The green had been tenderly tending her eggs over the weeks since the Touching. Their shells were quite hard and every once in a while one or another of the eggs would give a small shake. She knew it hadn’t been time for them to hatch quite yet. Starelth simply nudged her eggs back into their appropriate positions with a thrum of affection.

Today though, close to midmorning, Starelth felt a sudden stillness come over the eggs. Like everything was holding their breath for a long moment. Several eggs gave a simultaneous shift. They were ready.

M’limine, the eggs are ready to hatch, her monotone voice reached out to her rider. Inside the Hatching Sands, Starelth started to hum, softly at first, but quickly gaining volume. M’li got up and moved from where she’d been hanging out to stand beside her dragon and watch the eggs begin their wobble.

Dragons of Fort. Bring your riders. Bring the candidates. For it is time for my eggs to hatch and search for Theirs.

Demanthra/Candidate/Harper Apprentice

Demanthra was working on sweeping in the barracks, when she heard the humming. She felt excitement spill over her as she hastily got her broom put away and went to get into her candidate robes. She slipped into her white robes and into her sandals, before heading out to the sands with everyone else. Once on the hot sands, she bowed to Starelth and her rider as politely as she could. She was smiling as she did so, before she headed over to where the girls would be. Her eyes took in all the eggs, remembering the reactions she had gotten from some of them.

Chellemana // Candidate / Apprentice Winemaker
Nashanna // Candidate / Apprentice Glassmaker

The siblings Chelle and Nassah came out onto the Sands hand in hand. They were each other's rock. The death of a queen foreshadowed this, their first hatching since. But they knew the risks and had decided the potential was great. It took courage to be here today and they had plenty. Bowing as one to the mother, Chellemana nodded to Starelth and Nashanna grinned at her. Then they followed their fellow candidates up to in front of the eggs.

Chelle straightened Nassah's hair nervously and said, "You'll do well today."

Nassah nodded. "You too."

Chelle left their sister with the other girls and took their place... somewhere between the boys and girls. It hardly mattered to Chelle where they were. Once the eggs started rocking things would change and feet would wander.

Nashanna glanced back at Chellemana then back at the eggs. She could not help but scowl at the Shadow egg but sighed and thought, I know you will do well today too.

Rothgar // Candidate / Apprentice Beastcrafter

Rothgar put away a sweater he was knitting and slipped into his candidate robes. It was such a simple process but he dropped his project twice and fumbled with the white robe for what seemed like an entire candlemark. When he got to the Sands, he almost forgot to bow to Starelth. I am so sorry! I hope I'm not late. He was not late, but he was flustered enough to trick himself into believing it for a moment or two.

He took his place with the boys and men standing with hope and nervousness in their expressions. Then he took a deep breath and focused on the eggs. He forced himself to stop shuffling in his sandals. He stopped chewing on his lip. He wiped his sweaty palms on his thighs. Breathe. Smile. Mean the smile, dimglow! Relax. This hatching could take a while, after all.

Maddeck // Standidate / Apprentice Healer

Maddeck was not on the Sands this time. After the last hatching he just did not feel up to volunteering to patch up the candidates. Next time, he promised himself. It was his duty as a medic anyhow. Instead, he sat in the Stands to watch. Last time he had not appreciated the importance of this event quite as well as he did today. Who would be the future of Pern? Well, it was not as if a craft was any less important. But here and now it was everything to try to become something else. And those eggs would make the decision.

Aessa had paused in her duties when the thrumming sounded. With one book in hand, she let the call sink through her until the book slid out of her palm. She snapped to in time to catch it and slunk it on the shelf with what was left of her duties before evacuating the small corner of the library, making hard for her quarters and her simple white dress. As she turned to leave, she felt the chill stone of the steps beneath her feet and slipped turning around, grabbing her sandles from inside her door before making her way down again. She could be seen hopping accross the bowl to the weyr, pulling her sandals on one leg at a time until she was finally in line with the others and able to calm herself.

