death.
For visitors, death doesn't need to be permanent. In fact it can be a stepping stone to greater things and more power from the otherworld. It can be a trigger for a unique specialization, such as Aleksy's vampirism, or a simple change in life state that changes little aside from your character's awareness of their own mortality. It's really up to you, as the player, to decide exactly what a death stage means.

The ability to obtain a death stage is something inborn to your character, like the color of their hair or how they taste cilantro. No external trigger is required; when something outside of your character forces their rebirth after death, it's an undeath bond, not a death stage, and has completely different effects. A death stage is something like your character shedding their skin, or emerging from a cocoon. This isn't something a character will always be aware of before dying, though they can be. However, having the capability to become undead doesn't mean you always will; it can be prevented by an undeath bond or simply by someone interfering with your magic.

death for the undifferentiated.
As in all things, the undifferentiated hold the greatest potential for large-scale changes after coming back from death. For them, death can be the key that unlocks a unique specialization; by leaving their mortal trappings behind, they have become something more than what they were. An undead undifferentiated can never differentiate unless their death triggered a unique specialization. This must be submitted via PM to the mule, as all plots must be. To create your unique specialization, refer to the info thread on unique specializations.

A visitor may also simply become undead, and would therefore gain boons and debuffs as the differentiated do. See the differentiated post below to see what you'd get.

death for the differentiated.
Dying while differentiated functions differently than dying while undifferentiated. Rather than being able to trigger a whole new specialization, your character maintains the specifics of their class with one major, concrete mechanical change that functions as both boon and debuff.

    FOR INSTANCE:
  • Your character is a noble. They die, and come back as a ghost. Your noble is now a GHOST NOBLE, and their major mechanical change is that they are now semicorporeal. They cannot be touched, but they can touch things. They are immune to touch-based powers of all kinds and cannot be effected by elemental magic. However, they cannot be touched. Healing powers that rely on physical contact won't work on them, for instance, not to mention they're not going to be petting a cat anytime soon.
  • Your character is a moonwalker. They die, and come back as a zombie*. Their magic continues to animate them as their human body rots. Physical magic, such as smashing s**t, does nothing to them. Elemental magic causes extra harm. Healing magic causes pain, and actively interferes with their ability to keep themselves in one piece. They no longer need to eat. As a moonwalker, their animal form is also beginning to decay. They smell awful.
  • Your character is a warg. They die, and come back as a vampire. They feed off the energy of their familiar in order to remain alive. Their efficacy as a warg-as-looking-through-a-familiar is thusly lessened, but their ability to scry in silver-backed surfaces is unparalleled. They cannot die, but are now obligated to be nocturnal, as is their familiar.

*THIS SHOP WILL NEVER ALLOW CANNIBALISM OR CANNIBALISTIC THEMES I JUST CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER WORD FOR WHAT I MEAN

requirements.
To actually trigger the death stage, your character only has to die. So that's like one thread. However, to get your death stage approved, you must send a PM to the mule outlining your specialization or your mechanical change and getting it approved. Once your death stage is approved, you should post the RP where the death happens into shibrogane's modbook for approval.
