Wingleader & Wingsecond Contest

Welcome to Echoes of Pern Wingleader & Wingsecond Contest! This contest will allow players to obtain some ranking personas for High Reaches Weyr and Western Weyr. Players will be able to create new characters in need of semi-custom art, or put forward their own characters in hopes that they will be tapped into a Wingleader or Wingsecond position.

Please note that we are running things differently this time! We learned some things from our first Wingleader/Wingsecond contest, and are going to try to run things differently to see if this helps. Remember, we'll be running these fairly regularly, to continue to share the love, so it's possible we'll finesse the process next time, too. :3

That said, please make sure you read everything before you jump right in!

This contest will be judged. It is prompt based. Some Wingleaders and Wingseconds will be replaced by new players/characters. There's also the possibility that we don't get enough active interest, so that might result in NPCs stepping in. If that happens, Uta or Cheri or possibly other Staff might play them, until enough time passes and we run another Wingleader Contest. We would ideally prefer all Wings have PC players, but understand we may not have enough interest to cover six Wings.

Begins: Now!
Ends: Someday. The world may never know. Maybe March 10th? 2pm PT. Who even knows.

Still interested? Keep reading for more information!

Wingleaders -- The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

What's a Wingleader?
Wingleaders are dragonriders associated with one of the Weyrs on Pern. These riders are hand-picked by the current Weyrleader, and are given responsibility for an assigned Wing. Wings consist of something between thirty and sixty riders, depending on the health and size of the Weyr. There is always at least one Wingsecond, but often times two or three, depending on the size and needs of the Wing.

Wingleaders work with an assigned Flightleader, and beneath the Weyrleader, to ensure that their Wings are ready to fight Thread efficiently, knowledgeably, and with minimal casualties.

When a wingrider gets in trouble it is up to their Wingleader to admonish and keep them in line. Should a Wingleader fail to keep his wing in line, or trouble is bad enough to reach the Weyrleader's desk, then the Wingleader will be held accountable. Undisciplined Wingleaders can and will be demoted, so those who are interested in this role will find themselves in need of responsibility.

Wingleaders are an important role. Wingleaders know their riders inside and out; they ideally should know what their individual strengths and weaknesses are, as well as what the Wings strengths and weaknesses are -- on land and in air. They assign their riders to daily sweeps and often choose daily drills to focus upon. They meet with the Weyrleader, Weyrleader Second, and Flightleaders regularly (sometimes together, sometimes individually) to discuss upcoming Thread, and tactics needed to best fight it.

Wingleaders put their riders lives in their hands every Threadfall. An inept Wingleader could prove devastating to a Wing and a Flight. One bad call cold put the entire Wing at risk. Choosing the wrong formation when the weather unexpectedly changes, or not listening to a riders needs, could be fatal, so it is very important a Weyrleader choose competent Wingleaders.

Wingleaders get to choose their Wingseconds, who the work with to help keep order, or to run things while the Wingleader is away.

What's a Wingsecond?
Wingseconds are basically the right hand men and women who assist in keeping a Wing going. While they are not quite as high ranking as Wingleader, they are the next highest, and still command respect from Wingriders and non-Riders.

Wingseconds are a support role. While they usually take orders from the Wingleader, when the Wingleader is injured, ill, or otherwise indisposed, then the Wingseconds will step in as leaders. This means those put in this position must be capable and responsible enough to command a Wing. It's very possible a Wingsecond will have the lives of up to fifty riders in their hands, and might need to lead them through Threadfall if the Wingleader gets injured.

This is a big role.

Traditionally, Wingseconds will be given orders and delegated tasks from the Wingleader. This way the Wingleader can focus n assignments from the Weyrleader, or delegate those to his Wingseconds and Wingriders as needed. It's a group effort, after all; the Wingseconds are there to help support their Wing but also their Wingleader, and ultimately, the Weyrleadership.

So what does this mean...?
By trying out for this contest it means your character will be given one of the PC Wings for either High Reaches Weyr or Western Weyr for at least 1 year! While this is not a RP Required position, it is hoped that Wingleaders will be active and engage with the RPers in the shop and their Wing.

You will be allowed to make Wing Meetings, Wingdrills, etc. The Weyrleader, Weyrleader Second, or Flightleader might call on your character for a group or one-on-one style meeting. It is a position of honor ICly and your characters will be given a pay raise, new shoulder knots, and any amenities and benefits that come with the rank. This usually means a substantially larger weyr, their own private bathing quarters, their own offices close to conference rooms, are some of the first weyrs to be cleaned/have laundry cleaned/returned, etc.

For Wingleaders that are actively being RPed and used in the shop, we'll let you keep the role longer than a year! There is no minimum requirement, but we would prefer some activity for shop and customer plot and RP purposes. As Wingleaders can directly impact Threadfall, and help encourage RP and development, we DO prefer folks who are active as opposed to those who do bare minimum or aren't much around. For Wingleaders that aren't RPed or whose owners go inactive, or those who just haven't done much, the shop has a right to ICly demote them back to wingrider or move them to an NPC wing.

Demotions happen because here may be metaplots and shop actions that involve individual wings. It is never fun to be a wingrider in a Wing where there is no active leadership. This is the first checkup to see the status of our Wings! As we plan on having active Threadfall at least twice this year, some metaplot shenanigans, and some secret things, we are hoping to find folks who are interested in RPing their character in the shop.

ICly, leadership can change whenever the Weyrleader decides to do so. Nothing is ever secure, so it wouldn't necessarily be a huge surprise if positions of power change. OOCly we also want to make sure other people are given an opportunity to play/write Wingleaders, especially if a person isn't around to use them.

What do I get to do if I win one?
If you win a Wingleader role, your character is granted all the immediate IC benefits that come along with the rank. OOCly, you are allowed to run Wing Events, Wing Drills, Wing Games, Wing Competitions with other Wings, etc. You ultimately can kind of run the Wing however you'd like... Short of doing something that's against the shop's rules, or starts mucking up our plots, you're in the driver seat. Your character can reprimand unruly wingriders, can take concerns up with the Weyrleader or Flightleader, can be as lenient or as strict as you think the Wing should be run, and can plot out duties for the Wing to fulfill. Should you have wingriders that get in trouble or cause trouble, it will likely come back to your Wingleader who can choose a proper punishment. If it's bad enough, the Weyrleadership may need to go to your Wingleader for double admonishment, etc. Obviously, if your Wingleader has a problem with how things are going, then you can take it up with Weyrleadership.

If Wingriders have problems, then they have to go to their Wingleaders to resolve it, especially if it's something they can't resolve themselves.

Wingleaders also tend to have a lot more responsibility and work than Wingriders, so their schedules, and routines will definitely change. There are a lot of meetings, a lot of research, a lot of crap that happens, so your characters lives might well change.

While the position and role and running of the individual Wings are ultimately up to the Wingleader, if you go crazy, get out of hand, or suddenly start trying to spout anarchy and chaos, ICly and OOCly we may have to remove your character from the position even before the year is up. IC Action = IC Consequence, so obviously causing IC trouble "for OOC fun" could result in both IC and OOC consequence. Neither High Reaches Weyr nor Western Weyr are going to d**k around when riders lives are on the line.

But this doesn't mean you guys can't have fun with those assigned to your wings. You can do Wing Specific group RPs, or individual RPs.

Wingleaders who need new Wingseconds may get to choose their Wingseconds after the contest is up. As we're changing this and keeping this open for both Wingleaders and Wingseconds, we will be opening up the position here, but if we don't get much interest or enough to cover the plentiful roles of Wingseconds, Wingleaders with openings may run contests to get new blood in power.

TLDR: OOCly we will open up Wingsecond roles-- those who have Wingsecond and want to try to keep the position will reapply; we will also open it up for new faces to put forth a character for consideration. At the end of the contest, Cheri and Uta will decide on who stays and who goes.

