Tordare was comforted by Turnves’ words. Any of these dragons. “They could be yours, too,” he said, offering his brother a slight smile. He didn’t want Turny to go home disappointed a second time!

Oh! One had stopped in front of them. She was staring. Why? “Hello,” he said. Maybe she belonged to Turny? What did the flashes of red mean? His attention was stolen by the carrot cake egg.

“Oh! Oh, look Turny. A brown! Do you think he’s yours?”

As the clutch's first bronze emerged D'lana smiled, and felt a little devious for doing so. There was really only one more egg that might be a gold, and that still a low chance. She knew she should be hoping for a gold but honestly, truly? She didn't want to go back to that, to stupid flights and foolish chance. Green firelizards could lay golden daughters, it was vanishingly rare but it could happen and so too she assumed green dragons could have gold daughters. She needed time before that happened though, time to set the world out as it ought to be.

Candidate Turanves

He was watching the eggs when something decidedly green blocked his view. Turan glanced down at the owner of the spread wings, one of the greens, as she came up to stare at him and his brother. Was she here for Tordare? He looked over to his brother perplexed. "Is she yours?"

Unable to ignore the dragon right in front of him, he missed the next dragon hatching. Thankfully his brother didn't. Turan stretched up to look over the green hatching. A brown hatched? He peered closer from between the green's wings, and took in a startled breath.

"Tordare..... I think.... I think that's a bronze." Yes any of the greens and blues could be his, he supposed. But Turan was determined to have only the best. To the green he nodded politely, "excuse me, if you don't mind, could you move a little? If we're in your way to your rider, we'd be happy to step aside for you."

V'ine and Green Ohuth 4

"Mmmmm," she made a noise in the back of her throat to S'var. Already six eggs hatched and equal number of greens and blues. V'ine hoped Fort Weyr was happy with them. From what she'd heard they were hoping for a large number of greens. "I wonder what they'll do if there's a queen in there." Would they give up on the plan of breeding greens? Or have both gold and some breeding greens? Assuming she survived.

"Poor kids," she murmured with sympathy. Hopefully none passed out. "Ah, there's a handsome fellow." She nodded as the first bronze broke his shell then stopped to tidy himself from his eggshell.

Dimeti gave a nod to S'vars comments. Greens would be helpful... actually, anything would be helpful. The north was in a sorryer state than he'd thought they were! They could use all the help they could get! Well... It was CERTAINLY a good thing they'd all decided to come, seeing what they were dealing with! "Green may be a good sign, but golds would produce larger clutches." He wanted to remind them, too, that any breeding greens would be out of the flaming game, which, with all of them... that was a pretty weak game they'd be playing when thread hit. He wondered if it was even possible to- AH! A brown! Even better sign than a green. Hope for larger dragons still lingered, yet.He wasn't worried about the candidates. The dragons would find who they belonged to one way or another. Even if they needed help to get there, his Giligelith was proof they would figure something out.

C'ran had finally walked over in time to hear J'hm's commentary about the dragonets' temperament and smiled, nodding. "Spirit's good for a soul. Helps ya live longer, I heard." He glanced over at S'var before turning to the sands again. "Green, brown, silver... as long as they're healthy, I don't mind the color." ~'Course Tefelath's the best of them all.~ ~Well, don't you just know what's what!~ he heard back. He knew the sarcasm wasn't supposed to be there, she was being honest. And-... There went his OTHER seat to V'ine. Did his girl not want him near her today? He shook that thought off as she answered his question, and others voiced similar information for him, then moved to the bench behind her and burrowed his way into the spot Dimeti had occupied moments before, sliding him down the bleachers a few inches so he could sit behind Leiya and settle a hand on her shoulder.

