When she was finally ready, Riley made her way to the gym. She put Mochi and Vanyel away so it was just Seul at her side when they entered. "Whew, it's kinda creepy in here." Although it reminded Riley of the haunted house she had found Vanyel in, so it wasn't that bad. Her determination to get stronger so she could find Mael, beat him up, and get her pokemon back, helped her to feel brave.
She saw a figure before her, suspiciously bright and pink. "Hello?" she called out warily. "Ho ho ho! You are challenger, non?" The figure spun around in a flourish of grace and sparkles. "Yeah. Are you really the gym leader?" Riley didn't sound so sure. "Ho, of course! I excel in both the fabulous contest and pokemon battles. I am la perfection for both. I show you this!" A pokeball appeared in Fantina's white-gloved hand. She tossed it high to release a powerful looking Drifblim. "Okay. You've got this Riley," she breathed to herself. "Seul, let's prove how strong we've gotten!" "Sol!" Seul leaped forward, head down with his scythe toward the foe.

Fantina was strong, but how strong was Mael? Riley thanked Fantina and left the gym towards the pokemon center. "Don't care," she said aloud. Even if we're not strong enough, we're going to go get Nima and Moel back.

Riley walked into the pokemon center and gave her pokemon to Nurse Joy. While she was waiting, she went to use one of the center's video phones to call the Officer Jenny from Crown City, where she had first met Mael. The blue-haired officer's face popped up on the screen. There were trees and buildings in the background; it looked like she was using a portable phone. "Officer Jenny?" Riley asked, more to confirm Jenny remembered her than to check that it was an Officer Jenny. They did all look kinda the same.
"Oh! If it isn't Riley. How have you been?" She sounded so friendly. "I've been okay. I just got my fifth gym badge, so I've gotten a lot stronger..." Officer Jenny looked impressed. "Wow, your fifth? When I saw you last, you only had one!" Riley nodded, trying to look cheerful (it wasn't too hard). "Yeah, I've been trying hard with my pokemon. Um, so I was wondering...have you heard anything about Ma- er, about that thief?" The woman suddenly looked sad. "Riley, I hope you're not planning on doing anything dangerous."
It was hard to not look guilty.
"I'm not. Um, I just, you know, want to know. Because of Noel and Nima. He has my pokemon." Riley felt bad throwing the guilt card out there, but if it got Officer Jenny to tell her something, anything, she wouldn't regret it. "I'm sorry Riley, we haven't been able to catch him yet. We think he went south, but that's it." Riley had a feeling Officer Jenny was leaving something out. "Okay. So stay away from Jubilife City then?""Maybe. He was heading towards Oreburgh so- oh, my! I can't tell you any more. I'll call if anything happens." She quickly hung up. Riley stood holding the phone. Oreburgh, huh? Or maybe he was going to the mountains?

Riley got her pokemon back from Nurse Joy and left the pokemon center. She let Seul out to walk with her. As much as she wanted to go to Oreburgh as soon as possible, she knew she should probably get something to eat first. Riley stopped and bought herself a sandwich and stuffed a bottle of water under her armpit. She ate as she walked, heading for one of the city's many parks. There was a good isolated spot with a bench so she sat down, putting her water by her side. She let out all of her pokemon, pouring food out for each of them. "Good job battling, guys. You did really...um, Vanyel?" Wait, had Vanyel evolved? Whaaaat!? "I'm glad you evolved. You've gotten a lot stronger. You all have." Riley sat back, drinking her water as she looked at all of them now munching happily away.

"Kuraz." The Lucario looked up from the piece of pokefood he was squinting at."What, human?" He sounded bored. "I wanna go after Mael." Kuraz immediately stepped closer. "You know where he is?" He sounded a lot less bored now.
Riley tilted her head to the side. "Kind of. He was seen around Orebrugh City and Jubilife." Kuraz crossed his arms. "Then we should be on our way immediately." Riley looked at him sideways. "You never did tell me...why exactly are you chasing him?" Riley knew Kuraz had said Mael was a former aura user (however "former" even worked) but she felt like there had to be more to it. "..." Riley thought Kuraz was going to ignore her when he finally said, "He took something important. I must get it back." Riley shifted back, leaning into the bench. "He's a real jerk, isn't he?"

