Over two thirds of the clutch had hatched, and all the remaining eggs showed signs of movement in one way or another. Some were giving dramatic jolts like Cheese and Wine, while others gave more gentle rocks. Apple Pie gave another shudder of activity, even as a crack laced down the surface of Baking Tray. Yet it was Shortbread that was next in line. The young dragon slowly pushing the surface of the shell outward, hatching without much sound to herald her presence. The green clambered slowly out of her egg and gave a pleasant croon too those around her. The newly hatched dragon was met by Lemon Drizzle. Any remaining signs of irritation leaving the blue's gaze as his sister nuzzled her face against him. It wasn't all that bad, surely?

Honestly it had all been very distressing and Sticky Toffee Pudding hadn't much liked that commotion at all. The relief was palpable when her green sister impressed and was led away by her rider. The tension visibly left the bright green as she unwound. Looking to her companion the green nudged at the candidate's arm. It was alright now. She could look. Crisis averted after all.

With everything resolved Sticky Toffee Pudding had expected to feel happy. Instead she felt conflicted? This was a confusing feeling. She wasn't sure she understood it at all, and was far more sure she didn't like it. The green shook her head to dispel the feeling. Where had it come from anyway? It felt weird, like it was coming in from somewhere else. Somewhere that she wanted more of. Like a tantalising smell. Slowly the young dragon rose to her feet, tilting her head from side to side as though that would somehow help her hone in on whatever it was. It felt different. Like there was something under the conflict. That was what she wanted, not the feeling, but whatever was past the feeling.

It wasn't even conscious thought that started the green's feet moving. Whatever it was, it pulled her. Pulled her away from Zirza's side, through candidates, past the antics of her siblings, and right to the feet of Joisann. The green looked up, and the moment her eyes rested on the young woman's face they exploded into colour. Joisann! There you are! Pushing forward the green happily pushing against the tanner, now dragonrider. There's certainly been a lot going on hasn't there? Not all of it good, but things seem to have worked out. A girl kept me company. Briefly a vision of another candidate flashed up for Joisann to see. But I've found you now! Newbuth and Joisann, I think that sounds perfect, don't you?

Eight hatchlings were left on the sands. Brownie and Blondie continued their game of getting under candidate's feet. Paying absolutely no mind to Sonulobai hitting the ground. Or any other candidate that did for that matter. It didn't mean much of anything to them. Their adventure led them out of the crowd and crossing the path of Red Velvet. The blue naturally puffed up his chest as he continued to strut along the line of candidates (Although he didn't seem that intent on actually looking at them). Brownie, being quiet a bit smaller and slinkier than the other dragon quickly fell into step behind his brother. Seeming to mock the larger blue. Holding his snout high in the air, and taking overly exaggerated steps. Meanwhile Blondie couldn't seem to decide whether she wanted to roll in the sand and make that strange giggling sound again, or dramatically fall over, in some kind of comedic parody of a swoon. So doing both would have to do.

A glimpse of Blueberry Muffin could be seen, should anyone care to look for her, the green still cowering among her unhatched siblings and trying her best not to be seen. Her shield was further lessened when Bread Pudding egg shifted and seemed to just gently crumble in on itself. The green that had been left in the remains let out a slightly surprised peep, twisting her neck to look around at where her shell had gone. Climbing daintily to her feet the dragon made short work of scraping all the shell fragments together into a little sandy pile. There, that was at least a little better. Looking up another surprised peep escaped Bread Pudding. Oh, she hadn't seen you there, dreadfully sorry. With swift steps the green made her way towards the candidates. It wouldn't do to keep them waiting after all.

S'var 16

"Ha, and two more!" S'var leaned forward as the pair cracked their shells, looked at the remaining eggs, frowned slightly, and then huffed out a breath and gave a crooked smile. "Seven eggs left, and five now, I must have miscounted.... Here's hoping for another two greens at least, and perhaps even a gold." It wasn't likely but it was possible, and their whole mission here had been an unlikely hope so why not hold onto that? Anyway even if it was a bronze that would be welcome, or brown come to that.

