Jasmine couldn't help but smile at Eir's enthusiasm. To think that something she personally found so mundane was that impressive to the other ninetales… Well, Jasmine was just glad she found it so exciting. "There was a strong blizzard one day... I got separated from my pack as a vulpix... Lakshmi found me and nursed me back to health. I owe them my life." She explained. Though she had sort of summarized the story in short bite sized chunks more to her personal style of talking, it was clear that she really admired her trainer and felt quite dedicated to them. Jasmine stared at Eir as the other ninetales explained how she had been to places much warmer than this, such as mountains with lava inside. "That sounds horrible...! I would hate to go to such places." She gasped, chuckling a little at her own surprise. "You must be very brave." To think that this other ninetales had endured such heat, it was truly awe inspiring.
Lakshmi felt a little more at ease after assisting Zoey to make sure Lukas understood the situation fully. "If this doesn't work... Well... Let's not think about that." Lakshmi chuckled nervously. They had planned and prepared for this moment as much as they could. Now all they needed to do was wait for the chimchar to hopefully take the bait. To ease the tension, Lakshmi suggested that Zoey talk about her legendary encounters, starting with Tapu Bulu. It was a fascinating tale, but it also ultimately begged the question of what a 7 year old girl was doing lost in the desert.
The question clearly caused Zoey no small amount of discomfort. Lakshmi didn't need their aura sensing capabilities to see that, and they immediately felt bad for asking. "No, I apologize. I should not have asked. I didn't mean to pry." Lakshmi insisted. However, she did admit that the implications of such a situation were not pleasant ones. Lakshmi's eyes fell downcast, gently tightening the grip they had on their right hand and stroking the black fabric that covered their palm. "Ah... I see..." Lakshmi said quietly. "Family is... A complicated matter, I know this well, though I am not so arrogant as to presume I understand your situation perfectly. However, should you ever change your mind, or find yourself in need of a sympathetic ear, I would be happy to listen." Lakshmi insisted, looking her in the eyes and giving a gentle nod of reassurance. She was not alone, but Lakshmi would not pry any further if she didn't want them to. That was all they wanted to convey.
With that out of the way, Lakshmi was interested in the fact that Zoey found a comparison between themselves and their legendary friend. She insisted they were both peaceful, respectful, and one with nature, though Lakshmi had to chuckle a little at that last one. They didn't think themselves too close with nature anymore, now that they had gone and unleashed a rampaging chimchar, but they appreciated the comparison nonetheless. "Well, I should like to meet them someday, then. Perhaps you can introduce me?" Lakshmi chuckled. The monk had entertained the idea of going on a vacation to Alola some day, and they had only really come to Sinnoh to gather this Chimchar. Perhaps Lakshmi could send a letter to the monastery explaining the situation and get a little leeway to continue their travels? Technically Lakshmi didn't need their permission. The monk was free to come and go as they pleased, but a little forewarning of their absence only seemed fair out of respect for their teachers.
The second legendary Zoey met was apparently a zeraora that had been in Kalos for some odd reason. "That is certainly not where I would expect to find one." Lakshmi agreed with a chuckle, though as Zoey began to talk about different dimensions, Lakshmi nodded with interest and understanding. "Is it that surprising to you? The pokemon universe is vast, and there are many worlds besides our own. If we were the only living creatures here, then that seems like an awful waste of space." Lakshmi chuckled. It might have seemed odd that Lakshmi would remain so calm in the face of such jarring information, but the Jiao Tu prided themselves on knowing all secrets. Their collection of knowledge and all things was immeasurable. That was part of the reason Lakshmi was drawn to study there. Lakshmi knew of the reports of ultra beasts and ultra space, that there were many dimensions besides their own. They didn't plan on overwhelming Zoey with such information, but asking thought provoking questions as she discovered things for herself was harmless, surely? "Anything can be dangerous if you don't know enough about it. I would assume the same goes for these strange pokemon, if they can even be called that. I would be cautious if you did ever meet such a being, if I were you." Lakshmi nodded.

Osma's ears perked up. "Master... At first, Lakshmi feared the Chimchar had come at last, but the monk hadn't sensed its aura yet. Something else? "I'm picking up something... In that island at the center of the lake..." Osma explained. It was so far away that the aura had been too faint to register at first, but since they were concentrating intently on finding and locating the chimchar's aura, Osma seemed to have noticed it now. "It's similar to the plate we just found, but... Different." Lakshmi tilted their head curiously. As interested as they were in the possibility of another plate, it seemed dangerous to have the Lucario leave them right now, even if Lukas was the one who was going to personally be restraining the chimchar, Lakshmi wanted to keep all hands on deck just in case Lukas alone wasn't enough. If they couldn't overpower the chimp one on one, then perhaps they could with sheer numbers.
Before Lakshmi could answer, a beautiful singing voice echoed around them, though its source seemed to come from deep within the lake. Lakshmi couldn't help but stop and listen, entranced by the melody. Then a pokemon emerged from the lake, jumping out of the water, and the melody seemed to impossibly split in two harmonic chords, crystal clear in their sound compared to the distorted, echoing sound from beneath the water. Much like a siren calling the group towards the water and distracting them from their task at hand, intentional or not.
Then, she dove back under the water, and whatever spell over the group suddenly ended as Lakshmi felt a nearby powerful shadowy presence. The chimchar was remarkably close by with his little arms full of berries, looking to grab some of the food while they were distracted. Fortunately, it seemed he had been distracted by the siren's call as well. "Now! Go!" Lakshmi ordered, heart pounding. The pokemon scrambled to get into position, which seemed to startle the chimchar, who must have been expecting to get berries and get out again before they had noticed. Little did it know that they had been planning for this. Upon this realization, the Chimchar turned tail and attempted to flee. Liancha utilized her levitation to swing around and block the chimp, floating between it and the forest. "Sorry dear, but we can't let you run off again." She insisted, eyes glowing a soft pink with a hypnotic energy as she let Lukas sneak up behind it to try and snatch it up.

☆ ☆【Jasmine seemed quite pleased by Eir’s enthusiastic comments about there being other Vulpix and Ninetales like them that lived on Mt. Silver, though given she’d lived a rather sheltered life back on Mt. Lanakila it was always so fascinating for her to learn about new things. She’d never really known just how large the world was beyond the snowy mountains that she called home and even Alola in general, at least until the incident that lead to her ending up far from home and eventually meeting Zoey. She had to wonder, though… if Ice-type Vulpix and Ninetales lived on Mt. Silver, could they possibly exist in other areas of the world where the climate was primarily cold and snowy? Tempting as it was to ask, she was happy to move their little conversation along as she listened to Jasmine recount her story of how she’d met Lakshmi. Well, it was actually more like a short summary of what could’ve been an otherwise extensive story, but given how little the other Ninetales tended to speak it was fitting that she’d keep it brief and to the point.”He sounds and looks like he’s extremely kind, it’s always nice to hear those kinds of stories about trainers helping Pokemon,”Eir chipped in cheerfully. In spite of the shortness of the story, it was clear that Jasmine was very dedicated and grateful to her trainer. Eir could appreciate that kind of bond shared between trainers and their Pokemon, in a way she and Zoey were quite similar as well.
