Oh god, it was a dead ******** clown, just great. What surprises did this thing have in store? Kursha didn't seem to be ******** around at least, with how he was brandishing his precision shots at the subjuggator. She breathed in sharply through her nose as she tried to ignore the scent of stale, rotting flesh. "Captain, like this." She said cooly; was she trying to joke again, or just get everyone's attention so they didn't walk into her line of fire? Because--

She punched the daywalker square in the face, her legs thankfully sturdy as she rushed it without stumbling. It tried to grab her. It missed.

    Mostly because she wasn't there.

The second punch came from behind, the gunshot tearing through the mutating mess of skin. Die already, die already, die already.

Sarcel disappeared.

Kursha had read it in her file of course, that the blueblood possessed powers, but it was his first time seeing it... or rather not seeing it. He held is fire, gaze wandering the place where she had vanished. She did not remain hidden for long. A concussive boom filled the air, as Sarcel fired shrapnel into the undead's back. While it was stunned, Kursha aimed a shot through it's thinkpan. He forced himself to grin. “Hey, why didn't you show me those kinds of moves earlier?” he said, laughing weakly.

(Lorata falls over dead in the next post, this is a spoiler.)

Lorata felt weak and, worse, useless. This fight wasn't one she could survive, she saw now. The Captain and Sarcel were doing their best, but she could see it, clear as moonlight, the way the creature would move next. There was nowhere to run.

HP: 0
Damage: 2

Lorata brought the point of her partisan up, but it was only a meager effort. The creature swept it aside easily and when the blow came there was a loud crack and then nothing. She fell where she stood, blood oozing purple beneath her. If this had been one of her stories, she would have stood up. Rallied with the others to end the fight. Won.

She didn't move.

"L-LORATA!" Sarcel had regained her footing after her assault, just in time to see Lorata crumpling to the floor. Like flies, one by one, they fell. They went out gloriously, with a kill for a kill.

    Well, hopefully Lorata wasn't dead.

Now she was the one bent over a body, her heart racing, her eyes wide as her promise rang in her head to never leave her behind. She could have prevented this, could have done something, maybe if she had just--

"I'm so sorry..." They were ********. They had to turn around. This ship--everything--it was too much.

“Damn it!”

He had allowed himself to lose focus for one second and Lorata had paid for it. Hot on Sarcel's heels, Kursha sprinted towards where the undead juggalo cornered the seadweller. Even as he took the first strides, he saw her go down, weapon clattering to the floor beside her. Kursha extended the rifle, his finger hovering on the trigger. Another few steps...

The muzzle fired directly into the undead's back, leaving an angry, gaping hole in its chest. Kursha kicked the lifeless corpse aside. He watched with grit teeth and clenched fists, as Sarcel looked over the purpleblood. His blood pusher pulsed in his throat. He breathed out, and his hands returned to neutral. “You wanna call it? We're pretty much ******** class="postcontent-align-center" style="text-align: center">[ Kursha restores 4 health. ]

"What happened to 'win this thing or die trying'...?" It was such a weak attempt at a joke, but she was trying her damn best to keep herself from falling apart. Thing was, Elidae and Lorata had known the old her, the her that stuttered and bumbled around and had issues with menial tasks, but that one time--when Sir was shot--Kursha saw her cry. Maybe it was easier to fall apart now that she had no one around that she was trying to impress.

Kursha studied the blueblood carefully, trying to discern her tone. His gaze flickered to Lorata momentarily. Elidae he knew, waited in a similar state somewhere behind him. The smile he had summoned up moments before had vanished entirely. “Well, tell me, Cincil. You interested in dying tonight?” he pressed. His rifle hung from his side.

He thought he had been calm. Even as he spoke however, he felt hot surge of anger about to boil over. He continued, “Or how about them? You okay with that?” He gestured to the two trolls unconscious on the floor. His jaw clenched and he regarded the blueblood with a steely expression.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.
The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!
You have encountered a ...

Dice 1
1. ... Insatiable ... (-2 to all attacks)
2. ... Gushing ... (-1 on accuracy rolls)
3. ... Volatile ... (-2 on all accuracy rolls)
4. ... Nightmarish ... (-1 to all attacks)
Dice 2
1. ... Regenerating ... (regains 2 HP per player attack, excluding bonus attacks)
2. ... Bladed ... (3 extra dmg taken for each round in battle)
3. ... Psionic ... (using artifacts/ability/items deals 6 dmg to the entire party)
4. ... Mutating... (each member of the party takes 4 damage each time a party member deals max damage(highest roll possible))
Dice 3
1. ... Reanimated Subjugglator!
2. ... Wailing Abomination!
3. ... Hulking Commander!
4. ... Distorted Masses!
MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 40/40
If you rolled a 1, take 6 dmg.
If you rolled a 2, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 3, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 4, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 5, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 6, take 3 dmg.
If all party members reach 0hp, look below:
You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,
you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.
Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first, second or third mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.
You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your fourth mini-boss fight, you have reached one of the steering systems! Roll 1d4 in the spoiler below:

1 - The other teams appear to have been successful in their endeavors. There's enough power available for you to reengage the system. The entire room illuminates and roars with life. It's perhaps dangerous to hang around in here too long, but in the meantime the amount of energy in the air makes you feel powerful.
2 - The tendrils of the ship's wiring look like a crime scene, or perhaps a particularly gory nest. Headquarters gives you harried instructions to shut down and isolate the area before the whole ship goes up in flames.
3 - An undead helmsman is still tethered to the center console. They don't have the ability to provide power, but their presence is preventing the back-up systems from triggering. You remove the zombie and the system reengages successfully.
4 - The room is dark and cold, but with instructions from headquarters and the efforts of the teams on the other decks, the system has enough power to reboot itself. The ship begins to thrum with life. It makes your horns tingle and your hair stand on end.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

"Just being smart with you, Captain."

Suddenly another door busted open, and Sarcel's head snapped back like a whip. Why? She couldn't deal with this. She couldn't--

She looked at Elidae, coherent but battered. Lorata, splayed on the floor. Kursha, basically on death's doorstep...

She had to do this. There wasn't any other option.

"I'm going to make sure we all make it out of here alive."

She had to. Even if they lost. Even if they didn't find victory at the end of their path... she was going to make sure they still got back safe. The Sirens needed Lorata; she couldn't look them in the face and tell them she'd let her die.

She hit, she vanished, she hit again. Rinse, lather, repeat.

Kursha's eyebrows went up. After a moment, a grin spread across his face. There was the blueblood he knew and loved. Smiling, he turned his attention to the intruder. “You sound pretty sure of yourself,” he said, raising the rifle to his shoulder. In his peripheral vision, he saw the blueblood melt away. It was just him and the big guy... He stared down the undead, fearless. It hurtled towards him like a bullet train. The muzzle of the rifle burst with gunfire. The shot went wide. Kursha stood with a blade lodged between his ribs. He tipped back, crosshairs dimming. “Well... I'm... counting on you.”