Riley jumped when Kuraz suddenly spoke. "Our home is not large," he began, voice holding a hint of longing. "But there pokemon and human live in harmony. It is not like these cities, where humans live cloistered away save for those they keep trapped in their cages." Kuraz glanced at the pokeballs at Riley's hip. "I have come to understand your ways, and though they are not bad, I still prefer my own." Riley kept quiet, feeling like if she talked Kuraz wouldn't say any more. This was the most he'd talked about himself...ever.

Kuraz shifted uncomfortably, as if he'd just realized that he was telling Riley things he hadn't meant to say. After a moment he kept going. "It has always been tradition for the heirs to be guarded by aura users." At this, Riley tried her best to keep quiet, but she had to ask. He said it so matter-of-factly, but could he really mean it? "Heirs?" Kuraz leveled her with his gaze. "Yes. A human and pokemon, always. Together. The princess or prince. Protected by their knights." Riley was fascinated. She hadn't imagined a place like that existed. Where was it, anyways? Some hidden valley somewhere, surrounded by mountains? Did they live in the wild, or buildings? It took everything she had to not ask Kuraz all her questions.

Out of the corner of her eye, Riley noticed Zeke attempting to fly over for a hug now that he was done eating. Seul, having noticed what Kuraz was saying, made sure that Zeke didn't interrupt them. Kuraz continued. "I was...one of those knights." Was? What happened? But Kuraz wasn't talking about that right now. "Most knights are lucario like me. It is rare for a human to be able to use aura, so when Mael was born, I- we were so excited. To have a human and lucario both serving as knights to the two heirs...we believed it meant prosperity for us." Kuraz fell silent. Riley wanted to reach out, but hesitated. He'd been silent a long time when she finally asked, "What...happened?" Kuraz growled at her. "Mael betrayed us, that's what happened! He disrespected our teacher, he ruined everything. I trusted him and he betrayed me!" Riley wavered, breath caught in her throat, his sharp eyes huge in her vision. Still, she didn't step back. "Oh."

"Kuraz, I-""Sol!" Seul barked suddenly, jumping to his feet. His white fur stood on end, and his eyes darted left and right angrily, as if looking for danger. "What? What is it Seul?" Kuraz shook his head and looked around. "I sense...something." Riley looked around, but didn't really see anything. "Do you think it could be-wah!" The ground beneath RIley's feet disappeared, replaced by a constantly changing swirl of color that looked like a pool of strange air. Her arms flew up, as if that could keep her from falling. Seul jerked and dove for Riley. "Sol!" He leaped in after Riley, following her into the portal. They both disappeared into the murky surface.
Mochi hurried to the portal, chittering. She examined the edges, frowning at how odd it felt. Well, there wasn't any point waiting here. "Infernape," she said. Zeke immediately flew in, followed by Niko and Hubble. Kuraz and Mochi jumped in together, leaving Vanyel by himself. The kirlia tapped hesitantly up to the edge, rubbing his hands together nervously. Seul was down there, though, and he'd decided he wasn't afraid of ghosts or things like it, so he slid in.

The dimensional portal ripped itself back open and spat Riley out. She just barely managed to land on her feet, Seul just behind her. A moment after they arrived, Seul glowed and reverted back to his normal form, the wing-like tufts of fur on his back shrinking until there was nothing left. A tiny, colorful stone popped out. Riley picked up the absolite, marveling at the grass by her feet. "It's so good to be back. I was worried we'd never...Was this how you transformed, Seul? You were so strong." Riley took a deep breath. Despite everything, she hadn't forgotten what she needed to do next: Mael had been seen near Oreburgh city, and she had to get there as soon as possible. No time to stop. "We're going to get Noel and Nima back, Seul." Seul, still a little confused from everything, stepped forward. Riley had just been through a lot, and he wanted her to take a break, but before he could say anything Riley returned him to his pokeball. Riley released Zeke next. "Hey, Zeke. We're back, buddy." She rubbed his head. "We're going to go get Noel and Nima." Riley climbed on his back and they set off for Oreburgh city.