Then they were joined by K'ndayo! He waved them over and patted the bench next to him to help solidify his place where Dimeti had been. "You look a little white in the hide there, K'ndayo. Ya okay?" While he was interested in the sandings-on, his attention was to his friends at the moment. Still, he did pay attention as more hide-bound little bodies made their presences known. He also, promptly, ignored Dimeti's questioning glare; after all, it wasn't a jab at white dragons, K'ndayo actually did look pale.

Bronzerider Careese

Careese sighed as she wiped her brow, finally done with her rides. Everyone who'd been on her roster had arrived, and the chill of betweening a couple times would keep them from feeling the heat for a few minutes, she hoped. With Toplamath now tuckered out, but panting happily, she sent him to the rafters to watch with the others and climbed those stairs to join everyone else watching. She hung close to the stairs, so she wouldn't walk across anyone's purview, and seemed quite pleased there. She'd be feeling the heat herself, but for now, her finger danced in the air. "Green, green, green, blue, blue, blue, brow-er, bronze?" She decided she'd have to wait 'till the hatchling was dry to be sure. "And two impressed. Nice!" She'd only barely missed those, and, she reckoned, around the same time, because only now was one of the field 'master's walking over to claim them.

Holdbrat Cartoun and Lorekeeper Syneca

Excitement was everywhere! From the stands to the sands, this was all anyone could think of. Cartoun was excited, though. So many 'small' dragons on the sands, so far. He could ride all of- well... Almost all of that. His brain recalculated that brown and he wondered about the blues... That might be too high off the floor for him. He knitted his brow briefly, then cleared his throat and shook off the thoughts. Well, they were pretty to look at, anyways. And, he could dream!

'The dragonet is as colorful as its egg was!' Syneca wrote, eyes flipping between her little journal and the sands. She wrote about the sprinkly pattern across its hide and how it almost seemed to glitter like pond water in the sun. And briefly, her mouth watered at the idea of taking a dip. This heat was cloying even up here. She recorded each of the dragons with similar descriptions, and then the whirling eyes of the Impressed. "That must be beautiful to experience." she murmured, trying to remember if she'd ever seen records of dragon rider's emotions at the time of impression.

Candidate Tollar

Tollar turned towards Zirza as she questioned his gaze. Had he looked at her? Hm, oops. His scorn was meant for the infighters. He tilted his head gently, probably the most apologetic he'd get outside of his words. "Oh, no, I completely agree. Hot as dragon-fire." he murmured. His job had often put him in temperatures in the other extreme, Even Benden had rarely gotten so warm, only in the worst of heat waves. His eyes had returned to the dragons, though. Zirza could be interesting another day; today there were dragons.

As if in some cosmic retribution for her dismissal, someone collided with Tollar's shoulder in an attempt to flee the angst Tellaera was causing, which Shahaeran wasn't helping no matter what she thought, and he stumbled out from the crowd he'd already been standing on the edge of, staring over at Sonulobai. He didn't bother saying anything; it didn't need to be said. He did, however, watch Cochito's movements towards the group curiously. The blue seemed interested in a pair, in particular, and Tollar was curious if there would be rainbows.

And it... Actually rather turned out there would. Just not from the blue he was staring at. He heard the words echo in his mind and his eyes followed them to the vibrant confetti green, who may as well have been the only thing in the world. ~You don't have to be grumpy! Let's go an do EVERYTHING together!~ Tollar's reaction was one of the more quiet ones. "Grumpy? Who's grumpy?" he muttered back. The only thing for miles, so far as Tollar was concerned, was the happy ball of energy bounding through the sand towards him. How could anyone be grumpy with so many colors in the world?

Tollar, so enthralled with his new charge, hardly noticed another of the dragons, blue Cochito, impressing elsewhere, or three more hatchlings. In the fog of his mind, it was probably a wonder he heard his new Weyrlingmaster at all while he had just been hugging his dragon (HIS Dragon!) in place... and rathermuch in the way. That... might actually have even been his little bundle of sprinkles pointing that out, too, as the pair started off. Pauth was hungry, and Tollar suspected if he didn't fix that, he wouldn't stop suffering a hunger of his own!