As she then went on to explain a bit more about all the warm places she’d been to, including the big volcano called Mt. Chimney and the volcano park in Alola, she noted the surprised stare that Jasmine was giving her. A soft laugh escaped her as the other Ninetales admonished how awful that must be and that she’d hate to go to such places, even sharing a chuckle herself.”You really think so?”Eir asked, tilting her head slightly at Jasmine’s comment that she must be quite brave to willingly go to such hot places,”Ah, well… I would hardly call myself ‘brave’ or ‘courageous’ or anything like that, really. I mean, I do feel homesick sometimes… It’s been so long since I was last at Mount Lanakila, but at the same time it feels like the longer I spend away from home the more I want to learn about what’s out there even if it does entail some danger.”She gave a small, sheepish smile to Jasmine, casting a brief glance over towards her own trainer as she and Lakshmi conversed.”I just feel like no matter what happens, everything will be alright as long as I have Zoey with me,”she added, nodding towards the other Ninetales as she wagged her tails contentedly,”I guess you could say that much like you and Lakshmi, I owe her my life too. I’d happily go anywhere with Zoey by my side~”
Zoey took a deep breath, feeling slightly more relaxed once Lukas made it clear that he understood the situation at large and the stakes involved. They had done as much planning and preparation as they could with what limited resources they had, they could only hope that it would end up paying off well in the end. The redhead agreed wholeheartedly with Lakshmi on that sentiment, she’d rather not think about what could happen if their plan ended up failing. Still, there was the matter of waiting for their target to show up and hopefully take the bait. It was always the waiting and anticipation that was the worst part, the calm before the storm as Zoey furtively eyed the trees for any signs of sudden movement. Everyone was tense and ready to spring into action as soon as the opportunity showed itself, waiting for the Chimchar to finally show itself once more.
She was more than thankful for the distraction as she regaled Lakshmi with her stories about her encounters with legendary Pokemon, starting off with her old friend Tapu Bulu, the gentle guardian deity of Ula’ula. It wasn’t often she was able to share such stories with others, and she appreciated how Lakshmi listened quietly and intently through the tale with a look of genuine curiosity and awe in his eyes. That being said, however, she honestly had expected him to ask why she’d been out and about in a dangerous place like the Haina Desert at such a young age. Even so, it still didn’t soften the blow any as she visibly grimaced at the question before she could stop herself. She quickly tried to recompose herself, suggesting that it wasn’t something she wanted to really get into right now. It was clear Lakshmi felt guilty for even voicing the question at all, however, as he insisted on apologizing and assuring that he hadn’t meant to pry. ”Nah, it’s alright. To be fair I can’t blame ya for askin’,” she spoke up, a wry smile crossing her face, ”Given the context, it’s a pretty obvious question to want to ask. It’s just… not so easy to really answer…”
Still, she felt like it just wouldn’t do to completely shut him out… She really did want to trust him, to be able to confide more in him about everything in her life that still plagued her to this day. He really did seem genuinely kind and trustworthy, but a part of her warned her to keep a wary eye out regardless. She’d dealt with that kind of monster before, a Houndoom in Mareep’s clothing whose outward appearance belied the cruel beast lying in wait underneath for whatever unfortunate victim it could lure in with its sweet smile and honeyed words. Zoey didn’t want to have to fight against it again, the same kind of monster just with a different face… She wanted to put her full trust in Lakshmi, she genuinely did... But she didn’t want to risk being burned once more from flying too close to the sun, not until she could learn a bit more about him first, really get to know who he was as a person. She was willing to share with him a small hint, though, telling him that the implications of her being lost out in the desert were not very nice at all. A little girl meeting and befriending a legendary out in the desert sounded like it could’ve been ripped straight from a fairy-tale if the context were different, more pleasant and bright, but it had been no such thing to Zoey. It had been a ******** literal, living nightmare...
She watched Lakshmi’s eyes fall, grim and downcast as he tightened a hand into a near fist and rubbed at the cloth on his palm. He spoke in a hushed tone, remarking that family was a very complex matter, one that he knew quite well too. Even so, he wouldn’t presume to know her situation perfectly, but he kindly offered to lend a sympathetic ear to hear her out if she ever changed her mind or just needed someone to talk to when she was feeling troubled. Zoey was… honestly a bit shocked to hear that Lakshmi had gone through something similar, even if it wasn’t an exact parallel of her situation. She never would’ve thought someone like him had dealt with some very complicated family issues, but it was something that could happen to anyone. You never really knew what went on behind closed doors until you saw it for yourself, after all… Her amber eyes met Lakshmi’s mint ones, and a soft smile lit her face as she nodded gratefully back to him. ”I… Thank ya,” she said after a brief hesitation, letting out a breath as she ran a hand through her ponytail, ”It’s… definitely not an easy thing to really talk ‘bout with other people, especially for folks who’ve had it much worse off than others… But it’s always nice knowin’ that someone out there understands how it feels to deal with that sorta thing, even if it ain’t to the same extent. So… thanks for offerin’ to listen, I appreciate it a lot, really.” Even though she doubted she’d really share much of anything about her prior experiences anytime soon, just knowing that someone was offering for her to confide in them felt very relieving. It was clear Lakshmi had meant every word of it, she had to wonder what sort of family issues he’d dealt with in his time... She didn’t voice the question aloud in favor of keeping it on the backburner of her mind for now. Lakshmi was willing to respect her boundaries and refrain from prying into her personal affairs, it was only fair that she do the same for him too.
Letting the conversation shift, Zoey smiled broadly at Lakshmi’s amusement with her proclaimed parallels between him and Tapu Bulu though he seemed to appreciate it nonetheless. She nodded at the suggestion of them perhaps meeting someday as he asked that she could introduce them. ”Heh, I’d be glad to! Hell, if ya ever find yerself in Alola sometime I’d be more than happy to show ya around,” she suggested with a light laugh and a playful wink, ”A nice beach trip could be a refreshin’ change of pace from an isolated mountain monastery, yeah?” Not to knock aforementioned mountain monastery, of course, in fact she was actually quite curious to see it for herself and perhaps learn more about these monks Lakshmi had spent so long training with. ”Although, I’d actually like to check out that place on Mount Silver sometime if I find myself out in Johto, ya don’t suppose the monks accept visitors?” she asked, genuinely curious to know. Of course it was very likely that they might not appreciate some outsider rolling in and traipsing around their pad to ogle at everything, still it couldn’t hurt to know for sure.