Candidates Joisann and Sonulobai

Nearby, a fellow Candidate had gone down in a flurry of sand. The visibly similar siblings, Brownie and Blondie, had not stopped to look back at any of the damage they might have caused. "I suppose you'll not be Impressing either of them, otherwise they might have stopped for you," Joisann commented, offering him a hand up.

"Are you kidding? After Devil's Food I question everything I've known about hatchlings." Sonulobai gratefully took the hand and she hoisted him up. "Thank you."

For a moment, her words caught in her throat. "You... are quite welcome." She gave him the best smile she could muster, considering her latest series of events. She knew he must not mean anything by his reply, no more than she had meant anything by hers.

"Are you all right?" he asked, in a a seemingly uncharacteristic show of empathy. But he had seen her hugging the blue hatchling, then later letting him go. It was only then that Sonulobai had realized that they had not Impressed. She did not look all right.

She shook her head and shrugged. "He wasn't mine," she replied simply. He wasn't mine.

Joisann and Green Newbuth

She saw the new hatchling at her feet out of the corner of her eye in the form of some neon green movement near her sandal. She turned away from Sonulobai kind of getting the gist before she was completely done looking at him. Not again. Go away. She pleaded with the inside of her skull. She didn't think she could keep her composure with another overly social hatchling. That's exactly what she got, and not in the way she feared.

Joisann! There you are!

She found the hatchling's eyes already swirling with rainbows, a now mostly dried little body pressing up against her thigh, and a nonstop voice intruding into her head. Since she had been taught that 'the dragon knows best,' she didn't fight it.

There's certainly been a lot going on hasn't there? Not all of it good, but things seem to have worked out. A girl kept me company.

A girl? Before she could ask, the image of Zirza filled her mind. So Strawberry Tart... and... and you...?

But I've found you now! Newbuth and Joisann, I think that sounds perfect, don't you?

"Sure." She looked up at Sonulobai, who was smiling at her. She reciprocated her best smile possible. After all, this was the greatest moment of her life. "Best of luck to you. Bye for now." She removed the tiny clawed fingers from her robe where they dug through and latched painfully into her skin like tiny fishhooks. "Let's go get you some food." Together, they walked over to the feeding tables, where she informed the Weyrlingmaster that she would be shortening her name to Joi.

Candidate Zirza

At Sticky Toffee Pudding's nudging, Zirza slowly opened her eyes and peeked around. The dark green was okay after all. She couldn't help but smile a little, even though the situation was scary. Hopefully that boy would take care of that dragon properly, now!

Huh? Sticky Toffee Pudding was suddenly moving away. Zirza scrambled to her feet to follow, wanting to see what was calling to the green. The dragon was certainly on a mission, now! They passed a bunch of the other Candidates and hatchlings (some of which must have just hatched, Zirza couldn't recall them from before the incident), so Zirza had to be careful not to get in the way of anyone, or the green herself.

Zirza watched as she came to a stop at Joisann and her eyes lit up with rainbows. Zirza practically beamed, watching the Impression.

"Yeah! You go and be happy, little one!" She cheered, probably too loudly to be polite, and waved at the pair of them. She wondered what Joisann was like, and if she could maybe visit with the green again someday.

... And now she found herself alone on the sands. Zirza glanced at Sonulobai, but didn't really have anything to say to the other Candidate, so she turned back to the activity she had been missing. The remaining eggs were getting very active and even more babies were wandering about. She wasn't sure which had come from where, she had missed so much!

Weyrlingmaster R'ulfr

L'ux

Thaliawen
To'da

The Weyrlingmaster referred to his student list and made sure L'ux and To'da were written there.

When he looked up from it, he said, "Now is going to be a very stressful time for all the new Weyrlings. It's going to be easy to forget the basics, as To'da knows, and other things that were discussed before the Hatching. Like remembering to choose elided names. Don't worry about it. Almost every one of your classmates are going to feel this way."

"Excited? Hm... Right now I'm trying to keep track of everything and make sure you all have what you need. I don't have time to be excited. But," he added with a grin, "I'm certain that once the hatching feast begins I won't be the only excited one."

