He was about to comment on the whole “learning to make syrup” deal when Charlie asked if he was alright. For like the millionth time the past month. Either Charlie was absurdly perceptive, or he was declining at an alarming rate. Probably a little bit of both. He wondered how much longer Charlie would take the various answers before he became more aggressive in his questioning. “Still rather full from last night is all. Nothing to worry about.” Granted he could be bleeding out in the street, and he would still say not to worry. That was his job, not other people’s. Other people never needed to worry about him, he was fine. Always. “Though I admit I am a little worried about messing up this day for you. Don’t know of any reason that would happen, but still.” Well, actually he did have a reason to think he might mess the day up, but no need in stating that yet.

Charlie frowned when the other made excuses. No, everything wasn't fine. And he knew that. He was too observant of Lori at this point to take it. At first, he let it go. He figured it'd fix itself. But it continued, and he didn't know what to do. He felt helpless, and like the other didn't trust him enough to just talk. He mulled over what the other said, feeling himself start to shake. Lori was hiding something, and Charlie was going to confess. He wanted to cry. He was too stressed out. He slammed his fork down to get his attention, glaring at him. "Why are you keeping secrets from me? Do you not trust me, Lori?" He asked finally, feeling like he would break down. It was becoming too much, and he was so tired. He can't sleep, can barely eat, and had all in all been a mess for too long. True, he was keeping secrets too. A big secret. He was desperate and worried. "I'm...I'm sorry to snap...." he mumbled, looking down at his food. He was going to ruin everything.

He smiled sadly, “sorry about that. It’s not that I don’t trust you. Quite the opposite really.” He stood up and grabbed and walked into his room, returning momentarily with a manila envelope. He put it down on the table in front of Charlie. “I was going to save it until near the end of the day, but, I’ve kind of been stressing over it, so may as well go ahead with it I guess.” Inside the envelope was a legal document, mostly incomprehensible legal talk, but after a bit of studying one could determine that it was a rework of their contract with the city. Before it had listed Lori as the leader and Charlie as his sidekick. Now they were listed as partners. He sat back down, not sure what Charlie would think. If he was happy with it, that would be an excellent sign, but if he wasn’t, if he wanted to remain a sidekick longer, he would just have to keep leading for awhile longer. That said, even if he accepted the new position, that wouldn’t clear away all of his worries, but it would help out a lot.

Charlie felt a knot in his stomach as he spoke, watching him walk away. He panicked a bit, watching him leave. When he came back, he settled back down, eyes learing down at the folder. What...what was this? His brain went through all the worst case scenarios, opening it up with a shakey hand. He tried to decipher wjat the pages said, eyes glazing over them. Finally, he was able to understand what it said. He...wasn't a side kick anymore? Holy crap. "Lori!" He squealed. He leaped out of his seat to get to the other side, wrapping his arms around Lori in a huge hug. His smile was huge on his face, keeping the other close. "I'm so happy! Partners? Like for real?" He felt his heart beat hard in his chest, laughing and squealing again, full of an unbelievable happiness. He wasn't a sidekick...but they'd still be together.

He watched in anticipation as Charlie read through the document, mainly looking for any change in emotion. He needn't have been so perceptive, the change came out and leapt at him. Charlie about deafened him with the squealing, but at least he was excited about it. "Guess I worried for nothing then." This new arrangement gave Charlie more independence. Before, any job Charlie took, Lori had to be there. Now, Charlie could take and complete his own jobs at his own pace, but they would still work together on the big stuff. Hopefully it would encourage Charlie to become even more independent. "You're an adult now, you don't need me lurking over your shoulder all of the time. Hell, I bet there are plenty of cases you could do on your own easily." It was actually a tremendous weight off of his chest, though how much weight remained to be seen.

Charlie was so excited, over-come with the desire to make Lori proud and to get better as a hero. Of course he wanted to be good for Lori, but he also wanted to protect people: to be the best he could be. He tried his best to be self-less and kind at all possible. "I'll do my best! I'll make you the proudest man alive, I swear!" He said, wrapping his arms around his neck again. He was so excited, though still quite nervous. What was he suppose to do? What if Lori didn't want him around after he confessed? How was he suppose to make him proud then? How was he suppose to make him happy if the confession made him miserable? What if Lori thought he was gross? He felt his hug get tighter, a frown now replacing his smile. What if he didn't want to be partners?

