Zak immediately dropped his hands when Ashley gave him 'permission'. He frowned at the insistence, though. He was about to ask if he could have a smoke, too, but Ashley moved forward, and Zak just had time to try and jerk away and throw a hand up, barely deflecting the hit and not exactly dodging sufficiently to completely avoid getting clipped on his head. He dropped his hand onto his head, keeping it bowed a moment, cursing in muffled Russian, before he slowly turned to glare up at him. "Zat vas a mistake," he stated, his accent bleeding in, thick as ever, though he didn't seem to care. Again, it wasn't a threat-- it came off more like a statement.
And indeed, as he said it, a figure dropped down from a nearby tree, a Xatu teleporting in beside it, the pokemon's eyes fixed on Ashe, before they began to glow. The pokemon was attempting to fully infiltrate his mind, and obscure, or even take over, his actions.

Ashley stared as Zak burst into a flurry of muffled cursing, gaze narrowing immediately. Was that…. Russian? Honestly, he couldn’t help the bit of a sneering smirk that crossed his face at this revelation, even as Zak looked up and informed him of his ‘mistake’ with the full extent of his accent.
"A Russkie…," he remarked, snapping to attention though as another figure dropped from the shadows of a nearby tree with a pokemon appearing at its side; a Xatu? Ashley made a bit of a face, glancing back at Zak briefly in disappointment for this sudden intrusion before noting the glowing and a suddenly pressure seeming to try and lurk into his mind in that moment.
"Alphonse," he hissed, the Audino immediately falling to attention and narrowing a look of his own before unleashing a snowy flurry of a blizzard to obscure and distract if possible while his trainer tried to compose himself.

Zak didn't seem at all fazed that he'd been "found out", and started climbing to his feet as Ashe's attention darted to the new arrivals. Or, well... the newly revealed, arrivals. Zak had felt them creeping in on his thoughts, listening to the conversation, observing the whole shindig, and didn't exactly appreciate how far they had let things go. But, this was Imperium. It was how they worked. They got information, and they learned as much as they could. They tried to keep their workers safe, but.... a little 'well earned' danger, wasn't exactly something they rushed to remove.
As the man seemed to struggle with, what Zak could only assume, was an attempted possession, or something akin to it, he stepped forward to wrench the gun from the Frenchman's hands. With enough determination that even if there was resistance, he would take the time to get it free, before turning and tossing it into the air. Meebus hovered a moment, but, just as it started to fall back down, swept forward, charging it with enough electricity that the gun burst, Zak already grabbing his own, empty gun, and striding back towards his things. "I'll let you two handle zis," he drawled to the hooded figure and its pokemon. "Accent," the, apparently, young woman reminded, a frown just visible beneath the hood. The Russian sneered and rolled his eyes, turning towards his bag. "He won't remember." But, the accent was gone. And after sweeping up all his belongings and stuffing them back in his bag, so was Zak.

- Ashley let out a sharp growl as his gun was snatched, grip tightening on the handle on reflex. There were very few things on the face of this planet that he would actively fight for; his guns fell right on that list. Plus, given the situation, it probably wouldn’t end well to lose it. Still though, with the disadvantage of a psychic assault the struggle just wasn’t as much as it should’ve been, and he hissed his own string of French cursing as his gun was ripped from his grip.
Ashley braced himself, expecting to take a bullet in that moment as he winced against the mental manipulation. Instead though, his eyes went slightly wide in shock at the sight of the gun being charged and blown to pieces. <******** what. What. Honestly, he was stunned. And… pissed. Incredibly so. Of course, he found himself focusing against another string of psychic attacks before he could instigate anything for the destruction of his property. ******** then. He narrowed his gaze to the hooded figure and the Natu, a clear look of cold hatred right behind the frames of his glasses. Not that it phased the individual; which given the interactions so far, was a standard in this odd organization. He buckled a bit, glaring again in disgust. "Alphonse, now." Alphonse noticed and again launched an attack at the pair, this time in the form of fire. It gave Ashley just enough leeway to pull his concealed gun and without hesitation fire on both the hooded figure and her pokemon. He didn’t bother to wait and see the results, instead ducking and snatching his case and a Cassiel hovering near it.
As much as he wanted to stop and confront and punch a b***h once or twice, he didn’t have the capacity to face off with psychics; and even he wasn’t that destructive. Though he had shot at them so… well. Eventually he’d cleared what he felt was a good distance, straight back into town and into a more crowded area. He tucked his gun away back into it’s concealed place, hand absently floating over the empty space on his holster at his side. ******** stopped and set his things on a bench, glancing back as Alphonse toddled his way up as well. The mega looked semi-concerned for his trainer, but Ashley simply waved it off, regaining his breath while keeping a lookout. Cassiel gave a chirp and he rubbed the little fox on the head before returning him for the time being. He’d seen more than enough action at this point.

Zak wasn't particularly enthused to resume training, and in fact, he had sort of been kicked out of his training spot. He rubbed his hands over his face, deflated his basketball, and yanked a shirt out to tug on. Mudkip trotted away at his heel, looking up expectantly, as he recalled Deys and Rufflet. He absently tossed Meebus' empty pokeball in one hand, but didn't recall the Rotom as he wandered for another training opportunity. "You vere a terrible distraction, by ze vay," he drawled, not looking at the ghost pokemon as it floated down to drift beside him. "I am sorry, Zak-hav," replied Meebus with his usual monotone, simple voice that the communicator provided. The Russian eyed him with a sneer. "You are eizzer a terrible liar, or ze vorst subterfuge pokemon I have ever met," he remarked, unamused. His gaze slid over to a sudowoodo failing terribly to blend in with some of the buildings, standing in an alley. He sighed. "Mudkip..." he directed lackadaisically.