Wingseconds who are already placed in a wing and who are tapped for another year of service will stay in that wing. Wingseconds promoted to Wingleader might well get placed in a different wing. New Wingseconds will be placed into wings as Cheri and Uta see fit. Any "holes" that need filling will be open for Wingleaders to run contests to fill the positions.

This role isn't meant to be a pressured role, as activity is encouraged but optional. But we do want to be honest about what we'll be hopeful for. If you have no interest in the position or your character taking on its responsibilities, then if you win, your Wingleader could get demoted and replaced next year.

Weyr Specific Rules
As Western Weyr and High Reaches Weyr are quite different, they have strict rules on who will be allowed to become Wingleaders or Wingseconds.

High Reacches Weyr
1. Wingleaders will always be bronzeriders. Period.
2. Wingseconds will only be bronze or brownriders, no matter what. Blue or greenriders would not be approved and would likely get the Wingleader demoted immediately.
3. This position is highly coveted, short of Flightleader or Weyrleader. It is often that Wingleaders tend to be in a better position to become Weyrleader down the road. There is a bit of fame that goes with the position at High Reaches Weyr. They're almost a bit like rockstars and often treated reverently.
4. Wingleaders get larger quarters, fresh fruit sent to their weyrs everyday, their own private bathing chambers, their own offices, and are treated akin to Master Craftsmen. They might have more sway, and their thoughts and opinions might well be considered by D'mon.
5. Wingleaders are handpicked by Weyrleader D'mon... and demoted entirely by him, too. Staying in his good graces is a wise idea if you wan to continue being a Wingleader.
6. Wingleaders need to have been at the Weyr at least 5 Turns and proven themselves competent in Threadfall. Their dragons need to be at least 5 Turns old--sorry weyrlings and young bloods! It's nothing against your ideas, but they want riders who have a little bit more experience fighting Thread, as well as riders who have proven loyalty to the Weyr.

D'mon is likely going to look at individuals who are 30 Turns+ for Wingleader. However, it's loyalty to the Weyr, its tradition, and its current leadership (as well as their skills/leadership/personality/trustworthiness to keep individuals alive) that will be the deciding factor.

Please refrain from making individuals who are going to be more Western minded! D'mon is not going to promote men who are known to be a pain-in-his-a** with their bitching about color equality. He's the Weyrleader. They can change things up once they get that title--for now, he needs Wingleaders he can trust. If you already have a Wingleader who goes against the grain, feel free to have them reapply for their position--they'll be grandfathered in from the last event if they are given another year of service. :3 Those who won in the last round who went against the mold or don't follow these rules will NOT have it held against them this time. So no worries there!

7. Wingseconds need to have been at the Weyr at least 3 Turns and proven themselves capable and trustworthy. Their dragons need to be at least 3 Turns old--sorry weyrlings! It's nothing against your ideas, but they want to at least make sure you're seasoned in Threadfall and capable; as well as to ensure that they are comfortable at the Weyr. For bronzes this is an opportunity to potentially practice a leadership role in case they are interested in trying to move up the ranks; for brownriders, this IS a time to prove themselves as this is their traditional spot, and currently, the highest they can go.

Western Weyr
1. Wingleaders can be of any color sans gold provided they show gumption and initiative to want to lead.
2. Wingseconds can be of any color sans gold provided they want to lead.
3. It is an honored position in Western, though they might not be as revered as in High Reaches Weyr. They're important, respected, admired, but there isn't any more fanfare than anyone else usually.
4. Wingleaders can stay in their own weyr or move to one closer to the kitchens/offices of the Weyr. It's a bit larger and cushier, but it's not expected of them. They'll work closely with Hestina.
5. Wingleaders are suggested by Hestina, but ultimately voted in by a council. This means the Weyrleader can't just pick willy-nilly or punish a competent and desired leader just because they don't like them. Wingleaders chosen by Western are there because the Weyr as a whole thinks them a good fit.
6. There is no real age that a Wingleader or Wingsecond need be, though Hestina and the Council will probably prefer to give Wingleaders and Wingseconds who have a proven trackrecord of excellence and a desire to lead. Adults are preferred--it's doubtful they would select someone younger than 20 Turns to the role but who knows? It's Western. They're already thought to be off their rocker. Weyrlings cannot apply.

Wingleaders & Wingseconds will have a direct impact on future PC Threadfall games we run! Furthermore, we are planning on giving those with ranking positions some perks to benefit those in their Wings and other players in the shop in general--but that's a work-in-progress and not yet finished. :3 So there are benefits of being active with a Wingleader/Wingsecond and reasons we encourage activity!

How to Enter

There are three ways which you can enter for a possible Wingleader or Wingsecond! Please keep in mind your riders must be from either Western or High Reaches Weyr! It wouldn't make sense for D'mon or R'mor to choose an unaffiliated rider or someone newly joined who doens't yet know how to properly fight Thread.

  • Submit a Pre-Existing Character / Transfer Character
The first way is to use one of your pre-existing characters. Fill out the entry and prompt from your characters point of view and wait to see if they're promoted. There is no age minimum, but your character will have to be quite impressive if they're young or just out from weyrling training. Remember, if you're trying for High Reaches Weyr you'll need a bronze rider for Wingleader roles, or a bronze or brown for Wingsecond. If you're trying for Western any non-gold color will work. We will allow for transfers to enter, whether or not their profile is finished.

  • Submit a New Character without Prexisting Art
The second way is to fill out the entry form with a brand new character. If you're trying out for High Reaches Weyr you'll have to make the Wingleader a bronzerider, or your Wingsecond a bronze or brownrider only -- I'm sorry, but D'mon is set in his ways. If you're trying for Western you can choose any color sans gold. If you win, your character will get a dragon designed by one of our talented colorists--but you don't get a say on the final design.

  • Re-Submit a Wingleader or Wingsecond
If you already have a Wingleader or a Wingsecond, and you want to try to keep the position or move them up, PLEASE REAPPLY. You will have a different form to fill out, and if you haven't already posted in the Wingleader/Wingsecond Activity Check Thread you are encouraged to do so now while this event runs! Reapplying doesn't guarantee you will get to keep the position! We might choose a new face to become Wingleader to share the love; we might keep someone relatively inactive if we don't get too many entries. You just won't know, and we won't know, until we see who has entered!

Also, if you have a Wingsecond who might want to rise up to become a Wingleader, they are allowed to enter. If they aren't selected for Wingleader, we will still consider keeping them as a Wingsecond--so trying to move up in rank won't necessarily hurt them.

That said, there is a possibility not all Wingseconds will automatically keep their roles, so you still might get cut no matter what.

You may enter as many characters as you'd like, in either Weyr! No guarantees on who we'll promote and who we won't!

The Wings

We'll be considering Twelve Wingleaders, assuming we get twelve fitting entries; and twenty four Wingseconds (omg please make Wingseconds). We might look for twelve Wingseconds so each wing has at least one active PC wingsecond, so who knows. Reshuffling might occur. We do reserve the right to choose less then that, and will either make NPC Wingleaders, or try to fill the spot later.

Just because you enter doesn't mean a guaranteed win! The profile you write has to be a good fit, and make sense for D'mon or the Council to pick them! Keep that in mind when you're writing your entry or putting forth a character! Also, just because you did a few RPs here or there with your ranking persona doesn't mean they're going to keep their position; we may want to give someone else a shot for this next year.

High Reaches Weyr will be firm on its color bias. We've got Western Weyr for all your "fight the color bias" needs. I apologize if this cramps your fun, but the heart of the Weyr isn't going to change overnight, and D'mon and Zheria aren't the sort to start changing their tune. They truly believe in the traditions of the Weyrs, and that means some riders just won't have the same opportunities for rising up in rank available to them.

Western Weyr: One thing to remember is if you make a Wingleader or Wingsecond who is white, green, or blue, they are still limited by their dragons stamina. They will still only be able to fight according to their color limits i.e. Whites can only fight in the Low Altitude Wing--otherwise they are in the Queen's Wing--so there might be times they rely fully on their Seconds! Blues and Greens can only fight half a Threadfall so again, that means they may very well need to rely on their Wingseconds.