Another weyrling team was made. Sticky Toffee Pudding Green Newbuth and Joisann. Strike that, it would be Joi now. It was as if R'ulfr had forgotten about the previous conversation as he attended to Joi and Newbuth. But that was just the nature of the job.

T'eir and Brown Gilwreyth - 5

As he watched, Joisann's whole face turned to watch the Blue hatchling's retreat. It still perplexed him that she could hold a hatchling perfectly capable of cutting her to ribbons, then after an obvious affection had grown, let him go. She must be a strong woman indeed. A leather worker of some kind? Also strong, but physically. She was absolutely amazing.

Then she finally got what she deserved, a hatchling all her own. He watched her leave, memorizing her looks and stride, the hatchling's bright coloring and unique markings. He may not know her name but he knew all about her in this short time. At the feast he was going to ask her to dance at least half a dozen times.

K'ndayo and Blue Audrath - 5

"Is that the second Brown of the hatching?" K'ndayo asked incredulously. Cheesecake was a handsome Brown and a rarity. However, he did not seem to be getting much attention, yet.

Out of the corner of his eye, T'eir continued his fixation. He had forgotten his lute. He was not speaking, nothing. But the air about him had somehow become more upbeat. K'ndayo could not really put his finger on it. Was he finally starting to heal? Well, good for him! He could not help but think that T'eir might need to be strong for his Gilwreyth, so this change of mood was fortunate indeed.

Joi and Green Newbuth
ChaosTheories

Too late Joi realized that one of the people cheering her and Newbuth on was none other than Zirza. Since she could not go back onto the Sands to speak with her, she decided to be on the lookout during the feast and festivities, provided Zirza did not Impress. Of course if she did, they would be free to chat while they fed and oiled their dragons. Joi wanted to thank Zirza for escorting and keeping Newbuth safe during the hatching. Newbuth had definitely needed it at the time.

You know if you want I could tell her myself. It's no trouble at all. I think she would like to hear me again anyway. Don't you think so? Newbuth opened her mouth wide, waiting for a piece of food.

When Newbuth spoke it was rather fast compared to normal speech, Joi noted. Was it part of her speaking style, or because she was hungry? "I just wanted to tell it to her face-to-face. I thought she would appreciate it," replied Joi, determined to tell her whether Newbuth did it first or not. She fed the little Green a piece of the raw meat given to the Weyrlings in a bucket. It was a nice system they had here, letting them watch the remainder of the Hatching instead of relegating them to the Weyrling barracks or something instead.

Newbuth gulped her food. It was almost too slow for her hungry belly. She had trouble forcing herself not to bite Joi's hand or retrieve great mouthfuls of meat from the bucket. Is that so? I suppose either way is fine, so we'll wait until the feast like you wanted.

Thank you, Newbuth.

Candidate Rothgar

Seeing that his attempted intervention had been completely ineffectual, Rothgar was at least happy to see the brothers Impress. The other dragons that had come to their sister's rescue had gone their separate ways and so he decided it was time for him to do the same. He also decided that if anything else happened involving hatchlings attacking Candidates, he would leave them be. It rubbed him wrong to do leave somebody needing help alone, but if they didn't call for help it was none of his business. It still rubbed him wrong.

Scuffing his feet as he went, Rothgar returned to the larger body of Candidates noting that it was beginning to thin out some. More and more Candidates were becoming Weyrlings. That was very good, but there were still plenty of dragons coming out of the shell to Impress. He watched Lemon Drizzle head back to the eggs, Cannoli split and call out to her new rider from the feeding tables, dodged Blondie and Brownie criss-crossing through the Candidates, bowed to Cheesecake when he warbled at the Candidates, pondered the tiny Shortbread and Blueberry Muffin over by the eggs, almost missed the Impression of Joisann and Sticky Toffee Pudding, quickly got out of the way of Red Velvet's march, and anticipated the approach of Bread Pudding. It was an eventful hatching right now, and it was easy to get caught up in it and feel great about it too.

"I love hatchings!" he said to nobody in particular with a crooked grin. He'd been to so many it seemed, and it never got old, just felt a little empty at the end because he always walked off the Sands alone.

