"Wait, what?!" Were there no targets for practice? No explanation on the rules, or how everything worked? Everyone else seemed to know what they were supposed to do right off the bat, so maybe Fay was supposed to read some "How-to" guide on quidditch tryouts? Did he miss a memo somewhere? "Am I supposed to hit my fellow housemates right off the bat?" Fay was a small, four foot something brat. There was no way he packed enough of a punch to direct an iron ball crashing towards another magical human flying at insanely high speeds. The first year tumbled his way onto his broom, and tumbled into the sky, barely hanging on as his mind was filled with anxiety and questions similar to, "What in the world am I doing?!"
It didn't help that within a few seconds of taking off, Fay saw a bludger flew straight towards him, and in his panic, the kid flailed his bat around, hoping that it'll be directed somewhere else. (unofficially aimed at Diantha)

Di didn't even see the bludger that slammed into her back, but she definitely felt it. She was knocked forward on her broom and inadvertently whimpered in pain, then mentally berated herself for it. Everyone was going to think she was some weak little girl. Still, she'd never even broken a bone before, and an iron ball slamming into your back hurt. There was going to be a massive bruise, she suspected, blinking back tears of pain. Stupid, stupid, stupid. She wasn't going to start crying. She'd been hit with a bludger and now lost the quaffle- Grace had snatched it away. Setting her jaw, she shot after the older girl in an attempt to regain it.

Rhys narrowed his eyes, then shot off, his boredom forgotten. Well, if he had thought that being bored would help him find the snitch, he'd attempt to be bored every game. However, that never really worked out, and Rhys merely concentrated on trying to catch up to the snitch.

Fay hit someone! Oh my lord, he hit someone. "I AM SO SORRY, I DIDN'T MEAN TO!" What was he saying? This was the perfect time to nod, puff out his chest, and take full credit to what dumb luck bestowed upon him. It was probably pure luck that he hit someone on the opposing team. Imagine the exasperated sighing Fay would have to sit through if he truly aimed at someone on his own team. Getting hit by the bludger seemed like it'd hurt a lot though. The first year cringed.
But he now kind of understood the gist of what being a "beater" meant to be. In short, you play baseball with a really heavy ball that is actually pretty easy to divert. You keep a cleaning tool tucked between your legs, and float probably half a kilometer in the sky. Easy enough! It's almost just as bad as watching Americans run into each other head first with a pear-shaped ball.
Like a newborn puppy trying to take a dump for his first time, Fay awkward reeled his arm back, and attempted at hitting the bludger again, aiming at Dylan.