Candidate Shahaeran

Shah wasn't playing for long. The argument was broken up just by her initial mental malfunction, and seemed nearly forgotten when her flute started. She wasn't going to play long, either. She'd probably already get yelled at. But, she smiled happily at them all as she finished her little concert. "Yup! There I went!" she cooed at Telleara, then nodded towards the dragons. "And here they come. Better to pay attention and think about happy things than pick at each other, right?" Speaking of, she turned in time to see Sonulobai being toyed with by the blue dragonet just before his impression. She'd almost completely overlooked Tollar's success, but he wasn't a hard ball of quiet happiness to miss, his little green clearly wanting to bounce around more than their quiet embrace allowed. She didn't have a good retort for Kakaw's suggestion. She didn't figure she'd need one, as she pushed herself between the boys and the snarky challenge to their confidence levels. "Yeah, I'll probably hear it from someone when this is over." She smiled at them anyways. "Thanks for the looking out for me, though!"

So, two impressed... how many on the field now? Her count got mixed up by legs and wings three times before she gave up at 27, certain there weren't quite that many eggs broken. And more hatching every couple minutes! But for now, it seemed one of the remaining ones was finally interested in the candidates! A regal green stood nearby, considering two of the boys! Would there be yet more rainbows, which Shah would get to see this time? She always loved that part, and she wondered if that had been something her brother had loved.

Candidate Zirza

Zirza couldn't decide whether Tollar's dismissal was more infuriating or calming. On one hand, he hadn't disagreed with her, but on the other... he was so flippantly dismissive, when he had been the one to make a face at her for no reason at all! Oh, she would have loved to yell at him but instead she chose to scowl into space. As it was, she had been held back from Standing because of her fighting... she didn't want to be kicked out of candidacy now!

She watched the ever increasing number of hatchlings on the sands and started to calm, and even smiled when a young blue tried his hardest to play with someone, just to Impress to someone else. Would one of these babies choose her?

Then her attention was drawn back to Tollar when one of the greens came to him, eyes flashing rainbow. She couldn't help but huff, turning away until he was away from the Hatching. It was always the most annoying ones that got all the good stuff!

Things were progressing well, but Lemon Drizzle still had work to do. Padding into the clutch he approached Bakewell Tart, which had been mostly still since the beginning. Resting his forehead against the egg, the blue hummed. Come on Bakewell Tart, time to get up. Almost as thought to protest, white and pink egg slowly tipped backwards, away from their sibling, leaving the blue looking a little disappointed.

The blue's attention was momentarily grabbed as Wooden Spoon gave a loud crack. A large crack zig-zagged down the shell, before it neatly split apart. A striped green uncurled and looked around at the gathered dragons and humans. Blinking once, she picked herself up and walked away from her siblings. What exactly was on the green's mind was largely a mystery, her slowly whirling eyes not giving much away as she approached the candidates. Not wasting any time at all the young dragon's eyes bloomed into rainbows, finding her rider swiftly and shepherding them away. Whispers began to work through the crowd of candidates, then making their way up into the stands. Chiwoth, that was her name. (NPC Impression)

Remaining on the sands, Lemon Drizzle was still trying to wake their frankly unhelpful sibling. Each time he pursued the egg, it was shift or wriggle away from him. As their sister had made her entrance and found the person she wanted, Bakewell Tart had refused to get up. The blue was patient though, sitting down he shifted himself around so his back to the egg. He began to rhythmically, though not harshly, thump his tail against the egg. A satisfied hum escaped the blue when the egg gave a far more energetic lurch, cracks beginning to form along the pale surface. A few more steady and disruptive thumps and the shell gave way, revealing a still curled up brown lying in the remains. Slowly one eye opened to regard Lemon Drizzle, before the brown gave a mighty yawn and rolled over, turning away from his brother. Leaving the blue blinking and almost pouting at the pale back.

