As they rounded the corner, Lorata paused and began to back up again, shaking her head. There had to be another way to go, some path that wasn't swarmed with these creatures. She was so tired. But she knew there wasn't, so she stepped forward to keep attacking. Thirty zombies wasn't as bad as sixty. Relativity was good.

"We cannot give up." She was doing it again, the talking herself up thing, "Heroes never surrender." They couldn't not when lives were on the line. It felt like every time she laid waste to a daywalker, another took its place. Was this what war would be like? Fighting on the battlefield?

Hack. Slash. Punch. Kick. Have no mercy. Leave no survivors.

They had begun to retreat. The remaining zombies pressed towards them, relenteless. Kursha glanced over his shoulder at the yellowblood, slumped over against the wall. He would not let a single one of them touch her. He emptied out the casings from his last shots, and reloaded. Most the daywalkers had dropped, and with another push, they could take them out entirely. He fired a bullet between the eyes of an approaching zombie. “... Let's wrap this up.”

[ Kursha does 12 damage. 10 zombies remain. ]

Her next swipe of her partisan swished through empty air. Lorata staggered, head swimming and balance off kilter. Flydra would have been able to fix her up quickly, she caught herself thinking as she threw herself back to avoid being caught in a daywalker's grasp. She wished... No, heroes didn't have time for wishing in battle.

There was a pained cry croaked behind them that wasn't a daywalker.

Coming in and out, the yellowblood's consciousness overcame the blackout and the yellowblood stirred for a moment, finding herself feeling much heavier than usual. She struggled, head lulling as her vision cleared, but her spongeclots rang in silence. Before she could register what was happening, the sight of her three teammates battling once again against a sea of ravaging bodies came into view. The ringing persisted, but she could now hear the shouts and gunfire.

    She... needed... to get up!

"I can't- I can't-" She couldn't get to them. Elidae's face strained as she tried to move, but found her body just didn't have the strength. After a painful series of coughs, he gasped for air heavily, suddenly feeling the horrible aches that overwhelmed her. "Shi..."

Disappointment. Did she disappoint her team as much as she disappointed herself? Now she was a liability, wasn't she. Powerless and despondent, Elidae watched the three of them mow down a horde of zombies, her face glazed over.

However, her teammates' resolve filled her with pride and admiration, along with a newfound respect. Despite feeling frustration due to her helplessness, Elidae could at least feel appreciative.

Her eyes closed as a sudden wave of darkness swept over her once again. Fighting it off, her face skewed and she let out another frustrated cry.

"Understood." The numbers were thinning out, miraculously. Suddenly something was moving behind them as opposed to in front, and Sarcel spun around, half expecting another proportionate hoard of daywalkers ready to strike her down. Instead, it was Elidae, and her mind washed over in relief. "Elidae! Stay back!" Renewed, she charged the hoard again, vicious to protect her teammates.

Over the sound of gunfire, Kursha heard Sarcel shout Elidae's name. He glanced back over his shoulder to see the yellowblood staggering to her feet. Her mangled prosthetic hung limp below her thigh. She collapsed a second later. Kursha fired off the last of his munition into the horde and whipped the rifle back over his shoulder. “Take care of the rest, lieutenant,” he called, sprinting back down the hall. As he reached Elidae, he skidded to a halt and knelt down beside her.

“Hey, hey. Eli-bug. You all right?”

Lorata took another moment to try and steady herself, leaning heavily on her partisan. Elidae was awake? She was so glad to see that, but if she wasn't careful she was going to end up in the same condition as the yellowblood. She had to reach the end on her own two feet. Mustering up a smile for Elidae, Lorata turned to reconsider the hallway.

Oh. There was a door.

"Thank god..." With the threat out of the way and Elidae properly assessed, Sarcel felt better about continuing on. Not great, but better.

At least, until they came across another door. Her stomach did a flip with deja vu.