Red Velvet, it seemed, was not really in the mood to deal with Brownie's nonsense. The larger blue spotted the smaller one out of the corner of his eye and immediately whirled around. Brownie promptly walked into the other blue's chest. Red Velvet didn't hiss or snarl, just gave a disapproving snort. This seemed to be enough for Brownie however, who skulked away backwards from his brother, before quickly turning tail and sprinting off. Blondie following along closely behind. Giving himself a small shake, Red Velvet wasn't going to let their shenanigans throw him off. Turning again the dragon quickly took up his strut once more.

Blondie and Brownie didn't get very far before they gave up running. Stopping the pair looked at each other and clearly had some conversation pass between the two. Whatever it was got the pair rather excited, as Brownie began to enthusiastically nod his head, while Blondie shuffled around excitedly. Seemingly with no warning the pair split apart, once more diving into the crowd of candidates.

The pair seemed to be looking for something, both rapidly scanning the crowd as they wove between legs. Brownie seemed to find his quarry first. Stopping at Kakar's feet. Literally his feet. The blue stared intently, before darting forward and sinking his teeth into the leather of the candidate's sandal. The blue didn't seem intent on giving Kakar any time to respond, wrenching on the footwear with all of his strength. He needed this.

Blondie meanwhile had still been searching, but it hadn't taken her long to find something worthwhile. She wouldn't be after something so common as a sandal. There were hundreds of those around. No, she had her eyes on something much more unique. The green stayed low to the ground as she crept towards a candidate who seemed to already be distracted by one of her siblings. Despite her earlier ruckus, Blondie was surprisingly quiet on her approach. Waiting until the last moment before making her move. Rushing forwards the green snatched the flute from Shahaeran's hands and running off with it, proudly trilling around her stolen prize.

The last five eggs seemed to be, for the most part, getting into their motions. Cheese and Wine was beginning to crack, while Blackforest Gateau lazily stretched and shifted. Apple Pie gave yet another shudder. It had been working in short shakes since early on in the hatching. Yet despite this there wasn't a single crack on the surface of the egg. This latest shake had seemed to lack the energy of earlier endeavours.

Something about their sibling's behaviour caught the attention of Shortbread. The green left her brother's side and approached the egg, peeping softly. The egg shifted slightly as Shortbread rested her face against it, listening intently. Leaning back slightly the little green looked up at the large egg. Very carefully she settled onto her haunches, lifting her front paws and flexing her claws, raking them down the surface of the shell. Her method was slow and deliberate as she worked at the brown and green egg, scraping away at the colour of the shell on a particular spot. Shortbread focused solely on her work, not looking away even when Lemon Drizzle appeared at her side to examine what she was doing. A triumphant peep escaped the green when a claw finally broke the surface. Withdrawing her claws the green carefully pushed her nose at the small gap, moving her snout to force the hole bigger. Lemon Drizzle quickly shifted to standing behind the large egg, bracing it with his body as his sister pushed herself against the egg, her head eventually disappearing within.

Baking Tray it seemed didn't need any assistance with their hatching. A rather abrupt crack could be heard through the sands, and it didn't take long to see the area of impact on the silver egg. Cracks radiated from a single point on the egg's side. The location didn't stand a chance against the second blow, shattering outward as what appeared to be a dark back foot stuck out the side. It was quickly joined by another as the hatchling kicked his way out of the egg. It took only a scant few seconds before there was no longer an egg on the sands, but a newly hatched blue. Slowly blinking eyes took in the numerous things going on around him, and Baking Tray found them decidedly uninteresting. Not wasting any time the blue trotted to the candidates, right up to one in particular, eyes swirling with rainbows. All in all it had taken less than a minute for the blue to get out of his shell and impress. He was certainly efficient.

Kakar sighed as he watched the dragons, none had showed much interest in him, would he be left Standing alone today? would he have to watch his twin brother from afar while he waited for his dragon? So lost in his thoughts he was, he didn't notice Brownie until his sandal was tugged, wrenched and his leg went in the air, the sandal came off his foot and he landed hard on his back, knocking the wind out of him, leaving him fighting to breathe for a minute.