Landing in Hearthome, Ajicka landed heavily, frowning. She had awkwardly, evasively bid farewell to her starter back at the fair, and she had Deoxys teleport her and ZK further up in Sinnoh, before she came back here with Fearow. She and the zoroark would meet up later, when she'd done more badges, so that he didn't have to try and keep up with her. She was feeling… more annoyed than usual. Not just irritated, or rather, not as though something had happened that annoyed her. But rather an impatient, boiling frustration. She wanted… She wanted to do more. She wanted to move forward. She was only halfway done with Sinnoh, and while she had originally fully intended to go through each region, train pokemon through each of the gyms…. It was feeling monotonous. Endless. Repetitive.
Directionless.
For a while, she wasn’t even certain that she would challenge the Elite Four. But now, just halfway through the next region, it was beginning to take over her thoughts. It was a new challenge. And it wasn’t like she had to become champion if she won. And even if she did become… champion, it wasn’t like that paralyzed her. She was pretty sure she could still travel and train pokemon so long as she was able to travel back in the instance of a challenger arriving. Especially since she had Deoxys, who could literally just teleport her back in the case of an emergency.
So, then… did that mean… she was going to do this? She was going to try and take on the Elite Four? …. Maybe eventually. She wouldn’t do it here, she didn’t have the right time. And she wasn’t stupid—she knew that the team you went in with was probably the team you defended your position with. Which meant she needed to get the right team. She needed to get the right team together. She needed to be methodical. And… she needed to do some research.

Lifting her head up, she turned, reaching back to give Fearow an appreciative pat. It was honestly nice getting to still fly now and then. She recalled him as he pulled back and looked at her, then looked about, before heading to the pokecenter. She would let her pokemon out, perhaps talk with Elle, figure out her best course of action.
She strode inside and made her way to the cafeteria, and released her pokemon once she had got food for all of them, and took a seat herself. She didn’t exactly get started on the sandwich sitting on a tray before her, though. Instead she started pulling out her materials to try and begin reading, particularly on the rules of the Elite Four. She noticed Elle slide into the booth across from her, but, for the moment, ignored her pokemon, even though she was well aware that the gardevoir was watching her as she ate her own meal.
Only one mega evolution per active team when challenging the Elite Four… That would be good to keep in mind. Honestly, she’d probably use Jas. He was the mega she had had the longest. She may still consider which one to use, though, and revise his moveset some. More importantly, though, was figuring out the rest of her pokemon. Lifting her head, she looked over at the computer, then, after a moment, got up. She glanced back at Elle. ’Do you want to come?’ she asked, automatically assuming the gardevoire was in her head.
Of course, she was right. Elle perked up, then quickly stood. ’Sure!’ she agreed, following after Ajicka. The girl wasn’t very affectionate, or even expressive, but on some level, there was an appreciation for Elle. She was… probably her best friend, even if she was also her pokemon. They knew each other, and they’d been through enough together… Even for someone like Ajicka, the friendship was essentially unavoidable. Besides…. She valued Elle’s opinion.

Sitting down, she looked up more information on the Elite Four, mostly to make sure what she had just read was up to date. Once that was confirmed, though, she started looking through her pokemon. If she was going to go for any region, she was going to go for Kanto, but she wasn’t about to tailor her pokemon team to them. No, she was going to pick the pokemon she wanted as her ’Ultimate’ team, and go with them, and then figure out how to best use them to take down the Elite Four. Jas was, of course, automatically on the list. There was another particular pokemon that she hadn’t really trained, though, that she was interested in. Tynamo, the one that Elle had caught back in Chargestone Cave. It looked like it was pretty decently strong…. So she might as well try training it. She frowned a bit. Hopefully Jolteon wouldn’t be annoyed…
’I’m sure she’ll understand, Ajicka,’ Elle reassured her, flashing a smile. The girl glanced back at her, frowning a bit, but gave a nod. Hopefully… At least she wouldn’t have to worry about being defeated because a strong challenger came around. She looked back to the computer, tapping her finger. Metagross was most likely going to be on her team too… And Maybe Swampert, for that matter. So that was four of them…. Ajicka glanced back to her books, and then quickly walked over, grabbing a notebook and a pencil, and striding back. She quickly dropped back down, and started writing out the possible movesets. She wanted to make sure she had her range covered, but that she was also setting her pokemon up to defend themselves. After all, even if she was defending herself as champion, she still wanted to try and win through tactics and skill.

Well, she would tackle that later. Speaking of tackling things, though, she should probably get this region done. Frowning, she looked back towards her pokemon.