One thing to note: We also cannot allow for all white wingleaders and wingseonds in a Wing. They literally cannot fly the mid- and high-altitude wings, so could not function.

Here are the PC Wings we're hoping to supply with a Wingleader and Wingseconds! Please note that Uta/Cheri will assign winners to the wings! Uta and Cheri can enter if they wish, but I assure you, we're not just going to auto-allow ourselves to win. Please have more faith in in us than that, haha.

You may enter as many characters as you like but we're not promising they'll all win, or any of them will. We do want to share the love with those interested. We also want to make sure that you guys don't burn out as they are being given away under the hopes that they WILL be RPed.

For anyone submitting a brand new character, please note you'll need them approved through approvals even if you do win.

The Form

If you're interested in trying out for a Wingleader or Wingsecond, or wish to defend your current role (or rise up), all you need to do is fill out the appropriate form! You may enter as many entries as you wish, but they must be for different characters. If you don't win in the contest and are creating a new persona, you may quest for the character or try for them as just a wingrider. :3

  • You may edit your entries until the contest closes.

  • You may not proxy for other people.

  • These roles are not RP required but we genuinely would prefer that those trying out try to give their Wings a little life. Activity will be a consideration, especially as it will benefit others during PC Threadfall games, and possible other happenings.

  • If you want to keep your Wingleader in the position longer than a year, you'll need to log activity with them under the Activity Check page.

  • While we plan on giving current Wingleaders and Seconds at least a year-long position, keep in mind if your character does something majorly stupid ICly that would warrant being dismissed, then we can switch things up as needed. (Chances are the Wingleader would get spoken to or given ultimatums by the Weyrleadership, so you know, you're probably just fine with whatever plots or trouble you put them in.)

Rider's Personality:
From the day of his birth, H'ral has always been a light-hearted sort of fellow. He loves being near and around his people, entertaining the notion that it's not so hard to make friends if you just try. He's always ready with a smile and a hand, even in the roughest of times, knowing well that something like that can change the course of someone's day. It's rare to see H'ral without a smile, unless he feels like something's gone a little out of place...but that's neither here nor there. He tends to be a bit of a joker, as well, often making light of things that most people might find a bit too much. He entertains himself, and he thinks, the masses.

H'ral is a father first and foremost, a man who's always going to look after the people that matter. If he were permitted, H'ral would probably take the entire weyr under wing, make sure they were taken care of. He has a drive to ensure that no one feels left behind, there with a steadying hand, and calm word. He is calm and kind, usually looking out for the people that are in his hand. Why would he do anything but? They're already fighting things that are rough, why make it much harder? He will always sit down and listen so that he knows what to do, who to take care of, and who to press down on. There is, after all, a difference between who you can coddle, and who you need to be more firm with.

H'ral tends towards speaking his mind, not the sort to ever hold back for the sake of rank or politeness. There's no curb to a tongue that tells the truth. He'll even tell the truth about himself. He's been known to say just what he thinks, regardless of who he looses his tongue on, that includes those he works with and under. True, he's doing it out of his own best interest, and that of those around him, that doesn't change the fact that he's aggressive and blunt. He also tends to prefer to stick to his schedule, and to the rules that have always been laid before him. There's a pattern, and following it is in everyone's best interest.

His tendency towards wanting the best for others can lead him to be overprotective. H'ral has a need to ensure that people are taken care of, and will go through whatever means necessary to ensure that this happens. He has been known to pull people out of the way of a punch, and take it himself, and has a bad habit of jumping in even where he's not wanted.

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond:
I haven't been able to OOCly do much due to my health, though I've started to pick up. ICly, Bahrain would've gone through a lot of drills and training, making sure they were ready for everything.

How do they see themselves and their position? i.e. Do they think they're a god among men? Do they think they've let their Wing down? Are they unsure? Neutral? Apathetic?

How long have they been Wingleader/Second?
ICly, not sure
OOCly, since the last Wingleader contest. A little over a year?? I think

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position?
H'ral is PROUD of his Wing, and of what he's done. He's proud of every single one of his riders, and still has a lot left to give to the Weyr and to his Wing before he's ready to step down. Every one of Bahrain is like his family.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? i.e. do they love it, do they hate it, do they object to the local politics, etc.
He adores Bahrain, and Western. He feels like they need better training so that they can be fully ready for every situation, including social ones with people that are not used to their weyr's politics. After all, there was the HR incident, and he firmly believes such a situation shouldn't have happened. At all.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt?
Work more with their Wing, make sure that they feel prepared. Take more time to speak to wingmates one on one and meet individual needs on top of the needs of the group. There's much to make sure of, and much he needs to make sure is covered.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role?
More activity within the wing for sure. More drill games, more one on one action. I've been neglecting due to muse fickleness and RL s**t, but I have time now.

How active have you been with the character?
He only has one RP for Bahrain, and I am fully willing to admit it's my fault. I had an issue with RL and with the muse. I'm ready to get my activity level back up, and make sure that things get off the ground with Bahrain ASAP.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: T'mor
Rider's Age: 28
Dragon's Name: Phylideth
Dragon's Age: 6
Dragon Color: Brown
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? Western Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingleader of Yokohama
What role are they looking for? Wingleader

Rider's Personality:
No, you may not have any cookies before you’ve finished your spinach! If there was someone you’d call Mr. Dad, it’s T’mor; excellent with children and firelizards. He’s not easy to walk over, however, and will expect all responsibilities that have been divvied around – his or not – are taken care of. In fact, T’mor is a man that is very reliable, seeming to actually enjoy having an agenda of work to do.

In the name of all bad-habits, though, he’s a late-sleeper and sometimes it takes anxious-to-get-going-at-the-day Phylideth to get him rolled out of bed and out of his ‘not-a-morning-person’ mentality. A good cup of klah and some bleary minutes pass though and then he’s ready to start scooping up children and running around on the beach.

Given his affinity for chilluns, T’mor isn’t the type to take heavy risks when he has a responsibility for someone else, more aware of how his actions weigh on others,. He tends to be a guy who will take a hit for the team and he doesn’t mind coming home a little bruised. Despite his adoration of children, he has expectations for them to stand on their own feet and fight their own battles, never running to the rescue unnecessarily, having the patience to sit such things out without getting anxious, though if this was developed from childhood or from having a fussy brown could be debated.

If you can’t carry your own weight, T’mor isn’t going to volunteer to do it, though when asked he doesn’t exactly have the heart to turn someone down (especially if there’s a sob-story attached). He does have his limits at how long he’ll let his favors be used before he gets upset, though for ‘T'mor’ upset is telling the classroom there are no more glue rights until he peels all of the glue that’s been overused on one project off of it and is never more than a frown and a final ‘No’ for a while.

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: T'mor was promoted to Flight Leader fairly recently, overall his Wing has seen some decent growth and he's working hard with his new recruits!

How do they see themselves and their position? He must be doing something right, but he knows he's capable of pushing himself and his wingriders higher. This is what he's wanted and he wants to continue proving that it wasn't a mistake.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? IC AND OOCly about 1.5 years/since the positions were first made available.

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? T'mor wanted to be a Wingleader almost immediately in his Weyrling class and has found the position to be everything he hoped it would be. Yokohama is his family and he is very proud of what all of his riders - and new recruits - have done in their time under him. Like a proud father, he wants to see them keep growing and he wants to be a backbone they can rise with.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? T'mor loves his position as a Wingleader and more than that, Western Weyr is his home - it has his full loyalty and their leaders have his entire trust.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? He may be the Wingleader, but the entire wing reflects upon the Weyr. Certain incidents during his first year have reminded him of this and he needs to push more to remind his Wingriders that they are just as important - and what they do is just as important. This isn't to say he has never thought this, but rather it has become more obvious that the scale of this hasn't been as emphasized and he wants it to be.