He accepted the hug, even though it was still not very much like him. He definitely had a soft spot for his little sidekick…partner; that was going to be hard to get used to, having him be a full partner. He missed the innocence of it all, but he knew it was something that needed to change. He felt the hug get tighter, and knowing Charlie as he did, he knew that meant something was up. ”What’s the matter? If you don’t want to go this far yet, that’s fine. I just…I thought it would please you, and I think you are ready for it.” He wanted to pull back a bit so that he could look Charlie in the eyes, but the other was holding on too tight for that. He would just have to guess based upon what he could feel and hear.

Charlie frowned as Lori spoke, feeling his heartbeat pound hard against his chest. Everything was changing so fast. He wanted to be Lori's partner, but what if he didn't want to be anymore if he knew? His eyes shut tight, holding onto the other like his life depended on it. He had to do it. He had to do it now, before things got messy. Finally he looked back, a lok of urgency on his face. "I have to tell you something," he said quickly, chewing lightly on his lip. He was nervous, and wanted to cry. But he stayed strong. He held out his pinky toward the other, unable to keep from foing something so childish, even in this situation. "A-and I want you to promise you won't hate me," he said, still frowning. He was really doing this.

This was actually starting to scare the hell out of him. What could have Charlie worried so much? What could be so bad that he had to promise not to hate the kid beforehand? He sighed, “I don’t think there is anything you could do that would make me hate you. Unless you were secretly a serial killer. As long as it isn’t anything too illegal, I won’t be mad, promise.” He wrapped his pinky around the other’s, though it felt weird to him, using such a childish promissory method when the matter was apparently so grave. He couldn’t imagine what would have the kid so worked up, there was nothing he could think of that Charlie could have done that would anger him for even a moment, much less cause him to hate the kid. And he really couldn’t see Charlie as a serial killer, or even a repeat offender of any kind.

Charlie felt a small weight lift off his shoulders at what Lori said, and couldn't help be grin. "Oh, yes, the menacing, blood thirsty Charlie Chambers," he joked a bit, though the lightness was short lived. He wrapped his pinky around Lori's before pulling back, shaking a bit. Well, here it goes. "O-okay. Well, th-there's something I've b-been meaning to tell you, b-but I've been really scared to so...please take me seriously when I say th-this, okay?" He asked, his eyes now moving down to the floor. A light blush painted his cheeks as he closed his eyes as he took a deep breath. Just say it! "I-I've always...really looked up to you. You're my inspiration, and even helped me keep going when I was a kid, wanting nothing more than to be a super hero myself. And...and then...you took me in. I...never thought I'd be so lucky...that I'd be cared for by something I...admire so much. That I...love so much. Someone that I...fell for. Fell in love with. I mean...." He looked back up now, nervous as can be as the sentence he wanted to say finally left his mouth. "I'm in love with you, Lorcan," he said, using his full name to show the weight of the situation, and how serious he was. There. He said it. He finally said it. God, he wanted to vomit.

The levity was short lived, but at least he had managed to calm the kid down at least a little, which was good, right? He really started getting nervous when Charlie made him promise to take it seriously and seemed to have so much trouble saying whatever it was, even having to circle around the fact a few times. Once the truth was finally out, he sighed, but there was no easy emotion behind it. “I never knew I had helped you beforehand. You wouldn’t believe how much that means to me. However, the fact that you love me…I kinda already knew that.” He smiled, but it was sort of awkward and didn’t last for long. “You confessed that a couple years ago, remember? I know you covered it up quickly, playing it off as a joke, but I knew even then that you were serious. I didn’t say anything because I thought maybe, after a bit of reflection, you would change your mind and find someone else.” Now it was his turn to feel awkward, wishing he could shrink away, but knowing there was no way he could do that. He was the long-time adult here, that and he was too big of a presence to shrink away. “At that time, and to this day, I didn’t want you to fall for me because I know you could do much much better than me. Trust me, it is very flattering that you have cared so deeply for me for so long, but…I think you are selling yourself short."