Some way away Sticky Toffee Pudding had managed to get herself to her feet. Her mess dripping heavily onto the sand as she looked at the candidates. Letting out a high trill, the green began to eagerly pad towards the white clad hopefuls. Hello there! It was nice to see all of you. She was new here. The green peeped and tilted her head to the side. She didn't suppose anyone would be kind enough to show her around. It was all frightfully overwhelming. She looked around at the gathered faces. Her sister seemed to have already laid claim to the attention to two of them, so she wouldn't look there. Sticky Toffee Pudding heard a huff nearby and turned her whirling blue gaze to Zirza. Maybe you'd be willing to help? You seemed to know how things worked around here, Sticky Toffee could use someone like that to help them.

Candidate Telleara

Telleara grinned as one brother pulled the other away. Lifting her hand she bent her fingers in a wave, and even that gesture seemed to be mocking them. Kakaw could say she wasn't worth it, but it was obvious she'd gotten under both boys skin and really that was all she wanted.

Of course then there was this newest arrival. Unlike the twins, there wasn't much point trying to get a rise out of her. Tellara wasn't sure whether she was too stupid to understand or just oblivious to what was going on around her. Whatever it was, it made her rather boring. It seemed today would be no exception. The girl just stood there with her dopey smile and the whole 'dragons can feel you' spiel they'd all heard before. Honestly, if all candidates were going to be like this she wondered how she was going to survive the next several turns in their company. At least the twins were interesting to needle.

Now though she imagined it wouldn't be so interesting. If only because she'd have to listen to more flute music at some point she was sure. She'd seen hatchlings squabble and no doubt little miss musician would decide to stop that with another unrequested performance. Maybe there would be more entertainment to be found elsewhere, for now Shahaeran was welcome to apparently try and get between the twins in her own way. Maybe she was into that kind of thing and that was what all this was about. Actually, Telleara could do without that mental image. Her expression having shifted towards bored she walked away from the trio to find somewhere else to stand, hopefully somewhere out of flute range.

J'hm of Blue Foreyath 4

J'hm watched the hatching progress with a small smile. More greens and blues hatched out and thankfully they all seemed to be healthy and strong in their own ways. Bonds were made and honestly he felt a tension release that the old man didn't even realise had been held in his bones. He'd always hoped they would all be strong, but reality was rarely kind. Yet with each egg that hatched another lively little soul joined their ranks. He let out a thoughtful 'hrm' when V'ine mentioned the candidates needing a drink. Hopefully the healers had taken that into consideration. S'var was right, it would be terrible. "I'm sure they wouldn't take the risk." Something had probably been set up to deal with it.

A little bronze hatched, and he seemed like a sweet fellow. The colour range wasn't really in doubt with this clutch. Julith had never had an abnormal clutch before. Idly he wondered if the hatching seemed uneventful to the candidates. Knowing roughly what was going to be coming out of the eggs. V'ine had him wondering again. "M'sure they'd find a way to make it work." Even if there was a gold, he doubted they'd give up the greens. One gold to repopulate the entire North in just over ten turns was a steep ask. Two more eggs hatched. The clutch's first brown and a green. "Well, she certainly didn't waste any time," the man said as the green led away her chosen. Looking back to the brown he chuckled as the dragon didn't seem like he wanted to get up yet. "Guess they can't all be lively after all."

Turanves' complete dismissal of her clearly didn't exactly thrill Chocolate Chip Cookie; her eyes flashed orange and she bared her teeth but then pulled up short, exhaled with a heavy snort, and turned her back on the pair. With both candidates summarily dismissed, just as she had been dismissed, she kicked a little sand in their direction and stalked on by through the ranks of candidates.