Moving on, she shared her next story about meeting Zeraora in Kalos, which she had thought to be very unusual at the time since such Pokemon were actually native to Alola. Even Lakshmi agreed that it was quite an odd place to encounter such a legendary, continuing to listen with interest as Zoey spoke about a strange dimension inhabited by equally weird creatures that might be Pokemon. ”Heh, well I’ll admit it’s not really somethin’ I usually think about,” she commented with a laugh at Lakshmi’s question of it being that surprising to her, ”But yeah, given what we know ‘bout the universe already I guess it would make sense that there’s still plenty out there that has yet to be discovered. It’s pretty crazy to think about though, that we’re just a tiny lil’ speck in a great big ocean o’ so many different worlds n’ dimensions even if we still don’t fully comprehend all these other phenomena happenin’ around us.” She had to wonder how much Lakshmi might know about this alter dimension that apparently could be accessed only in Alola, or about the strange kinds of new creatures that inhabit it. Maybe she’d ask him for a couple lessons later, after this whole Chimchar situation had been well and truly handled. She nodded in agreement as Lakshmi said that anything could be dangerous if they dpn’t know much about it, and that surely the same would go for the odd Pokemon-like creatures that lived in this outer dimension. ”Yeah, I’ve been strongly considerin’ doin’ a lil’ studyin’ up before tryin’ something like that, it’s just that I ain’t too sure where to even start as far as findin’ helpful information,” she admitted, tapping a finger thoughtfully against her chin, ”But yeah, I’ve heard lots of stories ‘bout how dangerous n’ destructive those things can be. Apparently someone saw one of ‘em turn a big dump-truck into a huge pile of scrap metal with a single punch, that for sure ain’t the kinda thing to take lightly.” Of course such stories could’ve just as easily been mere hyperbole, but even so one ought to not go messing around with interdimensional beings they knew so little about all willy-nilly. That was a can of Wurmple that could lead to all kinds of trouble if it was opened carelessly.
Zoey blinked as Osmanthus suddenly cut into their talk, immediately tensing up in preparation for the Chimchar to have finally arrived. However, it seemed that wasn’t the case, apparently the Lucario had picked up on something coming from the island at the lake’s center. He mentioned it being similar to the plate they had found earlier, but different… ”Yeah? It could be worth checkin’ out after we get the whole Chimchar conundrum settled first, of course,” she suggested, ”At the very least we won’t have to deal with more Ghost-types along the way, hopefully…” For now, they needed all the help they could get for when that Shadow Pokemon finally arrived. If by chance Lukas wasn’t able to restrain it alone, then perhaps they might be able to overpower it by sheer numbers. At the very least they had to try as hard as they could to keep it from getting away, if they blew this chance then it was doubtful they’d get another like it. Speaking of which, where was that little monkey at? Surely it had to at least be somewhere close by now, right?
Suddenly, a new sound echoed through the air around them, a siren-like voice singing a beautiful song that immediately caught the attention of all who heard it. It sounded like it was coming from… under the water? Runa’s eyes narrowed as she felt a new aura at the edge of her senses, moving gracefully deep below the lake’s surface before suddenly jetting up towards the surface. The glistening form of a Pokemon emerged from the water, the chords of the song sounding much clearer and brighter as opposed to the distorted melody from deep below the water. ”Is that a… Primarina?” Zoey internally questioned, able to see the mysterious Pokemon for what it was quickly. Primarina in Alola were renowned for being exceptional singers, and were capable of even controlling water with their voice to fight against any foe who dared oppose them. As such, they always went to great lengths to care for and maintain their voices, a Primarina who couldn’t sing was as good as a fish that couldn’t swim. But… why was there one here of all places? And how did it even get here to begin with?
As quickly as the Primarina had appeared, however, she was gone a moment later as she vanished into the lake once more. And just like that everyone snapped back to their senses, Runa’s lips pulled into a snarl as she sensed that very familiar, powerful shadowy aura she’d been searching for and turned in time to see the Chimchar standing just nearby with an armload of berries. Apparently the appearance of the Primarina had distracted it as much as it had the rest of them, but with Lakshmi’s urging everyone quickly jumped into action. The sudden movement as they hastily got into position startled the Chimchar out of its brief daze, and immediately it turned and moved to take off into the forest. Thankfully Liancha was quick to intervene, placing herself between the fleeing monkey and the trees to block its attempted escape. Immediately following up on what the Cresselia was doing, Lukas wasted no time as he quietly padded closer while the Chimchar was caught up in Liancha’s hypnotic display and had its back to him. While the Incineroar snuck up on it from behind, Runa hastily signaled to her Arcanine partner to start moving in closer on the sides to try and block off any other routes it might try to go for if it managed to free itself.
Once he was close enough and the opportunity presented itself, Lukas bared his teeth as he bent his legs and took off into a pouncing leap, easily covering the remaining distance between them. The wrestler cat came barreling down upon the Chimchar, his large clawed hands quickly seizing the little monkey in a firm grip to try to give it as little room to struggle and strike back as he could.”Gotcha,”he growled lowly, catching Runa and the blue Arcanine encroaching to flank from both sides out of his periphery while he remained primarily focused on the monkey in his hands. Lukas tightened his hold as much as he could without causing it any harm and immediately braced himself for whatever attack the Chimchar would surely throw at him when it would start trying to thrash and wriggle its way out, hoping that Liancha would be able to pull through and put it to sleep before they might have to bring in the cavalry to keep it from taking off.】☆ ☆

Jasmine nodded in agreement when Eir suggested that Lakshmi was a kind and caring individual. She had very much enjoyed quiet days spent with the monk as they read books and absently stroked her fur. Though she mildly missed the days when she was small enough to curl up in Lakshmi's lap and dose off as they did so, she was more than happy to trade it for her newfound strength to protect him from harm. That way, they could remain the gentle soul she knew they were.
As Eir recalled warmer climates that she and Zoey traveled to, Jasmine couldn't help but outburst how terrible the heat sounded, and how brave Eir must have been, though it seemed the other ninetales didn't necessarily think much of it. "Being homesick doesn't mean you aren't brave." She pointed out with a curious tilt of her head. "If anything it proves you are brave, for traveling in spite of this." She smiled, wagging her tails a little with pride. It sounded like Eir trusted Zoey as much as Jasmine herself trusted Lakshmi, and she admired their bond. "Good." She commended, eyes narrowing affectionately. It was nice to see another of her kind doing so well in this trainer's care.
Lakshmi was glad to hear that Zoey wasn't angry at them for asking. "Well, just because it may be the obvious question doesn't always mean it is the appropriate one to ask." Lakshmi insisted with a sheepish chuckle. It always fascinated them that even with aura reading abilities, they still had trouble reading a room at times. At least Lakshmi could make up for it in a way by offering their sympathies for what little she did share of her story. It was mildly amusing to see her brief surprise before processing and thanking Lakshmi for being so understanding. "Just because others might have worse situations does not make your personal issues and hardships any less valid. Anyone trying to guilt you into feeling better about yourself is not someone who I would associate with, personally. It's not a healthy mindset to have." Lakshmi insisted with a frown. Still, the monk was more than happy to listen to her if she ever felt the need to talk. "But of course." Lakshmi was grateful that she gave the same courtesy, though they personally didn't mind elaborating a little on the situation if Zoey wanted to know more. However, they also wouldn't push their own past on her unbidden, either.
