Their shells were quite hard and every once in a while one or another of the eggs would give a small shake. She knew it hadn’t been time for them to hatch quite yet. Starelth simply nudged her eggs back into their appropriate positions with a thrum of affection. Today though, close to midmorning, Starelth felt a sudden stillness come over the eggs. Like everything was holding their breath for a long moment. Several eggs gave a simultaneous shift. They were ready. M’limine, the eggs are ready to hatch, her monotone voice reached out to her rider. Inside the Hatching Sands, Starelth started to hum, softly at first, but quickly gaining volume. M’li got up and moved from where she’d been hanging out to stand beside her dragon and watch the eggs begin their wobble. Dragons of Fort. Bring your riders. Bring the candidates. For it is time for my eggs to hatch and search for Theirs.

Chellemana // Candidate / Apprentice Winemaker Nashanna // Candidate / Apprentice Glassmaker
The siblings Chelle and Nassah came out onto the Sands hand in hand. They were each other's rock. The death of a queen foreshadowed this, their first hatching since. But they knew the risks and had decided the potential was great. It took courage to be here today and they had plenty. Bowing as one to the mother, Chellemana nodded to Starelth and Nashanna grinned at her. Then they followed their fellow candidates up to in front of the eggs.
Chelle straightened Nassah's hair nervously and said, "You'll do well today."
Nassah nodded. "You too."
Chelle left their sister with the other girls and took their place... somewhere between the boys and girls. It hardly mattered to Chelle where they were. Once the eggs started rocking things would change and feet would wander.
Nashanna glanced back at Chellemana then back at the eggs. She could not help but scowl at the Shadow egg but sighed and thought, I know you will do well today too.

Rothgar // Candidate / Apprentice Beastcrafter
Rothgar put away a sweater he was knitting and slipped into his candidate robes. It was such a simple process but he dropped his project twice and fumbled with the white robe for what seemed like an entire candlemark. When he got to the Sands, he almost forgot to bow to Starelth. I am so sorry! I hope I'm not late. He was not late, but he was flustered enough to trick himself into believing it for a moment or two.
He took his place with the boys and men standing with hope and nervousness in their expressions. Then he took a deep breath and focused on the eggs. He forced himself to stop shuffling in his sandals. He stopped chewing on his lip. He wiped his sweaty palms on his thighs. Breathe. Smile. Mean the smile, dimglow! Relax. This hatching could take a while, after all.

Maddeck // Standidate / Apprentice Healer
Maddeck was not on the Sands this time. After the last hatching he just did not feel up to volunteering to patch up the candidates. Next time, he promised himself. It was his duty as a medic anyhow. Instead, he sat in the Stands to watch. Last time he had not appreciated the importance of this event quite as well as he did today. Who would be the future of Pern? Well, it was not as if a craft was any less important. But here and now it was everything to try to become something else. And those eggs would make the decision.

Aessa had paused in her duties when the thrumming sounded. With one book in hand, she let the call sink through her until the book slid out of her palm. She snapped to in time to catch it and slunk it on the shelf with what was left of her duties before evacuating the small corner of the library, making hard for her quarters and her simple white dress. As she turned to leave, she felt the chill stone of the steps beneath her feet and slipped turning around, grabbing her sandles from inside her door before making her way down again. She could be seen hopping accross the bowl to the weyr, pulling her sandals on one leg at a time until she was finally in line with the others and able to calm herself.
With a steadying breath, she took her turn bowing to the green mother and her rider, before joining the other girls and looking about the sands. She thought back on her encounters. Some eager, some hesitant some... over-exuberant and others only really concerned with themselves. Not a thing was wrong with any of them, and she knew they'd all do well, today. With a glance at her fellow candidates, she could only hope there wouldn't be too much for the medics to do. The potential for harm at a hatching was no secret in any corner of the world.

Demanthra/Candidate/Harper Apprentice
Demanthra watched as the eggs began to rock, excitement was filling every fiber of her being. This was one of those times she wished she had more than one set of eyes, as her gaze flickered from one egg to another. Which one was going to crack first, she really thought it was anyone's guess. For a moment, it looked like shadow might go first and then maroon red, before leather orange decided they would be first. Out of the shell came a handsome blue, but he appeared to be upset about something.
Welcome, little one, into the world. I think you look very handsome, she thought warmly to him. She hoped that would make him feel a little better, whatever might be bothering him. Maybe he wasn't happy about the egg goop that was covering him. She watched as he stepped away from his egg and sat down, seeming to be content to wait. Then she noticed some of the other eggs had begun to move more. Including the magenta speckle, which was definitely looking like it was ready to burst. Just as the brunette thought, the egg fell away to reveal a beautiful green hide.
Hello pretty one, it is very nice to see you. It is okay, you can come meet everyone, she encouraged. The little one looked a little shy, she hoped she would come find her rider, wherever they may be.