He needs to be more active on such things, rather than reactive entirely after it has happened, unfortunately.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? I'd like to do more of my prompt threads for my wing because I *know* it's hard to do group stuff (especially when there are so many wings with which to do group stuff) that 'at your own pace' things would be kind of nice so it doesn't feel overwhelming.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: Z'haq
Rider's Age: 30
Dragon's Name: Eorawth
Dragon's Age: 14
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? Western Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingleader
What role are they looking for? Wingleader

~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
Z'haq is definitely not your traditional bronzerider! Happy, good-natured, friendly and self-effacing, he lacks the arrogance of many of his fellows. He possesses a natural leadership ability, though he'd be the last to acknowledge it. He often ends up "taking charge" when things go south, just because someone has to -- he's not the least bit bossy, just very good at crisis management.

Z'haq is one of those people who has absolutely no fear -- again, this doesn't come from a place of arrogance, but rather from not understanding precisely what it is he's supposed to be afraid of or why. He has good common sense and a healthy respect for things that may harm him, like Thread of course, but he doesn't fear them. He won't hesitate to help someone in trouble -- he'll dive right in to help them without a thought of any potential danger to himself.

Z'haq loves the sea; he's lived near or on the sea his entire life, and is very happy to be near it at Western. He has a good degree of skill in seamanship, despite never officially becoming a seacrafter; he can navigate by the stars and coastal landmarks, rig sails, climb around in rigging, make rope and tie knots, and has even manned the tiller on occasion. He had a close, tight-knit relationship with the crew of his father's ship, which he's been able to transfer to his wingmates, who find in him a steadfast and loyal comrade. His Wing is his new family (and his Flight his extended family), and he's very protective of those he considers family. He's also protective of those he loves, principal among those being Teliresa of gold Lyraeth. He thinks she's the best.

He's not perfect, mind you. He has some residual confidence issues; his self-effacing humility isn't an act. He doesn't feel that he's quite Good Enough yet to earn the kind of attention he gets as a bronzerider or a Wingleader. He has a very slow-burning but bad temper; anyone who messes with his friends is liable to find themselves with his fist in their face without any warning. (He rarely gets into fights now, as he has his dragon to think about, but it still happens on rare occasion.) And he's a bit of a pickpocket (he always gives back what he nicks, though). And a klah addict. And he cheats at dice.

Z'haq learned leadership at his ship captain father's side, and he carries that through into the Wing; he runs the Furies like a sailing vessel, where everyone knows their job and works together like a well-oiled machine. Still, he runs a fairly loose "ship" as far as his Wing goes. There are rules to be followed, of course, and everyone in the wing has a job to do, but downtime is party time! Do your chores, then celebrate that you're still alive!

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: He's kept his Wingmates alive, and that should count for something XD ICly, he had been acting as Wingsecond of the Furies until the Wingleader was killed during a 'Fall and he was made Wingleader.

How do they see themselves and their position? Z'haq sees himself as a laid-back ship's captain. He respects those under him, some of whom have been fighting Thread much longer than he has, and both expects and requests that they do their absolute best in everything -- because they are not only representing the Furies, but Western Weyr. He likes to think his Wingmates like and respect him too.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? He's been Wingleader since 9/4/17 OOC, just over 2 Turns IC

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? Z'haq really enjoys being Wingleader. He considers those in his Wing to be his surrogate family, as well as his "crew" -- and he wants everyone to succeed as dragonriders and come back from Threadfall alive and in one piece. He believes he is contributing to the protection of the Weyr, the Western Continent, and all of Pern as Wingleader.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? Z'haq loves Western, and he loves the Furies. He is trying to make Flame's Fury into the Wing everyone wants to get tapped into!

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? Maybe he'd be a bit tougher on those in his Wing. He's been fairly laissez-faire with discipline thus far, which is a leadership method he picked up from his ship's captain father, but what he didn't realize as a kid was that his dad was just as tough on his crew as he was easy-going. Some people need a firmer hand and/or guidance in order to do their job to the best of their ability; this is something he's learning from his interviews with the new members of his Wing.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? I'd try and figure out how to put together Wing games for everyone in the Furies and make more Wing-only open threads for parties and such. More activity in the Wing!

How active have you been with the character? Z'haq's Wingleader Activity Post I haven't done as much actual Wing stuff with him as I'd have liked to, like I haven't run any Wing games or anything, but I have been active with him in stories in a Wingleader capacity, and I would really like to keep him as Wingleader of Flame's Fury!

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: V'lik
Rider's Age: 47
Dragon's Name: Raith
Dragon's Age: 32
Dragon Color: Blue
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? Western Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingleader
What role are they looking for? Wingleader
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: A sincere hard worker, V'lik does not know how to offer anything less then 110% when he works at a task. He will not waste any part of the day and has been known to train with his dragon, and on occasion his wingmates, well after the sun has set. A day will not be truly accomplished unless something is achieved. While this might make others feel he is a tough individual to impress or be around, it is rather the opposite. V'lik takes great pride in seeing those who ask him for assistance slowly begin to improve on those sweeping dives. Or getting into formation just a half-mark faster than their previous attempt. He's just not very good at voicing this.

V'lik will be quite strict on himself and any others that he will be forced to rely upon. This could be fellow wingmates or weyrfolk. He expects a lot out of his fellow riders and will try to push them to their limits, encouraging them to rise up beyond even that. He believes that if he is able to push himself further, then anyone can do it too, if they set their mind to it. Quitting is not an option. Thread will not wait for anyone. If they are to succeed, then they must be ready for anything. Doing less will only result in the loss of even more lives and riders.

While his expectations may seem impossible and his ways harsh, V'lik is a good man at heart. He truly cares about those he and his dragon must protect, knowing that they are not fully prepared to combat Thread like dragonriders once were. They allowed themselves to become lazy. Did not school themselves in maintaining drills meant to keep all of Pern safe. This has become a passionate drive for why he will not let himself or his dragon ever be considered lazy or unprepared. Now, he just has to convince the rest of the weyr to feel the same.

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: While he hasn't been a Wingleader for long, V'lik has managed to pull together a moderately adequate Wing that he's proud of. He's kept them alive and taught them what it means to be a dragon rider.

How do they see themselves and their position? He is a teacher of the Weyr that serves to provide R'mor with the best possible Wings to send out in battle against Thread.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? OOCly he's been a Wingleader since September 2017, which I think is ICly about 1.5 - 2 turns?

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? V'lik wants to continue to teach the new (and in some cases, older) rider's to learn how to push themselves to their absolute best and not fear their age old enemy. He has found himself proud of the Wing he's been working with, seeing them grow in character. He would be honored to continue as a Wingleader.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? V'lik still feels strongly about his Weyr and has been equally impressed with his Wing. He's also still quite embarrassed and disappointed at the way Western rider's acted during the double clutch at High Reaches and has been making sharding sure that none of his wing act like such dimglows.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? V'lik has come to realize that he does need assistance in leading a Wing and can't take on all the work himself. He'll start to rely on his Wingseconds a bit more, giving them equal amounts of work. He's also starting to communicate much more openly with his fellow Wingleaders and would continue to grow in this aspect of sharing.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? I have been working, slowly (crai snails pace more like), on developing some fun wing activities to try out. I'd really enjoy finishing them and seeing what other members of the wing think! Would also like to try and get V'lik some more development with his wingmates.

How active have you been with the character? Not nearly as active as I wanted to be. V'lik Activity Post. I don't have as much time for RP anymore and the small bit of time I DID have online was spent working as staff in another shop. I'd still like to work on developing V'lik a bit more with the small times of RP I have when off work for school breaks.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: A'dras
Rider's Age: 44
Dragon's Name: Gareth
Dragon's Age: 24
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved
What role do they currently hold? Wingleader
What role are they looking for? Wingleader
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
[+]Honorable: At a young age A’dras adopted his own code of honor that he follows to this day. He respects the elders without any question about what they may have done in their youth, respects those who earn it through their actions and those whose loyalty never wavers. Children, from birth to 12 turns, are innocent and cannot be held accountable for any of their actions upon the public sphere it is their parents who have failed. He will protect the innocents at any cost to himself. A’dras does not hold others accountable to his honor code but he will not get involved in things that go against it, unless of course his loyalty might be called into question.