Content to consider vacation ideas between Alola and Mt. Silver, Lakshmi smiled at Zoey's interest in their monastery and her offer to provide a tour of Alola. "I will certainly keep that in mind, and you are more than welcome to visit the monastery, if you wish. There are certainly ground rules of keeping quiet and peaceful out of respect for the others, but otherwise visitors are more than welcome. Many make a pilgrimage to the peak of the mountain on a journey of self discovery, so the monastery is equipped to house several guests." Lakshmi explained.
As the conversation turned to the zeraora that Zoey met, they contemplated the concept of ultra beasts and other dimensions. It was fair that Zoey hadn't given the matter much thought. One did not often consider the vastness of space and the potential life out there unless that was their livelihood, or you were a monk whose job was to be a living library of knowledge and secrets. "Yes... I'd say that warrants some study. Given that their appearances seem to frequent Alola, it might do you well to prepare, especially if they are as dangerous as you claim. The ability to pulverize entire trucks is certainly ah... Concerning, though not unlike the fantastical things some pokemon are able to achieve." Lakshmi suggested. Mostly, since Zoey was from Alola herself, the monk wanted her to be safe.

Osma apologetically cut into their conversation, but there was urgency in his tone due to picking up on the presence of another plate. Their priority was still with the chimchar of course, but this revelation was also quite important, as Zoey noted. "Agreed." Lakshmi chuckled at her optimism that there would be no ghosts involved this time. Or, at least they hoped so. It seemed that this time, there were no ghosts, but there was however a beautiful water pokemon who seemed to appear out of nowhere, singing an enchanting melody that entranced everyone near the lake, including the chimchar in the act of stealthily taking the berries on the ground. The moment the singing had passed, the group quickly turned their attention on the chimchar and sprang into action, trying to stop it before it could get away.
Liancha was the first to act, blocking the chimchar's path back into the forest beyond while Lukas snuck up from behind, Runa and her arcanine companion flanking from the sides so that they could close in around it. The chimchar screeched and struggled, and overhead a dark cloud bloomed over them, releasing small flurries of dark colored and glowing orbs of energy. "Look out!" Lakshmi called out in warning. "Don't let the orbs touch you!" Osmanthus and Ginseng looked up at the sky with concern, trying to back away from the strange shadowy wisps. Liancha unfortunately couldn't move in order to keep up her hypnosis, but even though the shadows stung terribly, she pushed through until the chimchar slowly faded into unconsciousness, and with it the black clouds above dissipated. "Hff… I think... I think we should be alright for now." She reassured them, and Lakshmi gave a sigh of relief, pulling out the chimchar's pokeball and returning it at last. "Thank you, everyone. I am in your debt." They gave a courteous bow before turning to the lake, where the primarina they had seen earlier was watching them carefully. "And you as well. You were trying to warn us and distract the chimchar earlier, yes?" The primarina seemed to blush a little and look away from the group, now that their eyes were all on her. "O-oh.... Well... Y-yes... Sorry I couldn't help much more than that. I didn't mean to distract you as well...." She said meekly, covering her face a little. Her voice was soft and quiet with Liancha's telepathic translation in contrast to the strong and clear singing voice they had heard before. Then Lakshmi looked to something she was clutching in her fins, a pure blue slate, perhaps the same as the one Osma sensed before. A glance to the Lucario and a nod from him confirmed this.
"You needn't apologize--your singing was quite beautiful, but I do wonder what a pokemon such as yourself is doing in a lake like this?" Lakshmi asked curiously. The primarina sank a little further into the lake, seeming to shy further away from all the attention. "W-well... I don't know... I've been here ever since I can remember. Is... Is that not normal...?" She was lying, but it wasn't malicious. Much like Zoey, it seemed to be a topic that she wanted to avoid. Lakshmi frowned sympathetically. "It's unusual, but not unheard of. There's certainly no need to feel bad about it. What about the plate you hold? May I see it?" She seemed to flinch as Lakshmi pointed out the plate, holding it closer to herself, and the monk held their hands up to show no harm was intended. "My dear, I have no intention of taking it from you. You have my word." After a moment, she spoke again. "....I-it was a gift... F-from the guardian of this lake. She said it would help me be brave..." She explained quietly. "Mesprit gave that to you? Hm... Yes, that seems like her." Liancha chuckled softly, and the primarina seemed surprised to see her. "Oh, L-lady Cresselia…!" Liancha just smiled at the primarina with a mysterious knowing look. "Oh, you are acquainted?" Lakshmi asked. "Something like that, yes. Why don't you come along with us, dear? I think it would do you some good to get you out of this dreary little pond and onto a grander stage. Mesprit would agree." She insisted. "O-oh... No, I couldn't just l-leave..." Her eyes flickered guiltily to Lakshmi, as if silently apologizing for the mere idea of her burdening him with her existence. It broke Lakshmi's heart.
"B-Besides... What if she came back and I wasn't here...?" She asked, looking at Liancha, who for the first time seemed to drop her playful smile and seemed to look at the water type with nothing but pity. "I would be more than happy to have you come with us, but I don't want to pressure you if you are truly uncomfortable with the idea." Lakshmi insisted gently. For a brief moment, the primarina's eyes looked up at him, sparkling with hope, but it immediately faltered as she continued to sink lower and lower into the water. Oh darling.... Who did this to you...? Laskhmi thought with a frown, reaching out carefully to pat her hair. At first she seemed to flinch at the touch, but relaxed slowly when she realized he wasn't hurting her and actually felt kind of nice. "If Liancha thinks Mesprit wouldn't mind you leaving, then I think you don't need to worry about her returning and finding you gone." Lakshmi suggested. "Oh... Um... Right..." Somehow, Lakshmi got the feeling from her discordant response that Mesprit wasn't who she was talking about, and then, slowly, the pieces of the puzzle started to click into place. "I'll tell you what. Why don't you come with us for a little while, and whenever you want to come back here, we can visit whenever you'd like, and if you decide you want to stay after all, I'll release you back here. Does that sound fair?" Lakshmi offered instead. The primarina seemed hesitant at first, but looking up at Lakshmi, she nodded slowly, and Lakshmi gave her a warm encouraging smile. "Wonderful~ Here, we're going to be traveling to the next town, would you like a pokeball to help you travel out of the water?" The primarina seemed unsure. "Do I have to...?" Lakshmi looked mildly surprised. "Of course not. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. I just want to make sure you're comfortable. If you don't mind traveling on land, then by all means." Lakshmi stood and gave her room to slip out of the lake and onto the grass, but after a bit of struggling on the land, she seemed to reconsider. "Ah... Well... Maybe that might be best after all..." Lakshmi held back a light chuckle. "Not a worry my dear. I promise to let you out again in the next body of water we come across. Or, feel free to let yourself out whenever you want." The primarina seemed surprised by the amount of freedom the monk was granting her, but didn't argue. "Do you have a name?" Lakshmi asked her curiously, and she softly shook her head. "Hmm... How about... Hibiscus...? I think it suits such a delicate and beautiful flower such as yourself." Lakshmi beamed with pride in their name choice. "Oh... Um..." Hibiscus said nothing more, staring at the ground sheepishly. She wasn't sure she really agreed, but that didn't mean she didn't like the name. Lakshmi smiled sympathetically. "...I'll let you think about it." They suggested, taking out a pokeball and letting her enter it herself. Then Lakshmi's soft expression darkened to something more somber. "She was abandoned here, wasn't she?" They asked Liancha without context. It wasn't even necessary at this point, Lakshmi just wanted confirmation that their instincts were correct. Liancha nodded quietly, and Lakshmi sighed. "It's probably best that I... Not know the details, for the sake of keeping my composure. However, know that I intend to take very good care of her. You may let Mesprit know that, and thank her for watching over her." Liancha's amused smile returned. "She is aware." She glanced over to an invisible force that distorted the water faintly, causing small, seemingly sourceless ripples in the water before disappearing entirely. Lakshmi stared after where the spirit of emotion had been, unable to help but swear they saw her smile at him before they teleported away. Lakshmi then looked to Zoey, smiling tiredly. "Shall we move on, then...?"