S'var 7

"I'm sure they will," S'var agreed with J'hm and V'ine, smiling slightly as a green hatched and then Impressed right away. "I expect they'll want the greens to keep clutching until they've rebuilt the population but after that who knows. As for the gold herself, I suppose she and her rider will take on the mantle of senior as soon as they graduate Weyrlinghood. Quite a burden." They would need a lot of help and guidance, but he was certain that W'dol and D'lana would provide that - and in the process steer the young pair in the direction they wanted. "If there is a gold in the clutch I think we'll see the greatest gather ever thrown on Pern."

C'ran's question to K'ndayo called S'var's attention to the young rider and he glanced around to regard him with concern - was the heat getting to him?
PostPosted: Fri Aug 16, 2019 4:30 pm
T'eir and Brown Gilwreyth - 3
K'ndayo and Blue Audrath - 3

To V'ine T'eir nodded. Even if the color disappointed them on some level, new riders would absolutely be smitten with their dragons. T'eir frowned a little a moment later. "Oh, I'm sure there are Healers there keeping an eye out for them at all times. We probably can't see them from here, that's all." He and S'var had answers for V'ine nearly simultaneously so he found himself nodding to the elder riders.

A Queen? Yes it was possible, but did he really think there was a Golden egg in there? He kept his mouth shut but grunted softly. Julith would have set that egg apart if it had been Gold. Right?

Meanwhile, K'ndayo smiled faintly to Greenrider C'ran. The concern was appreciated, certainly, but not necessary. "Yes, I am sorry to trouble you. I had a hectic morning, nothing more." And nothing like a hot Hatching Cavern to bring the color back to one's cheeks. Right? It would happen soon enough.

He looked down at the eggs and hatchlings fondly. Their ranks would now be maybe twice again as many as they had been up until now. It swelled the heart with pride. But he was not the sort for commentary. He merely watched, or nodded if he agreed with someone's observation. He enjoyed himself in his own quieter way.

"Right then." These buckets of meat are rather self explanatory. Hand feed your dragon and don't let them eat too much at once." Today I am here to make sure you have everything you need."

Candidate Sonulobai

He heard such a joyous trill that Sonulobai turned back to look at Cochith, who was returning to his side. He had honestly expected not to lock eyes with the dragon again, let alone converse with him. "Really? You promise?" Not that he expected Cochith to remember, but still, that little hope was there. "Thank you." He watched Cochith and Lorux go with some measure of envy, but wore a small smile on his face and feeling a little bit better about the future.

At what point had Sonulobai notice the exchange between the brothers and Chocolate Chip Cookie? She was the Green who had cried out defiantly to the world. But then she was dismissed by both and she left, kicking sand at them. He felt no sympathy at all for them, but for her, he still keenly felt what it was like. Don't worry little girl, you aren't alone, he thought, not even considering if she could hear him or not.

Candidate Chellemana

They watched keenly as the bronze Carrot Cake came into the world, and sat down to groom himself. Probably not the one for them. But if family tradition held, one like him would seek Chelle out. The trouble of it was, they weren't sure they would live up to that. Sister and brother both had Bronzes, but what if Chelle bonded with a chromatic dragon? Would that be a problem? Would they look down upon their sibling? They felt silly thinking such a thing, but the self-doubt still weighed on their mind.

A Brown hatched, with the help of his Blue brother. Bakewell Tart was not in a hurry to meet his intended, despite Lemon Drizzle's urging. A Brown would be fine with Chelle. Maybe not that one, though. He was too lazy. Or maybe he was just stubborn. They watched two Greens approach. One bonded right away, and the other stopped before Zirza, not with rainbow eyes, however. I still have many chances, Chelle reminded themself, if not today then soon, as the Green sisters had clutches coming their way. It helped to remember.

Candidate Turanves

The regal bronze was just his style if he so thought himself. Look at him being all tidy and cleaning the shell off. While he and his brother oogled the bronze, Wooden Spoon gave way with a loud crack to spill a striped green onto the sands. Not that Turan noticed as she moved among the candidates to find her rider. The bronze wasn't the only thing he did see though, just the most important. When Bakewell Tart was helpfully hatched by his blue brother and revealed himself to be a brown, Turan gave his brother a gentle nudge. "There's a brown."

