Zeylla found herself digging through some boxes stamped with the word 'MILTARY FORTIFICATION EQUIPMENT' across the front. Most of them were empty, and she was about to give up on them and go search somewhere else when she felt something in the pointless packing peanuts(really?). Some small wristbands, with the word proton shield inscribed on the underside. There was a single button with a power symbol on it-straight forward and simple, a pleasant change from the rest of this ship. Zeyllya out the band on her wrist and pressed the button. A humming sound came from the watch and a glowing, semi-transparent shield flickered to life.

How...useful, she thought with a smirk. This would make battles much easier, though it looked like it wouldn't last long, the shields power weakened by age, it's halflife ticking away in this empty hull. At least it would take some hits away from her roughed up body.

The photon shields were a nice addition at least. An extra layer of safety, something good amongst the death riddled hallways. The little glow to the tech was distracting and Nictor was both awed and sort of in pain because the sheen kinda hurt his eyes and reminded him of that ache he was trying very hard to ignore. It was distracted and he was bad about distractions.

But the eeriness of the ship, shadows moving as heads turned and light moved, also startled him. A lot of stuff startled him so he may space for a second because of the headache, but could quickly regain himself, if only because of the prickling unease down his spine and the stray thoughts of is that a crew member over there.

She somehow felt more stable with her chunky heels, even if they sometimes felt like stilts. At Ap-- Bombee's cry of disbelief, the yellowblood frowned before releasing a sigh. "I think, I think I see, um..." Vremea squinted again, unable to fix her glasses and lifting her shield, ready. "There are 12 of them...!" Not as many as there were in the past, but... Still hefty.

Of course then it turned out to be actual daywalkers and not imaginary ones. Nictor had been looking at some of the half torn out wiring, unsure what to think or feel, kind of trying not to too much, when his body went into high alert. It took a few seconds for it to register consciously, but he heard the noise too, and then Bombee confirmed.

Maybe if he didn’t look it wouldn’t be real.

That was of course a stray wistful thought that had literally no pull whatsoever because he whipped around at the warning. He needed to see them, needed to know where and what was here to kill him-

Nictor felt his insides twist as he swayed for a second, the headache spiking at the change of orientation. He went to take a step and perhaps should have waited until the moment of vertido passed because he stepped on some of the stray paneling still tied to the wall and his foot rolled.

Bile pressed at his throat and his staff scraped off the floor as he tried to catch himself without fully letting go, the impact sending stabs of pain through his assorted arm injuries. More importantly was out of body horror he felt. Like he was panicking, knew he was panicking, but wasn’t there to direct it, wasn’t able to act on it properly, just than he had not had good experiences being on the ground with zombies approaching and his staff had tried to escape him and his foot was caught. His movements were sluggish and halting for a second before he was scrambling unsteadily up and trying to untangle his foot without letting go of his staff because he needed that right now, okay.

Zeylla decided to go a bit wild with this fight. The shield made it easier for her to go all out. She had kept the jagged bone as a useful weapon after the last big battle, and now she swung in with a wild violent laugh, and swung her shield into a zombie, his head crushing under the intense force of Zeylla's swing(she wanted one of these, she thought herself). She ignored it's flicker, warning her of its weak state, already moving in to decimate several more of their undead foes with a mixture of fist and makeshift weapon.

Once he'd managed to read everyone's patterns, daywalker and teammate alike, he whipped out his scourge and sent its tails flying through the hallway. The beads easily ripped through the tired, old flesh of their opponents, sending them crumbling to the floor.

This she could recognize with the pale faced Zeylla. She tossed another heal at Zeylla, focusing heavily on the palm of her hand and smiling at her. She knew how to make the other feel better. The yellowblood continued on, only to come face to face with a door. No, wait, not a door-- The door. This one looked familiar. Could this be...?