☆ ☆【Jasmine’s sudden outburst when Eir described the much warmer climates she’d been to surprised the ice fox, and it seemed it even surprised Jasmine herself as she laughed and remarked on how brave she must be. However, Eir had to disagree with that, she certainly wasn’t courageous by any stretch of the means. Sure she’d managed to weather through traversing that haunted house back at the Spookival, but she wouldn’t have even wanted to go in at all if Zoey hadn’t been accompanying her. She did feel flattered that the other Ninetales thought of her as such, but still… She listened as Jasmine spoke, pointing out that being homesick didn’t necessarily mean she wasn’t brave and that if anything it proved that she was since she chose to continue traveling in spite of it.”Ah, well when you put it that way…”she said with a soft chuckle, feeling her fur warm a little at the other’s proud expression,”I mean, in all fairness it hadn’t necessarily been by my own choice that I had left Mount Lanakila in the first place… But while I hope to return to my old home someday, if only for a short time, I want to see as much of the world as I can. Have you ever felt the same way too?”
She wondered if maybe Jasmine had shared the same kind of curiosity, perhaps when she was younger. The other Ninetales certainly seemed like the type who would likely be more than content to stay within the boundaries of the realm of perpetual snow and ice she was used to, but Eir had to wonder if maybe she’d wondered what it was like to venture beyond those borders. A warm smile crossed her muzzle as Jasmine seemed pleased to hear that she too shared quite a close bond with her trainer, it made her quite happy to hear and see another one of her own kind flourishing and sharing such a deep bond with a trainer. She wondered if she might meet more of her kind out there during their travels, and if they were as happy to stay by their trainer’s side as Jasmine was.
Lakshmi seemed relieved when Zoey assured him, she could hardly blame him for asking the question given the context of the situation she’d described. Still, he insisted that even if it had been the obvious question, that didn’t mean it was the most appropriate to ask. She supposed he had a point, though she couldn’t really fault him either way, especially since she’d more or less expected the inquiry to have popped up at some point. Still, she listened as he offered his sympathies, assuring her that if she ever needed to talk to someone he would gladly lend her his ear. The offer was… admittedly a touch surprising, though she supposed she should’ve expected it. Lakshmi clearly came off as a very understanding kind of person, someone she felt she could talk to without fearing judgment or accusations for all the wrongdoings and shitty decisions she’d made in the past. He insisted that just because others might have had it worse off didn’t make her own personal hardships any less valid, and that anyone who tried to guilt her into feeling better about herself wouldn’t be the kind of person he’d want to associate with as it wasn’t a very good kind of mindset to have. ”Agreed, for sure,” she said with a nod, her voice lowering to a mutter as she rubbed at her arm, ”Arceus knows I’ve had enough of people tryin’ to guilt trip me just in general…”
She really did appreciate his offer to listen to her whenever she really needed to talk, perhaps more than he might know. It oddly felt a bit liberating, knowing that she had someone she could potentially confide in, even though she likely wouldn’t feel comfortable enough to talk about her experiences in extensive detail anytime soon. Even so, she had to admit Lakshmi carried a kind of vibe around him that made her feel more relaxed, and even though he was likely not even that old he seemed to hold a wisdom that echoed far beyond his years. He seemed very similar to her own Amá, in a way… maybe that was why she felt a bit more comfortable around him than how she usually felt with most people she didn’t know all that well.
As they moved on to talk about the possibility of visiting different regions, Lakshmi seemed interested in her offer to show him around Alola if he ever found himself around there sometime. Similarly, she couldn’t help but feel curious about that monastery where those monks he’d mentioned earlier lived up on Mt. Silver, perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to stop in for a visit sometime. She nodded as he said he’d keep her suggestion in mind, and assured that she was welcome to come in to the monastery though there were certain rules such as staying quiet and peaceful out of respect for the monks who lived there. She listened with intrigue as he mentioned that many journeyed to the mountain’s peak for self-discovery, and as such the monastery had plenty of rooms to house guests. ”Self-discovery, huh?” she murmured, narrowing her eyes in thought, ”Y’know, that’s kinda why I even started this Pokemon journey in the first place.” The more she thought on it, the more appealing the idea of visiting the monastery became. Perhaps she should look into booking a trip there sometime soon…
Beyond that, the topic soon shifted towards her meeting with Zeraora, and Lakshmi did pose a very interesting question regarding the idea of there being other dimensions and other beings that could also be Pokemon. Zoey had to admit it wasn’t something she really thought about, but ever since she’d heard about being able to summon an interdimensional being using those shards she was getting from the Totems it had really fascinated her. It was just such a shame that any information that could be helpful was not as easily accessible, and understandably for good reason because that wasn’t the kind of stuff you really wanted being out there for anyone to see. She’d considered possibly visiting the Aether Foundation at some point when she returned to Alola, if anyone around the region was likely to have any information on these wormholes and weird beasts it would likely be them. Lakshmi voiced his agreement, and because they had a tendency to appear primarily in Alola she would do well to prepare herself just in case especially if they were as dangerous as she’d claimed them to be. Although, the powers and strength these beasts possessed was quite similar to some of the capabilities Pokemon had. He did have a point, admittedly, that one beast’s ability to destroy a huge truck in one punch wasn’t unlike a Mudsdale being able to do the same with its heavy, mud-coated hooves. ”That’s definitely true… But yeah, I’d definitely like to try to do some research before messin’ around with that sorta stuff, I’d rather be prepared than just jump into it blindly n’ really ******** things up in the process,” she nodded, giving a thoughtful glance towards the monk, ”Does the monastery have any information that could be helpful? Maybe I could try lookin’ for some if I end up takin’ a detour out there… otherwise I might have to try visitin’ the Aether Foundation. If anyone in Alola would have at least some information on that sorta thing it’d likely be those folks.” Of course, Zoey couldn’t say she was particularly thrilled at that idea… Aether always seemed like they had truly good intentions, especially since they worked so hard to care for and protect Pokemon. But she couldn’t help but get a nagging feeling that there might be some shady s**t going on behind the scenes… She wondered if Lakshmi had heard of Aether, if he’d done research into their work and what he thought of them as an organization.