He blinked as Chocolate Chip Cookie flashed her eyes orange and then bared her teeth at them. What had he done? Turan shrugged as she turned away and kicked sand at them. Well. Guess she wasn't for his brother. He brushed the hot sand off. It was almost a surprise she hadn't attacked like Power Green had. He just didn't get along with greens apparently.

V'ine pursed her lips thoughtfully at Dimeti's comment. "Aye, larger clutches but fewer. I think multiple breeding greens would out pace a gold or two with a little time." Would they? That would be an interesting experiment to run.

"Ah a bronze and a brown." She chuckled at their late and leisurely arrival. "Someone is taking their time getting out of bed." V'ine glanced toward S'var and nodded. "If they survive to graduate that is." That was the cold hard truth for this clutch. They all appeared healthy now. But what about tomorrow? In a week? In a month? Only time would tell.

After a few attempts Carrot Cake managed to remove the shell from his eyeridge, and with a satisfied hum he got to his feet and made his way towards the candidates. First he approached Telleara and gave her a thoughtful look for a moment but it seemed he wasn't to find what he sought with her, and so with an amiable bob of his head he padded onward until two very similar looking young men caught his attention, and with a curious warble he came to a halt before Kakar and Kakaw

Behind him Devil's Food was twitching again, but it was the more unobtrusive Lemon Meringue Pie who next broke shell. It was not a very dramatic hatching as such things went; the pale egg simply fell over, shifted, and then cracked apart as the hatchling pushed outward.

User Image

Blinking slightly yellowed eyes the pale blue disentangled his large wings from the remains of his shell and took a hesitant step forward. Was His here? He warbled uncertainly and looked around at the sea of faces, people were good but there were so many!

Candidate Zirza

The messy little green, Sticky Toffee Pudding, suddenly looked at Zirza, who looked back with confusion. Was she hers? What did the green need?

Hello! Can I help you? Zirza thought in her direction, wondering what was going on. At least she was plenty distracted from Tollar now. Um, I'm Zirza.

Kakaw nodded when the strange flute girl answered him, he shrugged too, welp, it was on her head if she got into trouble for it.

Kakar said nothing, focusing on the dragons, totally ignoring the other, horrible girl. He tried a half hearted smile in Shah's direction though, she seemed nice enough and agreed with him on the whole, focusing on the dragons thing, also appreciating her inserting herself between them, and that awful girl (who he secretly hoped didn't get a dragon)

They both watched in silence as another egg hatched, then promptly moved up into the stands to Impress. Both silently disappointed. Then the blue helped his brown brother to hatch, who then turned his back on the blue, they both let out a chuckle at the same time. They also totally dismissed the presence of the ugly minded girl now, something made much easier when Carrot Cake bronze made his way towards them.

"Hey there" both said at the same time, then, realising they might be confusing the poor thing, said it again, but separately, moving just a tiny bit away from each other to make it easier on the bronze, Faranth knows they knew they confused humans at times, let alone a newly hatched dragon, but both boys smiled down, both boys with hope in their hearts that he was either for them, or their twin, neither sure which they wanted more.

This was perfect, more perfect than he'd ever imagined it could be and he'd thought it was going to be pretty amazing! Cochith was prancing along at his side, radiating good cheer and curiosity about the new world he'd found himself in - that and hunger of course.

"Thanks Weyrlingmaster." Lorux beamed at R'ulfr as he crouched down to grab one of the buckets and passed the first chunk to Cochith, who gulped it down eagerly with his eyes whirling brilliant blues and greens.

Pauth, come and try this! he exclaimed to his energetic sister as he pawed at Lorux's leg for another piece. This is amazing!

"Yep, pretty much," Lorux agreed, not meaning the meat as he turned his stupid big grin onto Tollar. "How're you feeling? I feel shaffing brilliant!"
