Flydra hates door traps
11/16 advances
2/3 minibosses defeated

It was another door trap, similar to the one they'd encountered earlier. How had Engrav dismantled it? She strained to remember the procedure she'd only seen done once before. Flydra squinted at the mechanisms and tried to separate out the wires she needed. Calling Engrav over, she waited for his nod of approval that she was doing this correctly. Some might think it embarrassing to learn from a lowblood but she didn't mind it much. They were supposed to be useful after all. If they were completely worthless, there would be no value in the spectrum. Only the highbloods would survive.

"Like... this?" There was a satisfying click as she cut the wire and the hum coming from the wall beside the door quieted. They were in.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.
The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!
You have encountered a ...

Dice 1
1. ... Horrific... (-2 on all attacks)
2. ... Agile... (-1 on accuracy rolls)
3. ... Contorting... (-2 on all accuracy rolls)
4. ... Preserved ... (-1 on all attacks)
Dice 2
1. ... Toxic... (Players take 2 extra damage per turn)
2. ... Relentless... (Players take 2x damage on the lowest accuracy roll)
3. ... Empowered... (using artifacts/ability/items deals 3 dmg to the entire party)
4. ... Burning... (take an extra 3 dmg each time you deal max damage (highest roll possible for weapon or damage-dealing skill))
Dice 3
1. ...Wailing Zombie Prisoner!
2. ... Mutated Elite Troops!
3. ... Undead Cyborg!
4. ... Pack of Shambling Lusii!
MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 30/30
If you rolled a 1, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 2, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 3, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 4, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 5, take 3 dmg.
If you rolled a 6, take 3 dmg. Your attack this turn does double damage.
If all party members reach 0hp, look below:
You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,
you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.
Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first or second mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.
You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you've reached one of the propulsion systems! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - It's a mess of disturbingly fleshy wires down here, but they all seem to be connected to a single, monolithic console. Everything is where it should be according to ground control's instructions, so recalibrating the power output is simple enough.
2 - It smells like ash and rot in here. Some of the wires are torn, sparking ominously in the vicinity of a particularly charred corpse. The unit is just draining power like this. With ground control's assistance, you manage to shut down the system and quarantine it.
3 - The room is pitch black. You're only able to discern its purpose through narrow flashlight beams and stumbling over the snaking wires. The console at the center is nothing but a dead-end for the ship's power supply. With instructions from headquarters, you manage to grope around in the dark and quarantine the system.
4 - The room feels like an inferno with how strained the propulsion system is. With instructions from headquarters you're able to alleviate pressure from the unit and reroute power accordingly. The center console already begins to glow less menacingly.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

Engrav tries to attack the boss!

No sooner had the door cracked open when a thick, metallic limb shot through the doorway, grabbing Engrav by the neck. "Oh-" he managed to croak out before he was lifted entirely from the ground by some sort of half-metal monstrosity. Black spots swam in from of the yellowblood's eyes as he choked, too stunned to do much other than try to bat the arm aside ineffectually.

The room tilted, and he felt something impact his back as the monster threw him away through the air. Engrav slammed against the ground like a limp doll, just barely managing to call out a weak "Help" before the monster was among the rest of the group.

"I'll get it!" Scorpa hollered as her teammates scrambled around the battlefield. The creature in front of her looked more dangerous than the others they'd encountered before. Normally she'd relish the chance to test herself against something stronger. But this time Scorpa's eyes narrowed in concentration. The cyborg... it reminded her of Flydra. She'd never been faced with the possibility that Flydra might alter her body this far and end up like this creature. It was horrifying. However, the yellowblood wasn't one to write off the experimentation so easily.

This troll had been a failure. Someone like Flydra would be better than this. They'd heed this warning and be more careful. They'd overcome anything together!

Running in, she fought the monster back! She'd protect Flydra from this!

She'd flown too close to the sun.

Swatted out of the sky, Scorpa's attack wasn't fast or clever enough for the cyborg. It slammed her down to the ground, stopping her rampage.

"Ngh-Ahk!" The yellowblood spat blood as she rolled and hit a wall. Shakily, her arms pushed back up off the ground. Everything hurt but she wasn't about to stop here. Fine, she didn't need wings or however that story went. All she needed was the feeling that roared inside her chest. She wasn't going to stop now!

Flydra is punching the boss

What was that? Flydra watched the cyborg in extreme fascination. It was an old model of cyborg from an era long past. She wanted to get her hands on it and take it apart to analyze every single part of it. But her scientific interests would have to wait as it began to lunge around the room attacking them, first grabbing Engrav. He slammed into the ground with a weak plea for help and she instantly started running to check on him as the creature moved on to attack the other trolls. His body was bruised but he was still conscious. She didn't see any signs of broken limbs and tested his flesh arm lightly to check if it worked.

"You're going to be alright. I've got you." Scorpa dashed around the room, attacking the monster and keeping its attention away from them. She couldn't have been more grateful to her. The yellowblood always knew what she needed her to do without a need for words. She was a super soldier capable of the most important task- understanding what the priorities were in the current fight. Flydra unleashed a round of needles at the cyborg as it tried to circle around to Engrav and herself again, forcing it back towards Static and Scorpa.

Engrav's injuries were bad but far from fatal. He groaned from his place on the floor but she could see that his eyes never left the enemy's position. He had good instincts and survival skills. She was about to help him up when the cyborg attacked again and she shifted her attention to swiping at it with her prosthetic. Flydra was unable to land a decent hit on it but it danced away again to harass the others some more.