With a steadying breath, she took her turn bowing to the green mother and her rider, before joining the other girls and looking about the sands. She thought back on her encounters. Some eager, some hesitant some... over-exuberant and others only really concerned with themselves. Not a thing was wrong with any of them, and she knew they'd all do well, today. With a glance at her fellow candidates, she could only hope there wouldn't be too much for the medics to do. The potential for harm at a hatching was no secret in any corner of the world.

Candidate Turanves

He'd been working on chores. Or pretending to work. His mind really was thinking about the upcoming lunch. He was hungry and looking forward to what he could get. There was the usual options, but he was mulling over what the cooks might have made special for today. Why was this taking so long?

It took him moving closer to a window to hear the humming as it started and a few moments for it to trickle through his brain. Humming and eggs! He knew it was time to stand again! Maybe his dragon would be among these!

Turanves raced to his quarters to grab his hatching robe and sandals. Quickly putting them on and making his way excitedly to the sands. He gave a low bow to the green and her rider. It really was the eggs that he was here for though. Sure the green clutched them, but it was one of the dragons that would come from those eggs that would be his partner.

He approached the boy's side and moved toward the front. Turan wanted a good view.

(He's open for interactions!)

Fisher / Candidate

Whatever it was Fsher had been doing needed to be stopped as soon as the eggs were cracking, apparently. The teen had been in the middle of some task or another when she (and the others) were yelled at and told to get dressed and well, honestly, it was a whirlwind. Still, she somehow managed to get her robes and other items on properly, and when it was time to bow and get in line she followed the instructions down to the letter.

This was it, after all. The big moment everyone had been waiting for. The whole reason behind that touching thing, and the fighting to save lives thing. All of this was what was worth the lessons and heart pounding and....uh..

Now what?

Fisher shifted where she stood, her hand rubbing against the shortness of her hair. She had no idea what came next, at least outside of whatever'd been told to her during the classes.

The eggs shooked and rocked with purpose in time to the growing hum as more and more adult dragons, and perhaps a few hatchlings, took up the call. A few here, a trio there; the hatching sands filled with anticipation as people and dragons filled the Sands and Stands. Starelth hummed her full welcome to her clutch. Be welcomed into the world my child.

Several seemed eager to be the first to hatch, Shadow shook and shivered, Maroon Red Egg wobbled vigorously on the sands. It was the Leather Orange Egg that won the race. With a resounding crack, a fissure appeared down the length of the shell. It took a moment for the two halves to slowly fall open revealing a dark blue sitting in his egg goop.

Fisher / Candidate

Oh man, there one was. A little dragon, fresh from egg and covered in goop - Fisher couldn't help but think it was cute. More than able to murder her and everyone on the sands were it to get a wild hair up its tail, but still pretty cute. The candidate's brain ran through what she was supposed to do - just think warm and welcoming thoughts - but beyond that not much more.

Hello howdy hi. Small and cute, find your lifemate, enjoy the day.

All those sort of thougts.

Aessa watched, her eyes flitting from one egg to another as she, rather dutifully, neglected to look up at the thrum sounding above her. Oh, Sunset was cracked, and released to the world a wet, goopy blue. As she had expected, he was even more beautiful than his egg had been, and she couldn't help but let her voice hum with the dragons, in hopes that it carried her welcoming thoughts to the new dragonet.

Chellemana // Candidate / Apprentice Winemaker

Chellemana watched with great fascination while three eggs wiggled and wobbled in an effort to crack and open. Leather Orange was the first to do so, depositing a new blue into the world. "Wow..." she hissed to themself. Just the whole process of being born left the youth with a great sense of awe.

- - -

Nashanna // Candidate / Apprentice Glassmaker

From the Leather Orange egg came a blue. In her mind, Nassah ran over her conversation with that egg from the Touching. She wanted to get things right. She didn't care what color dragon she might pair off with, she just wanted to do this right. Okay, now, positive thoughts. And so she thought to the hatchling that need to clean off the shell goop before meeting the Candidates. Her tone was encouraging.