[+]Loyal: As every soldier will tell you the men you fight alongside become your family, although A’dras does believe that, he is not loyal to each and every rouge. A’dras is hard to gain the loyalty of as he must feel like there is a reason if he must sacrifice himself for the other. A’dras can be considered a true soldier as the man or woman above him has his upmost respect and loyalty. They do not have to gain this as it is inherently given because A’dras believes that they are put there for a reason, they have already proven themselves. He is well aware that there will be times that his loyalty and honor will cause turmoil but when it comes to those he is loyal too he will not hesitate to do what he can to help them even if it might go against his honor code. Once you have gotten close enough for A’dras to feel loyalty to you this is never changed no matter what happens.

[+]Protective: A’dras is very protective when it comes to his son Caderyn. As Caderyn is the only son that A’dras has he tries to do what he can to help the boy. This does go into younger children that A’dras comes across even if they are not his own. Although he is not protective enough to put his life on the line for people he does not respect or that he feels have no right to be where they are.

[-]Overprotective: Because he is overprotective of Caderyn, A’dras has allowed his own life to change for protecting his son. A’dras has attacked men for saying horrible things about his son and he has even killed a man because of a threat. He doesn’t hesitate to take care of his son in ways that he can and doesn’t seem to care about the consequences to himself as long as Caderyn is still safe. It is one of the reasons, since the return of Thread, that A'dras has returned to a Weyr, after spending most of his time as a mercenary, he plans on watching over Caderyn.

[-]Proud: Like many men A’dras is a very proud individual. He does not take kindly to his honor being called into question, even if he has gone against his code. If someone calls him out, especially in front of others, A’dras will challenge them to a fight. When it comes to this A’dras prefers to fight either unarmed or using swords instead of fighting with dragons. There are times when, depending on how much he feels he has been slighted, that A’dras is not against killing the person he is fighting.

[-]Ruthless: As said before A’dras seems to go into a different mindset when he is fighting. There are even times at this point when A’dras is known to continue fighting and only stop when snapped out of it. When this happens A’dras becomes very sullen especially when he attacks or goes after innocents. He has started to feel a need to fight and slip into a ruthless and unfeeling sense of mind to do what he needs to. Being ruthless in battle is how A’dras has begun to cope with following the orders that his superiors give him when they might go against his honor code. A’dras is well aware that the more he allows himself to slip in and out of a ruthless mindset, the easier it will be for him to bring harm to those around him. He is still able to stop himself from reaching that point but as time goes on, there is no telling what may happen.

[-]Closed-Off: A’dras prefers to keep to himself a lot of the times but when he does talk he comes off as very sullen. He is not very happy go lucky because of a lot of the things he has been through and seen in his life. Cynical by nature because of this you can always count on A’dras to give you the honest details and not lie to make everything sound nicer. He isn’t normally seen with a smile on his face and it isn’t normal to see him sitting around chatting and just having fun. Most of his free time is either spent with his dragon Gareth or working out and training. Although A’dras does seem very unhappy he enjoys spending time with Gareth, working out, training and sending time with some of the younger weyrlings. He enjoys being around the children even if he is teaching them how to fight because it allows him to be near kids who remind him of his son

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: A'dras was recently promoted to Flight Leader of the Nature's Fury Flight. He also tries to maintain a 'family' type closeness between his Wingmembers, and is focusing on getting the new recruits up and going. He was knocked out for a couple of months when the flu struck High Reaches and left Hurricane Wing under the guidance of his Wingseconds at that time.

How do they see themselves and their position? A'dras views it as an honor and a role that deserves a humble man as well as someone who will do their best to keep their Wing safe and guided. He tries to maintain it as a well oiled machine and doesn't see himself as being above any of his wing members. He is the leader, but they are the force behind it all.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? IC/OOC: 1.5 Turns.

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? He would love to keep the position he has as he feels like he is finally at a place where he can contribute more then just as a fighter of Thread. Being a leader, taking care of those underneath him, it's something he feels he fits into perfectly.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? Hurricane Wing are his family as much as his actual family. He sees them as companions and will not leave anyone behind to struggle or suffer on their own.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? A'dras wants to focus more on teamwork as well as flying at the higher altitudes while trying to keep formations. It is something they seem to struggle upon.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? Get my ideas for wing drills actually out there and stop second guessing myself. I haven't been as active with him as I had originally hoped and I'm pushing that aside and making myself work with make sure he is available for anyone in his Wing.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name:Nimueh
Rider's Age:41
Dragon's Name:Mharlith
Dragon's Age:21
Dragon Color:Brown
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingsecond
What role are they looking for? Happy to stay as Wingsecond given that browns riders(especially female brown riders) aren't expected to exceed that, however if the opportunity arose she would like to lead her own wing one day.
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
Nimueh is one of the people that seem to get on with just about everyone. She's almost always smiling and seems happy to see you. She is also highly adaptable to the situation. With younger more boisterous riders she can be light hearted and playful, thanks to her time as a healer she has quite a twisted black sense of humour that plays well with the younger crowd.
With older riders or those that are more stiff she is polite and respectful slowly working on loosening them up and building a relationship. she is able to do this because she is a very accurate judge of character. A keen intelligence and good observation means she usually has a good handle on the type of person she is dealing with within a few moments of meeting them.

Saying that she has to be careful with how far she takes her gift as at times it can boarder on unnerving and push people away as she is 'getting in their heads' and trying to psychoanalyses even outside of office hours. She is also very good at what she does because she genuinely cares. She will always go out of her way to help people and she always has time to talk. She is understanding and forgiving when it comes to the failures of others because she has been there and she has needed to be forgiven.

As a result she will put herself in harms way to save others and she has burnt herself out on more than one occasion with overwork. Those that know her have to force her to stop and take five minutes for herself. Or she will work till she is ready to collapse and then binge on anything sweet and a good amount of drink, pass out for a day then be back at it the next day. Not healthy. So the best thing to do at this point is to send her on a long patrol with her dragon to force her away from it all. This can be easier said than done because if she feels she is still needed at the weyr she will fight to stay and carry on working.

The other area when her fierce and stubborn streak shows itself is with her patients, if she has ordered light work and bed rest, that is what is going to happen unless you want a two hour lecture and a dragon guard. The same goes for any senior weyr staff that try and push a fragile wing rider or candidate before she feels they are ready. If she has too she will ignore the orders of a wingleader to preserve the health of her patients.

During times of exasperation with someone she can also stray into sarcastic and biting comments.

However she does have one way to blow of steam and de-stress that is not immediately apparent. She is very promiscuous. She is not an open flirt but if anyone shows interest(who isn't a current patient) she will happily have their pants off five minutes later. Her beloved brown is also ready to chase any green or gold going and Nimueh will very rarely ,if ever try and fight flight lust if there is a ready willing and available partner. As such any partner she had could not expect a monogamous relationship. She has never shown interest in holding down a long term partner. The free and open sex life is one of the only hold overs from wild party years when she was younger. She has broken a few hearts over the years.

Nimueh also had to monitor her own impulse control, being a trained mindhealer she is all too aware of her own failings but she can still swing to excess at time, when she drinks, she will often binge to the point of black out if someone doesn't stop her and she will eat more than she needs if offered. Especially if anything sweet is involved.

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: Nimueh was brought in as wingsecond because both the wingleader and primary wingsecond where hard men of hard discipline. That did not mean that they did not care about the wing and they pushed their riders hard to fight thread but under mounting pressure cracks are bound to appear.
Balance was needed and Nimueh is that balance, she is the open presence that is always ready to hear someone out. Given her training she is also an expert at spotting any warning signs that someone might be struggling under the pressure. Working with the healers she knows she is also trying to develop training exercise that test a dragons body in the right way to pin point any physical weakness that needs targeting and training.