S'var 17

"I think he's the third now," S'var replied to K'ndaya, his gaze drifting back to the pale brown as he spoke. "I'd hope to see at least one more out of a clutch this size but you never can tell." More greens would be more important to the north right now, but that didn't diminish his fondness for seeing dragons of the same hue as his own appear on the sands.

As the bulk of the rest of the clutch started their efforts to hatch in earnest it seemed that one of them was having trouble, or at least its siblings seemed to think so. "There's something you don't see every day," he murmured as Shortbread and Lemon Drizzle teamed up to work on breaking the shell, could Apple Pie be a white? Was something else wrong with it? Or did it just have a particularly thick shell? Once they'd made a hole in the shell Shortbread's whole head vanished inside and S'var leaned forward, so focused on the scene that he barely noticed the play of Blondie and Brownie, or the extremely efficient hatching and Impression of Baking Tray.

{Posting in two segments to maintain sanity}

Weyrling Tollar of green Pauth
magnadearel
Turanves and Azelth

Tollar watched each of the others, but was more centered on Pauth and trying to keep her still. It was frustrating how, every time someone came over, Pauth would pounce up on the table and cheep out a little greeting with her wings spread wide. He'd had to grab her tail to regain her attention and keep her from running off more than once.

When Turanves limped over and flopped against the wall, Pauth was faster than the tunnelsnake-catcher and bounced over to greet her sister and their rider. Her bubbly, energetic voice was impossible to miss as it was broadcast. ~HI! It's a pleasure to meet you-~ she glanced at her sister before back at Turanves. ~Ruvantes! Hey, be happy, you have Azelf the magnificent! See how pretty she is! How much she loves you!~ The exuberant (yes, that was the word!) green draped her wings over her sibling and lifted her chin on her own muzzle before her eye caught the firelizard. ~Ooh, and a little one, too! Hello little one!~ She cheered at the group and slipped into a playbow. ~Come and sit with all of us! You are friend, now! And friends are awesome!~

Tollar was dusting himself off as he came over with his bucket. He was coming to terms with his lack of control here. "Mind if I sit with you? Seems she's decided to." He nodded towards the injuries R'ulfr had already pointed out. "Might help take your mind off the pain while the medics clean you up."

Weyrling Cartoun of green Montezumalth

R'ulfr said Elided names out loud as part of the standard weyrling process, Cartoun will choose one.
Zirza talking to herself, Montezumalth advises she's talking to Newbuth

Cartoun's attention span for the sands was limited. He didn't care about the sands right now. Shard the candidates, for all that mattered was his Montezumalth and her empty stomach, and her half-empty bucket. Well... Not entirely. He was paying attention to his more immediate surroundings. More arrivals meant more faces to learn, more dragons to meet, more family to... Y'know, be?

Eh, he wasn't sure. ~They do not matter now, ridermine. They are in their own worlds, handling their own tasks.~ He started to chide her for the thought process. ~They can all matter again when I am fed and cleaned to be as pretty as you are.~
He chuckled softly. "Pretty? Do you think I'm pretty, Montezumalth?"
~Be assured, ridermine. Only the prettiest boy may feed the prettiest dragon.~ Her small chest puffed out with pride for a moment before her jowels slid forward to encompass the next piece on his hand and dragged it from him.
"You know I'll be a man one day, right?"
~And then,~ she purred. ~-only the pretties man may ride the prettiest dragon.~ She touched her muzzle to his hand eagerly. ~Now, forget not to feed me. I am still hungry, after-all.~

Cartoun giggled softly and patted her nose before reaching for another of the veritably handful-sized meat chunks for him. He was not unaware of other conversations, though. Every time Weyrlingmaster R'ulfr greeted a new pair, he'd glance over to memorize faces of both rider and dragon, and when they were addressed. So he did not miss the references to Elidid names and Elisions to the other riders, and tilted his head at the description. From the announcement of new names, he gathered they must be why dragon riders always had that hard jump in their names. A shortening mechanism, he guessed?

~That does seem it, yes.~
"Huh, I guess I should have one, too, then? To be a proper rider, I mean."
~You will forever be the properest rider that ever proper'd, ridermine.~ the green purred, urging for another piece while he thought about it.

