Volkei is a relaxed guy with an easy-going personality. He is typically calm and prefers to let insults and slights slide off of him without much of a reaction. Life isn't great at the bottom of the hemospectrum but it's a system too old and too entrenched into Alternia to change. Instead of fighting something too big to take on, Volkei chooses to follow the system and embrace his passions in life instead of dwelling on the terrible aspects of being a lowblood. Maybe the hemospectrum doesn't provide much for him but he can keep himself entertained and happy even if he's not necessarily safe from highblood privilege. And there's always the chance he'll gain protection from a highblood that takes a liking to him. He doesn't judge others for not embracing the hemospectrum or liking it but won't go out of his way to convert them or let them convert him. He is an optimist that chooses to look for the positives in life and chase the good opportunities that come his way. Being social comes easy to him because he looks for what is expected from him and is willing to play his assigned role in the grand scheme of things.

However, despite Volkei's laid-back attitude, he can be pushed past his boiling point which will result in an explosion of emotion, yelling and sometimes violence. It takes a lot to get him riled up enough to blow but once he's that angry he stays that way for a long time. The types of things that would upset him to this point would be piled up incidents and insults too dangerous to ignore (four or five slights from the same antagonist) or witnessing wrongdoing to a loved one. It is easier for him to confront an a*****e on the behalf of someone else than for himself as he believes it to be his place on the bottom of the hemospectrum to simply deal with abuse or rudeness. He will say his piece before stomping off, dragging any of his allies with him to remove themselves from the scene to avoid getting even more furious.

Cooling Volkei's emotions down is a slow process that requires him to leave whatever situation set him off. Volkei calms down best when snuggled up with his lusus but comforting from a friend will also work. Being left alone makes him feel like he's done irreparable damage during his tantrum and he will spiral into self hate until reassured otherwise. If not reassured, Volkei will avoid those involved in the conflict and continue on in life with his dream of becoming a grill-master. He believes it best to let go of those he has hurt rather than upset them again with his presence. Volkei doesn't dwell in sadness much; more likely he is channeling that emotion into action to repair the problem or into anger (at himself or at others).

What interests Volkei the most is fire. He loves heat and flames, despite their dangers, and works hard at perfecting the art of grilling food via barbecue or over a campfire. Creating perfectly grilled meats is his favorite but he throws in vegetables and fruits as well to compliment the flavor of wingbeasts and hoofbeasts. Volkei sells most of his work in order to work towards creating his own restaurant in the future. If he works hard, there's a chance that he'll gain a good enough reputation to attract highbloods to sponsor him which would open doors to more expensive ingredients and better equipment. He is definitely a dreamer that hopes to share his visions with the rest of the world. Those visions being perfectly grilled steaks and deliciously sauteed mushrooms for every troll.

His other hobbies besides grilling and cooking are practicing the ukulele, messing around with his rock garden and surfing. Volkei picked up the instrument as a way grab attention, to be honest. He figured that sound was a more effective advertisement than making banners and discovered it to be a lot more fun than he'd expected. His skills are still beginner level but he tries to make time to learn new songs before bed to put his little brother to sleep. The rock garden is a gravel pit outside his hive that he rakes and rearranges in order to enter a meditative state of sorts. During this time, he reflects over wrongdoings he's committed or that have happened to him in order to process them and let them go. Surfing is a special activity to him as he lives in the mountains and has to take special trips to the sea in order to actually surf. It's a different world out there on the ocean and he likes to ride the waves to experience it and wonder what life is like deep below for those on the opposite end of the spectrum. The athleticism and coordination needed to surf are a fun game to him and it's a good way to cool off after a week of toiling in front of a grill or stove.

Strengths:
Relaxed - Volkei is the type of troll to go with the flow and enjoy life as it unfolds. He doesn't worry or stress about how he is going to get from point A to point B since he knows he's capable enough to think of something. This calm attitude keeps him from crumbling under the anxiety of being at the bottom of the hemospectrum. He knows what is expected of him and as long as he goes along with it, things should be fine, right? He wants to be the happiest troll rather than the richest or the strongest and being carefree allows him to chase this goal.