Zoey gave the lavender-haired man a curious look for a brief moment until Osmanthus cut into their talk, voice urgent as he pointed out the presence of yet another one of those plates. Runa glanced over, nodding to the woman to confirm that the other Lucario’s claim was indeed not unfounded. Tempting as it was to seek out the location of this new plate, they couldn’t divert their attention from their plan to capture that Shadow Chimchar just yet and they couldn’t afford to send someone out to investigate since they’d need all the help they could get for this. Zoey, of course, didn’t discount the discovery as not being important, however, suggesting that they could look into it once the situation with the Chimchar had been dealt with first. Lakshmi agreed, quite amused at Zoey’s comment about them not having to deal with fighting and running away from more ghost Pokemon this time around. However, what happened next had nothing to do with ghosts as a Primarina unexpectedly made an appearance, appearing from the lake as she sung a beautiful song that seemed to capture everyone around the lake in a trance. It wasn’t until the mermaid-like Pokemon disappeared back into the lake and the music had ceased that they quickly caught sight of the Chimchar, who had been in the process of trying to snatch up a small stash of berries and slip away unnoticed but had also been distracted by the siren’s song.
Almost immediately upon realizing what was going on it tried to make a beeline for the trees, only to be blocked by Liancha as she used her hypnotic power to hold it in place long enough for Lukas to come up and grab it from behind. Meanwhile, Runa and her Arcanine partner moved in from the sides to cut off any other potential escape routes. As soon as it was snatched up, the Chimchar screeched angrily and fought back against the Incineroar holding it captive, summoning a large dark cloud overhead that started raining down what looked like glowing orbs of shadowy energy. Zoey and her Pokemon immediately moved back and out of the storm’s radius at Lakshmi’s warning call, save for Lukas who gritted his teeth as the strange shadowy rain pummeled him. It hurt quite a bit, but he remained stalwart and determined as his grip on the Chimchar refused to let up. Runa and her Arcanine companion were feeling the sting as well as they stayed where they were, ready to come in and help if the monkey managed to wriggle itself free. Still, those caught in the storm weathered through it long enough for Liancha to successfully put the Chimchar to sleep, and with that the rain stopped as well.】☆ ☆

☆ ☆【”We… We did it…”Runa breathed, feeling considerably relieved once Lakshmi returned the unconscious Fire-type to its ball. Turning to Liancha, the Lucario dipped her head in gratitude to the legendary.”I humbly thank you for coming to our aid when you did, lady Liancha. Please allow me to tend to what wounds you sustained during the struggle, if you would,”she said, waving a paw as she conjured up some healing water for both herself and the others who had gotten caught in the shadow storm. Lukas grinned and nodded appreciatively as Lakshmi everyone for their help, Runa and her Arcanine friend doing the same as well. Zoey followed the monk’s gaze as he then turned to face the lake to thank their apparent unexpected ally, a bit surprised to see the Primarina from earlier watching them. She seemed surprised at the gratitude, apologizing for not being able to help much more than she’d been able to and that it hadn’t been her intention to distract them too in the process. Zoey listened as Sigurd provided a translation via his telepathy, a soft smile crossing her face as she nodded to the mermaid. ”Hey, no worries. Ye were just helpin’ us out the only way ya could, can’t fault ya for what happened, especially since it worked out well in the end,” she reassured, noting how shy and soft-spoken the Primarina was compared to her singing from earlier.
”The plate we sensed earlier… It’s in her possession,”Runa spoke quietly, directing Zoey’s attention to the blue slate clutched in the mermaid Pokemon’s fins. Lakshmi spoke up, assuring the Primarina that she didn’t need to apologize and complementing her singing, though he did bring up a good question: what was a Pokemon like her doing in a place like this in the first place? With all eyes on her now, the Water-type only grew more nervous with the attention, saying that she didn’t know and that she’d been here for as long as she could remember before asking if it wasn’t normal. Runa’s ears flicked at that, holding a paw up to her muzzle as she scrutinized the Primarina. That was obviously a lie, but not out of malice… Whatever it was that had happened to her, she clearly didn’t want to talk about it. The dark-furred Lucario’s bright blue eyes glistened with sympathy as Lakshmi went on, saying that while such an occurrence was strange it wasn’t unheard of and it wasn’t anything to feel bad about. When asked if he could see the plate she was holding, the Primarina flinched and immediately held it closer like a child with her favorite plush toy in spite of Lakshmi’s assurance that he didn’t intend to take it. The fear in the Water-type’s eyes struck at Zoey’s heart, it was clear that plate was an object of importance and comfort to her and not something she’d willingly give away. She listened as the Primarina explained that the lake’s guardian had given it to her as a gift, and that she’d said it would help her to have courage.
Zoey was admittedly as surprised at Liancha’s familiarity with the guardian of the lake, Mesprit as she’d called her, as Lakshmi was, then again considering that both were likely legendary Pokemon it probably should’ve been expected that they at least knew of each other. The Cresselia offered the Primarina to come along with them, saying that it would be good for her to branch out and find a bigger stage for her beautiful performances and that surely Mesprit would say the same. However, she seemed reluctant to leave, and the look she gave to Lakshmi shattered Zoey’s heart into pieces. ”Poor dear…” she said quietly, looking to Lakshmi as he reassured the Primarina. A spark of hope caught her eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it came as she hesitated and kept sinking down into the lake. Zoey watched as the monk reached out and pet the Primarina, who flinched at his touch but slowly eased up. It was clear that this poor beautiful Pokemon had been abandoned here… and based on her reaction to being touched Zoey had to wonder if perhaps there’d been abuse involved as well. The woman understood that feeling of abandonment all too well… and no Pokemon deserved to be treated that way anymore than another human being did… As Lakshmi spoke with the Primarina Zoey’s gaze darkened as she looked away, taking a deep breath as she clenched and unclenched a fist. Whoever had done this to such a beautiful, sweet Pokemon deserved to have their lights punched out if she ever got ahold of them… Sigurd looked up to Zoey, brow furrowed in concern as he released a light, calming lavender-scented aroma to help put her at ease.”It is alright, Zoey,”his warm voice, soothing and level, echoed in her head,”Believe me, I am just as troubled by such an injustice as you are, but there is nothing we can do about what has already happened. The least we can do now is offer this poor soul whatever aid we can give, and it seems Lakshmi has that more than taken care of.”