"Watch out for the arm- it's charging some kind of cannon-" Parts of the equipment installed on its arm had begun to glow faintly and there was a quiet hum starting to crescendo. She didn't like the sound of that. Old technology from this era was still unknown to her and she didn't know whether this would hurt or devastate them to get hit by. Her eyes searched the battlefield for Scorpa in intense fear. While her moirail was fearless, she wasn't invincible.

"Scorpa, be careful!"

Austri couldn't happen again. Not to Scorpa.

Engrav attacks the boss!

Engrav managed to push himself back up, retching just a little bit from that heavy hit. He scrambled to his feet in the corridor as the metallic abomination lurched closer to the rest of the group. It looked like something on it's arm was... spooling up? There was definitely a distinct crackle of electricity, and blue sparks arced up the sides of the weapon. Engrav could smell ozone, and it smelled very dangerous indeed.

He only had a few seconds before the thing fired. It certainly looked like it was ready to go off at any second. Engrav snapped a quick picture of the thing's arm with his buttonhole camera, then sprang towards the monster. It had to have some kind of targeting system. The yellowblood slid under a swipe from the thing's claws, then sprang up and slammed his metallic hand right into it's face, aiming for the glowing glass eyes. They shattered and his glasses warned him away as soon as the monster reared back. Engrav jumped away as claws grasped air right where his carapace have been mere moments before. He opened his prosthetic just a bit to see the chunk of glass eye he'd torn from the thing's face.

Engrav smiled to himself.

That was going to come in handy.

"Almost there guys..." Static managed, through his laborious breathing. It was beginning to get really hard to lift his weapon up and swing it. Well, that was a lie, it had become difficult quite a while ago, now it was next to impossible. Still, he could tell they had almost finished it off, only a little more...

"Go!" Scorpa pushed Static out of the way as the cyborg began to charge up the weapon on it's arm. Literally kicking him away, she took over the battle from here. Grabbing the enemy's wrist, Scorpa began to wrestle with it, trying to aim it away from her team. She'd promised she would protect Flydra! She was going to keep that promise! The two fell to the floor as they kicked and grabbed at each other, one trying to get free while the other trying to trap it. This would go a lot faster if she could figure out a way to force it to fire! But for her to do that she'd need to get at least one hand free to try things.

Or maybe she could take a short cut. Blue lightning flashed in her mind as the yellowblood considered another way to end things. Her hand reached out to feel for where she'd dropped her sword and grabbed it. The plan was risky and stupid and she knew she'd end up getting hurt in the process. But she glanced at her teammates for a moment. If she could protect them she'd be fine.

She'd be a hero. And heroes never died!

Scorpa stabbed her blade into the mechanism. An explosion rippled through the room.

"SCORPA!" Static yelled out as she hurled herself in front of the oncoming attack. He watched the undead troll strike the yellowblood and saw her then fall to the floor. He heaved himself up, using what little energy he had left, and rushed over to her, picking her up in his arms. "Hold on, okay? Put your arms over my neck, okay?" He tried to say calmly as he carried her away from the monster. It was already collapsing under the yellowblood girl's last attack, but he didnt want to chance it. His steps were shaky tho, he was almost out of the game himself.

The blueblood managed maybe two more steps before he went to the ground himself. He made sure to put Scorpa on the ground as carefully as he could, and then collapsed next to her. "Just.. take a break, okay?" He said, looking into her eyes as he lay on the floor next to her. "Ill get you back... to the pod... and we can get you some medical help."

Scorpa tries to second wind

Scorpa lay still as the smoke cleared. She could hear voices and felt her body grabbed. Weakly, she attempted to follow instruction with no protest, lifting her arms around Static's neck. Everything hurt. She clenched her eyes shut in pain as he toppled to the ground next. The yellowblood could feel his heavy breathing as he tried to reassure both of them that they'd be okay. That idiot, why'd he try to go and show off when he was just as hurt as she was? She opened her eyes once more and flushed lightly as she realized he was looking straight at her, spouting off a cool line.

"You too. I'm not done with you yet." Scorpa croaked out and attempted a grin that came out more like a grimace. But it was true. Static was expected to return in one piece as well. Scorpa was only just getting started with him. She glanced over at the other two, Engrav and Flydra to see them completing the mission. The tealblood's presence comforted Scorpa, even if she had to take care of the ship first. She closed her eyes again, drifting into darkness. Once she was done, Scorpa knew they would be in good hands. Cold, but good.

"SCORPA!" Flydra screamed as she watched her moirail go out in an explosion of glory. The yellowblood fell to the ground only to be picked up by Static who didn't look much better. The doctor was about to rush over to the duo to help when a beeping caught her attention. That was right, they needed to handle the flagship. It was unfair that she had to take time dealing with this when her moirail was in critical condition and losing consciousness. Grabbing at the mess of wires, she traced them back to the console and surveyed the system. It looked correct according to the instructions they'd received.

"Hang in there, we're almost free-" Her fingers flew across the keyboard, recalibrating the power according to the instructions given to her. The machine made a pleasant humming sound and the right lights flickered. It seemed they had accomplished their goal, even if it had come at an unacceptable cost. Hurrying over to Scorpa and Static, she called to Engrav to help carry them back to the pods.

"You fought well tonight. Rest now- I will personally see you back to full health myself-" She spoke to all of them but only Scorpa received a worried gentle kiss to the forehead. The return to the pods was uneventful though strenuous.