L'ux, To'da, Joi... Even R'ulfr, he guessed, had all done that name shortening thing. He wondered how close those were to their real names. "Er... Weyrlingmaster R'ulfr, I'd like to pick a new name, too." He said, waiting for Montezumalth to finish her last bite before he'd pull out another. The bucket was ever-nearing empty, and he could finally feel those painful gurgles dying down. "It seems like that Elision thing's just a name shortening or a hard jump in the middle, so... I was thinking C'oun?" He wasn't bothered about keeping his surname. It wouldn't do him much good as a dragonrider if it was never used, anyways.

~The properest, beautifulest name, my C'oun.~

Candidate Shahaeran
The_Muffin_Puppy
Blondie Green stole Shahaeran's flute. There's a world about to explode here.

Shah had been ready to try and help from a distance with the goings-on around that green, but held off on the instructions she remembered from training. 'Don't get involved in others' fights. Keep your thoughts in line and positive whenever possible.' So she had just tried to do that. She'd almost given the bronze a few moments ago flute lessons, and she was excited at the prospect.

So when another dragon, blue, came up to her to inspect her, and then asked how he could make this hatching the best ever, she had only one answer. "I would love to hear a dragon sing." she said softly, tilting her head. She was cut off at the last moment as a dervish of hide and wings and tails bolted between her legs and pulled them out from under her, leaving her face down in the sand and half-buried. She didn't have time to be breathless, as she hurried to sit up out of the cloying heat and spit out the grains, coughing to clear her throat and then hunting for the flute she'd dropped.

She sighed when she find it and gave a wry smile in the direction the pair had gone when she'd recovered, pushing back up to her feet, now hot and uncomfortable in more ways than she'd thought possible.

And then, all at once, her hand was empty. Her fingers snapped together with nothing between them and her eyes twitched as the looked at her rising hand, where should have been, and always was, the multi-barrelled flute her brother had carved. Her eyes trailed up to the green who'd relieved her of the comfort-and-hobby item. "That... That's mine." she whimpered, then turned back to her blue companion, trying to figure out if she would do him any ill going after the green thief. "Would... you excuse me?" She knew she shouldn't go chasing after the hatchlings, but... that was important. There'd be an exception for that, right? She gave the blue a little bow and started after the green that had stolen her flute.

Shah tried to police her pace to be a calm one, but a certain amount of urgency could be seen stressing her strides. "H-hey, that's not yours! - excuse me," she muttered, as she slipped between two candidates, trying for more open sand. "Give it back! Please?" All the while, she matra'd to herself that it would be fine, everything would be fine. When she realized it must be the heat making the sands and the little green blob bleary, she made the silent decision to seek water from the medics... after she recovered her flute, of course.

Lorekeeper Syneca

Syneca may not have been involved, but that meant nothing to her recording path. Her feather rattled to follow the proceedings of the disagreement between the green and what... eventually turned out to be her rider! That was surprising, and She couldn't remember hearing anything about that kind of thing happening. It seemed... Unusual somehow. 'Most dragons don't attack their riders' she noted. 'But there must have been some justification nobody else has been able to see.' Her pen was ever-moving, noting the boy's refusal of medical care and offering brief descriptions of the dispersal afterwards, too. And then a put-out Rothgar's impression, too!

That cute little blue who'd hugged one of the candidates had moved to stand in front of another candidate, but still did not bear rainbows in his eyes, despite a lengthy stay. They weren't by any means the only dragons among the candidates. Two more eggs had hatched at the same time, and a third had divulged a lovely pale brown that almost looked white to Syneca. There was so much going on. Another egg hatched out a speckled green, and that shy little one was still hiding among them when her siblings continued to leave the nest, whether they were still eggs or not! She was just wondering how 'normal' some of these goings-on were when she looked up just in time to see the green of the 'hyper twins' run off with someone's flute, and a hatched dragon's head stuffed inside a barely-cracked shell, with another standing behind and upon it. There was so much to a hatching, how could she possibly keep up!?