Zoey took another breath, inhaling the soothing scent and feeling her tense muscles relax, giving a small smile as she pat the Ryuushu’s head in thanks and looked back to Lakshmi as he offered the Primarina a Pokeball to help her travel outside of the water. The uncertainty was clear on her face and in her words as she asked if she had to, Lakshmi seeming quite surprised as he assured her that she didn’t have to do anything she didn’t want to and he only wished to ensure she was comfortable. Stepping back a little to give her as much room as she needed, Zoey watched the Primarina pull herself up onto the grass, trying to find a way to effectively move herself around on land but without much success as she voiced her reconsideration. Lakshmi promised to let the Primarina out of her ball when they came across another body of water, though she was free to let herself out whenever she wished. When asked if she had a name, however, she simply shook her head, and the lavender-haired man suggested ‘Hibiscus’. It was a very nice name, Zoey had to agree with him on that, however the Primarina didn’t seem as sure about it as she made to say something but stopped herself and averted her gaze. She hadn’t disagreed, necessarily, but maybe she needed more time to think on it, which Lakshmi was willing to give as he allowed her to enter her new Pokeball.
With the Primarina taken care of now, Zoey frowned as Lakshmi asked the Cresselia about her being abandoned here, the formerly gentle expression on his face now pinched into a bleak frown. ”It seems like it, unfortunately…” she spoke up as Liancha nodded, worrying at her bottom lip as she shook her head, ”The poor dear… She deserves so much better than that….” The redhead nodded in solemn agreement at Lakshmi’s comment about not knowing the details for the sake of keeping his composure intact. The extent of cruelty that humans were capable of inflicting not only on others of their own kind but on Pokemon as well truly knew no bounds… Zoey had witnessed it firsthand herself, and it wasn’t anything she would want to wish upon even her most hated enemy. That someone would willingly treat a Pokemon so poorly disgusted her, and she was more than glad to hear Lakshmi’s vow to take good care of the poor lost Primarina. ”Ya better,” she said with a soft smile, looking to Liancha as the monk told her to let Mesprit know and to thank her for watching over her. However, it seemed the lake’s guardian was more than already aware, Zoey quickly following the Cresselia’s gaze in time to see some kind of invisible being hovering above the lake, forming small ripples with seemingly no origin to form where it lightly disturbed the water’s surface. A blink, and it was gone as quickly as it’d appeared. ”Mesprit…” the thought echoed in Zoey’s mind faintly as she stared a moment longer at the spot it had appeared. Turning her attention back to Lakshmi, she mirrored his smile and nodded in agreement. ”Sure, onwards to Sandgem it is then, yeah?” she suggested, gesturing for her Pokemon to follow along as they started to head away from the lake.
As they departed, Zoey was a bit surprised to see Runa and her Arcanine companion fall in line beside her, with the threat of the Shadow Chimchar now gone for the time being they didn’t really have much other reason to stick around. Then again, she had told them that whether or not they wanted to stay was entirely up to them, perhaps she ought to be glad that it seemed they’d chosen to accompany her. Runa, seeming to read her mind as was becoming a trend, looked to the woman and gave a gentle smile. ”So…” Zoey began, her eyes locked curiously on the Lucario as she gave an opening for an answer.”I suppose it’s no surprise to you now, but I’ve been giving the idea of taking you as a new trainer quite a bit of thought during everything we went through… Your words and your actions truly do speak volumes about you, Zoey,”she spoke, dipping her head respectfully,”Therefore, I would be glad to honor you as my new trainer, if you would have me. And I’m sure it goes without question that my partner would be happy to call you our friend as well.”A bark and a nod of affirmation from the big blue dog was all the answer Zoey needed. ”Heh, well thanks, to both of ya for all ya’ve done for us. To be fair I’d hardly call myself a saint by any means, but I’ve been taught to live by treatin’ others how I myself want to be treated, and by givin’ kindness ye’ll get kindness in return,” she said, voice soft as she pulled a couple of Pokeballs off her belt, ”I’m glad that I was chosen, though, it’d be my honor n’ pleasure to welcome both of ya on the team~”
Exchanging smiles between each other, Runa and her Arcanine companion reached out in unison and tapped the buttons of each of their new Pokeballs, capturing themselves and securing their places among their new allies. Zoey nodded in approval, placing the balls back in their spots before looking between the pair. ”Now then, suppose ye’ll need names, if ya want ‘em that is,” she smiled to Runa, already knowing the Lucario had a name for herself, but the big dog had yet to receive one, ”How does Amalie sound to ya, then? Ya worked hard to help us out however ya could even though ya had no trainer n’ didn’t know us too well, a name to reflect that spirit would fit quite well, eh?” The Arcanine’s ears perked up at the new name, happily bouncing on the balls of her paws as she gave a bark and a wag of her big, fluffy tail. Her reaction, coupled with the Lucario’s smile, was all Zoey needed to know the nickname was accepted. ”Well then, we’re glad to have ya with us, Amalie n’ Runa,” she reciprocated with a grin, more than glad for the new additions to her steadily expanding team. She’d definitely work hard to make sure these two got the love, care, and respect they deserved, she’d make sure they wouldn’t regret their decision to join her, that was for damn certain.
Bright smile on her face, Zoey turned her attention back to Lakshmi, nodding to him. ”So… How ‘bout we grab ourselves a lil’ somethin’ to eat when we get to Sandgem? Think we deserve to treat ourselves a bit after all that,” she suggested, humming thoughtfully, ”After we get those ghosts ya caught taken care of at the Pokemon Center, of course. What exactly are ya gonna do with all of ‘em, if ya don’t mind me askin’?” While they’d been running from the ghosts earlier, it seemed like Lakshmi had been capturing as many of them as he had to keep them safe until they could get taken care of properly. It sounded like he didn’t exactly intend to really keep them all, though, which made Zoey curious as to what he planned to do with them after they were treated at the Pokecenter. He could probably release them back into the wild or even give them away to new trainers who could take care of them, though she wanted to hear his thoughts first before drawing any conclusions.】☆ ☆

"No-ne to guide us, I feel fear for the very last time~" Eudora sang along with the chorus, the synthetic flute's high pitch loud in her ears and deafening her to the outside world. She didn't mind it, the volume on her headphones—the wireless kind, but NOT that brand—wasn't blasting but juuuust high enough to drown out smaller sounds: like the swish swish swish of their feet through the short, stubby grass. Henry was a step ahead of her, his composure forgotten as he ran about with wide eyes and his flippers stretched back. His familiarity stopped at Twinleaf Town and the new sights were worth gawking over, especially as they drew closer to the lake.
It was a nice detour before they hit Sandgem, and the idea of cooling her feet by the water was too enticing. It wasn't boiling hot, but already Eudora could feel her forehead growing damp, and unlike Undella, there wasn't the ocean breeze to cool her; why couldn't she have started somewhere cold?! So, the sun-shimmering water was a welcome sight for both pokemon and trainer, though Henry ran at it faster than Eudora. He fell over, twice, but neither was as bad as his fall back in Twinleaf and he popped up, unphased and revitalized, both times. His journey ended at the water with a trill and a splash.