There was a strain of guilt for being a burden, but Nictor couldn’t actually feel bad for not helping to kill more of the crew. Plus any guild or moral dilemma got superseded by fear for his life and the slow cool down after the danger had passed. Except the danger didn’t pass on these ships, it was around every corner. So the cool down didn’t really happen, more like the panic chose to cool its heels. So it didn’t actually go away so nothing ever truly could filter past in full. And what did got shunted out when the stakes picked up to more immediate peril, thus starting the cycle over.

He did take a second to regather himself before following after the others.

In a distant way, he noticed that as battered and terrible as he felt, functionally he could keep going fine. The aches and pains sucked, sure, but he was well familiar with them. The others were starting to look a little worn and beaten though. Coming to a door, he watched as Hifumi took a second to do that hand glow thing to Alibii. That was the second time now. Hifumi was nice. She was looking after them. But, well, what about her.

Nictor blinked, the notion felt incredibly off beat with how everything else had gone this ship, but, well.

Guess this was happening then because he was stepping up next to her without really meaning to. He shrunk away from Alibii, but haltingly fished the trinket he’d had on him out of a pocket.

“A-ah, uh, h-h-here,” Nictor said quietly, tensely handing it over before shuffling closer to the door, something to distract himself from the strange awkwardness of interaction lacking his usual litany of thoughts. Instead he took the chance to test the mechanism.

“I-uh, I th---ink, uh, it’s l-locked but uh, th----ere’s s-something else t---oo,” Nictor said, withdrawing to take his trinket back and let Hifumi and Alibii deal with the door.

Zeylla graces Nictor a look after he healed Bellen, but it wasn't her customary bitter stare. It was something that could almost be considered a look of appreciation. It wasn't fully expressed, just the smallest of nods and a softer gaze, but it was there. He had paid attention, and been aware of his squadmates, and especially because he had taken care of Bellen. She was more of a smasher then a healer, and of no use to the adult.

The door before them loomed though, and this time Zeylla knew she could open it. The door was cracked and a reeking smell permeated from its dark chasm-like depths. She easily got a grip and with little to no struggle, she pried the door open.

"Time to prepare for the worst," she crowed as their headlamps pathetically stabbed into the dark depths. There was something moving ahead...somethings.

      Vremea was thankful for the trinket. She was definitely feeling a little worse for wear after that last pack of zombies, and for him to offer the trinket to her so easily almost startled her. She smiled at the yellowblood, patting his shoulder softly before glancing over at Aprife-- He also looked pretty run down. The yellowblood shuffled over to him and pulled out her artifact, pressing it in his hand lightly so the button was pressed against his skin. She looked up at him and gave him a light pat. "Stay... stay safe, okay?"

      Hifumi shuffled over toward the door, checking it out. It was-- "Locked. Okay, I can--" And then, suddenly, Zeylla was slamming herself through and the door opened. But wasn't-- Wasn't there something else...? "I-I... I'll take a closer look..."

The alarm was somewhat startling, sure it was, but Aprife kept a cool head as he peered into the darkness of the room they'd just unlocked. "Don't let the noise throw you off your game," he said. Whether that would fall on deaf ears or not, who knew. "I think I see something in there."

At least he felt considerably better after Vremea's help. She was a good healer, he had to admit.

The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!
You have encountered Preserved Empowered Mutated Elite Troops!

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you've reached one of the propulsion systems! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - It's a mess of disturbingly fleshy wires down here, but they all seem to be connected to a single, monolithic console. Everything is where it should be according to ground control's instructions, so recalibrating the power output is simple enough.
2 - It smells like ash and rot in here. Some of the wires are torn, sparking ominously in the vicinity of a particularly charred corpse. The unit is just draining power like this. With ground control's assistance, you manage to shut down the system and quarantine it.
3 - The room is pitch black. You're only able to discern its purpose through narrow flashlight beams and stumbling over the snaking wires. The console at the center is nothing but a dead-end for the ship's power supply. With instructions from headquarters, you manage to grope around in the dark and quarantine the system.
4 - The room feels like an inferno with how strained the propulsion system is. With instructions from headquarters you're able to alleviate pressure from the unit and reroute power accordingly. The center console already begins to glow less menacingly.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!
