=> I see some trolls have lusus art in their profiles!
Trolls who participate in shop meta and mini-meta activities can win free lusus art with the prizes given out. See more here.

Your trolls guardian, or lusus, will be the creature that raises your troll from birth, replacing the human concept of a family/parent. It is possibly one of the most important factors in your trolls young life, in terms of how they came to be the way they are.

A lusus can be any kind of creature you can imagine, from a rat to a twelve-headed foxchicken. All lusus are completely white, with no pigment in their skin, fur, feathers, or scales. The only colour on a lusus is it's blood, which matches that of it's troll, and is how it chooses its charge in the first place. For more information about how lusus choose their trolls, and the birth of trolls, please read here.

Most trolls tend to pick up a habit or two from their lusus, and it's not uncommon for a troll to grow to resemble their guardian in some ways. For example, a troll with a bear-like lusus might hibernate, and a troll with a cat-like lusus might be very fastidious or picky.

All lusi, whatever they look like, should be able to move around on their own, be somewhat adept in combat, and be able to help their troll survive in some way. After all, these creatures climbed out of the brooding caverns with their ward trolls and helped defend them against the creatures of Alternia when they were very young! While some might be strong creatures that fight, others might be very intelligent, and have taught their trolls how to think their way out of dangerous situations, or crafty and taught their troll the art of stealth.

As well as teaching their charge to survive, all lusus have several other duties and responsibilities that come instinctively. Firstly, they all teach their trolls the basics of troll society including the hemospectrum, the existance of the queen, and the basics of everyday life. They teach their charge to sleep in their recuperacoons and nourish themselves, and while a troll is a child, they will guard their charge with their life. While a troll is a child, their lusus will try and constantly stay by their side when they leave their hive, and will prevent them from entering into battle.

"Lusus naturae ("freaks of nature"), also known as custodians, are the HIVEBENT equivalent to a GUARDIAN. They look after the young TROLLS while the adults besiege other star systems in the name of ALTERNIAN glory. Trolls and their custodians have a peculiar arrangement of codependency. The lusus behaves as a lifelong bodyguard, caretaker, and visceral sort of mentor, while the young troll must learn to function as a sort of zookeeper."
