It was actually a bit funny, that Adder had such a concern for data. His main interest was usually languages, but he had a quiet interest in the sciences, as well. He always took his science classes particularly serious. Well, he took everything seriously, but he had annoyed more than a few of his classmates by taking charge in group projects, or at least trying to. Scratching his cheek a bit, Adder looked around, slowing his steps some, before coming to a halt. That odd unown was still floating around, not yet having engaged itself with Lady. Lady, who had now started trying to eat some of the unowns, which was, sadly, a bit typical for her. Adder had so far managed to avoid letting her get very far, but as she defeated one that looked very much like the leter V, she didn’t quite… let go. Her Bite attack quickly started looking a bit like Swallow, and Adder had to rush forward, grimacing a bit as he tried to avoid touching her too much, and pull the pokemon from her mouth. It was a struggle, especially as she seemed to enjoy the attention, and giggled through her mouthful of unown, but eventually he wrenched it out, nearly toppling over as he did. ”Geez, Lady…” he muttered, quickly catching the pokemon. He watched the ball carefully to make sure it worked, then sighed and sent it to the PC.

In fact, given the incense was his best hope at ‘light’, and wasn’t doing very good at that, he was thinking of heading back. Sure, he had a flashlight, but that… might have honestly made things worse. A single beam of light… it might call even more pokemon, or give away his position, and presence, to any lurking ruin raders. Not to mention, it had a tendency to focus attention on what was in the light’s range, and ignore what might be lurking around… he didn’t want more pokemon sneaking up on him.

He was suddenly very aware of his own size, but instead of feeling small, or scared by it, it had probably the opposite direction and bristled a bit. While some might learn to accept their stature for what it was, Adder went the cliché route and remained defensive about it. Having an older brother probably didn’t help, even if Drey was the most chilled and laid back older brother you could have. The only time he was really a pain, was when Adder was being a pain, even if the kid didn’t usually want to admit it at the time. If he was complaining about his parents, or throwing a tantrum, Drey had a tendency to get annoyed or step in, but even then, he usually kept a level head. Meanwhile, Adder just had to think about his own height and he got fired up…

Defensive enough (for no real good reason) to shake off the fear, Adder buckled in on distracting himself to keep busy. Maybe he could go ahead and start strategizing for the next gym, even though there wasn’t exactly a lot he could do about it. He was training up Lady… but she might be weak against fighting due to her dark typing. He would have to check. Still, though, she could probably poison at least one or two pokemon before getting knocked out. Trumbeak was gonna be hard to train here, but it already knew a flying move, so maybe it could do something too. Rowlet, also… not as strong at all, nowhere near it, but it should evolve soon, and it knew a flying move. And a ghost move, so… maybe he could train it some, too? Litten was already pretty strong, but had no type advantages, but he’d be easy to train… And then there was Popplio and Pancake…

Popplio actually… technically had a type advantage, now that he thought about it. He wasn’t exactly eager to battle with her, but she did have a fairy move, and she’d probably evolve pretty soon, too. Well, assuming she behaved. Finally, Pancake, unfortunately, wouldn’t be much use. He might still use her just for the extra money, but she wasn’t exactly easy to train (despite Lick), and she was weak to their opponent. Maybe, though, if he stayed here long enough, he’d try training her some. In the meantime, however, he figured he might want to change it up. Going through his options, he ultimately went with Rowlet, and gave him Lady's Choice Band. He called Lady back, though let her stay with Pengyou, who seemed less than pleased by the company. His fur bristled at her smell, despite the attempted masking of the air freshener. It didn’t help that she kept leaning over to try and…. Sniff him…

Pengyou let out a hiss as Lady promptly opened her mouth, leaned over, and attempted to engulf him. He leaped aside, then bolted around to hide on the other side of Adder, who didn’t seem to be at all paying attention. He’d recalled Trumbeak after getting the item for Rowlet, and even with the newer, weaker pokemon battling, he was kind of distracted. He healed Rowlet up, but soon focused his attention on what he’d already decided to busy himself with—research. If he really was going to try and challenge the next gym with his current pokemon… he was going to have to try and make sure they had the best moves possible…

... Which was going to be hard… Rowlet didn’t really have anything he could teach it. He might have to make it a throwaway pokemon, or something. Pengyou already pretty much had the best move he could get, but maybe he could teach Popplio something? Much as he hated to admit it, she really was a good bet against this gym. Even if he wasn’t sure he’d be able to train her up much before trying to challenge it. After looking, though, she didn’t have a lot of options either, though…. Maybe he could teach her acrobatics? It could do a lot of damage, especially if he got her up a few more levels to raise her stats… He hoped he could find somewhere to buy that before the gym.

