Larvesta’s Giga Drain appeared to be able to handily dispatch the dual type of Rock/Ground that Onix possessed. That would be a good sign against Roark, who held two Pokemon with that type combination. The added speed of the Choice Scarf made sure that victory was all but assured against the first gym leader. The sooner he would be able to challenge him the more renown he would gain from the victory. Defeating a gym leader with much lower leveled Pokemon would simply show that he had a far superior strategy. He was eagerly awaiting the time when he would have a chance at challenging the leader of Oreburgh’s gym.

Staying in the mines for his training he realized that the most powerful Pokemon around Oreburgh were present inside the mine itself. That made things easy on him as he needed to do less wandering around the outskirts of town. Down here he could simply be alone and wait for the Pokemon to come to him. Of course he ran the risk of being under a constant swarm of Zubat’s but he was prepared for a risk like that, Oblivion Wing would make short work of the pesky bat Pokemon. The training portion of his journey seemed to be going well but that had yet to be proved before he had faced his first real challenge, a gym leader.

The mine had proved to be a great training ground for his Larvesta, although extremely weak to rock type attacks he would make sure that her opponents had no chance to use them. In chess and in Pokemon training sacrifices had to be made towards the greater good, but he wanted to stop his Pokemon’s fainting if at all possible. He wanted them to be able to rely on him as much as he relied on them to help him achieve his goals, if he sacrificed them at every whim they might not be as willing to do the same when the time came for them to give back.

As he explored the mine further he managed to slip past some of the workers and work his way deeper into the mine. Here there were more powerful Pokemon to be battled as well as a better environment to train in. Although a mineshaft wasn’t his preferred area to train in he had to deal with what he had, hoping that the next city he went to would have a better area to train in. Pushing his way through the cave he imagined what training would be like in a place other than a stuffed, dirty coal mine.

King had trained enough to be able to crush this Rock typed leader. He had no idea what to expect once he entered the gym but he would be relying on his Pokemon and his strategy to be able to pull him through. Exiting the mine and heading towards the Pokemon Center he healed up his Pokemon and steeled himself for the upcoming battle. He was hoping that Roark would be able to provide a better challenge than the miners, and more than the Zubats.
Entering the gym he was unwilling to relent or show any compassion towards any trainer standing across from him, gym leader or not. Flaring his cape as wide as it could go he stood at the challenger’s end of the gym and proclaimed,“I have come to take the Coal Badge from you! You have little choice, as Gym Leader you lack the option of surrendering. I feel sorry for you! Prepare to be defeated!” His voice echoing from the mask as he emphatically spoke, his hand gestures deliberate and showy, King was ready to battle the first gym leader in his way.

Roark had been working in his little dig site unearthing a new fossil to add to his collection when he was abruptly interrupted by a thundering voice issuing him a challenge. The man straightened slowly, turning and adjusting his glasses to get a better look, intrigued by the rather authoritative voice that had called him out. His challenger wore a mask and his rather regal outfit was adorned with a long billowing cape. How fascinating... Roark gave a weary smile and wiped the sweat from his brow with a light sigh. "Well then! That's quite the challenge if I ever heard one." He chuckled warily, stepping up and onto the battlefield, taking his place opposite the challenger and dusting off his hands before taking a pokeball from his belt. "Cranidos, let's go buddy!" Cranidos, a pure rock type. He wouldn’t want to risk losing Larvesta so soon, and he wanted to feel this one out before sending out Piplup. He was going to see what type of advantage he could gain by starting out with Snorunt. “Ha! A fossil like that can’t stand up to my power! Snorunt, let’s do this.” Tossing out the small shivering Pokemon he flourished his hand out and waved two fingers in a ‘get some’ motion, Roark would take the first move in this battle.

Roark smirked at the masked trainer's comment. "We'll see about that!" He retorted boldly, all too eagerly accepting the mysterious figure's taunt and taking the opportunity to move first. "Cranidos, I think we should show this guy how to properly use your head." Roark chuckled, and the little dino snorted in agreement, charging for the small shivering ice type and smacking into it with his thick skull. The poor timid looking Snorunt didn't even have a chance to attack back, unsurprisingly flinching from the hard hitting attack.

Snorunt couldn’t handle the attack, it was a good thing he didn’t start with one of his stronger Pokemon, it would be a tough battle for anyone, and it looked like Cranidos wasn’t about to let King’s Pokemon get away without a fight. Putting his hand on his hip he snorted, “I’ll let you have that one, don’t get used to knocking my comrades around like that Roark. You shall be in for a rude awakening. Roark couldn't help but shake his head in dismay. "I think that if you count all your gems before they're unearthed, you'll be disappointed when you find out what they're worth." Roark said sagely, though he couldn't help but grin widely seeing that he had vastly turned the tables. He couldn't lose focus now though, he had to follow his own advice, keep his head in the game until the very end. Only then was cause for celebration. Cranidos was quickly pelted with an Ice Shard and Roark grimaced, knowing that ice had to sting, but he believed in Cranidos. They weren't nearly finished yet! "Shake it off buddy, we can get through this! Headbutt again!" Roark commanded, knowing he probably couldn't make the Snorunt flinch a second time, but it was their strongest attack, so it was worth it either way.

Ice Shard had done it’s damage. Cranidos reeled from the attack but took the offensive shortly after again, Roark was attempting to lecture King on something about counting his eggs before they hatched. But victory had been assured the moment Roark stepped across the gym from the masked trainer. Cranidos attacked back with another head butt, Snorunt couldn’t handle too much more abuse, but he wasn’t done yet. “Hmph, is that all,” opening his arms out he flared his cape again, “come at us again, if that’s the best you might have to reconsider your strategy boy!” Calling on the attack, he knew Snorunt was slower than Cranidos, so they would have to wait their turn to counter attack.

Roark grinned and shook his head. "We're just getting started." He turned to Cranidos and nodded to the little dino. "I think we've got this one now, go ahead and headbutt it again." Roark urged. Cranidos didn't need to be told twice, and rushed towards the shivering Snorunt to try and finish it off. They were pretty close, just as Roark had said, but the ice type was still barely holding on somehow.

Snorunt was on his last legs, and he probably only had one attack left in him. He may as well make it a good one, “Ok Snorunt, let’s finish strong! Powder Snow!” Attempting to launch a last ditch effort to slow down Cranidos he was relying on freezing the Pokemon, giving Snorunt some more time on the field. The shivering little guy unleashed a flurry of light, powdered snow towards Cranidos, hoping to slow him up. The snow wasn’t thick enough to freeze the dinosaur, effectively ending Snorunt’s time on the field. “Not yet! One more! Ice Shard before you go down little lady!” Snorunt had the speed for two attacks it seemed, that would be enough to give him a shot at taking this guy down. Whatever attack came next would be the end of Snorunt, tragic.