Charlie looked like he had been slapped when the other admitted that he already knew. Charlie was never good at keeping secrets, or his emotions at bay, so he should've known better. However, he was still surprised. As he continued to speak, Charlie had to put his gaze elsewhere in the room, feeling like a total wreck. "I...never could change my mind, Lori. I've tried. I just...I don't want anyone else," he added, his arms going around to hug himself as they spoke, as if comforting himself. He looked over at Lori, finally near the end as if the man had grown a second head. He shook his head. "Better than you? Are you insane? There's no one better than you, Lori. There never has been. You think I haven't tried to...date? Or...flirt or...any of that kind of stuff? It...it never feels right. But, thinking about you it just.... You're my world, Lori. There's absolutely no one I'd rather have than you!" He was having difficulty finding his words,
but tried to spit them out best he could. Finally, he was able to get something out, still nervous. However, this was strangely going better than he expected. Which wasn't really saying much. He was really wondering why Lori would even say that about himself, or about Charlie. Did he not think he was amazing too?

s**t. This was not good news at all. He shook his head. It wouldn’t have been as bad if he was certain that Charlie was just being too avid of a fanboy: and that was definitely a possibility. He had had fans in the past, some of them a bit more exuberant than others, but he had dealt with it and it had worked out in the end. But what Charlie was saying, that was either a really desperate fan crush, or possibly even real love. Neither of which he was looking forward to. “Geez you really have poor taste in men,” he said it with a smile, but it was sardonic more than anything else. “You’ll be ready to settle down for good, and I’ll already have a foot in the grave. I can’t, in good conscience, do that to you.” He couldn’t help but think of his mother, grandmother, and uncle: all people who had found love, probably true love if such a thing existed, but their lover had been taken from them, and they were left to endure kind of alone. Not really alone, as they had all banded together, but without the person who was really more like their other three-quarters than their other half. And none of them had had particularly large age differences, it had just been circumstances that ripped them apart. Maybe if they had been closer in age, it probably would have been likely, but with twenty-three years between them…it was just cruel.

The side of Charlie's mouth twitched into a fleeting smile when Lori told him he had a bad taste in men. He didn't really think so. More of an unfortunate taste. Then Lori brought up the age gap again, and his hand tightened around the heart of his shirt. He couldn't meet the other's gaze. He spoke anyway, desperate. "You think I haven't considered that, Lorcan? I don't care. It...it doesn't matter to me," he said quickly, now finally able to look Lori in the face. "And...and who's to say I won't die first, either? We're super heroes. We could die any day. It isn't a concern for me, Lori, because I want to live life with you. Together," This time, Charlie took Lori's hand in his own two, squeezing, hoping to make him understand. "I can't help that I fell in love with you. And I'm sorry that you have to deal with it, and I know it's not fair to you, but I really, truly love you," he stuttered out, sounding like he was about to cry. His voice was cracking, but he was doing a good job keeping it together.

He really didn’t need to be reminded that heroes died. He was the very first one to hit the scene, and one of the few to have made it so long. They had been his friends, and he had been there when some of them died. That said, the fact that Charlie spoke of it, either he had no concept for what it was like, or he really had come to accept it. The latter being extremely mature. All the while, he couldn’t help but feel like he had seen this before, then it finally dawned on him that he had: when Sam was trying to get into a relationship with his uncle. His uncle had already been diagnosed HIV positive, and had shoved anyone away who tried to strike up a relationship, but Sam had stuck it through. Had marriage been legal then, they probably would have married. He had been there the whole time, watching it all unfold. Hell, he was only nine years younger than his uncle, and about four years younger than Sam. They had practically been his brothers. And then Charlie was holding his hand and apologizing and being more…romantically Carpe diem…no, that wasn’t quite right, but it was kind of spooky yet charming. “Just…give me time, alright? This is a lot more serious than I had thought.” He sighed, "I promise nothing, and of course, you are free to change your mind if you wish,” fat chance of that, sure, but he felt he needed to add that. He wasn’t really sure how to finish what he was saying, maybe he had said enough that the point had gotten across.