Venturesome - Got something new to try? Volkei is totally down to do it. Life is too short to be worried about how difficult or embarrassing something might be. He enjoys the novelty of new hobbies, sports or foods even if he does have strong personal preferences. He leads a very exciting life because of his willingness to try something he hasn't done before and feels like it will make him a worldly person. If it doesn't work out or hurts him, hey at least he knows now not to do it again.

Flaws:
Avoidant - If something has gone wrong and he can't easily fix it, Volkei will go out of his way to avoid the person, place or situation that has caused him stress. This can lead to him missing out on things due to his fear of exploding again or out of heavy regret. He struggles to "let bygones be bygones" and feels it is his obligation to be unseen or unheard if he has wronged someone or if they have trampled on him. Otherwise it would inconvenience the highbloods, right? Purposefully leaving yourself out of things can be very isolating and painful which is something he fails to cope with at times.

Compliant - While it may seem like being agreeable and conforming is a good thing, it wears on Volkei's psyche. He works hard to please others at the cost of his own interests or well-being. He does not have a lot to give so his generosity often comes at the cost of him being short on beetles or food for himself. There are times that he disagrees with others but keeps quiet to avoid drawing attention to himself in a negative way in order to protect himself. Because of this, he wonders if people would like the real him or if they'd prefer the obedient servant image that he projects. His inability to be truthful and forthcoming makes him feel a bit like a liar sometimes and he hates himself for that.

Home: He makes his home in a cave underneath Busthind. The entrance is ground level and leads into a spacious cavern with hot springs and steam vents. It is always warm here, even more so thanks to the grills that have been installed in order for Volkei to practice his BBQing. Most of the space is dedicated to a makeshift attempt at a restaurant with stone tables and chairs for people to sit at. The back half of the hive is run down and honestly kind of neglected as he only goes there to sleep or change clothes. There are lava lamps around the entire place because his lusus and brother enjoy watching the blobs float around.

There is a sign out front to mark the entrance to "The Whole Hog", his fledgling BBQ restaurant. He tried to put up a chalkboard to write the daily specials on but it kept getting stolen so now it's chained to a boulder.

Please take care not to step on the gravel pit rock garden out front! It has been carefully organized by Volkei.

Lusus: Volkei's lusus is Roa, a fire-breathing white tiger with dramatic red streaks across its body that Volkei has dyed onto the fur. Volkei dyes his own hair with streaks and wanted his lusus to match so that everyone would be able to tell they were together. Roa, being amused by his child's silly antics gave him permission to go ahead and dye it since it doesn't hurt him.

Roa also has another child, an actual tiger cub named Mio, that he cares for alongside Volkei and the two get along well thanks to Roa's encouragement and mediation. Mio is still quite young (and rambunctious) and Roa encourages Volkei to care for it like an older brother in the hopes that Volkei will learn some responsibility and maybe even get some insight into his own immature behaviors by seeing it from the other side. Mio is a typical little brother that wants to follow his older sibling around and do everything they're doing which suits Volkei fine. The only point of conflict between them is that Mio enjoys swatting at Volkei's hair because it looks like a fun toy.

Roa is a laid back lusus and encourages Volkei to act similarly. He will only use his fire breath to start fires for Volkei's grills or to create a protective barrier to keep antagonists from reaching his children. Roa is too worried about starting forest fires to use his breath outside of controlled circumstances or extreme danger. He encourages Volkei to develop his own skills and watches over his progress, showing him how to do something once or twice before expecting Volkei to practice it on his own. Hunting is one of the few exceptions to this until Volkei gets a little bigger. Right now, both cubs are too small for it and Roa does all the hunting himself.

He gets very angry when disobeyed and will aggressively groom you while simultaneously scolding you. It is not a terrible punishment but it does take a long time as you don't get to leave until the lecture is over.