Watching with annoyance, despite the victory, Zak kept his distance from the battling. Mudkip seemed to know what she was doing, so he kept his gaze on her, but his focus on the floating pokemon next to him. "So.... How is you know so much, Meebus?" he asked in a low drawl, expression unreadable, for the moment. His ability to keep a neutral facade seemed to still be carrying over from his little... encounter, with Ashley. Meebus, however, turned, looking to Zak and blinking. His appearance shuddered slightly, but as per usual, he didn't seem to acknowledge it. "What do you mean, Zak-hav?" Finally, the Russian turned, narrowing his eyes on him. "You know vhat--""Accent," the pokemon reminded simply. Zak's eyes narrowed further. "... What I mean. On more than one occasion, you've... said things you shouldn't know. That I know I haven't told you. Or done things as if you knew it was the right thing to do.... You're a very convenient pokemon." His voice dripped with heavy, suspicious sarcasm as he confronted his pokemon, but the rotom's expression remained as passive and unresponsive as ever. In fact, he didnt even respond. Slowly, Zak's expression twisted into a sneer. "How is it you know so much, Meebus?" he insisted coldly, a growl to his voice, despite the loss of his accent.

Zak's head was still reeling some after his conversation with Meebus. He wasn't a genius by any standards, but he liked to think he was a pretty sharp guy, given what he did, and just how long he'd managed to survive, doing it. But for some reason, he was having a hard time wrapping his head around everything. What Meebus had explained wasn't even complicated, or difficult to understand, and most of it, Zak already knew. How it related, what Meebus was really revealing, however.... It was just, still processing.
Totodile had let himself out to join the other water starter in battling, laughing maniacally, and earning a curious stare from the mudkip, who he seemed to otherwise ignore. Zak managed to drag them both away from training, to head back into town, figuring he could probably just tackle the gym, and get out of there to get somewhere.... more open. Somewhere new, to recollect himself. Meebus continued floating next to him, staring straight ahead as if nothing had happened, and the Russian found himself eying the pokemon from the corner of his vision. Questions prodded his mind, but somehow, he couldn't bring himself to ask any of them. Well... almost any of them.
".... How do I know you're not just pulling my leg vith this...." he muttered in a low voice, though of course, he knew. Something about... everything in Meebus' behavior, in the way he'd answered the questions he did have, in everything he said, told him everything was true. Meebus didn't look at him. "... You do not," he replied simply, but it was so matter of fact, so detached, Zak got the impression.... Meebus already knew that he did. He scowled a bit and looked away, before shaking his head. He fell into a contemplative silence, subconsciously making his way to the pokecenter to heal his pokemon, before going to the gym.

Zak used some of his winnings from that Egg hunt to buy a few heartscales. He was... trying not to be distracted, but honestly, his heart just wasn't in this battle. Neither was his head. He kept thinking over what Meebus had said, and what the implications were. He wasn't the sort to want to... know things, but some of the things the rotom had implied in the past... it got him thinking. One thing that stuck out was that Meebus, for all his advice givings and information hand outs, had not told him how to process or go forward with this information. He hadn't told him not to ask questions, or to listen to him when he warned him, or to stay calm or to understand or.... anything. He just let him process it on his own. And on some level.... that was just as unsettling, because Zak knew, that had to come from knowing him well. Knowing him really well. They'd been together for a quite a while, sure, but... there had always been a distance. And Zak was starting to realize, that distance had likely only been due to his own suspicions....

Whatever... ness he'd just realized, and was processing, was just getting in the way at this point. He could just.... download it in the background, so to speak. Defeating a gym leader's pokemon with just two of your own was an impressive feat, and Maylene let it be known that her respect had been earned by bowing to her, tall, challenger. She didn't remain in that position for long, however, and hopped up to hand Zak his prizes, which consisted of a badge and a TM. "Keep hitting hard! You'll surely reach the top!" Maylene chirped out a fighting style constructed advice, gave one last bow, then left to have her team healed and return to her workout.

Zak stared blandly at Maylene with her advice, taking the badge and TM, and looking down at them. He gave a short look back up to her, before dropping his hand as he watched her leave. Zak rubbed his shoulders and stretched some to warm up, before dropping into position to start kickboxing the hung bag. It wasn't so much that he was angry, or had any aggression he needed to work out, it was just that physical activity helped... calm him. It gave him a chance to think, even if he wasn't doing so actively, and he was usually able to come out more relaxed than when he'd started, giving him more opportunity to sort out his thoughts properly. As he worked away at the bag, his pokemon went out to train, aiming to bump up some levels while their trainer preoccupied himself.

Zak took a break to release Ten, who's pokeball kept twitching at his side, and to check his text messages. He probably had.... a lot. Given how long he'd been busy with Mr. Francè over there. Which, honestly, hadn't been that long, but for a computer geek like him, going that long without checking his messages usually meant there was a build up. And indeed, there were a few.