"It seems locked." And thankfully only locked. She tested the handle out a few more times before concluding it wouldn't budge without additional force.

Lorata tries to unlock.

Maybe she was too tired to overthink the process of unlocking the door. Maybe all of the failures had built up into some self fulfilling prophecy that had been preventing her from reaching her full lockpicking potential. Maybe this lock was just an easier one. Whatever the reason, Lorata opened the door.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.
The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!
You have encountered a ...

Dice 1
1. ... Insatiable ... (-2 to all attacks)
2. ... Gushing ... (-1 on accuracy rolls)
3. ... Volatile ... (-2 on all accuracy rolls)
4. ... Nightmarish ... (-1 to all attacks)
Dice 2
1. ... Regenerating ... (regains 2 HP per player attack, excluding bonus attacks)
2. ... Bladed ... (3 extra dmg taken for each round in battle)
3. ... Psionic ... (using artifacts/ability/items deals 6 dmg to the entire party)
4. ... Mutating... (each member of the party takes 4 damage each time a party member deals max damage(highest roll possible))
Dice 3
1. ... Reanimated Subjugglator!
2. ... Wailing Abomination!
3. ... Hulking Commander!
4. ... Distorted Masses!
MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 40/40
If you rolled a 1, take 6 dmg.
If you rolled a 2, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 3, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 4, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 5, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 6, take 3 dmg.
If all party members reach 0hp, look below:
You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,
you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.
Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first, second or third mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.
You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your fourth mini-boss fight, you have reached one of the steering systems! Roll 1d4 in the spoiler below:

1 - The other teams appear to have been successful in their endeavors. There's enough power available for you to reengage the system. The entire room illuminates and roars with life. It's perhaps dangerous to hang around in here too long, but in the meantime the amount of energy in the air makes you feel powerful.
2 - The tendrils of the ship's wiring look like a crime scene, or perhaps a particularly gory nest. Headquarters gives you harried instructions to shut down and isolate the area before the whole ship goes up in flames.
3 - An undead helmsman is still tethered to the center console. They don't have the ability to provide power, but their presence is preventing the back-up systems from triggering. You remove the zombie and the system reengages successfully.
4 - The room is dark and cold, but with instructions from headquarters and the efforts of the teams on the other decks, the system has enough power to reboot itself. The ship begins to thrum with life. It makes your horns tingle and your hair stand on end.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

Kursha's eyes probed the darkness, searching for a target. He had placed Elidae once more on the floor, in order to draw his rifle. By this point in the mission, all of them knew better than to expect anything other than trouble from behind a locked door. A shape moved within the shadows. “From your left! Watch out!” There was the crack of gunfire.

A second shot followed an instant later. The zombie jerked from the impact but otherwise remained unfazed. Both shots had only clipped it. It moved too fast, too irregularly; not to mention Lorata stood in the line of fire. Kursha grimaced. Sucking in his breath, he tried to line up his sights. His fingers could not stop shaking. He was too distracted.

Lorata gagged as soon as the door was open, resisting the urge to throw up then and there. The creature inside, the mutated remains of a juggalo as best she could tell, was probably one of the most horrifying sights and smells she'd faced so far. Its old wounds seemed almost to still be gushing, and when those dead eyes turned their attention on her...

Lorata scrambled for her defensive trinket, pressing in the button and cringing back as the energy shield erupted from the device only just in time to stop a blow that could have killed her.

The yellowblood of course stayed away fro m the fight, barely holding onto consciousness. She could at least move an arm now, wiping away some of her own blood caked to her face. She was a gnarly sight, for sure.If the situation wasnt life or death, she'd probably be embarrassed.

Standing on the sidelines tormented Elidae almost more than the paralyzing pain she had to endure. She wanted to help, she wanted to protect... but she couldn't.

"B-Be careful..." she whispered to her moiral as he left her to do his duty. She wished the same for the other two, but the idea of her losing him had her chest cavity ache much differently.
