates will be introduced and familiar to the pack before entering the wherden, they are encouraged to try and gain the packs favour by being polite and assisting the clutchmother when desired. This doesn’t increase their chances of bonding, but it makes things run smoother for all involved, and reduces the risk of the pack chasing out candidates.

Candidates are free to come and go as they please from the wherden once they are allowed entrance. There are however two limitations to this. Firstly, entering and exiting during daylight hours is not advised as this risks letting light into the den and harming the eyes of the whers. Secondly if a candidate spends too little time in the wherden then the pack may become more wary of them, potentially leading the clutchmother to not want them to return.

All candidates are expected to be present at the clutch hatching. Once the eggs become active a supply of minced meat will be available for when the time comes. When the clutch hatches wherlets may be fed by any candidate or by a member of the pack. Unlike firelizards this doesn’t form a bond instantly, and many whers have gone on to make strong bonds with those that weren’t the first to feed them.

Over the next month the candidates will be allowed to interact freely with the pups within the den. Wherlets are born without teeth and not very mobile. They will need to be fed and cleaned regularly. In the wild this job would be carried out by the pack, but candidates are encouraged to carry out these tasks to form a bond. Personalities will emerge shortly after hatching and candidates should make note of the temperament of wherlets and what they intend to use their bonded wher for. As wherlets have extremely sensitive eyes the den is kept in total darkness for the first two months. Candidates adjust to this to some degree, but for the majority they will have to find their way within the den relying on other senses and familiarity. This also means that the subject of wher colour is purely conjecture until the wherlets can leave the den after their bonds have been made.

Candidate Sign-Up Form
Forms can be submitted up to the clutch hatching. They can be edited up until a bond is made.
The Whermaster has the right to reject any candidate they feel does not take bonding to a wher seriously or is not ready for the responsibility. All candidates will need to know what they plan to train the wher to do and have some awareness of how to do it.

The den was quiet as dawn began to rise over the Weyr. It had been a long night for the wherpack, but now things were settling back down into peace once more. It was never truly silent in the wherden. The breathing of several whers filling the small cavern. Mezask curled protectively around her clutch, her packsisters curled up with her. It was hard to pick the eggs out of all the varied green shades that kept them safe. The den was too small for the entire pack to sleep in by day, but today the cavern was at maximum capacity. This was an important day for the pack, a new clutch had been laid, they needed to protect it with everything and every body they could. Even those that couldn’t squeeze into the cavern had chosen resting places nearby, dark alcoves, where they could be called upon if need be.

Her sisters began drifting off to sleep as the sun climbed higher, while Mezask lay and inspected her clutch. Nine eggs. They had more now than many wherpacks could hope to have in two clutches, or even three. They weren’t all Mezask’s biologically. A few were the results of her packsisters’ runs. Still the matriarch of Fort Weyr’s pack felt no difference between those and the eggs she had laid herself. They were all the eggs of her pack. All her eggs to protect. It had only been a few candlemarks, but she loved each of them dearly.

Their time together would be short. Two sevendays and candidates would enter her cavern, hoping to bond with them. Three, and they would all hatch. Pudgy and hungry. Two months from now and their bonds would be made. Three months and they would be leaving the den. Soon a short turn would have passed, and they would be grown, some leaving to find new homes of their own. The thought made Mezask rather sad, that their time should be so brief. She hoped some of her daughters would stay and join the pack, so that at least she would not lose them all. The green curled even tighter around the eggs. Still, that time was a long way off.

Which method of bonding will your character be attempting? clutch bonding

Mauling? if it happens, it happens, she loves her work as a healer though so anything to stop her being able to work would mean reworking her future XD

Sum up your character's personality as you see them. She's dedicated to her work but her mentor has a wher, she wants to follow in his footsteps. She struggles a little bit in sudden stressful situations but her training will take over and she can keep an outwardly level head. She tends to overwork herself as she doesn't like to take many breaks though.

What is your character’s occupation? Journeyman Healer
What role will a wher have in this occupation? Trying to diagnose the more mystery ailments, with training, things that don't have much outward explanation. (earth terms would be comparing this, with dogs that can detect cancers, or pick up on diabetes etc)

Why does your character want to bond to a wher? While she's not a 'follower' type, the person she trusts most in the world, her mentor, the man who trainer her to be a healer in the first place, has one. He's very much more of a father figure to her than her own parents. and she wants to be more like him as she very much respects him and his work.
Why do you want the character to bond to a wher? Honestly? I just think it would be a great idea for her to grow, whether in her craft at the wher or forcing her to get out into the larger world, depending on Wher colour IF she gets a bond.

What plans do you have for your character's development and future? This may depend on what colour wher she potentially bonds to. Should she bond to a female, she'll stay on at the wher, training under Weyrhealer Bereck and his own ideas on Whers helping identify plants etc, but she plans to expand on this after she witnessed a wher's behaviour change around someone, who was later found suffering from a much worse issue (think low blood sugar etc)
How will bonding to a wher affect this? Again it depends on colour of wher in the long run, she can work with her own wher among the weyr, or if she has to leave then she can take that experiment out among people the wher doesn't know at all.

Wher Preferences
Colour preferences? While she would prefer green or gold, meaning she won't be forced to leave in time, she's open to any colour wher that decides she's worth bonding to.
Make this character exclusive? No

Personality preferences? She would need a calm wher that will listen, but is also approachable to other humans not bonded to them as it matters for her ideas in the long run.

Other: She also is attempting to train flits as calming therapy pets, starting with her own.

Are there any eggs you feel your character especially resonates with? At the moment she is trying not to have any preference for any eggs

Are there any eggs you feel your character is especially poorly suited for? I don't have any ideas lol.

Do you accept that if your character impresses a male wher they will have to leave the Weyr once that wher comes of age? Yes

Candidate Information
Candidate Name: Thasne
Age: 27

Which method of bonding will your character be attempting? Clutch Bonding

Mauling? Go for it.

Sum up your character's personality as you see them. Thasne is a dedicated and smart individual with self-worth issues. She wants to be noticed by people and people to know how good she is at her job. She's proud of her mining heritage and too stubborn to take up another job even though she might be better at it.

What is your character’s occupation? Journeywoman Miner
What role will a wher have in this occupation? Thasne intends to train this wher to assist in excavation and maintaining the mine safety.

Why does your character want to bond to a wher? Because it'll make her unique among the Journeymen back at her mine, which means people will acknowledge her.
Why do you want the character to bond to a wher? That's what I made her for.

What plans do you have for your character's development and future? She's going to aim for a male wher and then skedaddle. Most likely have a 'turns out the treasure was the friends we made along the way' moment or two in her time.
How will bonding to a wher affect this? The wher will go with her. It'll be interesting have her interact with people she isn't competing with.

Wher Preferences
Colour preferences? Nope, any male is good
Make this character exclusive? Yes.

Personality preferences? Thasne would probably do best with a practical wher, one that she can train to work underground in a dangerous mine and not worry that it's going to do something stupid. Rambunctious whers probably wouldn't work.

Other: Filling out forms to yourself is bizarre. Do not recommend.

Are there any eggs you feel your character especially resonates with? Not yet

Are there any eggs you feel your character is especially poorly suited for? Not yet

Do you accept that if your character impresses a male wher they will have to leave the Weyr once that wher comes of age? Yes