- - -

Rothgar // Candidate / Apprentice Beastcrafter

Rothgar had seen animals born since he was little. Hatching from an egg was a little bit different! The rainbow shells rocked and soon enough a dragon was born. A little whoop! escaped his lips in his excitement.

Maddeck // Standidate / Apprentice Healer

Up in the stands the vantage point was good. One of the larger eggs revealed its contents to be a blue, though the view of its crack and slow opening was a bit obscure. Maddeck waited, holding his breath for a moment before he realized it was happening. Then he just watched, wondering who would help him off the Sands and into his new life.

Leather Orange Blue wrinkled his nose at his soppy entrance. That wasn't exactly the entrance he'd intended to make. It certainly could have been more impressive, but at least he was first! He stood and shook his wings as he regarded his audience.

Clean enough he stepped from the remains of his egg and sat down. The blue seemed calm enough for the moment. More eggs were shaking. A crack was appearing in the side of Gradient Blue, but it wasn’t there yet. Magenta Speckle Egg wiggled itself free of the sands and tipped itself back and forth. It knocked against the silent, and dark brooding shape of Shadow Egg then Dark Purple Egg.

The egg crumbled apart to reveal a light green with speckling on her hindquarters. Magenta Speckle Green lifted her head shyly from the shell remnants to take in those around her.

Demanthra/Candidate/Harper Apprentice

Demanthra watched as the eggs began to rock, excitement was filling every fiber of her being. This was one of those times she wished she had more than one set of eyes, as her gaze flickered from one egg to another. Which one was going to crack first, she really thought it was anyone's guess. For a moment, it looked like shadow might go first and then maroon red, before leather orange decided they would be first. Out of the shell came a handsome blue, but he appeared to be upset about something.

Welcome, little one, into the world. I think you look very handsome, she thought warmly to him. She hoped that would make him feel a little better, whatever might be bothering him. Maybe he wasn't happy about the egg goop that was covering him. She watched as he stepped away from his egg and sat down, seeming to be content to wait. Then she noticed some of the other eggs had begun to move more. Including the magenta speckle, which was definitely looking like it was ready to burst. Just as the brunette thought, the egg fell away to reveal a beautiful green hide.

Hello pretty one, it is very nice to see you. It is okay, you can come meet everyone, she encouraged. The little one looked a little shy, she hoped she would come find her rider, wherever they may be.

As the first two eggs cracked V' wormed her way through the crowd in the stands until she reached M’li; she grinned at her classmate and nudged her rather sharply in the ribs with her elbow as she took a seat beside her. "Good start!" she hissed out of the corner of her mouth as the little green blinked around at the world she suddenly found herself facing; seemed like only yesterday that Lith's hatchlings were doing the same. While it hadn't been yesterday it hadn't been that long but the world was a different place now; Starleth's clutch proved that Lithustoth wasn't just some freak, that greens really were going to save Pern.

Pretty shaffing satisfying in her opinion.

Leather Orange Blue continued to sit and stare. He seemed to be thinking hard, as if he was trying to puzzle something out.

Magenta Speckle Green let her eyes roam over the sands. Not at the candidates, oh no. At the dragons. Errrr, well dragon. Only one sibling had come forth so far. That just wouldn’t do for her. She rose to her feet and moved to the edge of the clutch, eagerly awaiting their arrival. Magenta Speckle Green looked up to chirrup a greeting at her mother as they waited.

Gradient Blue Egg made sure that their sister wasn’t kept waiting too long. The crack had widened and a pale dragon pushed his way free of the egg. Once completely free and standing on his own, it was easy to see the new dragonet was in fact a bronze. He was pale for a bronze, with odd paler markings on head and side.

M’li felt a sharp blow to her ribs and let the air out of her lungs with a whoosh. She’d been so interested in the hatching eggs that she didn’t even see V’ approach. “V’! Take it easy on me.” She laughed. “Lithustoth’s kids will have younger brothers and sisters to grow up with. Do you think they’ll be trained together? Are they close enough in age?”