S'var offered up his waterskin and laughed at Cannoli's antics and quick decision
S'var hoped outwardly for more greens

C'ran noticed a change in T'eir's atmosphere. It was more upbeat, but also seemed more distracted. Maybe... He glanced at Dimeti. Yup, that had to be it. He was doing that possessive thing again. He smiled and clapped T'eir on the shoulder. "Y'know I was teasing, right? I'm useless in the kitchen, I'd just end up burning the food."

He sighed in releaf when the fool of a child on the field finally let himself reach out. Had he just not believed a dragon could be his? He'd heard of that before, candidates who'd lost confidence because of a long standing. Maybe that was it. "Oh, yeah, he may have some hard times. Ah well, he's a rider now, he'll get figured out."

"Greens is good, but we get what we get, right?" So far, that included a decent number of greens! "As long as they're healthy and able, color's not a big factor. Not with as many greens as we got already. Survival's what's important now."

Bronzerider Careese of bronze Toplamath

Careese had been paying attention... mostly. Ever since the stands had gotten back to calm after the boy and his green had left, though, she'd been working towards a midday doze in the cavern's heat, and it wasn't until one of the candidates started after the little balls of energy, calling for them to give something back she snapped back awake, staring blearily at the thinning crowd on the sands. Some girl had gotten a dragon to hug them but not impressed to it; she'd seen that through her daze before. He was... oh... wait, had that idiot candidate just left the blue behind? Ugh... This group of children... Careese rolled her eyes, and at their peak noticed her bronze above, still watching intently, tail wagging like a hound's. "... Yeah, you're probably right. Bet a stretch would help." So she stood and did that.

As Kakar's eyes fell upon him Cheesecake turned to the candidate with a soft croon sent a warm feeling out to him, he didn't know if his dragon was here or not but he approved of the candidate's patience and wished him the best.

But speaking of riders it was time to find his own, he was confident that they were here somewhere but where? A methodical, calm approach was best in times such as these and so he headed towards one end of the rank of candidates and started along it. When he neared Rothgar he slowed and then paused before the candidate and bowed his head, sending a wave of thanks and encouragement along with it - Rothgar had tried to keep proper order at an important time? That was good, he was sorry that it hadn't been well received but it would set Rothgar in good stead for his future. With another little warble the brown moved on once more, seeking the one who needed him the most.

Cheesecake's careful approach would no doubt have seen him find his rider in the end but as it happened, well, something else happened. Brownie and Blondie's continued antics weren't something he approved of in this time and place but his priority had to be finding his rider not telling them off, but then-

As Shahaeran fell, scrabbled in the sand, and then scrambled upright to give chase to Blondie the brown's eyes flashed at first yellow and then fiery orange, and with a baby roar he barrelled across the sand towards his sister. After a few frantic twists and turns his shoulder slammed into hers hard, knocking the smaller dragon prone, and as she fell he snatched up the flute before giving her a thorough (slightly muffled) scolding and a firm mental shove to get on with what was important right now!

Anger spent as soon as it had flared the brown turned to Shahaeran with an abruptly embarrassed air about him and rainbows whirling in his eyes. Oh dear, I'm so sorry about that display Shahaeran, I didn't handle that properly at all - but I do have your flute for you. I am your Marhath, now and forever.

When the soft brown crooned at him, Kakar's heart soared... was he? ... the warm feeling he recieved was nice but not what he had hoped for, He tried not to be bitter as he fought for breath after landing on the ground because of the blue hatchling, hot tears sprang in the corner of his eyes but he fought it, wiping them away as he drew shaky breaths, feeling the hot sands burning through his robes but not wanting to get up and face things yet.

Then... THEN.. the brown ran, snatched the flute from the green, returning it to the girl... with rainbow eyes.... NOT FAIR! he choked back a sob .... no.. he couldn't get upset, it wasn't fair on the dragons either.... they couldn't help it if they weren't his dragon.. but oh.... it was a very bitter sting he felt, that girl.. she'd broken rules bringing the flute... daring to play it... even if she had helped him and Kakaw earlier... No... it wasn't fair at all but ... it wasn't like he could FORCE one of the babies to choose him. He fought his twisting stomach and stood... well sort of stood, wobbling as he rested his sandal-less foot, on the one with the sandal. keeping his bare skin off the burning sands.