How do they see themselves and their position? To put it very simply she is wing Mom. She looks after all her riders and listens to them but she is also the law in her wing with enough character and confidence to be firm when she needs to.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? Only about half a turn/year.

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? Honestly I want to set up more ORP's I have been holding back because the IC wingleader has been absent and I didn't wanna jump the gun without talking to them first. However if the shake up happens I hope I can help revitalise wing rps. Also she is not a rider that cares to much to involve themselves in politics but Nim does think every rider has the same value and she would make her wing as open and welcome to all colours as she could. Especially female riders who are suppressed (since she's been there)

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? Nim will always be loyal to the weyr, it was her mothers weyr, it is the weyr that gave her Mharlith and there is no greater duty than to stop the literal end of the world from thread fall which High reaches was most prepared for. As for her current wing, although she cares for them and will always be happy to stay, if she was given a wingleader post of another wing she'd jump at the chance. It is the weyr at large she works for and the more she can do for it in any wing the better. After all, every rider at HR is family to her.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? Now she has more experience she'd like to lead more wing training sessions.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? More group ORP's for the wing, also keep an eye on how many active members we have in the wing. For reference of future rps

How active have you been with the character? https://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=25280547
I know I haven't been that active and I apologise. I do want to push Nim more into an active leader role in future I just didn't want to step on the toes of her current wing leader and fellow wing second.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: V'kenti
Rider's Age: 30
Dragon's Name: Takarath
Dragon's Age: 12
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingleader of Tornado Wing
What role are they looking for? Wingleader
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:

One of V'kenti's defining features is his ability to work in a team. He has a certain "can do" attitude that leads him to strive to do everything he can. If something is needed, he'll likely be one of the first to volunteer. As a bronze rider, he knows some things he's just going to have to do, regardless of if it's pleasant or not, and he's okay with that. Better him, who won't balk at something, than someone who would have issues getting the job done. This does not mean that he is immoral, and there are certainly a few things he may hesitate to do (very few) but in the end if he's ordered to do so, he'll do what's needed. In this way, he is very easy to teach. To him, there's no such thing as "you can't teach an old dog new tricks." He's not old to any extent but will never miss the opportunity to learn something. He can often be found with his nose in a book which has side effects of it's own.

With his nose always in a book and his general quiet nature, it often makes him a loner. While he has no problem working with people, things don't normally translate well outside of the job. He would tend to withdraw inside himself and Taka when some things get awkward. V'kenti can be a little over-attentive to things people say and do. He'll over think it and then it may be in the back of his head as he thinks about various things they could have meant. Acting on these thoughts is a completely different thing. They'll often stay just in his head as his job comes first and foremost but it does contribute to why he tends to just be alone.

In recent history, V'kenti and Takarath have bonded with a similar rider and dragon: Lestenna of gold Uridith. In, and through, her he has found a much more sensitive side with which he can have his work-a-holic lifestyle but also a semblance of a family. V'kenti's and Lestennas growing relationship as well as bonding with a few special young riders has allowed him to see that sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too, so to say.

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: What has he or she accomplished during their time in this position? What have they achieved?

How do they see themselves and their position? i.e. Do they think they're a god among men? Do they think they've let their Wing down? Are they unsure? Neutral? Apathetic?

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? IC and OOC. I assume it's often only 1.5 years/Turns, but some might have it written longer in their history ICly.

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position?

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? i.e. do they love it, do they hate it, do they object to the local politics, etc.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt?

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role?

How active have you been with the character? Feel free to link RPs here or link to the Activity Check thread so I can take a look. You may defend your activity level if you'd like... We understand it's not an RP required position, but we also do like the characters to get some activity. It helps keep the shop going and encourages RP when Important People are available!

Rider's Name: Cortun
Rider's Age: 38 Turns
Dragon's Name: Menyherth
Dragon's Age: 21 Turns (3553.09.02)
Dragon Color: White
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? Western Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Contest
Will you need a colorist to create art for this character? Y
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: From the time Cortun’s eyes snap open in the morning to when they stubbornly drift shut in the late hours of the evening, his mind is in a constant state of work. From an early age, he was an early riser--and he takes every advantage of all hours of the day. He sees things in a more calculating way, of how to get the most efficiency out of a task or job. His grandfather’s teachings stuck firm--do good onto the world, expect nothing in return. Taking that to heart, he puts himself out to his fullest--for his dragon, his wingriders, and his Weyr.

His personal weyr is full of chalkboards and papers--a cluttered orchestrated chaos of a mess that only he seems to make sense of. From everything to wing patterns to charting his day off to be the most productive. It’s a downside to his drive is for his mind to wander if something is not particularly holding his attention--time for a scratch out and rewrite. His mind stays on task for his duties, mind. But his off duty is spent bouncing from task to task, covering himself in chalk dust again and again as he bounces between ideas and diagrams.

It isn’t without fault, however. Cortun is only one man, and even after impressing just as an industrious of a dragon in Menyherth, accidents still happen. Even best intentions can go awry. Yet he pushes himself to think ahead of his plans. Cortun pulls out a chess board just to attempt to think four steps ahead of his current move. But it leaves him with a deep sense of anxiety. He wants to help, to better everyone around him so that they create a more cohesive unit to fight thread.

A terrible streak of recklessness runs throughout Cortun. He isn’t afraid to get hurt for the sake of something going right. It could lend its way to self-sacrificing, yet Cortun swears he would keep self preservation in mind. He swears! Yet it doesn’t stop him from needing to leap between his wingmate and a clump of thread--nor does Menyherth egging him on to /do it/. Their wingmates are their new family, after all. The people and dragons that Cortun may just die beside--why not give himself to try to slip between the cracks to save them?

+ Industrious
+ Passionate
+ Tactician

- Easily bored
- Reckless
- Anxious

Rider's History: The middle child of three, he tended to be on the more forgotten side of his family of artists from Rivercrest Hold. Not the eldest or the baby, his grandfather took the lost child under his wing--oftentimes having him help out with the storefront when his father and eldest brother were working on newest glass products to sell. Yet whenever he and his grandfather were without work to do, they often played on a pretty little chessboard. The wisened member of the family taught him the ways to approach life--to do the best for others, even without expecting much from them in return. It strengthened Cortun into a model citizen, even if his siblings called him boring.

Yet when his older brother was searched, everything changed for Cortun. Literally.

They arrived at Western to watch him stand in front of a large clutch, yet destiny would not pick the eldest for once. It was a smaller egg that had been smashed open by the weight of another falling on top of another. The little white came into the world screaming, disgruntled and unhappy with all the candidates around them. The only time on the sands that they weren’t utterly cranky was the arrival of a golden sister, who had those bright facets captivated until she had impressed. Only then did they turn their attention to not the candidates but the stands--and picked Cortun out of the crowd.

The mocking voice in Cortun’s head nearly had him rocked off his axis. Because why was he up there, when Menyherth needed him down with them? They had much to do, after all.

Cortun had never run so fast in his life, for at the age of seventeen, he became a rider--and the first in his family at something.

The pair worked in equal cohesion, striving to excel at lessons. Menyherth never declared a gender, and would often quip a crass remark or wiggle their tailforks at anyone who bothered to chase an answer from them. The only other distraction during lessons came in the form of Neliath, for for Menyherth there was only the glimmering hide of their beloved sister. The world could melt away -- and eventually, it would.

Thread came back to the planet with a vengeance, and both Cortun and Menyherth rose to meet it eagerly. Menyherth’s sleek form made it easy to slip and streak to catch the stray clumps that even agile greens sometimes missed--and even bodyblocked a shot to save a wingmate. Yet their sights were set on rising through the ranks. Shortened stamina of a white be damned--with good ‘seconds, they were determined to prove themselves able to stand among Western’s best at the helm to protect Pern.

Where did your rider Impress from? Western

How long have they been stationed at Western Weyr? 21 Turns -- Since impression. Like Menyherth could ever leave, pfh.