Eudora slipped her right earbud into her pocket as she approached the water's edge, her dark eyes scanning the water first for Henry and then, once she found him, the island further out. "I wonder what kind of secret lab they have out there," she muttered to herself. Because this was too inconspicuous a spot for an evil organization not to use. The young woman sighed pleasantly as a cool breeze raced across the lake to tickle her cheeks and sat down. Her shoes stayed on, for now. Another breeze, just as pleasant as the first, rolled by and Eudora closed her eyes to enjoy it. If being a pokemon trainer meant finding new nature spots then she was in the right field (heh, pun intended). Of course, she knew there was much, much more to it and she hadn't even scratched the surface yet. But, with the now-tolerable sun on her face and WILLOW in her ear it was easy to convince herself that she had this.
SPLASH!
Drops of water splashed onto her face and forearm before Eudora opened her eyes and watched Henry shake himself dry. "Havin' fun?" she asked with a wry smile. He puffed his fluffier-than-usual chest in response, but his bright eyes gave him away. "I'm glad. I think it's impor— BEHIND YOU!"
In a flash, Henry whipped around with a flipper at the ready and smashed it into the soft face of the craven who'd snuck up from behind. A painful yowl ripped through the air as the furry creature was sent flying back into the dirt and Henry, unflinching, approached his fallen foe with a sniff of disdain. Pathetic.
From Eudora's point of view, she'd panicked a bit, sure, but she hadn't expected the furry little beaver to amble in so close! So, when she'd shouted (a bit too loud) Henry had flailed in wild panic and smacked the unsuspecting creature in the face as he whirled around. Eudora winced at the meaty smack of the impact and jumped to her feet, but by the time she reached the overturned little fella, Henry was already standing over it in shock and sniffing absently. She didn't blame him, it had all happened so fast.
"Wait." Henry, drawn from his stupor by her voice, looked at her.

Eudora sniffed the air, momentarily distracted from the unconscious beaver on the ground. The air had changed: there was now a hint of... sweetness intermingled with it. Definitely manmade, it reminded her of syrup? But the extra sweet kind, like a candy apple. Despite her suspicions, Eudora inhaled deeply. When a full 30 seconds of nothing passed, she reached back into her bag to pull out her brand new Pokedex and took a moment to run her fingers appreciatively over the sleek red plastic. Booting it up was easy (because Lauren had shown her how) and with her tongue peeking out the edges of her mouth, Eudora pointed it at Henry. Words popped up on the screen immediately but she ignored them in favor of pressing down onto one of the silicone buttons and changing the screen. "Hmm, alright," she said after a while. "Growl, and Pound?"
Eudora lifted her eyes from the pokedex, settled them on Henry, and then resettled them on a small, black and white bird that fluttered onto the ground. "Starly!" the pokedex piped in helpfully when she turned her body in the pokemon's direction. "Oh, uh, thanks. Henry, use... Pound on that Starly!" Eudora commanded and turned her head to the empty spot of grass. She blinked, turned around, and saw that Piplup was already engaging the little bird; he'd probably seen it before her.
"Oh." She watched, a tad unsure, as Piplup gave Starly one good whack to the head. "Yeah!" she crowed. "Just like that!"

Eudora pulled her other earbud out, she needed her full attention for this one. Henry was doing well so far and clearly– she winced when his mighty flipper came down on another beaver—"Bidoof!" the pokedex said this time—and she wondered if his appendage was starting to grow sore? Clearly, he knew how to fight and it was a little embarrassing to call out commands that were already being performed. At that point, you weren't issuing commands, you were giving a play-by-play. How had he gotten this good at fighting? Eudora fiddled with the question as she watched Henry waddle back to the water, proud of his accomplishments. Was it instinct or maybe Lauren and the assistants performed mock battles with all the starters? Preparing them for their future.

Cautiously, Eudora sank into a "ready" sitting position: left leg out and right leg propped up, she was ready to spring into action if the need arrived. But, she was starting to suspect that it wouldn't. It was obvious that Lake Verity's inhabitants were no match for Henry. And, while he relished in the fact that he was the strongest, Eudora could tell that he was quickly growing bored of the lack of competition. And she didn't blame him: walking up to a pokemon and slapping it across the face lost its luster around the third smack. And no amount of regal posing could spice it up, though she applauded Henry's efforts.

Henry yawned, utterly bored before he shot a longing stare at the lake. Swimming had been fun! Unlike this. He moved his body towards rustling grass and watched, stone-faced, as one of the pokemon he'd felled stood up and retreated back, after a good shake. Even when they went down, they got up soon after. "Lup." It was decided then! Without another word, Henry ran off, back to the water with a desperate dive that threw water back and onto the grass. Thankfully, it wasn't anywhere near Eudora.
She watched him, a mix of blues in nothing but blue, until he went too deep or too far and she pulled her earbuds back out, both of them. Indistinct music could still be heard pouring out from them—she'd forgotten to actually pause anything—and when Eudora popped them in she found that she was already on the second verse of a song she particularly liked. "Damn," she muttered to herself before pulling her phone out and hitting the back button. A man's voice, high and sweet, was cut off midway through a plea to be drowned before vocals took his place.

Back to her sunbathing, Eudora hummed and sang under her breath while Henry continued his underwater adventures, breaking the surface every so often to spit water onto pokemon that got too close to the edge. It didn't seem too forceful of an attack to the newbie trainer, but each pokemon that got a face full of water fainted soon after in a heap of wet fur or feathers; you know what they say about assuming. She left him to it and resumed her nature observation, though time and time again her dark eyes flitted to the island in the middle of the lake. The candy-sweet smell was still in the air (and now she really wanted a candy apple) without any explanation, and it was doing more than just fueling her desire for more cavities. The pokemon were attracted to the smell too, she could tell by the way most of the Bidoof arrived with their noses upturned. This was suspicious and any suspicious nature was tied to the one area that screamed "suspicious".
"I'm onto you," Eudora muttered to the island, hoping that the wind would carry her words to it and the evil organization that was, so obviously, lurking in the shadows.

Eudora was still staring at the island, and, from time to time Henry whenever he made a reappearance when she came to a stark realization. "I should be trying to catch some of you guys," she said to a waterlogged Bidoof a few feet away. It didn't hear her, being unconscious and what have you, but the longer she stared at its swirling spiral eyes the less certain she was. "Okay, maybe not you guys– no offense." The pokemon she captured were, ideally, the pokemon she'd keep with her for the rest of her journey, however long or short it was. So, it only made sense that she captured pokemon she actually wanted. And it wasn't even the species that bothered her—okay, she was justifying herself... to herself—but their level: if they were weaker than Henry, her starter, then that just meant she'd have even more work cut out for her in training them.
And, why fight (or train) harder when you could fight (or have your pokemon fight for you) smarter?