So, he could teach Popplio Acrobatics, maybe, and…. Maybe Trumbeak? He really hoped Trumbeak could learn more. It evolved… relatively soon. It might be worth trying to train it to evolve. In the meantime, it could at least learn Aerial Ace and Fly, not that he had that HM. Brave Bird, too, but… that was a bit of a kamikaze move. He wasn’t sure he wanted it learning that unless it was a last ditch effort. Maybe if he couldn’t get it to evolve in time… ”Hey, kid!” Adder jumped at the sudden voice, whipping around with wide eyes. Some older man was walking over, frowning a bit as he looked Adder over. Was he some sort of archeologist or something….?

Glancing back, Adder quickly healed up Rowlet again and threw a pokeball, before turning around and facing the guy, straightening his shoulders despite a noticeable height difference. Pengyou finally stopped in trying to dodge Lady’s bite attempts, and even the grimer paused to look up from her pursuit at the man’s appearance. ”What are you doing here, kid? This place is dangerous, don’t’ you know?” the man remarked, looking genuinely concerned, ”We’ve had a lot of reports of the unown casting illusions to torment people that come in here.” Adder frowned. ”I haven’t seen any illusions,” he stated stubbornly, ”Unless you’re one. Are you?” The man looked taken aback, then dropped his shoulders, a bit lost for words. ”Me? N-no, of course not… I just come here with my pokemon to train on occasion, and warn trainers…” he replied uncertainly. That caught Adder’s interest. ”You have pokemon?” he queried. They must be around the same level to bother training here, too….

Adder rolled his eyes a bit at the situation, but threw a ball to catch it, before turning to address the man. ”Battle me,” he demanded, earning another surprised look from the gentleman. ”I… beg your pardon?” he stuttered. Adder shrugged. ”Battle me,” he repeated with a hardened expression, ”I need to train my pokemon, and you do too, right?” he pointed out. Adder was 800% sure he did not need looking out for, but if anything, this battle would hopefully prove that, and change the guy’s mind. Either way, his pokemon would get training. He paused, though, when the guy held something out, and handed it to him. ”Use this on your Rowlet, first, at least. It’ll make training easier,” he muttered, eying Adder warily. The boy paused, then looked back at Rowlet, before leaning in to get a better look. ”…. Oh. I have one of those,” he muttered, drawing back. The man sighed. ”Well, then, you should use it to teach your Rowlet Ominous Wind. It will make training faster, especially if you have a Choice Specs,” he replied warily. Adder paused, then turned, pulling out the Big Mushroom to hesitantly follow the man’s advice. He walked over, but jumped as Rowlet hopped to look at him, before—beginning to glow. His eyes widened. His pokemon was… finally evolving!? YES! It took long enough, though… But, it was still the first starter he had to evolve. He grinned, then leaned down as the light faded, offering the heartscale out. ”Good job, Dartrix,” he congratulated, ”Guess you earned this, then. Use it to learn Ominous Wind, alright?” he urged, making a bit of a face as the pokemon promptly ate it. Hopefully that…. Worked…

Straightening up, Adder turned back to the man, pulling up Trumbeak’s pokeball. He didn’t really care what the guy sent out, this was the pokemon he needed to train. ”Alright, I’m not gonna be using my Dartrix, so go ahead and send out your first pokemon!” he demanded, wanting to make it clear he had no intention of stopping the training going on even during the battle. The older man sighed, but nodded, sending out a cyndaquil in response. Adder inflated a bit. That wasn’t going to be too hard. He took a quick second to get his pokemon ready, then,”Alright, Trumbeak, use Rock Blast!” he ordered.
