Rummaging around the place was proving fruitless; There was so much going on in both his brain and this room that Mahmud couldn't make heads or tails of anything. Yet one thing stood out to him, out of all the things going on "Hey guys! A first aid kit!"

Excited, he scrambled over there and yanked it open... only for his pumpbiscuit to plunge upon finding nothing but a band-aid. "... well" he finally said, standing up and holding it out to the group. "Its... something."

“It's something,” Ephias echoed, with a trace of pity in his voice. He attempted to offer the orangeblood a sympathetic smile, though it resembled more of a grimace despite his best efforts.

“Do you mind if I hold onto it?” He extended his hand towards Mahmud. When the troll obliged, Ephias removed the wrapper from the bandage. It was bigger than he thought. As they continued down the hall, he experimented with the bandage and armband, the latter emitted short bursts of red light.

Deimos looks to see what's around

HP: 17/20

Deimos did not like being touched on a good day even by people he enjoyed, so having a stranger grab his arm for even a second caused him to stiffen up, eyes narrowing to a near dangerous degree as he stared her down for a few seconds. "I know there's a door here." He hadn't missed it, (okay, maybe he had, he wasn't going to admit that though) he'd just been... focused on getting to the control room.

"Oh good... maybe we can patch up one gerbil bite." He looked to Mahmud, actually managing a snort of a laugh. Despite his bad mood he did find the discovered "treasure" pretty amusing.

The rest of the corridor seemed pretty empty... There weren't even any doors to try opening. What was this hallway for, anyway? His side ached and his prosthetic felt like it was digging into his leg - he really wanted off of this ship, sooner rather than later. Now that was a desire he never thought he'd have. Get off of a spaceship? Puh-lease.

Deimos scouts ahead

HP: 17/20

Control room... control room... it had to be around here somewhere, right? Sure, this ship was a bigger class than the other one's he'd been on but it couldn't be THAT hard to find it. He was so, so sore... With a groan, he turned around to face the rest of the group. They'd passed by a hall at some point that seemed decent enough.

As much as Nahori didn't want to, she went with Deimos's direction only because she thought she could see a door down the opposite hall, the only he'd motioned them towards. Without a word to him, she looked between Mahmud and Degras instead. "Let's check out this door." She had a bad feeling about it. The look on Mahmud's face told her he agreed.

"This has got to be a trap."

By this point, he wasn't even willing to give the door a chance. Knocking on it once for dramatic effect, Mahmud turned back to the others and nodded. He then gave a weary look to Degras. "You... you wanna give it another go?" Despite his track history, he still seemed like the most capable guy for the job.

Ephias could have died under the look Mahmud and the others gave him. Time to suck it up and get with the program. Whatever that meant. He nodded at the orangeblood and approached the door. “If it doesn't work, you can throw me out of the nearest airlock.” Deep breaths, Sagine. He slapped his face between his hands to wake himself up. Focus.

Inspecting the doorframe, Ephias found several grooves in the side. Pinholes for some kind of gas? No... they were covered with a reflective surface. Motion detecting cameras—no, lasers. The trigger would be somewhere else. The redblood busied himself with his examination. After about a minute he unclipped his shears from his belt and went to work. The end result was not pretty, but it should have been effective.

Ephias gestured for the others to stay back. “I'll go first,” he said. Holding his breath, he pushed open the door and stepped into the room. Nothing happened. Nothing except for the sight of an undead cook whipping its head around to face him. “Trap's disarmed, but we have company!”

Just in case there was any doubt.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.

The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!

You have encountered a ...
ENRAGED, BELLICOSE, UNDEAD SHIP COOK!

Dice 1

1. ... Enraged... (-1 to all attacks)

2. ... Jawless... (+1 on accuracy rolls)

3. ... Putrid... (-1 on all accuracy rolls)

4. ... Decomposing ... (+1 on all attacks)

Dice 2

1. ... Skeletal... (-5 miniboss HP)

2. ... Bellicose... (players take 2x the amount of damage on their first turn)

3. ... Armoured... (only 2 players per turn may use a special artifact/ability/item)

4. ... Burning... (take an extra 1 dmg each time you deal max damage (highest roll possible for weapon or damage-dealing skill))

Dice 3

1. ...Undead Ship Cook!

2. ... Mutated Daywalker!

3. ... Zombie Gerbil Pack!

4. ... Daywalker on Fire!

MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 30/30

If you rolled a 1, take 4 dmg.

If you rolled a 2, take 4 dmg.

If you rolled a 3, take 3 dmg.

If you rolled a 4, take 3 dmg.

If you rolled a 5, take 2 dmg.

If you rolled a 6, take 2 dmg. Your attack this turn does double damage.

If all party members reach 0hp, look below:

You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,

you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.

Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first or second mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.

If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.

If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.

If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.

You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.

If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.

If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.

If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you have reached the control room! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the ship away.*

2 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. As the screens boot up however, dozens of red warnings and errors flash across the screen. It seems like there has been critical damage to the ship in multiple places. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.

3- The ship refuses to power on, even after you follow headquarters instructions to make sure they are plugged in, and hitting ctrl-alt-del. It looks like something core is not functioning. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.

4- Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the boarding vessel away.*

If any troll in the party has helmsman authority, they can steer the ship to given coordinates, then return to the boarding vessel with the rest of the team.

Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

For the first time he actually felt somewhat... chipper. Happy. The door thing was a success! With a little spring in his step, Mahmud chirped "I'll go in guys and check it out!" and stepped inside...

Only for his head to slam against the floor out of the doorway again, as yet another undead chef rushed him. <******** ******** ******** ******** ********> How many times? HOW MANY TIMES was he going to get knocked flat on his back by a freaking daywalker? His head was spinning, already he felt like puking, and Mahmud was only separated by something that smelled like some blueblood's... euch, he didn't even want to make that analogy to be frank. Was only separated from that thing because he had quickly raised his feet up to catch the monster. Now he was all scrunched up, knees almost to his chest... <********. OFF" he finally breathed, as he shoved it off with all his might.

But he lay on that floor for a little bit and closed his eyes. Only a little bit just... just enough to get his head on straight again...

“Mahmud!” Ephias charged in after orangeblood. Dropping onto one knee, he slid under and past the daywalker, to skid to a stop by Maymud. After a cursory examination, he determined he was all right. Probably. Ephias grabbed the boy near his elbow. “Come on! You can't stay here,” he said. He took Mahmud by the shoulder and pulled him upright. “That's right. You're fine. Let's go.”

Picking up his shears where he had dropped them, Ephias guided the orangeblood to his feet. Even as he did however, he saw the daywalker dive towards Nahori and Deimos. Crap. He glanced back towards Mahmud.

Using Trinket: Novice Offense Type B - 2d6 Deal double damage on this attack, 1x per battle. 1 ongoing damage for all turns after

Not... not another one of these things. Oh god. Ohhhh god. Deimos was still feeling his wounds from the last undead cook they fought - and this one looked even tougher! He barely managed to block the creature's attack, but in doing so stepped wrong and slipped, hitting the ground hard on one knee. He hissed in pain, only managing to recover enough to shove the creature away as hard as he could. It didn't seem to have much effect at all.

That and he seemed to have pushed it toward Nahori. She'd be able to take care of herself, right?

Who was he kidding? Nahori looked like she'd been dragged through hell and back (honestly, hadn't they?) there was no way she was going to handle that thing. He tripped the beamtube he'd picked up at one of the booths he'd visited in town, feeling it regenerate some of his strength. Forcing himself up off of the ground, Deimos attempted to charge at the creature, mace poised to strike--

But just as he was going to swing, he stepped wrong on his right foot and felt the mechanics crunch. Something was wrong. He lurched to the side, completely missing the monster - all he could do was just try to roll instead of crumpling to the ground.

It was coming her way now. Nahori knew she wouldn't be able to avoid its assault. The others needed a moment to recover and her own legs were wobbling, stiff, useless. Somewhere in her think pan she wondered if the others would consider her weak for this. Probably, but it didn't really matter. She couldn't do anything about it. All she could do now was give them a chance to retaliate.

"Kill it!" she shouted at them, her voice tearing and her willpower the only thing holding her up. Finally her legs moved, but only enough to let her duck down, pick up what was probably once a pretty expensive, large kitchen knife from the remains of the ship's galley floor, and drive it into the daywalker's shoulder. It managed to pin it there temporarily, but only from one side. The other arm swung around as the creature screamed, catching Nahori right across the face.

She went down and didn't move.

So uh... yeah. This thing was a far tougher cookie than their last big enemy, and a far tougher opponent too. Despite wanting to feel bad for it, being dead and once a troll and all, as this thing kicked his a** from back to Chittentonw he felt less and less sorry, and more and more frustrated. Despite his repeated blows, his countless punches, this thing just refused to go down. Mahmud's head was still swimming from his head hitting ground earlier.

When was it going to end?

While he was trying to catch his bearings, a shape crumpled out the corner of his eye. "Wh--" As he stumbled forward a little bit, Mahmud managed to make out the shape of their would-be commander, Nahori, sprawled out on the floor. "Nahori!" Someone... Someone HAD to do something but... he couldn't even get his own head screwed on straight.

Deimos attacks!

HP: 9 - 2 = 7/20
Damage Dealt: 3 x 2 -1 = 5
Using Item: Compressed Mystery Gas on NAHORI (+5hp)

Just as he'd expected, Nahori was easily taken down by the creature. Where was that stuff they'd found earlier-- Degras had it, didn't he? "Degras, give me the gas!" He shouted over the sounds the undead cook was making as it attacked Mahmud. He caught it out of the air, then managed to stumble across the room over to Nahori. Hopefully it wouldn't make things worse.

He ripped the lid off, then aimed it at her face and sprayed. "C'mon, get up, you can't ********' leave us to handle this, ain't military trolls s'posed t'be tough?" Irritation, fear, and anger were getting the best of him. His tone was definitely harsh. "Get y'self together 'fore we all ********' die."

Of course- the creature was coming their way. Of course it was. He pushed himself up, somehow managing to muster enough strength to hit it as hard as he could right in the skull. It veered off to the side toward Ephias, giving Nahori a little more time to deal with the gas he'd just sprayed in her face.