How do they feel about Thread's return? The chance that they were looking for to prove themselves--Cortun and Menyherth both. It is daunting, yet both bite at the bit to scream into the wind.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? If dragons didn’t bleed green--Menyherth would try to convince you that they bleed blue. The white is devote to three things in their life; Cortun, Western, and Neliath. Depending on the day, that order can change. Cortun feels they owe Western everything; their life, Menyherth, and could never have strayed away even when the skies were without the sheen of thread.

Why do they want to be a Wingleader, ICly? Cortun owes Western a life debt in his mind, one that he wants to repay dearly. While going out in a blaze of glory is a creche kid’s dream that lingers in the back of his mind, so does the opportunity for him and his Dearest to lead dragons out in formation--and back, safe and sound. Menyherth is a bit of a Small Dog syndrome of a white--don’t try to convince them they’ll never do something. They want to prove that they can be great, and to lead wingriders into battle with their archaic enemy. After the blunder of the double hatching, Menyherth has all the more drive to be a wingleader, to prove that Western is capable. Capable of trusting a little white at the front to help protect Pern. A small, selfish part of them hopes to impress the dragon of their dreams--but, y’know, all that altruistic stuff first.

Menyherth is a tactician at heart, something that they admire in their rider. The pair are quick to make adjustments, to shift dragons around depending on their flame and strength. But the lithe white uses their size and stature is one they take full advantage of--quick to snap away anything that lingers or strays too close to a wingmate--even going so far as to take the hit instead. Yet their limited stamina is why Cortun and Menyherth rely so much on wingseconds to see through the full fall with their wing. Their wing is their family, and they encourage close ties to help cement that feeling. Everyone must rely on each other, after all.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. A tight, familial bond with wingriders saves lives.

How would they react if one of their riders died after making a bad call during Threadfall? A deep mourning runs through them, even if they must put on a braver face for their wingriders. The what-ifs are non-stop. For what if they had more stamina to throw themselves in the path? Or had to return to the ground if they simply couldn’t fly anymore? Yet he opens his weyr to any of his riders who need a shoulder and a safe space to breathe and grieve. They encourage drills, running over the bad call between them to find ways to prevent a bad call from happening again--but it’ll be no secret that their deaths will hang on the pair for quite some time.

How would they react if one of their wingriders starts to get mouthy and doesn't respect your leadership? It’s met in kind with an expected air--a raised eyebrow, stoic expression. Mouthy words are nothing new. That can be kept to standard punishment if a sharp word doesn’t stop them--laps around the weyrbowl, longer drill runs. But if it escalates to disrespect, disobedience even, Cortun would have a private audience with the rider. For their insubordination not only puts themselves at risk, not just Cortun and Menyherth--but the whole wing is in trouble. A chain is only as strong as the weakest link, after all. Would a rider and dragon be so selfish to put so many lives at risk for their disrespect? They can both live with not being liked, but endangering others is not something they would forgive.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? Big dogs in small bodies, both Cortun and Menyherth itch to prove themselves--not only themselves, but also to carry Western’s good name on their backs. A pair of calculating minds and emotional hearts that want to embrace their family of a wing to bolster their strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if given one? Cortun wants to strengthen a sense of pride for their home, for Western. They could be anywhere in Pern, and yet his riders are here, with him, fighting thread to protect the ones they all love.
OOCly, I’d love to run drills and games, give players with riders in the wing some things to respond to.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: E’nd
Rider's Age: 32
Dragon's Name: Fadeth
Dragon's Age: 13
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? Western Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved (he was made for a wingsecond contest)
What role do they currently hold? Wingsecond
What role are they looking for? Remain as Wingsecond
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
E’nd always was and always will be a rather ambitious man when it comes to some sort of level of status in life, and being a lady holder son hasn’t improved that way of thinking in the least. Despite his appearance and being his mother’s favorite child he learned a great deal when it came to his older siblings in how people worked and how to motivate beyond with praise or gifts versus the typical fear or promise of some sort of honor. While he has no goals in becoming a weyrleader he is more happy to play more of a background role in maintaining peace and making sure that everything works as smoothly as possible and will do anything to reassure that it will.

While he spends a great deal of time being concerned over the dealings of others, their workload, and their feelings E’nd has a nasty habit of not passing his own work along to others to ease his burden nor is he rather any good in expression his own feelings towards others. Instead he tends to keep a rather neutral face towards everyone, even if it tends to at times comes across as rather unapproachable in regards naturally looking angry at the world (something that his mother and him could not escape no matter how much of a pleasant face they attempted to offer). He tends to keep things bottled up inside, a habit that grew having very few to talk to back home that weren’t loyal to his brothers’ in someway.
Positive Trait List: Calculating, Responsible, Ambitious
Negative Trait List: Manipulative, Self-Burden, Impassive

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: What has he or she accomplished during their time in this position? What have they achieved?
Currently at this time E’nd has helped other riders in and outside of his wing as well as participated in stone throw drill. He likes to keep things organize, when given the chance he would be someone who would organize list’s, make sure everything is done according to needs, make sure everyone gear is maintained, and make sure there are not lacking in any sort of goods/food. He wants to see his wing succeed no matter what they face and believes being prepared is a key ingredient for that goal.

How do they see themselves and their position? i.e. Do they think they're a god among men? Do they think they've let their Wing down? Are they unsure? Neutral? Apathetic?
E’nd thinks he can do more, he sincerely what to help others as well as do what he can to reassure himself and the wing that they are prepared to face even the worst of times. He views himself more of a tool there to help others, be a resource for them when they need advice in terms of dealing with threadfall or drills.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? 1 Turn

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? Keep their position.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr?
Other than the weather E’nd rather enjoys the Western Weyr, it is far away from his home as well he admires the leadership and somewhat less restrictive regulations that High Reaches has.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt?
He would want to help run, or even do his own drills to help make sure that the wing is prepared, maybe do a few surprise gear checks to make sure everyone is maintaining their leathers in tip top condition to avoid any serious injuries from not doing so.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? I would definitely like for E'nd to offer assistance in some sort of threadfall event (could be a small one with the wing or larger). As well I would like for him to maybe do one or two drills on his own as help to the wingleader and play more of a supporting role to his wingmates if needed.

How active have you been with the character? I was a little slow last year with wedding preparations, as well Westen Weyr hasn’t had any shop ran threadfalls, or full hatchings (there was the island one but that was the only one when E’nd became wingsecond) so it’s been a little slow for him.

Seconds are Best! Sign Me Up!

Rider's Name: Ash'il
Rider's Age: 29
Dragon's Name: Iptoneth
Dragon's Age: 10 Turns
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved
Will you need a colorist to create art for this character? Nope
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: Ash'il is known for being protective, whether it is of his family or someone he feels needs his help. He may be younger than his twin sister by a few minutes, but he has always looked out for Ashlyn and their other siblings. He sees it as his duty to keep his family safe from any harm that might come their way. This protective nature expands beyond his family to cover all the members of High Reaches Weyr, wanting to make sure everyone is doing well. If someone is being picked on, he will jump in and get the offenders to back down. When a fire breaks out anywhere in the Weyr, he is there as quickly as he can to lend a hand in getting the blaze extinguished and lives to safety. Of course, this can lead to him being overzealous in being the hero, jumping in when his protection is not needed. There has been times when he has tried to save one of his sisters, just to find out they had it handled. He has also jumped to conclusions, such as when he thought he saw someone in trouble and it was just some kids roughhousing. This can also lead him to jumping into danger without any care to his own safety. He has been close to being trampled on by angry dragons he has tried to stop or been punched when dealing with bullies. Luckily, Iptoneth and his family have no qualms reminding him to be careful and pulling him back when he is not.

This young man is a hard worker, who puts his all into whatever he is doing. He doesn't mind getting dirty, whether it is helping to move a boulder trapping people or cleaning his beloved dragon. Ash'il is usually known to get up bright and early, whether working on a move that is giving them trouble or making sure everything is perfect. Just because he is a bronze rider, he feels like he still should work for everything he has. He makes sure to go above and beyond the call of duty, not just sitting back on his rank. He will put in extra hours and feels that leading by example is the best way to show who he is. However, this leads to a tendency for the young man to overwork and overextend himself. It isn't unusual for him to volunteer to help a friend plant a garden, then go help with a Wing drill all in the same day. There has been days where he went the whole day without eating, not having time to get a bite to eat. Not only that, but he has done extra training with Iptoneth, instead of getting some sleep. His bronze has been known to drag his rider off for food, sleep, or fun regularly. Also, those he cares about will also remind him that he can't help others as well as he wants, if he doesn't take care of himself.

Ash'il is a very responsible young man, making sure he is punctual and prepared for anything he has going on in the day. He always has on him a bag of supplies, packed with anything he or others might need throughout the day. Always ready at a moment's notice for his Wingleader to call them for anything, whether it is a drill or a competition with another Wing. If he or Iponeth does anything wrong, he is quick to apologize and fix anything that might be broken. He knows that people look up to him, so he makes sure to model a good example of a respectable person. Unfortunately, this causes him to put pressure on himself if he makes a mistake or if he is unable to prevent someone from getting hurt. He will pour more time into training, to improve himself and make up for what he sees as 'failures,' even if only in his own eyes. He will also mentally kick himself if harm comes to another, his loved ones having to remind him he isn't to blame. Iptoneth does not let his rider dwell on guilt and has been working on having him let go of things outside of his control. He reminds him of all the good he has done and that no one is perfect.

Rider's History: Ashphil was born a few minutes after his twin sister, Ashlyn, to two riders of High Reaches Weyr. Unlike other Weyrbrats, he and his siblings were actually raised by their family, instead of being put in the creche. Like his siblings, he was used to one parent watching them while the other was busy. If both Alythrae or D'ast had to be away, another family member or a family friend would look after them. When he and Ashlyn were old enough, there were times they would even volunteer to watch their younger siblings. The young boy watched with interest as the leaders of the Weyr would help others, making him interested in becoming a diplomat. So as soon as he turned eight turns old, he headed for the courtesan hall. He spent the next six years throwing himself into his diplomatic studies, determined to learn everything he could.

When he turned fourteen, he turned his sights on becoming a candidate, having the same hopes of being a rider as his twin. He wasn't too worried if he didn't impress right away, feeling he would find his dragon one day. He lent his strength to his sister every hatching they did not impress, adding his voice to their parents' reassurances that they would have their moment in the sun. If not, Ashphil reminded his sister that they both had noble crafts they could fully return to. Though he would be lying if he said it didn't hurt a little every time they didn't impress, but it just fueled his fire to keep trying. He didn't know what kind of dragon would be his bonded, but he knew he would love it with every fiber of his being. Until that day, he would give his all to his candidate studies and craft, when he had time to work on the latter.

Soon after the twins turned nineteen turns, there was a hatching that would change their lives forever. Ashphil was watching as each of the hatchlings broke out of their shells, cheering them all on. It didn't escape his notice as one of the blue ones made his way over to his twin, before impressing to her. This made the young man smile because the baby had protected a sibling, so knew Ashlyn was in good claws with the blue. His joy for his sister was short lived, as he noticed one of the other babies were about to attack a fellow candidate. He sprang into action, putting himself between the baby and the candidate, determined to take the attack instead. Thankfully, one of the bronze babies came over and convinced his sibling to back down. He had gone on to explain that the young man was under his protection, before turning to the stunned Ashphil. The young bronze spoke into his mind, before his eyes burst into a rainbow of impression. From then on, Ash'il and his twin would be on their new path as future dragon riders along with their dragons.

Over the next turn, the newly bonded pair threw themselves into their Weyrling lessons and learning about the other Weyrlings. Once they had graduated, that work ethic was transferred to the Wing they had been assigned to. They memorized the names of everyone in the Wing and any information they gathered about each of them. Thankfully, Ashlyn was always willing to swap information she learned as a Weyrlingmaster's Assistant. Like his twin sister, Ash'il made it a point to know every rider and future rider of the Weyr, filling away any information obtained about any of them. He used his studies as a diplomat to mediate any situations he came upon and provide suggestions to those who would listen to help the Weyr. He takes his role as a bronze rider seriously, focusing on being the best leader that he can be. When Thread came back, he was ready to do everything he could to protect those he cares about.

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches Weyr

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? Since he impressed ten turns ago to Iponeth (plus, are from High Reaches)

How do they feel about Thread's return? Much like the rest of his Weyr, Ash'il had known that Thread would return. He isn't happy that they were right, though, since he knows how much damage and suffering comes with its return. Having almost lost his mother and his own life in the last major Threadfall, he knows first hand the threat it poses. So with every fiber of his being he will fight the silver menace, to keep as many people safe as he can (including his own family and friends).

How do they feel about their current Weyr? Ash'il feels there are some riders who should be in higher positions, who are held back because of the color of their dragon. However, he respects those in power and will follow orders. After all, it was their leaders who had them prepared for when Thread came back. He loves High Reaches Weyr and he will do everything in his ability to keep its people safe.

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly? Ash'il wants to help make sure everyone in the Weyr is the best they can be. He knows that Wingseconds are integral in helping the Wingleaders prepare every rider in their wings for everything Thread can throw at them. The more ready their riders are, the greater they can protect those on Pern who can't fend for themselves. Ash'il feels it also helps in lessening their own casualties, which he wants to help contribute to. He believes his hardwork would come in handy as a Wingsecond, knowing he would put everything he had into making sure he, their leader, and their wing was ready for anything. He wants to keep Pern safe and knows being a Wingsecond is the next logical step in protecting his home.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. Ash'il leads by example, in thick and thin with the wing.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? I think Ash'il would make a good fit as a Wingsecond because he takes his role as a bronze rider very seriously. He knows that High Reaches Weyr looks up to them as leaders, so as a Wingsecond he can further his example as a good role model. Not only that, he wants to help the Weyr continue to excel, so that people will rest easier knowing they are there to protect them. Having seen all too well how easily a hard Threadfall can cost lives (having almost died in the last big one and lost a fellow wingmate), he will put everything into helping whatever leader he works under. He feels the better prepared they are, the less good fighting men and women they will lose. I see him as someone who will thrive as a second, learning from his mistakes and helping others do the same. Plus, he has been in the record room a lot, so he has studied on techniques that have worked in the past. Also, he has knowledge of all the inhabitants of the Weyr, so can put that to good use. Since his twin sister is a assistant Weyrlingmaster, he would have an idea of the next generation of riders. Also, he was trained as a diplomat, so he can use those skills to help the wing he is assigned to thrive. His dragon, Iptoneth, would make sure he didn't wear himself out with trying to do too much as a Wingsecond.

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall? Ash'il would know that he is not the Wingleader, but that it is his job to take over, if something happens to their leader. So he would be worried about his leader, but he would focus on those who were in the air with him. Knowing how things could get dangerous in an instant, he would be quick in checking on his fellow wingmates and giving them direction. He knows he can't hesitate, so he would throw everything he could into the temporary Wingleader role, making sure the wing survives Threadfall, not wanting to lose anyone under him, if he can help it.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands? Ash'il would do everything in his power to show the wingrider that they may not like him, but that it is important to follow the commands given to him. Since he was trained in the art of diplomacy, he would try to find out why the rider did not like him and see if there was some kind of solution they could arrive at. Then during the next Threadfall, he would pull the rider aside at the end and take him to the infirmary. He would show how many people were hurt and how it can be even worse with those who do not follow the rules of their leaders. Then he would have the rider talk to some of those who lost loved ones during Threadfall. He would stress the importance of team unity during Threadfall, explaining how it could cost them their life if they caused issues for their wing. If all else fails, he would report the rider to his leader and what a threat he believed the rider was to their wing.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one? I would work with whoever was the Wingleader and possible other Wingsecond on drills and games we could do with the wing. I would also try to suggest social RPs from time to time, so the wing would get to know one another better. During Threadfall, I would want the wing to be talking in our Discord section, so we would be able to help one another during it.
